Hi! I just interviewed and would like to email my interviewers a thank you email. How would I go about doing that, is there some place I can ask because one of my interviewers is not faculty but an alumni so I would not be able to find her on the website. Thanks 🙂

Contact Violeta Bonneville and she'll be able to help you out!

@LetItSnow you doing interviews any other weeks?

Well I'm back again folks, Minnesota interview round 2! I blew a tire on the way here that's good luck right??

Quick question for the tour tomorrow is it okay if we wear comfortable shoes? It says to wear business casual...

I love reading all about everyone's experiences! Fingers crossed that I'll be in this position next year! Good luck to everyone!!!

In theory closed, but not necessarily. Most of the interviewers aren’t involved in reviewing applications, but some are, so it is possible to have one who has seen your application. Happened to me.

Just wanted to pop in and say that it happened to me too, in last year's cycle. One of my interviewers told me that it was "very likely" that she had seen my application because she's one of the primary reviewers. Completely threw me off. I wish they would at least put a disclaimer in the interview portion of their website that the blind interview is not a guarantee. Also, for whatever it's worth, the website says the interview takes place around a table, but my interviewers were behind a desk and had me seated on the other side. The tone was not very conversational, either. My interviewers only spoke to either ask me questions or ask each other under their breath what each other thought they should do or ask next.

I think it depends on the interviewers. Mine were kind of conversational but not too much, however they both told me prior that they did not have access to my application.

I saw on a previous thread something about your GPA/GRE/experiences playing a role in whether or not you received an interview, then everyone is on the same playing field going forward and an acceptance is based on how you do in your interview. I don't remember what school they were talking about, but does anyone know if it's a similar process for UMN? Or do the candidates continue to be looked at as a whole vs just the interview? Just curious.

Paging @LetItSnow. Idk if he can help answer your question or if the selection process is confidential.

I agree with you, I think the conversational aspect really depends on who you get. I think the interviewer who saw my app was likely just being very careful not to show bias. This time around I’m just preparing as though it will be a fully business professional, non-conversational interview, and will welcome any conversational cues from the interviewers as a pleasant surprise 🙂

After I didn’t get in last year I had a meeting with the dean of admissions to ask her how I could improve and she broke down the whole process for me. They’re pretty open about it if you ask! Everything is on a points system. 1/3 of your points come from academics (including your GRE score), 1/3 non-academics, 1/3 interview. Everyone gets a score for the first two categories before interviewees are selected. Then they pick the top 200ish(?) scores (or whatever number of people they do interviews for) and those people get invites. Two people could get an interview but have completely different point values coming into the interview. So no, everyone who gets an interview at UMN is not in equal standing at that point. That’s why some people could completely bomb the interview and still get in; if their academic and non-academic scores are among the highest of the applicants it can make up for a bad interview. Likewise, someone who got an interview but had lower academic and non-academic point scores might really have to ace the interview in order to have a shot compared to the rest of the interviewees. As far as I know though, they can’t tell you where you stand before you go into the interview, so all you can do is give it your best shot. I would highly recommend requesting a meeting if you don’t get in. I was really glad I did it because I thought my academics were what didn’t get me in, but in reality I was in the top third of applicants in terms of my academic score and came up short in the non-academic category because other people had more hours of experience in some of those non-academic categories than I did. If I hadn’t met with her, I probably would have spent the last year working to improve my GRE score instead of working to get more non-academic experience.

So who is coming out next weekend? I interview the 16th. Also, is the interview MMI or a behavioral interview? I'm finding conflicting information on what to expect. Am I bouncing around from station to station with a different scenario to evaluate each time, or is it just one person asking me a serious of, 'describe a time when...' questions.
Thanks guys!

I’ll be there next weekend :hello: but my interview is Saturday the 17th. It’s my last (and coldest) interview.

I interviewed a few weeks ago (OOS); does anyone know when they will start contacting people? I think it was on a sheet they gave us, but I must have lost it 🙁

Hiya everybody - I interview Friday afternoon and will be flying in Friday morning from Chicago (couldn't do any earlier). However, we are projected to have up to 10 inches of snow, starting Thursday night and going into Friday. In case my plane were to be delayed/canceled due to the storm, would I be able to reschedule my interview time slot? I bought my tickets a while ago, so I wasn't able to predict the weather, haha. Decided to ask here in case anybody had similar experiences.
Already getting nervous for this interview, and checking the weather just exacerbated it...

