VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2026

Hey all! I have a LOR writer that I'm worried is not going to finish my LOR by September 15th - she still hasn't even accepted my request on VMCAS. My question is whether I should leave her request open on VMCAS, or whether it will be a problem for me if by the time the deadline has passed I have one recommendation not fulfilled? She's my fourth LOR, so I'm fine on that front, just wondering whether having the unfulfilled request will be a problem/whether it's better to just delete the request. Thanks y'all!

@lynne8832 I also like your topic. Vet med is full of death. I still remember my first death in our teaching hospital because she was also my first patient. Death is something we need to be able to at least tolerate. I feel like I can handle euthanasias well because of close losses (my younger sister died during my second year of veterinary school). So keep your topic; you may connect to more people than you think

Hi friends! So I applied to NCSU last year knowing I was missing the animal nutrition class- I just wanted to go through the whole application experience anyways to prepare for this round. Anyways, I was entering my senior year classes and grades in VMCAS and saw I put a 4 credit hour class accidentally as a 3 last year. As you know, VMCAS locks your grades to prevent you from changing anything you entered in the previous cycle. I am not sure what to do, as this is a mandatory prereq class (BIO 202 w/ Lab). I know they take in our transcripts too, so should I worry? I don't even know how to fix it because it is locked! Help! Has this happened so anyone?

This is something that you should contact VMCAS about. They should be able to help get it fixed.

I had a similar experience but with an error in the names of classes that I took that was locked because I entered it a previous cycle. When I spoke with VMCAS they said it would be fine and that they are not able to change it. I still suggest speaking to VMCAS to at least try and see if they have any insight.

With many vet schools I found they didn’t really care at the end of the day about credit hours for classes. I applied to many schools that I did not meet the prereq credit hours but still received an interview/acceptance.

Hello! I have a question regarding the VMCAS application. I recently submitted and was verified for this upcoming cycle. I realized I entered my bachelor degree wrong (yes, I am dumb). I went into the portal and it allowed me to switch my degree even though my app has already been verified, but it made me "re-finalize" my transcripts where you enter the additional information (AP/institutional/honors credit). Under my status, it still says my application is complete, and my transcript/LORs have been received. I am freaking out that I may have done something to mess with the process or negate my verification, though I don't know why I would have been given the option to make a change to my degree if this wasn't allowed, considering everything else is un-editable.

Thoughts? Could use some feedback/reassurance.

Reach out to VMCAS - if it’s nothing, they’ll tell you and you won’t have to worry; if it’s something they have to fix, it’ll get done sooner.

I'm asking for classes like math for instance, some schools say they'll take 3 credits. But I took calc and algebra. So which will they take? Or for humanities, I took a bunch of those classes, how do they choose which to take? or even for electives, it'll say again like 3 credits and mention genetics, histology, etc. But I've taken both genetics and histo, so do they choose the the highest grade or

Hello! I'm looking for some advice for a supplemental application essay...it's the diversity and inclusion topic. There's obviously a lot that is involved with D&I so I'm wondering if it would be best to focus on one aspect of it? Long story short, I got really sick my freshmen year of high school and ended up losing my hearing for a few weeks. It came back 100% in one ear and about 85% in the other ear, so I decided to learn American Sign Language in the event that I ever lose it again. It made me realize that as a doctor I want the deaf community in my area to know they can come to me and we can have clear communication with each other, no pen and paper stuff. My dad also works with disabled adults, many of which are deaf, and me knowing ASL has helped me teach my dad how to communicate with his clients. Would that be something good to write about for this topic?

I hate that you went through that, but what an amazing story! Personally I think this would be a great thing to talk about for a D&I essay

do the specific essays for each university have to be completely different than the VMCAS personal statement? or can i reuse some paragraphs?

What about competitive shooting? I got several awards for that, but that seems to be a controversial topic sometimes, and I don't want to hurt my chances.
Hi! Did you ever get a response for this? I too have experience in competitive shooting but its an evergrowing controversial topic and I don't want to hurt my chances.

You can copy material between different schools’ specific applications, and there’s no rule against doing the same with the personal statement but it’s highly inadvisable because it’s going to the same admissions committee as your school-specific essay and that will not convey that you care about and are putting effort into your application. You might end up touching on the same topics if that’s unavoidable from the prompt, which is totally fine, but try to think of new examples and develop new concepts as much as possible. Remember that space is a huge limiting factor in communicating all the reasons why you’re a great candidate, so make the most of every opportunity you’re given to tell them 🙂

Every school will be able to see your personal statement so I would not recommend doing this they will most likely notice the repeated paragraphs. You can briefly mention things in your personal statement again but try to use the essays for the specific schools as an opportunity to talk about something not mentioned in the personal statement! I would at the very least reword the paragraphs.

