Washington State University c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think there would be too many financial implications for canceling fall semester. Other smaller universities are having problems already with not having enough income due to people asking for tuition reimbursements and losses from sporting tickets.
If they do put it online, most of the professors at least will have had experience with the online format.
Anatomy for first years is probably what people would be most worried about. We are in our second semester of anatomy and it is going just fine in the online format. So, I wouldn't stress about what if classes are online.. it won't be bad

Hey Everyone, Not sure if this is the place to post this. I am waitlisted for the c/o 2024. I am an IS WA resident. I know yesterday was "Decision Day." I didn't know if anyone here has heard of any offers to those on the waitlist yet today, particularly IS. I know it is only 9:18 right now, but my heart is in my throat and I am anxious as all get out. Any info would be helpful.

Yo this isn't an answer to your question but just wanna say I've been in your shoes before (IS waitlisted) and it sucks.
I didn't get in that year and have to say in a way it was a blessing? Because it ended up being an amazing gap year.
It would've been great to get in, and I hope you get in, but do your best to appreciate all that you have in your life right now because once you're here in Pullman in school all that's gonna be gone

I do know of at least one of my classmates who was pulled off the waitlist so it is possible and will cross my fingers for you

Thank you! This is my 3rd year applying, 2nd as an IS. My grades are my issue and I know it. I took this year to do an MS in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at Lincoln Memorial University. I appreciate your sympathies and thoughts.

Hey there I wanted to let you know that WSUCVM sent out an email today (4/22/2020) that said the following "The national acceptance deadline for admission offers of April 15th has come and gone, and the incoming first year class has now been finalized. We want to welcome you all to the WIMU Class of 2024." There is possible movement if someone else dropped after decision day because they got off a wait list somewhere else, but they seem to think the class is finalized.

I am so sorry if you didn't get in this year. I didn't get in last year so I totally understand the disappointment if that was your result. The last year of working just a regular job and not having to study has been really refreshing and I think ultimately a good thing to have had a break before starting vet school this august. Hang in there. Best wishes going forward.

I got the call and was accepted off of the in state waitlist today!! 🙂

Were you the in-state Washington waitlist or a different WIMU in-state?
Congratulations! I'm hoping for mine to come soon.

For those accepted for the Pullman campus, have you guys all found housing yet? I can't tell if I am behind in finding a place or too early and not a lot of ads are out yet for roommates and rooms for rent. I have been looking through the housing packet but there does not seem to be a lot of options. Does anyone know if more options for "a room to rent w/ roommates" type ads come later in the summer or after the spring semester or is now the prime time for when most of these ads are already posted?

Pullman leases start in May, typically. Therefore, many people have their housing arranged already. If I were you, I would post on the classifieds or your class page and check if anyone is looking for a place. Then, you could sign a new lease rather than joining one.

Had a conference call with deans and other administrators etc. I would plan on coming to Pullman for August for those of you on the fence about moving. Things might be modified, but their goal is to have as many things in person as they possibly can. However, go in knowing that a hybrid approach is a real possibility. Alot is still up in the air, but wanted to pass on what their plans are as of right now.

Do any current students have recommendations on how they like to stay up-to-date on local news and happenings? I follow news sites on FB/Twitter back home and want to do something similar for Pullman/surrounding area while preparing to move. It would be nice to know COVID-related restrictions or regulations when heading up there.

KHQ&KREM are the local news stations out of Spokane/Lewiston
There's also Pullman-Moscow daily news &Pullman radio news on FB

Our county has only had 16 cases last I knew. There's not really any special restrictions here other than what is being applied state wide. If you are living in Moscow then I would look at but they're more lax.

ID has pretty set dates of evaluation of when things are evaluated and move from one stage to another. WA not so much-it's a more iffy timeline of 3ish weeks.

Does anyone know if there is a specific laptop we are required to get for WSU? Or can we use any type we want?

You can use any type you would like!
Due to the likely hybrid nature of classes this Fall, I'd recommend one with a webcam for live interactions, but if you wouldn't want to show your face on zoom, don't worry about it

Thanks!! 🙂

We also use exemplify in year 3 and they're hoping to expand its use to earlier years. I'll get you a link to the website later after my final but they're pretty basic requirements

Like coffee said it's not required as there are computers at the school to take them on, but personally I'd highly recommend your computer meet these standards because some of the school desktops are less than optimal. Plus if you have to be gone for some reason they can still administer the test remotely if it's an option for your situation-or like the situation we are experiencing currently.

Also second the webcam option because we did telehealth to help make up our communications course and it was a bit awkward if someone didnt have one.

Awesome, I'll definitely be getting a webcam with it!
Do you guys typically take notes in class with a laptop/tablet you can write on? Or pencil and paper? I've always done pencil and paper, but have heard that's not as easy in vet school.
Thanks for all of the advice and help!! 🙂

Through out undergrad I was a pen and paper gal. But once vet school started I switched to taking notes on my tablet. It’s really nice to be able to annotate on the slide. And to print all of them out would be beyond my budget.

It really just depends on your style. For me it varies by class. For example radiology isn't really possible to do hand notes unless you printed the ppt. I did sys path all on computer because the note packet is massive with tons of blanks. This semester I took notes strictly by hand with the ppt up on my computer-but like I'm just copying the ppt to hand written form. I do know people who do 100% only computer or only pen and paper. Some people get together and do bulk prints for things like anatomy lg animal book and sys path notes that gets released as one chunk. Other classes sometimes only upload ppts like 10 min before they get to class. My general suggestion is stick to what you know as long as it's working for you!

