So, I may or may not have been accepted at one or both of these two schools (the two medical schools in Wisconsin, those playing along at home), and I may or may not be having trouble choosing which one I want to attend. Any advice?

How much of an impact will which school I choose (of these two) have on how competitive I am when applying for residencies?

Thanks, SDN!😀

both schools assuming you do well (as far as most us md schools go) will give you good residency options. As far as which to choose I would go UW madison easily. Everything there is brand new facilities wise, its WAY cheaper the MCW, they offer so much for students there in both a very strong research and great clinical training. Im not even in state and im considering going there over my IS schools. Uw madison is just really impressive and one of the best med schools i have visited. From the students to the staff to the training it just seems everything there is awesome. The only downside i can think of is that 2nd year is A-F grading. Not too big a deal to me but some really care. It certainly didnt seem to make the school competitive at all and the 1st year is P/f.

Thanks for your input!

That's how I've been leaning since I got that acceptance--UW Madison seems to be the better option. What about compared to say, Case Western or Pitt? Being in state makes Madison a really attractive choice for me, and I can't really come up with enough outstanding reasons to justify considering either CW or Pitt over Madison.

Thoughts?

As far as Case Western vs. UW I think that it's up to your individual learning style and fit. I really liked CW when I visited but the PBL groups seemed to be an inefficient way to learn the material. The students there also mentioned that the PBL groups left some gaps as far as preparing students for step1. While the clinical facilities were awesome at both places (UW is a bit of a maze but really nice), the lecture halls at Case seemed out-dated and old. In addition, Case is waaay more expensive especially if you're a WI resident for UW. Just my 2 cents, I liked both schools but I was far more impressed with all UW had to offer. Do keep in mind though that I like the statewide campus, since it allows students to get a wide range of experience during 3rd and 4th yr...some students dont' like it. Good luck making your decision! :luck:

compared to case and pitt id take UW as an IS resident easily. I mean its not even a close match. Unless harvard or something like that comes your way you should take the IS tuition at UW mad. Its an amazing school with every opportunity you would need both research and community wise. The IS tuition there is so cheap its impossible for me to justify paying 40k+ at pitt or Case. Also if you are worried about "prestige" or "ranking" as it seems you may be since you are asking about case and pitt? UW is highly ranked in both research and primary care. Its similar to pitt and better then case as far as that goes (though i think rankings are fairly useless.) Also the state-wide campus thing is something that is very attractive at least to me. It provides you a great experience that a lot of schools i feel cant rival. The students there really seemed to like it and feel it gave you a better overall clinical experience compared to other schools that dont do this.

Pitt is easily the superior school. However, unless finances are not an issue, it is hard to recommend going to an OOS school if you have the option of a good IS school.

Consider MCW if you might want to do: Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Emergency Med, or Radiology. However, you'll have to ask yourself if it's worth the extra 13K or so per year in tuition.

otherwise go to Madison and save the money.

What makes you say that? Say I was interested in Pediatrics or Anesthesiology-- How much difference will MCW make vs. UW? If I were at UW, I've heard that it might be possible to do an away rotation during 3rd or 4th year at MCW for something like Peds or Anesthesiology.

At this point I'm really leaning towards Madison due to tuition costs, but both Peds (some specialty in peds, that is) and Anesthesiology high on my interest list.

I wouldn't let that be the determining factor. Even if MCW has superior departments in those two areas, nothing at either school is really going to hold you back.

MCW is very strong at matching anesthesiology, something like 25 people matched/scrambled into anesthesiology in 2009. There's a 3rd year elective rotation where you do 1 month in anesthesiology, which will help a lot for matching. Both the anesthesiology and peds program well known.

But like I said, the advantage may not be worth 13 grand a year.

The clinical resources and patient diversity are far superior at Case and Pitt. Madison is relatively small and students mentioned that they have to compete for resources. I interviewed at all three and I do have to say I was impressed with UW, but I would choose Case or Pitt over UW primarily because of these two factors. I'm OOS, though, but definitely something to consider.
