2024-2025 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On the Physician Scientist forum I only saw one person share a UTMB acceptance from January.
I think it would be appropriate to send a continued interest/update email to the MD/PhD committee and see where you stand
I did and only got a thanks for the update. No other information. Only asking again now because of the Plan to Enroll.

Got a reapp workshop flyer - not the communication I was hoping for 🥲. Take it as not a great sign 🥲.

Did they send reapplicant workshop email to everyone on waitlist

What's the consensus on being in a fraternity and the Greek life in general at UTMB? Going into my first year, I kinda wanted to just get my own apartment and chill, but being in a frat would cut my expenses significantly, it seems. First questions that come to mind:

1. Would I have to give up a lot of time for frat activities/life, or is it flexible?
2. What's living at the frat house like?
3. Are there any frats to avoid? Is there hazing?
4. Are the frats different from each other?
5. If yes, what should I know about each?

Any insight would be huge because I cannot, for the life of me, find any "geed" or insider student opinions/perspectives on the frats (other than the advertising). Don't wanna join then end up bamboozled:grumpy:

There’s only one frat, it’s more like living in a co- op and sharing cooking/ cleaning duties
Do you like living in a group or need your quiet?

There’s more frats now. There’s one co-ed, two true men-only fraternities, and one sorority. Two of them have housing. They all have very distinct personalities; the frats will “rush” (as in, there is a process to apply and they select members for bids, but nothing as extreme as true Greek rush), the sorority is more or less open enrollment.

It’s certainly not like undergrad Greek life, so if that’s what you’re wanting, that’s not it. It is very much a “you get what you put in” experience. I know some folks who are in frats who only show up for events once in a blue moon; others are very active. It just depends on how involved you want to be. I’m technically in the sorority but I only show up to maybe one event a year and participate in the mentorship program, and I treat it like any other student org I’m part of.

Is there a particular one you’re interested in?

I just want to note that the new cat profile pic is adorable and feels like an unexpected SDN plot twist.

“Everybody wants to be a cat
Because a cat’s the only cat
Who knows where it’s at”

Lyrics by Al Rinker, sung by Scatman Crothers in
Aristocats 1970

I like both, and have done both, but I'd slightly prefer living in a group just so I don't sit in bed all day.

Honestly, I wasn't initially interested in any, but since only TKY and PX offer housing, those are probably the only two I'll consider. Could you expand on the "distinct personalities" you mentioned. Everything I've read about TKY and PX in their advertising sounds cool, but I don't really know what being involved in each actually looks like (day-to-day, or even just what the people are like in each).

Keep in mind that the "personality" of the house's residents will change from year to year as grads leave and new people come in

I would not take myself as an expert on fraternity lifestyle or personality. I’m a 30-something crochety cat lady who does not interface with the typical fraternity scene. I know some TKY brothers and quite a few Phi Chi brothers but solely through academic small groups and research collaborations, not socially. I highly recommend you reach out to some of the brothers who have posted in the FB and other groups to get a sense of the social vibe. You can also PM me and I can get you connected directly with a few folks too.

I would NOT join a frat solely for housing. You’ll probably come off disingenuous during rush (they can tell) and if you don’t fully jive with your (many) house brothers you probably won’t enjoy it regardless of how cheap the rent is.

I can elaborate on the distinct personalities of the Greek life here.

Phi Chi- co-ed, have a house, rent is cheap but I’ve heard it’s pretty run down, I’ve also heard their chef isn’t awesome. Their members seem very close with each other and seem to mostly socialize with others in their organization

TKY- they are nice, all male, have a house but once again rent cheat but pretty run down. Depends on how important that is to you. Their chef is great from what I hear. Not in a bad way but they remind me of the typical frat boy you would think of in undergrad.

Beta- all male no house. They are academic weapons and nice boys. They get school done and are very involved in campus/ very good at research.

KXD- best girly group imo. They do so many fun events and they have good friendships within.

Keep in mind- there’s not that many members in every fraternity per class so the majority of the class is not in any of these orgs and that’s totally fine. You will also have required activities that get you up and out of the house almost every day

Hello, does anybody know when scholarships would be announced for this school. For recruitment and through the application?

Recruitment ones would have been granted either before the match or shortly after (to entice you to come to our school- doesn’t make sense for it to be much later).

The applications, historically folks have heard back in early fall, I believe. Think August/September.

Any current students know how many of their class got in through WL, if any? And if you got in through WL did you do anything post-decision?
Yes, a lot of people get in via waitlist, especially towards May.

Not sure what you mean by the last part.

Through my research it seems like it is 10-15. Even from SDN roundup the last couple years, the number in and around that range. Official Admissions sources say 20-25 offers made, and that 10-15 get off the list.

And on April 30th, people with an acceptance to another Texas school are locked in on that one, right? We can’t get selected off waitlists past that point?

You are eligible for an offer from your TMDSAS WL schools until 5 pm on May 15.

So will offers to Texas Residents on the WL not be made after 5pm on May 15th? I thought WL offers can be made until the week before orientation.
May 15 is the last day Texans who already have a TMDSAS acceptance can get an offer from a TMDSAS Waitlist.
The answer you quoted from me above was specific to the person who asked, who already held a TMDSAS spot.

Unmatched Texans and OOS applicants get any offers made after May 15th
