VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2027

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it ok to say "vet" in our essays instead of "veterinarian" to save on characters or would this look bad?
I would recommend first writing your essay without worrying about the character limit so you can say what you need to say. Then work on editing to get down to the size you need, preferably with someone else giving some input too. If you’re so desperate for characters that you’re writing vet instead of veterinarian, you should probably get some editing advice.

Also, I recommend calculating your GPA for each school’s requirements. For example, Michigan calculated my science GPA much much lower than other schools, so double check how your gpa matches up at each program to avoid surprises!
How do you calculate it?? Is there an online calculator? Do they not just take your GPA from your transcript?

I am a research specialist so I have lab duties, leadership duties, and management duties on top of running assays and research projects. I was given the option to separate out my "research duties" from all the other duties on separate experience entries and also add my publications on different experience entries. This way I would need to give exact dates and the VMCAS guide says to not overlap/repeat hours, so I am not sure how to go about that. Any thoughts? Thank you!

They don’t want you saying you have 300 hours for each when you have 300 hours total if you were to combine the time you did all those jobs. If you did 150 hours running assays/projects of the total 300 hours you’ve spent on things related to the lab, you’d put 150 hours for that section and then however many hours for each other section. They just don’t want you double dipping and inflating your hours by saying you had double the amount of total hours spent on things related to the lab. They want you to try your best and divide it into how much time you actually did each activity/section on your app.

Is there anywhere we would be able to find how many applicants were offered a seat (not how many seats the school has)? I'm looking at where to apply and for OOS, some of these schools have a seat to applicant ratio that is absolutely tiny :cryi:
I'm trying to find data on how many applicants get an offer overall, including those who were waitlisted and eventually pulled, but no luck so far.

The only place I've found this info was school admissions pages on their website. Many, if not most, schools don't publish this info.

Many schools will post this info to varying degrees of specificity. UF has a LOT of info dating several years back, including what you’re looking for. Other schools just post small summaries of the most recent year. If you search “[School Name] vet school application statistics” that’s likely where you’ll find the information you need.

I calculated mine online - I just googled GPA calculator. Some schools do just look at your VMCAS GPA, but some schools will calculate their own - such as either grade replacement vs avg retaken courses, or even calculating totally differently - such as in both of my cycles auburn does not consider b- or b+ as grades, rather they would calculate it as a b, etc.

I'm working on filling in each school's prereqs. Is it better to just the minimum courses to fill the credit requirements or can I choose all courses that fall under that category?

^ I was wondering about this too, would love input if anyone knows!

I would choose the combination of classes that gives you the highest pre req GPA. For example if you got a B in Ochem I and an A in ochem II and the school only required one ochem then you should only choose the ochem II grade to satisfy those credits. I personally had a C+ in calculus that I didnt want in my prereq GPA so I choose my AP calc credit on my transcript and left the calc class out of that part.

Has anyone in the past seen success with admissions meetings? I know that reaching out to schools doesn't guarantee anyone a spot. However, is there a link between reaching out/having meetings and being admitted into a program? I have reached out to 5/9 schools I am applying to and had meetings with them. I feel like that helps me establish a relationship with the school and they might "know my name".

Any thoughts on this? Anyone else had meetings this year or in this past?

No, this does not increase chances of admission. The admission committees across the schools are composed of dozens of individuals, likely divided across different aspects of the application. The person reading your essays is likely not the person going to interview you. And, ultimately, it's up to the dean to extend admissions offers based on recommendations from those that reviewed your application. This would be especially true for those schools with 10+ applications per seat

I am a little confused about the self-reporting of prerequisites for each school. I called VMCAS and they told me to attach everything that meets the requirement. So even if they only want one semester of orgo and you took two, you check both. But it seems not everyone does that - they choose only the courses with the highest GPA and just check those. Does anyone know how the classes we check are actually used? Do the schools calculate your prerequisite GPA based on them or is it just to make sure you satisfy the prerequisites?

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to write their explanation statements? One long narrative or bullet points? I’m worried about it sounding similar to my personal statement!

I agree with Battie. It at least gives you insight on that school’s admission process and how to improve your application but being familiar with admin officer doesn’t affect your application.

My favorite manager at the hospital I work at just announced she's leaving! She went on maternity leave right before the practice was sold to a conglomerate and they basically said her job was adequately absorbed by the other team leads and manager. Wha! Problem is, she's the supervisor contact for that "Experience" and I already submitted to some schools because I was paranoid about the PTE and transcript verification process, so now my experiences are locked...
Anyone have insight into how likely it is that schools actually call past workplaces and need to talk to the supervisor listed? I'm assuming it'll be fine because they'll just be routed to the other manager who would also provide a solid reference/confirm employment, but I just feel dumb for submitting early now -___-

Don’t feel dumb for submitting early. There was no way for you to know about this. The vast majority of schools do not call experiences unless hours look fishy (like if you worked 120 hours a week for 10 years). Are you applying to UGA? Because unless they’ve changed in the past couple years, they’re the only school I’ve heard of who regularly contacts experiences but not even for every applicant. They do this instead of interviewing applicants. They essentially do a phone interview with some of your supervisors instead of interviewing you directly. May have only been LOR references and not just regular experiences but I feel like I remember reading that some people had experiences contacted. If you did apply to UGA, you could try contacting them and explain the situation and forward along better contact info for your old manager (and hopefully they would use it if needed), unless the current manager you think would also be fine for a UGA “interview” (if you make it to that stage) and be able to answer any questions about your time there and your personality/work ethic/etc.

