VA-MD c/o 2021 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is my understanding that neither school offers alternate interview dates. If I get invited to both, I'm going to ask for an alternate date, but I am not holding my breath....

VMCVM does not offer make-up interview dates AFAIK. We had *one* girl who was offered a tele-conference substitute, but she had an serious medical emergency that made it difficult for her to atend.

So we can't sign up for our interview yet, right? We have to wait until they send us another email? Just out of curiosity, is there a date anyone prefers?

whats the best way to move from the airport at Roanoke to the university?

That was my understanding. I'm hoping for Saturday so I only have to be in Blacksburg one night.

The Roanoke airport has a few rental car companies. There is also a bus system that goes from the Roanoke airport to somewhere on campus at VT, but I've never ridden on it (http://smartwaybus.com/smartway.html).

Does anyone know if there is a way to find out how long the interview waitlist is or where we stand on that list

I see you on every thread of each school I've applied to, getting interviews here and there!

Haha well I definitely did I apply to a ton of schools! Honestly I didn't foresee myself getting as many interviews as I have so far. All 3 of my GPA's (c, sci, last 45) are pretty average as are my GRE scores, and I figured it would be hard to come across as "unique" (even with diverse experiences and a good PS) when you're going up against 1000+ other applicants. But I'm definitely not complaining! 😉

They will not tell you where you are on the waitlist for interviews. frustrating.

Congrats to everyone who got interviews! I'm sorry to those who didn't, and best of luck with your other schools! My top pick flat out denied me last year (waited until January to send me the email too, ugh) and so while VA was not my top pick, I've found it's the perfect curriculum and tracking for my interests compared to the school I wanted more. You never know! It may be the next vet school email you get, it may not be until a different cycle, but the school that was meant for you will find you someday.

As a heads up, if your year is anything like our's then you won't get to decide your interview day or time. First and second years start school as soon as interview weekend ends, so there will likely be a bunch of us there if you guys want to hang out and get to know the town! (You'll meet a few of us at the dinner and on interview days too!)

They are letting us choose our day and time this year but there's been a delay in sending us the email to set up an account.

Does anyone know of anyone that has been about to make both the V-M CVM interview and the CSU interview? I can't imagine it would be easy to schedule both with the inflexible time period.

Oh, sweet! You guys are lucky! I got stuck with 8am Sunday morning last year at no choice of my own haha

That doesn't make any sense.... Thats crazy! Hang in there!

I believe CSU only recently started interviewing applicants (OOS didn't used to require it) so I don't know if you'll find many people in that situation.

I traveled to CSU recently and the flight logistics were a pain. Traveling from Roanoke to Denver requires a connection and CSU is about an hour drive away from the airport. It's a large travel time and unfortunately I don't think you can rely on being able to do both interviews in the same weekend unless you can schedule them to the extremes (really early or late).

Good point. I was thinking that in terms of times but had forgotten that they haven't done interviews before (or at least recently). Well, hopefully I won't need to choose! But I might. I will know on the 16th (I hope)!

Same for me, VT is my instate and undergrad, when I got an interview invite I was so shocked I could barely talk, I'm verrrrryyyy mediocre when it comes to my app. Congrats on all the interviews!

Current CSU student here - yeah, this is their first year doing interviews in a looooooong time, and everybody (OOS, WICHE, IS, combined programs) must interview. Not sure if they have plans for rescheduling interviews or offering flexibility in the interview times applicants can pick or anything. I'm also not sure if they have contingencies in place for inclement weather, though I would imagine that they've at least thought about it given that interviews are in January and if weather is extremely terrible the I-25 tends to get shut down. We don't usually get bad snows until later in the spring though, so that shouldn't realistically be a huge issue.

Also, my god, getting from DIA to FoCo is such a pain sometimes. I hate how far away the airport is.

Oh my. Thank you for this information. I have no idea if I will get an interview at CSU but I was hoping I would be able to make both if I did. It doesn't sound promising. I'll hope for the best and see what comes 🙂.

Yeah, travel times really depend on weather and traffic (though it's usually about an hour or so from DIA to the school)! If you're cutting things close (trying to do two interviews in a day for example) I doubt you'd manage, but it may be more doable if you had one early on that Saturday and one later in the day on that Sunday, so you could hopefully fly out the night before.

