VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2026

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone else on the struggle bus trying to figure out how to word your personal statement in a sophisticated manner? 🤣
In one of my essays I talked about pokemon GO! I was waitlisted at that school lol. These essays seem really intimidating but they are open ended. As long as you answer the prompt and your writing is coherent I wouldn't worry too much. Do have your essays proof read though!

Question: if we attend research conferences (I've attended American Association of Animal Scientists, some CE conferences with my Mom, and American Dairy Science Association), what do we list those under (research, animal experience, veterinary experience)?

Also while I'm on the question train.... is anyone else feeling nervous about how to rank their "top 5" experiences? I have a ton of different veterinary experiences in different areas, but I also have non-veterinary and even non-animal related experiences that I think are valuable. How should we approach this?

For what it's worth, I talked almost exclusively about my residence life experience during my interview. My vet med experience had been very generic up to that point, so I didn't have any unique vet med stuff to use.

If you think it's valuable, use it

Can I have some opinions please? I’m currently on 1 waitlist. My plan was to take a couple summer courses to help with my gpa. The school I’m waitlisted for will not give rankings or even answer questions for an idea of your general odds to help you make decisions (I don’t think I’m applying there again). So I’m your opinion, if classes don’t start until the end of June, if I’m not off the waitlist by then, is it safe to assume I’m most likely not getting off that way I can help my applications for c/o 2026 cycle??

IMO I would only list the conferences that you presented at as research. I think it would be good to say you attended other conferences but honestly idk how to report them. Maybe under extra-curricular?

I listed conferences I attended but didn't present at as extra-curriculars and it worked out.

Hi everyone, I am an upcoming senior in college and am applying for vet school this cycle. I am most concerned about writing my personal statement, so if anyone has any tips I would love to here them!

Really stressing out about Pass/Fail grading...I got a C in ochem II lecture and lab this semester and need to use “pass” grading to save my overall & science GPA. but SO many schools aren’t allowing P/F grades for Spring 2021 classes and it’s super frustrating because I was 100% online. This semester was much more difficult with COVID than Spring 2020 semester when everything first started..

So I've been told to enter my coursework exactly as it appears on my official transcript. If my official transcript shows abbreviated course titles (ex. Biol Imp Clmat Chng), do I enter the title abbreviated in VMCAS, or should I enter the full title?

enter my coursework exactly as it appears on my official transcript
You answered your own question 🙂 The instructions say to enter exactly as it's written on the transcript; so that's what you do.

Thanks, just wanted to double check 🙂

If you don't input it exactly how it's written on your transcript, you should still be fine. Don't worry too much. I personally wrote out the full names of classes and was still approved.

Hey y'all so this will be my second application cycle for VMCAS and I'm planning on retaking organic chem 1 this fall at a local university (wanted to take it this summer but my finals week overlapped with the first week and a half of the summer course and I decided the additional stress was not worth it)

I know some vet schools are adamant that prerequisite courses have to be complete prior to submitting your application (so far I only found Mississippi) but I vaguely remember friends of mine mentioning other schools a couple years ago when they applied. I'm not sure if I'm just missing it on the school's prerequisite page but I was curious if y'all knew any other schools like this off the top of your head

maybe TAMU? i think most schools just require a certain percentage of pre-reqs to be done before submission

Also FYI from Mississippi's website
"Although all prerequisites do not have to be completed by the time of application submission, it is highly encouraged." Application & Requirements | Vet Med

I'm not sure, but the only thing I've heard that might be helpful is that even though Cornell allows you to apply with 12 credit hours remaining, I was advised not to apply there while missing a grade for organic chemistry. I'm not sure if that school is on your radar or if it is still a thing, but it was something I experienced. I did find it on their prospective student FAQ, but oddly not in the admissions FAQ, so might be good to check in with them.

can anyone help me brainstorm? Trying to think of what to write for an essay topic about non-academic failures...I'm about 90% sure all my failures have been academic LOL. I can't think of anything that would be non-academic?

You can't think of anything from your veterinary or animal experiences? It doesn't have to be some epic flat-on-your-face failure. I think I wrote about a time a client asked for her dog to have a nail trim with his vaccines and I completely forgot. She called the hospital later that day and I happened to overhear one of the receptionists on the phone with her. Super insignificant but client satisfaction is important, so I got on the phone myself, apologized, and scheduled her a time to come in when I was working. I personally did the nail trim at no charge. Like I said, totally not a huge deal but I was able to show that I took accountability and made it right.

after working 10.5 hours today, I guess my brain just threw working at a vet clinic RIGHT out the window. Thank you! There are definitely things I've failed at work!

Hello!