I'm specifically applying to UIUC. Does anyone know how much selecting our "most important" experiences matter? I have many experiences listed, and I would assume that the school will look at all of them, but I'm wondering what impact selecting the "most important" experiences has?

(yes, I am dumb)
You're not dumb, just made a mistake 🙂 I'm hoping VMCAS can give you some info.

I don't remember this being a thing when I applied. Maybe @SkiOtter and @SportPonies remember. But it would be a part of phase 2. I would pick the experience that gave you the most conviction in becoming a veterinarian.

I would say put this experience. You're applying with and will be joining classes with a wide variety of life perspectives. We had people in our classes ranging from beef cattle producers to animal rights activists. Competitively shooting guns at stationary targets in a safe controlled environment will be fine.

Yeah I definitely do not remember this at all

It was just added this year, but VMCAS doesn't provide much information on it! This is all they list through the Help Center.

"Once you have added all your experiences, click the star icon next to an experience in the My Experiences list to mark it as your most important. You can select up to 5 experiences to highlight as your most important."

So this is VMCAS specific, not UIUC specific?

Correct! I'm sorry; I probably should've phrased that better! 🤦‍♀️
Ah! Then there's the possibility the schools might not use this information at all and the AAVMC is simply using this information for demographics. Who knows. Don't overthink it.

Hello,

I have submitted my VMCAS 3 days ago and is on the process for waiting verification. I just had a couple questions with regards to the process, if anyone would be willing to reply or knew the answers.

1. When do we choose our recommendation letters out of all to be sent to specific schools? I have about 6 that I have gotten in total, but most schools only require a minimum of 3, thus wondering when we get to choose specific ones to be sent to specific schools. (I'm guessing this happens after verification?)

2. I have only sent 3 applications out of 7 to be verified from VMCAS as I am still working on supplemental essays for the remains. Thus I was wondering, after the 3 are verified, would the remaining 4 be sent without delay when I finish the supplemental and submit? Since the application is already verified from the previous 3 schools? I was guessing they would since all the schools get the same application except were different in supplemental essays.

Or do all applications need to go through verification individually 1 by 1, hence each application sent to each school takes about 2 weeks?

Thanks so much in advance.

I'll start by admitting it's been a while since I applied and I know some things have changed since then, but I think I can offer a little bit of input and hopefully someone with more recent experience than me can give you more details 🙂

1. Unless this is something that has changed, every school you apply to gets all of your LORs so even if they only require 3, you don't get to pick and choose what goes where.

2. If I'm understanding this correctly, you're wondering if your last 4 will still need verified if the first 3 are done by the time you finish your last few supplementals? If so, I'm fairly certain the answer is yes they still have to go through the verification process. Even though it's all essentially the same information, they have to go through and make sure there aren't any issues.

I couldn't find a thread specific to LSU, so I figured I would ask here. On their supplemental page of VMCAS, one of the questions is to provide a "fun fact." My response box is only allowing 25 characters, which is not a lot. Is everyones like this/is anyone else finding it hard to provide a fun fact that is that short?

Would it be bad, or at least viewed unfavorably, to not have a recommendation from a major vet experience? I did essentially all of my veterinary experience hours at one hospital, but dealing with the vet there is literally killing me. I asked her for a recommendation back in May and her response was basically, f*** off, it will get done. It didn't get done by the date I'd asked her to complete it and when I emailed her back she essentially said it will get done if it gets done. This is the only veterinarian who really knows me "well" but I just can't deal with her anymore and was wondering if I should begin trying to find a vet who I know only at the surface level to write a recommendation. Will this look bad considering both the potential shallow vet reference and the lack of reference from a major experience? PLEASE help!

You can only protect yourself here. I would definitely choose another vet and present them with a resume and offer to let them read your essays to get to know you and your goals better. I would try for someone who writes good records, because hopefully that means they can write good letters. haha

So sorry you’re going through this. I would find another veterinarian to write a recommendation if you can.

I'm in the same boat for your second question and I wasn't sure, so I asked someone who works at VMCAS if my application would have to go through the verification process again and they said it would only be verified once. The direct quote from them explaining this was: "No. You will be submitting a verified application to them, so once the submission gets processed, the application is verified." I read this as once your application has been verified, it's verified for all of the schools that you're submitting to. I'm not sure if anyone reads this differently, but I'm pretty sure it won't take 2 weeks for each school and should be about 2 weeks from the first time you submitted.