1. As a current resident of Chicago, enough already with the snow amirite?
2. I would contact the UMN admissions peeps and just pre-empt the problem by discussing it with them. They'll be your best source of information and if you go in knowing there's a back up plan in place should the weather turn ugly you'll feel much better about it.

Congrats everyone who got an interview! I have a question that's kind of unrelated, but I think someone here might know the answer. I only recently started looking into the process of applying to vet school seriously. I've always been super dedicated to animals but I was really intimidated by the schooling. I have about 2/3 of my pre-reqs done or in progress and I want to apply to the U of M in 2018 but I haven't yet taken my GREs and from what I'm seeing at other schools, it seems like they usually want you to have your GRE done by October 1 of the preceding year. Does anyone here know if U of M has this same requirement or would I be okay to take the GRE in the next few months and apply this coming fall? Thanks in advance and I wish you all the best

You just have to have taken it (and have official score results) by the time you apply. I think that's true everywhere, there's no benefit or detriment to taking it earlier. The only reason to take it early would be to give yourself enough time to retake it should the first time go poorly.

Odd, I guess I based the assumption off the fact that UW Madison said "All 2018 applicants are required to take or retake the GRE examination by October 1, 2017, which includes the writing assessment." And then I was a little disappointed that I wouldn't be able to apply anywhere in 2018 since I assumed all vet schools would employ that requirement. I don't think I'll get in since I'll still be working on my bachelor's degree but if I have all the requirements met, I may as well try! Thanks for the insight, I'm excited to apply!

Hrm. I wonder if they meant that as in, all applicants for matriculation in 2018 .... i.e. all candidates who want to <start> in 2018? So you couldn't submit your application with a plan to take the GRE after submission?

My understanding has always been the same as @kcoughli .....

I may have misread it, thanks so much for the clarification. I did email the university to double check but I thought I might get a faster response here.

Nothing wrong with asking both! Get a quick answer here, get the best answer there. 🙂

It sounds worded weirdly, but I'm betting that's what they meant. I can't see any compelling reason they'd require you to have the GRE out of the way an entire year before application deadline.

So my interview is this Friday morning but I am staying for the Saturday morning information session/student ambassador lunch... anyone know the dress code for that?

Business casual.

Really, it won't matter, but I'd show up in something not overly dressy but not jeans 'n a t-shirt. You just never know who you might end up talking to and leaving an impression on. Yanno?

But you don't need to wear your "interview suit" or whatever.

Thanks! This is my last interview and I am really excited to finally retire this suit lol😉

I was just there this weekend and since people interview Saturday too, you wouldn't be out of place in interview-level attire, but you also could go slightly less dressy (nice pants and a blouse, skirt and shirt and cardigan, etc.). I personally wore a professional-looking dress Friday and Saturday but dressed it down slightly on Saturday with a cardigan. Like LetItSnow said you definitely just don't wanna be too casual in jeans or leggings or whatever! The info session & lunch happen right near where the interviews are so it'd be possible to run into interviewers during the day, so just keep that in mind.

Good luck!! 🙂

Does anyone wanna meet up for dinner Thursday or Friday night? I don't mind eating in hotel bars alone, but I always feel like i'm in a billy joel song.

I fly in Tristan afternoon. I’m down! My hotel is right by campus.

Those of you who are interviewing tomorrow, the orange kitten is coming with me to school in the morning, so if anyone needs a break from interview stress to cuddle a super affectionate kitten, let me know.

Which week did you interview? I might not have had her yet!

(Besides, if you end up coming here, first years get to meet both my kittens during their cerebellum unit in physiology 🙂 )

Does anyone know the dress code (or what typically people wear for male and female) for the meet and greet tomorrow night?

Just last weekend. I wanted to come find you at lunch to talk dual degree, but my tour was one of the last to come in and it seemed kind of impossible at that point since all the tables were full. I was able to talk to another dual degree 1st year student though 🙂
