I am having a really tough time deciding between these two choices.

I want to do some basic science researches (neuroscience) as well, so which one is better in terms of med school and research (people, funding etc.)? Any advice is appreciated! 🙂🙂

I think UTMB is a little stronger in research, but I just liked the environment better at UTHSCSA when I interviewed there last year. Basically, if you want to be involved in research, you can do it at any medical school.

Moving to School Specific Discussions.

My impression as an interviewee (not student or anyone with any real, facts based knowledge) was that UTMB had better focused research (aerospace, infectious disease, etc) coordinating to their special programs. Of course, like any school, they had general, field-specific research too... but they sure spent a LOT of time telling us about their special programs, which lead me to believe.... you get the point.

However, I think UTHSC-SA had better general research and more money in all of the fields, so in your shoes, I would pick UTHSC-SA. Also because it's in an actual city, I think it gives you better opportunities.

Just my two cents. 🙂

Best of luck choosing!

I am speeking as an interviewee and I agree with DrHiner that UTMB seemed a little more fit for students who wanted to purpure a long term career in research because they do have the Galveston National Lab. That said, all medical schools try to accomodate their students who want to do research and i am sure UTHSC SA and UTMB are no exception.
