VMCVM c/o 2025!

What do we think about the role Casper played in all of this? Like are those that were accepted the ones with the best Casper score? Or do you think they weighted the application portion more heavily?

During an ordinary cycle the application is viewed as a whole - grades, experiences, letters of recommendation, etc - to determine whether or not you are offered an interview. Once you’re invited to interview none of your application matters anymore and admissions decisions are based entirely on interview score. It wouldn’t surprise me if they followed the same format and used the Casper score in place of the interview score but I have no idea if that’s what they actually did 🤔

Yeah I knew that was how the previous process went. It seems kind of crazy to me that they then gave offers off of CASPER scores alone once they chose the extended alternate list that would have usually had interviews...

Email Shelby, I bet she’d tell you if you’re dying to know 🙂

CASPer was 25% of our application

So when my college went to visit back in Feb. (so pre-pandemic), Shelby said they added CASPer as a requirement because they're hoping to use it as a replacement for interviews in the future, but first they wanted to compare CASPer scores to post-interview acceptances to see if it was worthwhile. So with that info, I wouldn't be surprised if they just went ahead and used it as an interview replacement this year. Also, when she spoke with our PVC right after apps were due, she said that their plan was to use CASPer as 25% of the evaluation (as mentioned above), cut down their list to who they would normally interview, and then from there only judge based off of CASPer for acceptances/waitlists. However, it sounded like she wasn't 100% certain of this.

Hello everyone,
Congrats to the individuals who have been accepted. I did not apply this year, but will next year (again). I also have been rejected twice from VMCVM and needed some time to think. Each time I have spoke with Shelby and talked about how to improve my application. Here's to hoping for next year....

I am curious about stats... If you are willing to share please do. I know CASPer is new and I have tons of experience, its my GPAs that are holding me back.

I was an OOS low-GPAer. You can find my stats in the successful applicants c/o 2024 thread. Just search that thread by my username 🙂

Does anyone know how picky VM is about where/how you take the medical terminology course? It seems lots of online courses offer a medical terminology certificate and I'm not sure how that differs from a traditional course on a transcript. The VMCVM requirements list says "can be completed online or at any accredited college or university" but with that "or" in there, doesn't seem to specify to what level of accreditation would be required for an online course.

Online as long as it is from an accredited college or university! I did mine online at my school, McDaniel College. Community College courses are fine too!

Congrats to everyone who was accepted! For anyone who has been accepted/is an alternate and who did not take medical terminology at their undergrad institution, are there any recommended online courses that meet Virginia-Maryland's requirement? Thanks in advance!
Doane University has an online Med Term that they accept

Hi everyone! Quick question - for those who are on the waitlist, have you sent any updates to VMCVM? I just re-read over my waitlist letter and saw that it says, "In addition, please provide any facts that might alter your status as an alternate." What exactly does "alter" mean??

Someone reached out awhile ago. See below.

I received a response asking about the statement: "In addition, please provide any facts that might alter your status as an alternate."

Response: “ This statement is more for if you want to be removed from the alternate list and to make sure we have the most up to date contact information for you.”

I sent some updates, such as transcripts, but I don’t think it will actually do anything. It’s really a shame that they won’t tell us until April what numbers we are- at least then we would know if there’s hope or not 🙁

Got waitlisted as an OOS applicant. I know it varies in terms of when they will be pulling in people from the waitlist- it just sucks that we have to wait so long to even ask what our rank is!
I know right!? I'm OOS alternate too and April feels soooo far away 😭

Hi, i'm also an OOS alternate for 2025.. How many OOS alternates do you think there are? I just paid my tuition for the medical terminology course today and I hated every second of it considering i may not even get offered a seat in the end. hard pills to swallow..

I feel that 😢 - I have no idea how many alternate spots were offered. I'm going to wait until April-ish and depending on what happens I'll pay for a self-paced Med Term course then and get it done before graduation!

StraighterLine seems like the way to go!

Does anyone know if Virginia Maryland is doing fully online or are they back to in person classes?

We're hybrid.
We were only fully online for about 6 weeks last spring when everything got completely shut down statewide (late March to early May)

Large classes allow students on an opt-in/opt-out basis in combo with Zoom (maybe rotating schedules for the 1st and 2nd years... @EngrSC ?)
Some classes are small enough to allow everyone to come in person
Some instructors have opted to be fully online for lecture regardless of the class size

All lectures are available virtually for students who can't or don't want to attend in person
I think they are all synchronous over Zoom, but there may be some lecture capture... idk for classes I'm not in
(ETA jk I forgot some instructors are pre-recording lectures.)