I am planning to apply to vet school in the next couple of years and I'm trying to currently make a log of my volunteer/work/extracurriculars so I don't lose that info sometime between now and then.
I haven't been able to find a concrete answer - is anyone able to explain what exactly is on the VMCAS application? I looked on their website but I'm still a bit confused about specifics. How many essays are there? What do they have in terms of extracurricular/work experience sections? Also, do all vet schools use that application or do some have their own special one?
Sorry if I seem very uninformed, my school doesn't offer me pre-veterinary advising so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row now. Thanks in advance for any help!

You can create an account with VMCAS and check it out for yourself. You don’t actually pay anything until you submit 🙂

Hi there! I just graduated undergrad and am working on my vet school applications but have a few questions... hopefully some of you can help!

1) For the app, how far back do you include experience/awards/jobs etc? Do I include things from high school (awards, volunteering, jobs, etc)?

2) Also for the app, do you include the hours of experience that you will have even after the application is due? I didn't think so but I spoke with a current CSU vet student and she said "The application only asks for the number of hours completed, so I estimated how much I would have done by the time of matriculation into the fall semester." I will be working full time as a vet assitant during my gap year so I'm not sure what to do.

3) Has anyone fulfilled the microbiology w/lab requirement with an online class? That is the only pre-req I have left to do but would prefer it to be online since I will be working. I have seen some talk of the UCSD extension program, but I'm not sure if you need pre-reqs for that, if vet schools accept that, or what the process is generally. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

4) I've seen a couple lists on here, but generally, what are the schools to apply to with the best chance of getting in OOS?

1) as far back as you can remember, if the experience adds something to your application. If you graduated high school within the last 5 years I’d include all relevant (i.e. academic honours, any vet, animal, and research experience) or major (anything unique, impressive, or with significant hours) experiences. There probably aren’t academic awards or non-vet-non-animal experiences further back than high school that add anything to your application, but if there is something particularly unique or impressive or that adds vet or animal experience, especially if it fills in an area you have little experience - add it! For example, from middle school I included catsitting, raising chickens for a science fair project on behaviour, and vet camp. To reduce clutter, you can try to fold experiences together more the further back you go (e.g. if you did a lot of different volunteering and extracurriculars in scouts/guides you could summarize those in the description of one experience rather than breaking them into multiple experiences. Or if you were on multiple soccer teams in elementary through high school you could have one “soccer” experience). If you have any feeling that an experience might add something, include it. Schools can simply ignore it if they don’t care and the advice I’ve gotten always said they won’t penalize you for including “too much” or “irrelevant” things (within reason, presumably).

2. If it’s an extremely important experience to your application, I’d set the end date to the latest you are able to and know that you will still be doing it, and calculate the hours you know for sure you will have by that end date. This is what I did for my wildlife rehab internship that started 3 weeks before the due date and lasted 5 months, and it worked out for me. As long as you’re clear about what hours you’ve completed and what ones are expected, they can just choose to ignore expected hours if they really don’t care about them.

3. I'm taking it through UCSD extension this summer, I didn't need to provide any pre-reqs to enroll in the course. As far as schools accepting it, most schools are pretty accepting of online courses/labs due to covid, but best to email schools of interest to make sure they'll take that specific class.

4. Most schools have data for # IS/OOS applicants and seats available if you dig around their websites, also applytovetschool.org is a great resource!

Does anybody know the best way to put membership to non-honor related societies and such in the application? I'm a member of the North Carolina Herpetological Society and a member of the Wildlife Rehabilitators of North Carolina and I'm not really sure how to put them in my application. It doesn't fit in neatly as an hours based experience but it also isn't an honor or award...

hey! so i put my wildlife rehab license and wildlife society & rehab council and other professional, similar memberships down as extracurricular activities. for the organizations i put participant, member or student member depending, and then since my wildlife rehab license was through the state listed it as a volunteer with the state department i am licensed through if that makes sense. it worked out for me!

Can schools see what you write on the supplemental applications for different schools?

Hello, everyone!

I'm a veteran and would qualify for in-state tuition at a few schools. Other than the question on VMCAS that asks about my military status, is there anything else I need to do? Do the schools I'm applying to automatically consider me for in-state (ones that consider veterans for in-state tuition), or do I need to submit something? For undergrad in NC, I had to submit information to determine my IS/OOS status to a NC residence determination agency.

Thanks!

I’m a military spouse and for admissions purposes I was considered a non-resident (except the state where I lived & worked). Once I had accepted my seat I contacted the VA office of my school and they walked me through the process of getting in-state tuition. The process may vary school-to-school so I won’t get into the details here, but you’re in the non-resident pool for admissions purposes.

Hi everyone!

This is my first cycle applying. I am trying to confirm my prerequisites for each school, but I think I need to confirm my transcript entry first. I don't want to do that because I'm currently taking an online course through UNE that is supposed to end after the application is due, but I anticipate being done sooner since I can work faster than the 16 week timeline. Should I just submit everything and keep it as an in progress course? Or risk waiting until the end? I know I can't change my classes after I submit.

