VMRCVM Applicants c/o 2017

Has anybody here applied to & been invited to interview for the DVM PHD program? I applied for it but my app still shows as under review so I assume I am on the interview wait list. I was accepted to CSU but I am also very interested in VMRCVM!! I am in NJ so there is no IS for me 🙁

I received an email invite on Monday (Jan 14). They have scheduled me to interview the same day as my vet interview. Those invites went out the first week of January.

Has anyone been called off of the interview alternate list?

Not yet. One of the vets I worked with recommended waiting 2 weeks before calling for a status. I may break down and call them on Monday.

I would call this week or at the latest Monday. Interviews are a week from Friday. They don't accept interview alternates for admission, there is a separate post interview alternate list.

So does anyone know how long it may take them to tell us the decision after the interview?

Last year it was a week between interview and decisions. Selection based on MMI relies on only addition of scores from each scenario, so it doesn't take long.

FYI interview alternates: it's not my interview, obviously, but I just heard that someone is turning down an OOS interview. Someone's going to get a call soon!!!

so on the facebook page, they've said they are interviewing 85 from va and 180 out of state, which is 265 total and the email said they are interviewing 288 total. 😕 that leaves 23 interview from md? that's not right.... 😕
there were 67 interviewed for class of 2016: http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/acad/dvm/docs/stats.pdf

what am i not getting right here...?

Maybe they are counting MD as OOS, plus West Virgina has contract seats, 6 I think in my class. So they're interviewing W Virginians too, not mentioned in the above figures.

yeah, west virginia isn't include in those numbers (specifically noted). i just don't think md would count as out of state, since it's, well, not.

who knows.

Oh neat, I hadn't seen our class stats yet. =)

Maybe the 203 (288-85) includes everyone; MD, WV, and OOS? I dunno why they wouldn't list their joint in-state and contract state as OOS, buuuut who knows.

Does anybody know what happens with weather related issues that impact getting to the interviews? The forecast doesn't look good for Friday or Saturday...

Does anyone know if you are standing or seated once you get into the various MMI rooms?

Hi guys! In case you're not connected on Facebook (or if you are and haven't seen the updates) there are a few people who have rooms available in Blacksburg if you need a place to stay for the interviews. I have one at my place, and there are a few other people who have posted as well. We can't make new posts on the DVM Candidates for the Class of 2017 homepage, but we have added our information under one of the old posts.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! We look forward to getting to see everyone this weekend!

Not to freak you out, but Roanoke airport was shut down for fog last time I tried to fly out. The area is prone to bad weather and VT isn't prone to canceling classes, so I'm guessing that applies to the interviews also. I would make sure to have a contingency plan. The nature of MMI doesn't really allow for make up interviews or late arrivals, unfortunately.

Good luck to y'all this week! I'm one of those with a spare room, PM me if you need a place to crash. I also have a 4 wheel drive SUV, so I can drive in inclement weather 🙄

looks like rejections are going out to people who didn't get interviews today...already got mine.

Sorry guys! 🙁 I hope you all have other schools you are interested in and hear good news soon.

I'm so sorry to everyone who got rejections! I really hope you have good news coming your way soon! 🙁

Does anyone know how soon VMRCVM will send out acceptances/wait-list/rejection emails after our interviews this Friday and Saturday? I know last year it was a week after, but their interviews were also in March.

I would imagine it would be rarher close to the same 1-2 weeks again sonce all they have to do is add up scores from each of the mini interviews.

Spoke with Joyce thid am. She said expected timeline is beginning of March to hear back.

Sucks because it would be nice to know before I spent another $400 bucks on a OOS interview :::::sigh:::::

That's my same predicament! I have an interview in February and it'd be great to know before then! Oh well, guess we will all have to be super patient!!

Exactly. I am so grateful/excited for my interview at UF but would LOVE to not have to spend the money since I know for tuition purposes I would be going to VMRCVM (my IS) if accepted to both. Oh well...a nice excuse to spend a few days in sunny florida. Ill worry about my credit card bill later. 😀

That sucks! It always seems like your IS school is the last to let you know. I won't hear anything from my IS until March (Georgia).

Yeah, same here, TAMU sends out in March as well. At least I could drive to K-state. Flight to Virginia was not cheap 😱

I guess in the end it's for a good cause though, so oh well.

Did she mention why it's going to take so much longer this time since it only took about a week last time?

Just going off my own thoughts and not in any way what Joyce has said, but since we have to let schools know by April 15, if the interview was in March, the interviewees don't have much time to get VMRCVM's decision and let schools know their final choice. With ours in late January, VMRCVM has so much more time to sit there and decide who they officially want to let in rather than having such a time crunch to give out final decisions. Just a thought though!

