Hey guys, anyone know if we need to send updated transcripts from fall if we're on the waitlist? If so, should we send them directly to the admissions office?

^ Do we need to send transcripts? I know if we get off the waitlist we'll need to send them, but would sending them right now help/hurt us? (I didn't get the best grades last semester, unfortunately) 🙁

I'd save your money unless you are offered a seat, and even then I'd wait to send in your transcript until you are done with Spring semester (assuming you are still finishing prereqs). That way you only have to pay to send a transcript one time.

I don't believe sending updated transcripts would impact your position on the waitlist in any way, but you can contact admissions to confirm and to see if a recalculated GPA could potentially move you up a little if you had a strong Fall semester.

In previous years sending in Fall transcripts would have had zero impact on your chances based on the way they did ranking after interviews. I sort of doubt they'd recalculate application scores at this point, but it's a new application process so I can't say for sure.

Has anyone requested a file review session and received a response? I sent an email Monday morning and haven't heard anything back. They're probably being flooded with emails, but I'm still worried my email was missed!

I sent mine right on Feb 1st and havent heard back yet either.

Okay, just got an email today from Shelby in response to the email I sent on the 1st! Based on what she sent, it sounds like they got a ton of requests! Not surprising at all.

Is VMCVM hosting any information sessions? I havent got a single email.
They sent an email on 1/29 with all of the info for the info sessions. The first session was this past Wednesday, and they'll be holding additional ones every Wed. through 3/10. Contact Shelby for the link.

Ok thanks, I guess they don't give people on the waitlist links to the information sessions?

Hmm idk. I would think they would, but I guess that's a question for Shelby. I was able to go to info sessions at another school while on the waitlist.

Yeah I already emailed her. I've been doing info sessions at other schools I'm waitlisted at as well.

I emailed Shelby this morning and they aren’t currently offering information sessions to those on the alternate list :/ she said they’ll be doing some for those applying in the current cycle that we can attend but doesn’t have any dates yet. Kinda annoying but I guess I understand...

@CyroCap there are a few of us current students around if you have any specific questions about VMCVM 🙂
Yes! Thank you for the offer. I know some wildlife vets have come out of VMCVM, and I know there's a wildlife elective, but what other opportunities are there for people interested in wildlife? Does the school have connections to zoos/aquariums/wildlife rehabilitators? Also, is there hands on experience during the first year?

Other people might have more thorough answers since those aren't my primary interest areas, but:

You can do wild life triage through a student club. There's a good relationship with the wildlife center of Virginia. If you are inclined, there are occasional opportunities with the state wildlife vets (cwd sampling, rotations) in both VA and MD - both vets have come and done talks, guest lectures, and/or wet labs since I've been here.

There's a decent connection with the zoo in Baltimore and a more recent relationship with the zoo/aquarium in Greensboro. I've done tours and shadowing at both and hands on stuff in Greensboro. Vets from the Smithsonian have come to do events also.

Not really my jam for either, but the people in my class who are interested in that sort of thing have been able to find plenty of opportunities.

Live animal labs start the first week of school if that's what you mean by hands on experience. The labs are interspersed throughout the core curriculum the first two years - there won't be a semester where you don't spend at least some time with live animals in lab the first two years.

Also not a wildlife person so I'm honestly not sure about what opportunities are available there.

But yes, we are hands on with animals first semester of first year! We have a beagle colony and as first years we are assigned to walk them once/week and we do preventative care labs with them (i.e. we begin learning the basic wellness exam). This year has been a little unusual in that the beagles were all adopted out in November due to our extended winter break, but in an ordinary year they stay with us all of first year and are adopted out at the end of 1st year. We've also had a couple "labs" working with horses and cattle. This semester we have a couple "labs" with horses and sheep. There are also opportunities outside of the formal curriculum - lamb watch, mare palpations, etc. just depending on what clubs you're part of.

Anyone else on the Alternate list that has casually started looking at housing?
I’m a MD IS alternate (rejected last year so yay for progress). I work full time as an ambulatory equine technician currently and we spend 6 months in FL (November through May ish depending on clients) and then we head north to CT/NY for the summer months. The thing is I move with my fiancée two cats and a dog as well as my mare and weanling. I don’t want to be caught completely with my pants down should I hopefully get the much awaited call, but I also don’t want to sign a 6-month lease up north in the hopes of getting the call lol.

good luck to all the alternates! I know we’re all anxiously waiting for April 1

Nope, I did that a bit last year when I was on the alternate and don’t want to get my hopes up again. Last year it moved 12 places, but usually it’s only 5-6. It’s a shame they won’t just give us our placements now so we know for sure if there is even a possibility.

I'm in a very similar position. OOS Alternate. Will be moving with my fiance, two dogs, and a 32-year-old gelding! Anxious about getting a "last min" call as well. I wish we could know our placement sooner.

Good Luck!

Worse case, there are many hotels near the school. So if you have to spend a few weeks in a hotel before securing housing that is possible too. I know most of the nice apartments booked full by mid February last year.

Hi everyone, quick question - I'm currently on the waitlist for VMCVM, and I know that if we were to get in then we'd need to submit our transcript to the school. Do y'all know if a few poor recent grades would be a reason for the school to reject a student after getting in? I haven't failed any classes, but I do have multiple C's that I've received within the last 2 quarters. I won't make a bunch of excuses for this - it's just been difficult lately and my grades have taken a major hit. I'm hoping for a chance to get into VMCVM, but I'm terrified that my grades might mess it up for me. 🙁

Nope, it has no influence. You just need to pass with a C or better.

Does anyone know how much the IS waitlist moves?
It varies from year to year, the first time I was waitlisted I think I moved 2 spots (though I was pretty far down the list so I didn't keep checking), and my second time I moved 3 or 4 spots

Is anyone emailing tomorrow or waiting until April 1st? I'm just sooo anxious lol

I’m waiting till the 1st. Fairly certain they won’t respond if I ask today.
As someone who tried reaching out a day early the first time I was waitlisted, I can confirm that when they say April 1, they mean April 1 and you either won't hear back until tomorrow or you'll get a reply asking you to wait until tomorrow. I know it's tough and nerve-wracking, but hang in there!!!
