University of Minnesota C/O 2022 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you! Do you happen to know, if pulled off, how much time the school gives me to give them a decision? I'm an indecisive person and I absolutely loved Minnesota, but was also accepted to a school closer to home (and went ahead and accepted since I won't know until after the 16th if UMN is even an option). So my thing is if UMN is an option, how much time will I have to make a decision (aka compare apartments, make a comparisons list between the school, curriculum, etc. You know, the basics ;))
That unfortunately I am unsure of, I was rejected last year :( But most schools average around 2-4weeks so definitely not long! **anyone feel free to correct me on this**

I guess in case I'm offered a seat off of the waitlist, I'll go ahead and ask my questions now. I saw something on an older thread that said UMN doesn't have an exotics department, yet I know they still offer some exotic type electives. Can anyone expand on this? (this isn't a huge deciding factor for me as I want to do mixed animal, but still love exotics lol). For current students, how are the professors? Are they willing to help you as needed? I saw, again on a previous thread, that professors are kept based on publishing and as a result, some professors that are great but don't publish a lot may be replaced occasionally.

And then more of a random question, any current students keep a horse near the vet school or know people that do? I would want to bring my horse with me, but he's high maintenance and requires stall board (especially since he'd be coming from Florida and isn't used to the cold).

oh man hes in for a surprise
I know :sorry: I mean he lived in NY until he sold as a 2 year old. But for the past 5 years he's been in Florida. That's honestly what's holding me back the most. If it was just me moving, if offered MN I'd go in a heartbeat. But with him to consider I'm not sure how he'd adjust. Granted I've found quite a few barns that are at least insulated if not also heated.

Not a current student, but my interviewer Dr Mickey Trent was/is the Comp zoo veterinarian. The school has a partnership with the zoo so you can go there to take electives. The raptor center also is part of the veterinary school.

I'd talk to your vet now and see what they think and see if they have any tips for helping him adjust if you do get in. horses DO move from warm to cold climates all the time, it just takes some planning. He may even adjust better since you're planning on stall board instead of pasture so he'll be a bit more protected from the cold. I'd contact your vet soon and get their opinion and suggestions on moving him and helping him acclimate so that if your vet thinks he'll be fine, you can say yes a lot quicker if you get that call.

Can't answer the horse stuff but can chime in on the exotics. There are a few exotics electives and rotations you can do. I took all of them as most lab animal species are under the exotics umbrella. They were decent, but I wouldn't have come out of that feeling 100% confident being an exotics-practitioner. That being said, if you do exotics-related externships you'll get that much more experience and I would say that our ZEAW (zoo exotics avian/aquatics wildlife) club seems to be fairly active in the wet lab department. There's opportunities to get involved at the Wildlife rehab center, the raptor center, and the Como Zoo if you make the right connections in your classes.

The professor question is really hard to answer. Many classes are taught by multiple professors and each person has their own personality and way of doing things. It's basically like any school I would think, there are some professors you'll get along with and really enjoy and others who won't mesh well due to whatever reason. Overall I think they were mostly in the "willing to help as needed" category. No idea about the "kept based on publishing" bit, but part of me doubts it? Idk... Can't really help with the horse question but I know there are students who board their horses

Does UMN have any type of mentor program for the incoming first years (like paired with a 2nd year, etc)?

I will definitely do that! Luckily I’m on great terms with my vet since I’ve volunteered with them for 5 years so I always have them as a resource when it comes to picking their brains ;)

My information may be becoming outdated ('17 grad) but they don't have a "buddy" system like other schools do. They do have GOALE (which is their version of VLE) at the start of the school year so you do end up meeting people and professors that way.

There are a lot of horsey options in the area, the Twin Cities has a pretty big horse community.

No buddy system that pairs w/ an upperclassman but there's a mentoring program that pairs you with a vet, I think... I'm not in it so I'm not entirely sure what the details of it are.

There are also some student groups that focus on helping first years transition to the school using practice tests and little study groups and stuff.

The bolded is true! I participated first year but didn't find it especially helpful (probably because my mentor vet was a 3+ hour drive away and didn't respond to emails...) but it may be more helpful in different circumstances

Due to personal concerns (my poor cat :() and my overly anxious personality I hadn't posted my stats/decision yet!! Moral of the story: Apply smart, Apply yourself, and keep applying. If it's truly your passion and you don't see yourself being anything else stick to it! If you have questions feel free to PM me, I promise I'm helpful and supportive :) Thank you to my SDN family who has always supported me you all are the real MVPs!!:love:

Thank you so much!!
My stats are very similar to yours for GPA and experience so this is uplifing! Thank you for being open and sharing this with me. :)
So you applied to 9 schools this last cycle? I am planning on applying to UMN, MSU, and U if I because I’ve heard they are more friendly towards lower GPAs. How did you decide to apply to the others?
Unfortunately my IS(UPenn) is extremely expensive regardless of where I live so I’m not totally sure I will apply there.

I emailed to confirm that they got my waitlist acceptance (because I am an anxious person) and they said they would be sending an update out today.

Do they call to make offers? Or is it just all done via email this time around? Any clue?

They generally call if you get accepted and eventually send you an email. For just a waitlist movement update, they only send you an email.

Just got the email update and I've already moved down 23 spots!

I’m number 21, what number are you? I havnt heard anything yet
I'm 16 on the IS waitlist and haven't heard anything, but I do not expect to be accepted today, just would like to know where my new ranking is. Although, it would be a nice surprise to get a call.

Just received an email stating I am now number 8 on the IS waitlist. Not sure if this is a good number to be sitting at as an IS student, but I'm not giving up.

Number 13 OOS and got the call about an hour ago! So happy

Current students: How is the process of receiving health care for your furry friends through the U? I know for routine stuff you'd probably want to go somewhere else, but for something that needs a specialist?

Ok not a current student but I asked this at the panel. For specialty care, it is possible to get a good discount if you can sell it as a teaching moment.

Nothing so far. I have a suspicion that they may do more movement tomorrow, since that's the deadline for everyone who was accepted last monday. I'm not sure though. I'm next on the list, so I'll be posting on here as soon as I hear something!

Ohh I hope you get a call tomorrow! I’m number 8 right now so I’m not holding my breath... but I’m still hoping.

Still nothing? I am anxiously awaiting a waitlist update. Currently #10.