This question is a little off topic, but can someone who either went to VT as an undergrad or goes there now at vmrcvm tell me how Blacksburg is? I'm a Virginia resident from the beach and go to school right now in Atlanta. How small is Blacksburg. How is the restaurant scene? Is it annoying having to share space with SO MANY undergrads? I really liked UVA when I visited last year: so much fun. Is Blacksburg as fun? Most of my friends who went there would frequently go the Cville on the weekends, but my UVA friends never did. Is there a fun nightlife scene that doesn't revolve around fraternities and house parties? I would really appreciate any response because these are my main reservations about attending vmrcvm if I do indeed get in. Going from city life to small town life might be hard to adapt to.

I had similar reservations and as a city lover it is a big adjustment. However, realistically you will be busy enough that this won't be a huge deal. There are some decent restaurants at varying price levels but a lot of it is typical college food. The undergrad population isn't a big deal unless you're trying to find parking specifically on the main campus (we are pretty isolated on the whole).

Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.

I'm from VB and went to VT! Blacksburg is similar to UVA, but smaller. It is still fun, but downtown is contained to a pretty small area. There are some great bars and restaurants, but less of a food scene than Charlottesville. Definitely more of a typical college town. That said, it is full of great people and everyone is exceptionally kind and loves Blacksburg and the school. There are lots of young locals who graduated from VT and stuck around. As far as undergrads, there are a ton, but there are also a LOT of graduate students. I think you just have to find the right place to live. There are certain apartment communities to definitely avoid as a grad student, but otherwise its a great community! It is small town life, but a great one.

Current first year here - good luck to all of you! Don't worry if you get waitlisted at first, it will all work out. Feel free to message me with any questions!
Thank you, OOS wait listed

So nobody had received the email to setup the guest account for interview times right? We are still all waiting for them to fix a tech issue?

Looks like it to me! The last email I have is the third one from yesterday saying it was a technical issue. Glad to know it's not just me though!

Same. Double checked my spam as well, lol. Nothing yet, so hope it's resolved soon!

I got an email with a link to Canvas and another email with instructions on how to schedule the interview about 2.5 hours after the initial interview invitations were sent out. I was able to sign up with no problem but maybe it's because I was at VT last year and already had a Canvas account?

Generally, most people either really like Blacksburg or really don't. I'm technically a native of Northern VA, but I've spent about 11 years total in Bburg and personally I love it. It's beautiful here, tons of nature right outside your door, and the townies are some of the nicest you've ever met. Whenever I go back to NoVA and all I can think of is how rude people are and how stuffy/crowded it is.

However, if you're more of a city person and like lots of fancy restaurants, clubs, etc. you might be a little disappointed (although there is always Roanoke - there is a bit more "classic city" stuff to do there). If you like craft beer and hiking you're set 😛. There *is* a decent amount to do in Blacksburg, you just have to be proactive, get involved in the community, and hunt for it.

Hmm... That would make sense. The last email I got said they were having issues because of the "number of people uploaded." Maybe that meant uploaded to Canvas?

I just called and was told no scheduling went out yet. How did someone get the scheduling already if admissions said their computers havent sent it out. Just saying it doesn't make sense?

I'm signed up for January 14 at 10:30 am. I was able to sign up yesterday, but I was a VT undergrad and already had a canvas account.

Given the email sent out earlier today about the suspension of sign-ups until they work out the kinks...I'm going to guess it is just VT undergrads who've been able to schedule so far.

so much madness! so the question of the hours, did anyone got the NEW email that they are going to send with the canvas login info? I'm starting to laugh at all this madness of emails and link lol

I just got the email to sign up for a time.

Really want to get plane tickets but not sure how Colorado is going to shake out...

are there going to give a tour on interview dates?

This is what I want to know.. I need to leave that night so I hope any tour doesn't go late.

Wondering the same. I'd like to know all the info before booking anything, just in case!

Finally! Jan. 14 at 1pm.

I saw the same thing mmmdreamerz did, tours after your interview.

Last year, this was a campus tour, not a vet college tour. Not sure if that's changed or not.

I just booked an airbnb for that weekend. Would anybody want to stay in the same apartment (there are two separate bedrooms/bathrooms) and split the price? It would be 60$ for the whole weekend. I am staying there from Friday to Sunday. You obviously wouldn't have to be there the entire time I am.

Gonna shoot you a PM

OOS applicant that is interview waitlisted. Does anyone know how many applicants are usually "interview waitlisted?"