I applied previously with GRE scores and was not planning on sending this time. However, I did delete them in the standardized test section but the scores are still on the application when I download the pdf. Is there a way to fully get rid of them on the app or will they stay there since they were verified before on my app last time? Thank you!

Some schools on VMCAS ask which recommendations you want to use for their ELOR requirements (ie Tufts) but otherwise all schools will get your ELORs. I feel like I’ve read on one school’s website that they just read the first 3 since they only require 3 eLORs but that would be school dependent how it works.

Anyone have experience with VMCAS sending their application back to them to fix mistakes? I accidentally added my study abroad school to "colleges attended" and so I'm not in line for verification because it has it listed as waiting for that transcript. I contacted VMCAS help and they said they would internally send the app back to me to fix it, but I'm just freaking out a little esp since it's a long weekend!

Hey, so, I'm in the process of entering my experience and part of that experience includes work as a claims adjuster for pet insurance claims. Any idea what category that should go under? I find none of the category options (ie animal (non-veterinary), veterinary (with a vet), non-animal related employment, etc.) to be quite right, since I was doing veterinary-involved work (reviewing medical conditions and records, etc.) but wasn't working directly with a veterinarian. What would you do?

I would put non animal related employment because you are not working hands on with animals and you're not under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. Definitely still a valuable experience and will help you in the field!

I'd ask your top choice what they'd recommend, and do that.

Thank you both! I'll definitely ask them. I already have a lot of actual non-animal-related experience on there, so it feels weird to put this under non-animal-related work experience, as well, since it is animal-related and even veterinary-related, just not hands-on. I'll see what the schools have to say! Thank you!

Hi there! I am currently finalizing my application, and I just wanted to double and triple check before I submit. This is my second year applying, and I used the base of my last app to start this one on VMCAS. My main question is:

Do I need to reorder transcripts from schools where nothing would have changed? I reordered from my main school where I had updated records to send, but on some of the old community colleges that just say "Received 09/09/2020 4:42 PM" from last cycle, do I need to reorder those again?

Nope. If you haven’t taken any more classes since the last time you sent it you should be good for that school

Hi there, I was wondering how long it took for anyone who submitted their apps for it to get verified? I submitted them 2 days ago and they still haven't gotten verified. However, a friend of mine turned them in a day after me and she got immediately verified. Is this cause my 3rd LOR wasn't submitted yet? The VMCAS website said that verification doesn't require all LOR to be submitted and that verification occurs in the order of submission. Should I be worried? Thanks for any responses in advance!

I wouldn’t worry too much about this. Yes, VMCAS generally verifies applications as they are submitted, but it’s not always in perfect order. As you’ve said, as well, eLORs shouldn’t have bearing on that process (of course, just make sure that that least three are in before the end of day on September 15th!).

I would personally give it another few days. I’d say that if it’s been about a week since your submission date with no change, then call or email VMCAS to see what’s up.

I submitted on the 20th and I’m still not verified. I suggest calling them first thing next week and ask them to check carefully whether they need anything else from you. Otherwise you may not be able to get any extra info to them in time.

I say this because I called just over a week after I submitted and they said my application was fine, just in line. However, I called back yesterday and they said one of my transcripts had been flagged since the 27th and my verification was on hold! However, the verification team hadn’t, and still haven’t, changed my status to undelivered and haven’t emailed me to actually tell me they need more info!!

The guy I spoke to was great and said he’d contact the verification team and check what was going on. I called again today as I hadn’t heard from him and they hadn’t got back to him. After hours on the phone/emailing back and forth and a lot of luck, I think I have the info they need?!

Apparently if anything gets flagged you should be emailed straight away and your application status changes to undelivered. I’m hopefully an anomaly but it really doesn’t hurt to keep checking up! I just hope I won’t be putting my life on hold for a year because of their error!!

Good luck!

Letters of Recommendation:

I have 6 LoR and some of the schools I applied to will only review 3. At the time when I submitted, I had 5 but last minute my current boss came to me and offered to write me an LoR. I think this one is the strongest of all of my LoR's but some applications had me outline which 3 to read....should I email those schools and ask to replace one of the letters with hers? Or should I just let it be? *STRESSING!!!**

It wouldn't hurt to ask. The worst they'll say is no.

Hey everyone! If we’ve requested another letter of recommendation but we’ve already submitted our application and it’s been verified, do we have to update/resend our applications? I see there’s a button on the home page to “Update my application” if we’ve made changes to it, would I do that? I also see the new rec request (as requested but not completed) when I press the drop down menu for my programs on the Status page, I don’t know if that means anything. Thank you for the help!