Thanks and good luck to all!

Eeeeeh depends on how much you think it will raise your GPA and how much wiggle room you have between when you anticipate finishing and the deadline. Remember that you need to allow lots of time for your course to be graded, transcript finalized (I think UNE grades/finalizes as individual people finish the course instead of all after the end date, but check with UNE and your instructor), and the transcripts to be received at VMCAS by September 15 (they say postmarked for Sept 15 but then they also say “received by” Sept 15, so I’d go with the latter to be safe. You might want to ask then for clarification, though). Mail delays would be the worst reason for your application to be thrown out.

Where do you put your professional certifications on the VMCAS?

Example: I'm a certified EMT, after taking a course in college & then seeking out the certification outside of school, but have never worked as an EMT....its not job experience, but I was "awarded" the certification? Where would you put this?

I waited until the last minute to have my transcripts verified and luckily they were, otherwise my application would have been for nothing. It gave me horrible anxiety. Obviously everyone is different in terms of anxiety but IMO don't wait longer than a month before the deadline just in case you have to redo it.

You should be able to list the manager no problem. The point of adding supervisor information is to be able to confirm that you actually did that experience, so it not being a veterinarian doesn't really matter.

Hi all! I know that each school uses different GPAs for their evaluation process (science GPA, prerequisite GPA, last 45 GPA, last 60 GPA, etc.) Do applicants have to calculate these GPAs and report them through the VMCAS, or is that something that VMCAS calculates during the verification process or the individuals schools calculate during their application review? Thanks in advance! 🙂
Vmcas will calculate most of those (besides prereq) during verification but if a school has a cut off and you are worried about meeting it, you need to calculate it yourself and make sure you meet it.
Some schools will calculate their own science and cumulative (if they do grade replacement for repeats) and it’s up to each school to calculate a prereq gpa since they all have different ones.

Is August 15th the recommended deadline for submission of a VMCAS App? I heard someone mention that you should submit by that date in order to guarantee that your application will be verified prior to September 15th, but I can't really find confirmation of this anywhere and definitely not in the AAVMC applicant guide. I was wondering when I should submit in order to ensure that I have time to address any issues prior to September 15th to ensure my application will be considered this cycle. Thanks!

I am trying to figure out what to write on the explanation statement in VMCAS. I do not feel like there is some "explanation" I have to write. I think everything has been explained at the extra questions from the different programs so I would be repeating myself again. Or maybe I do not understand the purpose of it. I have been pretty lucky completing all my studies and growing up financially stable and with my family so I do not know what could I say... thx in advance!

I know KSU recommended submitting it on August 15 through one of their application session presentation, but that's all I've heard.

you dont have to put anything for the explanation statement, although depending where you apply some schools may want you to say something. I know for davis they like when you add something there but its not necessary and you can still get into any school without one

You don’t need to fill it out! That’s only if you need to explain anything to adcoms like a semester/year of low grades and how you will ensure that doesn’t happen again or a gap in your studies (like if you took a year off in undergrad). If you have nothing you need to explain, you don’t need to fill anything out.

The explanation statement is completely optional! Its purpose is essentially if you've experienced any kind of hardships during your academic career, had a semester that you didn't do so well, etc., so that you can explain how that has impacted you

Should we include any online webinars that we attended on our VMCAS application? I am attending a webinar tonight and I was wondering if I should put that anywhere on my VMCAS to show that I am proactively attending educational webinars. If so, where would you recommend that I put it in my application? Thank you in advance! 🙂
No harm in including them! When I applied last year, I lumped together all of the webinars I'd done under one entry under "extracurriculars" and marked it as "volunteer". In the description, I listed off some of the general themes (aquatics, pathology, etc.). I think it's good to show that you're interested in learning outside of the classroom!

August 15th was usually my goal for getting everything submitted, but whether that was an actual suggestion somewhere or one of the "deadlines" I made for myself, who knows

Regardless, it's definitely a good idea to submit sooner rather than later just in case something comes up. I also wouldn't recommend specifically waiting until then to submit. When you get to a point that you feel confident about everything, go ahead and submit so you don't drive yourself crazy re-reading and nitpicking your essays.

Hey there! Did you include a supervisor for the webinar experience in your VMCAS? I feel like it may be a bit difficult to choose 1 supervisor if the webinars were presented by different people! Also, what did you put for the organization name if the webinars were presented through different organizations?
I think I just listed myself as supervisor for that! And I think I put "Online Webinars" as both the experience title and the organization, then in the description I named some of the organizations. I don't think there's a "wrong" way to enter it since it's not really a structured activity, so I doubt anyone would care if you formatted it differently or anything.

I'm starting a job in the necropsy lab of my IS school (undecided if I'm applying there or not bc of certain requirements). I'm wondering what kind of experience this would fall under?