Labs that involve live animals, cadavers, or can't reasonably done at home are still in person
Labs that can be reasonably be done at home are virtual

Clinics are in person

I’m a first year and like @britzen said above, we’re hybrid. Most of our lectures are via zoom, though some professors opt to allow 1/4 of the class to attend in person. Some labs have been online (clin path, epidemiology) but most have been in person (anatomy, bacteriology, animal handling, etc). For in-person labs we’re broken down into sections so only 1/4 of the class is in lab at a given time. And we work exclusively in pods of 4 for all labs and are socially distanced with the rest of our classmates.

I personally love Zoom lectures. I feel it’s more efficient and productive for me but I know some of my classmates feel differently 🙂

For 2nd years this semester we can email our course leader if we are interested in going to class in-person, we had a rotation going last semester but it was pretty inconsistent/not many people were showing up so we're trying a different approach. We were told that if enough people are interested it might go back to some kind of rotating schedule.

We have a combo of live zoom and pre-recorded lectures, they've been leaving that up to each professor to pick whichever they prefer. The professors that are doing pre-recorded lectures usually have some kind of zoom "office hours" set up so we can ask questions in real time if we want to.

Hi ! Im an IS-MD acceptance! Wanted to tell people that are planning on attending that we have a facebook group If you are interested in joining, just called vmcvm class of 2025!

It looks like Shelby has been posting them so far, so try contacting her about posting your ad.

Just wanted to send some love to everyone on the waitlist who's also anxiously waiting for April 1st  We are all so worthy and so capable no matter what! Proud of you!!
Yes yes yes sending my love to you all!! I was waitlisted the first two years I applied, I know it's tough but it's not the end of the world. You should all be proud of yourselves for making it here!! (heck I don't know you and I'm proud of you for trying) Hang in there!!

I wish we could all get in! I’m happy I at least got this far! All my other schools have been a bummer 😢
Me too 😭 I know it's not the end of the world if I have to reapply but, VMCVM is the last school I'm waiting to hear back from so I'm truly praying to hear good news come April. But like @PetVet23 said above, we should be so proud for making it this far!! 🥳

Are there any IS people out there who plan on declining their acceptance offer? Just curious if there were any at all who may not choose to take their IS seat.

I got denied from the two other schools I applied to, so I’m anxiously waiting for this waitlist to come out... although I can’t say I’m feeling confident 😅😅
It's not over till it's over! Let's keep our fingers crossed and our hopes high!

Normally a handful of IS students decline

To my understanding they usually call 0-2 seats off the WV waitlist, 2-4 off of the VA waitlist, and 4-6 seats off the MD waitlist.

Highly dependent on the year though - last year I heard they got to 12 on the MD waitlist and 8 on the VA waitlist.

Does anyone know of a university offering medical terminoloy during the first 6 weeks of summer? Or another way to get credit for it without having to commit to the spring semester course?

I took it online at Camden County College in New Jersey - granted I’m an NJ resident, but I think it would still be minimally expensive even OOS. I spoke with VMCVM last year about it & they said it was acceptable, and it was a pretty good class. I took it in the fall but I’m like 99% sure they offer it accelerated for 6 weeks in summer.

Usually vet schools don't accept classes done the summer immediately before matriculation so I would double check (idk your acceptance status so forgive me if you aren't matriculating in 2021). My local community college (Anne Arundel Community College) had an online course from mid June to the beginning of August. They may offer more at different times in the year though.

Transcripts need to be sent to VMCVM by like June 30th.

Talk to admissions if you want to take a class that won't let you meet the transcript deadline to make sure it's okay. Otherwise look for an asynchronous class that you can finish on time.

Quick question - how likely is it to hear back from VMCVM if we're off the waitlist before April? Or does the WL usually start moving until then?

Mostly moves the day after the deadline. But I guess there is always a chance before then.

A lot of people sit on their acceptances until the deadline because they are waiting to hear back from other schools or are still deciding between two offers. Or, probably more commonly, just forget to take themselves off the accepted list so don't get taken off until the deadline passes.

It's possible to get called earlier if people decline and open up spots, but most movement occurs after the deadline because that's when most of the declines become apparent.

Does anyone know if once we know our spot on the waitlist, we can see how much it’s moving? Or would we have to keep asking for updated waitlist positions?

You’ll have to keep asking, but they will quickly respond. Trust me, last year I asked probably 10 times over that month.
