University of Illinois-CVM - Application C/O 2022

Okay that’s absolutely ridiculous that you aren’t allowed to get the vaccines at the school because they changed the policy AND TOLD NOBODY because I’m positive you aren’t the only one who was planning on getting them at the school.

When do you move down there? Are you able to start the series ON August 1st? You should be done by the deadline if you were able to (day 0,7,21 or 28 and if you do 21 days then you’d be done the 22nd I believe)
Hey Ski, yeah it sucks. I won’t move down until the 21st of August but I had planned on driving down (I live in Southern IL) on Aug 1st to start the series and be done on the 22nd like you said, but Kari told me it could take two-three weeks to get copy to ASA since McKinley will likely be swamped to start the term. I told her nothing I can do. She said that 90% of students have no trouble getting rabies results to ASA before classes, so I assume most get the shots elsewhere and not at McKinley? What really gets me is that the information on the Admitted Student Page, which btw ASA told me to reference for getting things ready for matriculation, is not correct. Not sure right now

Or alternatively, could you get yourself bit by a raccoon or bat and get the post exposure vaccines because most insurances will cover that series 🤣
Lol I’m a trooper and all, but I’m not game for that

That's very new. Normally it's by October because that's when first year rotations start and I wouldn't expect them to change back to having first years in rotations during first quarter.

I mean, whenever you get a vaccine in general I would think you should be able to get some sort of record of what you got. Hopefully it’ll work out for you with getting them and you’ll be able to start them August 1st!!!

Also, @pcram93 possibly may be good to post about the vaccine thing they told you on the class fb page because I’m sure some people might not have realized the email was saying the October deadline was no longer a thing.

So I got the email today stating that rabies vaccination paperwork has to be sent to ASA before classes begin. The problem is that my insurance doesn’t cover the shots and the cheapest I’ve found from calling around back in March was at McKinley, but they don’t start administering the shots until August 1st. I called ASA and spoke with Kari who told me that the information on the Admitted Student Page about having rabies shot paperwork in by October was outdated and not applicable anymore. Pretty much, she said that rotation scheduling varies for students, so shot records have to be with them before classes begin. Since I am financially independent and from a low income family, my plan was to have the shots billed to my student account by McKinley, but again this was with the understanding that the information on the admitted student page was accurate concerning the October 22, 2018 deadline of having the rabies series completed. I’m stuck here and worried if I’m scheduled for rotations to start the quarter, I won’t be able to participate. Does anyone have experience or know someone who had a similar situation, and some advice that can be offered?
Thanks guys
I mean, if they just emailed you guys, that's their own fault. It's already the last week of July and it takes 3-4 weeks to finish the entire series. Given that it can be a bit difficult to get the vaccines in certain places, not everyone who has yet to start the series at this point will get it finished before classes start. I guarantee you that some of your future classmates were planning on getting their series at McKinley as well.

First years aren't on rotations the first quarter (hence the October rabies deadline). I really don't know why they are changing the deadline and haven't heard anything about changing the first year curriculum order. The only live animals you touch during the first quarter are teaching horses (or wildlife if you choose to participate in that, which you will need the series completed before you're allowed to touch mammals).

I would just explain that given the fact that they are stupidly late in communicating this info to you (assuming they didn't send the email a month ago and you were just not regularly checking email), you can't pull the cash together to get the series done since you were planning to get it charged to your student account this entire time. Many students do the same thing because so many of us can only cover those vaccines with loan money. It's a little ridiculous to tell students they have to scrape together upwards of $1000 outside of your loans and on such short notice.

Nope they definitely JUST sent out the email, and wasn’t ever communicated prior. So it’s absolutely ridiculous that people are now having to rush to do them. And the email doesn’t actually say that the October deadline is no longer a thing, so it’s still kind of ambiguous. When I first read the email I didn’t really realize the deadline had been changed, because I didn’t think about it.

But they explicitly said you need to have the series done by August 27?

This is what we just got. When I read it I initially didn’t realize they were saying that it was now due August instead of October(which, the admitted students website still says you need them done before you enter clinics October 22). I didn’t really pay super close attention and just thought they were saying “if you’ve done the series already, get us your paperwork before school starts.”

Huh. Well, i'll be darned.
Yup. First anyone’s heard of it. It WAS listed under the “due August 20 5pm” tab, but said you need them done before you enter clinics in October (and still says that). But then registering for classes was under the due by June 29 5pm and that says you just have to have it done by the time classes start, so misleading on that title too. And then there’s also two things that we don’t get info about until closer to clinics that are also under August 20 soooo

I'm confused because I was planning on getting the series at school (around when orientation starts) and I didn't get any emails from them. Was it to Illinois email or email associated with your app?

Illinois email. Went to the whole cvm class of 22 listserv. I just have that set to come to my iPhone mail app along with my regular email. I ain’t about that checking-multiple-places life.

I’d definitely check your uiuc email and call them about the dates. Maybe if they get enough calls from people who NEED to start it when they get to school they’ll push the date back since it was VERY poorly communicated that it was due two months earlier.

It's said the same thing for the last 4-5 years/has always been listed under August 20! Anyone who can't meet this new deadline should definitely communicate that, whether it be finances or sheer inability to get the series arranged on such short notice. ASA will have to deal with that, as this is not your guys' fault. Welcome to Illinois 🙄

I just called Kari and she said it's just highly encouraged to get the series done by when school starts in case you want to start working with live animals right away. The official "due date" is still the October date.

Man, y'all hold no prisoners when trying to find out SDN peeps. Lol

That’ll change if we ever start calling each other our SDN names in public. I mean, we’ve never said any sort of name... yet
Idk if I can call you your real name. It’s too weird. I tend to just avoid names. I don’t think I said @cdoconn’s name once when I visited her HAHA

We’re gonna have to come up with names to call each other....

I don’t think I said your name either, unless I was introducing you to friends.