I'm not applying to UGA, so good news there. Glad to hear most schools aren't going to be calling Experiences (it does seem like a crazy time-sink for adcoms but I was feeling paranoid). Thanks for this insight and a bit of reassurance!

Yeah it’s definitely not worth their time to call experiences for every applicant. Most adcoms are also lecturers or have some other job at the university so they don’t have loads of time to burn on calling everyone’s experiences to verify everything. If there’s something fishy sounding, they’ll call. But otherwise, they’re taking your word for it being accurate.

Second time applicant here! I'm a little confused on the transcript aspect of the application. I had the application copy over all of my previous information (experiences, personal info, etc.). If I haven't taken any more coursework since last application, do I need to reorder my transcripts? My transcript info was transferred over to this years application, but I just want to make sure I don't have to reorder official copies. Probably a stupid question, but I would rather be sure lol

Go to the spot that’s something like “check status” and it should say whether your transcripts have been received. They should still be in there and everything should be good! iirc they may even say verified? I can’t remember

Hello everyone!

So I am filling out the parts of the application where you assign each one of your classes to each schools prerequisite. Let’s say it says “humanities and social sciences” and it only requires two classes or 6 credits minimum. Should I just choose two or list ALL classes that would fall under that category?

Thanks!

Back in 2015, I picked the two highest grades that filled that requirement

I just got my summer grades back and an updated transcript. I already sent my transcript about a month ago without this summer grade should I send again?

I submitted to one school already to get my application verified but I have had more recommendation letters submitted since then. It's not the end of the world but ideally, I'd like this first school to see my new letters too. Do schools receive your application as soon as you submit or does VMCAS send it on the deadline (September 15th)? I hope I didn't just make a mistake.

Is VMCAS being really slow for anyone else right now? It was slow for me when I tried entering my grades yesterday and now it won't even let me log in.

Yeah, I couldn't log in this morning either. Probably due to a huge influx of users? I think today is the deadline to request PTE which might be overloading their server.

Ohhhhh that makes sense then. Oh man okay glad im not the only one. I thought it was my laptop!

I have been trying to access the VMCAS website all day and it just keeps loading and loading! Is anyone else having this problem, or is it an issue with my network?

I think so, it started from last night. Same thing happens to my friends too

It's still not working for me! I thought it was my wifi, glad to know it's not just me.

Question for everyone. I am at the point where I am entering all my experiences but I am having trouble with the description portion. Is bullet points or paragraphs recommended? Also what should I be putting in the descriptions?

Do either one just make sure you stay consistent throughout. Most people have recommended to put your tasks/duties and anything you learned from that experience (like “learned client communication skills” etc)

Thanks

I did. If schools don't care about it, they'll ignore it

Can we add experiences after we submit? Because NCSU says don't include any personal pet ownership hours but other schools do want them included. Or is it better to leave those off completely?

I ran into this problem after submitting (and I think after the deadline), and I was not able to add experiences. However, you can always email the schools with a word doc of your experiences you didn’t include, and they may consider it.

Sooo I’m a bit confused. I’m at the point in the application where you match your classes to the prerequisites for each individual school. Let’s say a school has the elective section and it needs a minimum of nine credits, can I choose all the classes I’ve taken that will fill that requirement or just enough to meet the 9 credits? Furthermore, if school only requires organic chemistry 1 with a lab but I took both 1 and 2, should I just put all my organic chemistry classes for that prerequisite (aka my classes for both 1 and 2)? Thanks and good luck everyone!!!

You can do either. Personally, I chose the course(s) with the highest grade that met the requirement in case they utilized the choices for a prerequisite GPA.

In that case, did you guys end up including personal pet ownership hours? Or leave them off since a few places specifically said not to include?

I didn’t include pet ownership.

I didn’t include pet ownership, i felt like it’s a given, if you want to be a veterinarian you should‘ve had some pets.
Be careful - “should’ve” implies that everyone who wants to be a veterinarian must have also been fortunate enough to own pets. Pet ownership is a luxury many cannot afford or their resources are limited/ other circumstances (apartment lifestyle, family with allergies, parents who aren’t supportive, etc.). Some don’t realize their love for vet med until college, and perhaps their college housing won’t allow pets either. Pet ownership should not be taken as a given and those who haven’t owned pets shouldn’t be penalized either.

you are Right, I am sorry, I meant more as most of future veterinarians usually have pets. I was a fortunate one, my parents allowed us to have pets.

I would include pet ownership - conservatively. Schools can always ignore experiences they don't want to include but they can't give you points for things if you don't include them at all.