I'm pretty sure though that admissions are based only on interviews ("Admission offers are based on interview results." from http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/acad/dvm/req.asp) and from what I've heard, MMI has a score for each room and they add those up. I don't think there's a lot of sitting and deciding at this point, from what I understand, but I could obviously be wrong. I'm sure they just wait to make sure they have all their ducks in a row and everything is good and ready before they send anything out. And maybe waiting for fall transcript review also?

And I am so glad that I can drive to Blacksburg. Kind of a pain in the butt to get to by plane, especially cost-wise, I imagine.

I'm driving in from NY! Also super thankful about the drive... I know I would be having a panic attack with the poor weather if I had to fly 😱 Where is everybody staying, hotel wise?

Last year when I interviewed, they said once you get the interview, all other aspects aren't considered anymore. You basically passed that stage. Final decisions are based solely on the interviews. And yes, each room does give you a score, and your scores are added up and that's how decisions are made. It could be possible that as they go down the list of top scores and get to the people that just made the cutoff, that there are a lot of students with similar or the same scores and they might want to really considered all of them rather than arbitrarily cut the list in the middle of people who made say 65 points. That's just my best guess though.

Yeah. No direct flights from here and then the closest airport is still ~40 miles from Blacksburg. Let's just say the airfare was more than a couple hundred and it's my most expensive interview by far

My connecting flight is in Charlotte, so I'm hoping if the weather is bad that worst case I could at least make it there, and then it's a 3 hour drive about.

One of the reasons they're waiting a little longer may be because other schools don't finish their interviews/make offers until a little later. In the past there have been concerns that students (specifically out of state students) had to make their decision about whether or not they wanted to attend VMRCVM before other schools told them whether or not they had gotten in. In order to take some of the pressure off of students who may have several acceptances, they decided to push back the acceptance letter date so they can complete their interviews and consider any other offers as well.

It's been a year or two until we talked about it, but my guess would be this is why they're pushing things back a little. When I got accepted we definitely had our acceptance letters a week after interviews!

Good luck all!

Just to reinforce what CHW posted earlier - Interviews WILL NOT be cancelled for bad weather - got this from an email from the recruitment department today. Like CHW said, have some sort of backup plan if your travel plans get mixed up. I got extremely lucky last year and interviewed on Friday instead of Saturday (my flight into Roanoke on Thursday was delayed, my flight out of Roanoke on Saturday was cancelled, and I was coming from California!).

Looking forward to meeting some of you at the dinners tomorrow and Friday. Good luck this week and don't get :scared:, just be 😎.

Very much looking forward to meeting those of you coming in. =) I'll be hanging out in VMIA as often as I can tomorrow and Saturday to get to know you guys and answer any questions you may have.

One further caution - we are expected to get some crappy weather this weekend (didn't I tell you? If you have an interview it's gonna rain - unless it's January, and then it snows), so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get in to town and out again.

Last weekend's snow knocked out my power - hopefully that won't be an issue this weekend. 😉 (Tho' if it is, campus has its own power plant soooo interviews will probably be fine)

Just wanted to wish everyone luck in their interviews tomorrow and Saturday! Just be yourselves, relax, and embrace the process. Take the time to explore Blacksburg (despite the weather) and get to know the town you very well may be living in for the next 4 years!!! On the day I interviewed, it was snowing like crazy...hopefully a good omen for all of you as well. I never thought they would accept me, but they did (as an out-of-stater). So just stay positive and extrude good vibes. Best of luck!!!

I just met some excellent candidates at the dinner tonight - it was a lot of fun and I hope you had your questions answered. I know my table had a lot to talk about - we didn't get our food until the staff was starting to put it up! I hope you all had/have a positive experience!

If you're interviewing tomorrow, best of luck!
If you're just getting into town and doing the dinner tomorrow, relax - its very casual and fun!

Did anybody who got a rejection go back to their applicant page on VMRCVM? What does it say for the decision? Does it have another table underneath it that says "Current Program"?

In Blacksburg! 🙂 Had a great time at the dinner! It was really helpful, and it made me feel better about the interview tomorrow.

Yup. I see the table that says Current Program. It goes on to list a bunch of stuff that looks like I got in... even though I was rejected. I have no clue what that table means. I guess it's just reiterating what our applications were for?

Ooh. I wish they wouldn't do it that way. I was hoping they just made a mistake when they sent me the rejection :,(

We survived interviews! Congratulations everybody!