Echoing above, it's going to be your own preference. I take notes strictly on the computer because

1. I can't write fast enough
2. I think it is extremely helpful to be able to use the search function on the computer

However, if you're watching lectures at home you can slow them down or pause to catch up, so 1 becomes less of a problem. One of my best friends uses hand written notes most of the time.

Thanks for all of the info! I think I'll wait on getting a new laptop then until I test out taking notes on one, and make sure that it's going to work for me. 🙂

Question for current or incoming WSU CVM students, can someone help explain the financial aid aspect of the federal loans that are offered. I was fortunate that I did not need to take out any student loans for my undergraduate but now that I am seeing the financial aid that I have been offered I am confused on what the best options are, how to accept, when to accept, or if anyone has any advice/tips on how to navigate the options. It looks like for my financial aid most of my tuition and costs can be covered by a "grad/prof unsubsidized DL" and a small remaining amount by the "Grad PLUS direct loan." Could someone explain these two options as well as if there are other options that I should consider for student loans, when I should accept my financial aid (the scholarship app is due this week and they said scholarships will be awarded mid-July so should I wait to accept my loans until after these are awarded in the chance that I am offered a scholarship), is it better to reduce the amount and estimate how much I will need rather than accept the full amount, how does interest and repayment work, etc? Thank you in advance!

Are you an in-store student? I can tell you that I use the cost of the unsubsidized DL and took the PLUS loan, but ended up with excess funds at the end of the semester. If you live like a student, you shouldn't need the Plus loan.

Yes, I am in-state. So do most vet students pay for tuition and costs using the unsubsidized loan if taking out student loans? I was not sure if there were other options out there specific to vet school that are better in terms of repayment

There are private loans that you can get specific to medical careers and the grace period is generous but please note that these are not available for loan forgiveness

Coffee covered everything pretty well. All professional federal loans are going to be unsubsidized unless you happen to get some Health Profession Loan money that is subsidized but not anywhere near enough to pay for tuition and costs and are hit and miss if you receive it or not even after submitting parental info to FASFA. As a general rule best<worst: unsubsidized DL<Grad Plus<private. Interest rates are amazing this upcoming year so take advantage if you need to. You can always return money basically until the end of the semester if needed (I'm not 100% sure on the time to return loans) @SkiOtter knows?

Personally I never took out any plus loans, and often didn't even take out the full amount of my direct loans. It's really going to depend on your spending habits and if you work during the summer and save money for expenses. Both my summers I worked full time and saved most of my income to help pay for the next school year. For fourth year I just took out the full amount of direct loans and was fine. But aside from living alone and caring for my pets, I lived pretty frugally so it was very doable for me. I had other friends that took out the full amount of loans available each semester and would work and still run out of money. It really varies by person.

You can return money up to like 60 days into the semester I think? And can also adjust your amount to take out for the next semester if you have left over from fall and don't need all of spring loans. Or if you don't take it all out you can also request to take out more any time during the school year up to the amount offered to you.

I'd probably over estimate how much you need for first year to make sure you're covered if you don't want to have to go talk to financial aid and take out more during the semester if needed.

Also, if you're given a scholarship they reduce the amount of loan you're taking out by how much the scholarship is worth so your total aid says the same so you don't need to wait if you don't want to.

I would not take out private loans. Better interest rates sure, but a lot of them require you to be repaying during school and you don't have options for deferment or forgiveness like with government loans.

That makes sense and thank you all for the responses, this helps a ton! So for taking out the direct loans, is there generally a deadline to do this and how is the money dispersed? Does the money just get sent to the school and then a check is sent you for the remaining amount that is left over after tuition and fees?

You can definitely wait until right before the school year starts to take them out, dispersal might just end up a little delayed if it's like a week or less before school starts. Yes, the loans go to the school first and then you get a "refund" of what is left after paying tuition or fees. It can come as a check or via direct deposit. Definitely sign up for direct deposit. I always got my refund within two days of my loans being dispersed. Checks can take a while.

couple questions and I might post these on the FB group as well but does anyone know what vaccine requirements there are for WSU CVM first years besides having our measles immunization? Also for VM 586, I am super confused on the materials that are required and what is needed to be purchased for this class. There was a document posted on our internal class page but I am having a hard time understanding what is necessary and what is recommended. I have attached the file for reference

Just measles or whatever is required by main university. No rabies.
At work on phone so not sure which class is 586 if anatomy you need the book, scrubs you dont care about, closed toed shoes you dont care about and dissection kit for fall.

it is principles of surgery and it includes supplies like suture kits and suture pads as well as other surgical instruments. Is the dissection kit we use in anatomy the same one we can use for this course as well or are they different?

It looks like you will have an Ethicon kit which is honestly all that you need. You can actually get suture for free in the CSC so I don't believe you should need to buy your own suture. The instruments in the Ethicon kit are a bit stiff, but we worked with some poor quality instruments in class because there were not many high quality ones. The high quality ones were German or Colombian vs the low quality Pakistan instruments.

For suturing, you need a needle driver (Mayo Hegar), thumb forceps (Adson Brown), and scissors. The Ethicon kit comes with two needle drivers, Adson Brown, and blunt-blunt scissors.
For ligations in this class, a curved Kelly or mosquito is also needed. Carmalts would be ideal for practicing neuters, but we had none of these available and just practiced with Kellys.

You don't need a dissection kit/scalpel, at least we didn't.

I would contact Lethea or Dr. Cary if you are still unsure. This is what I think you'll need based on my experience last year, but we did not have our class online.

Personally wouldnt use my dissection kit on principal of sx stuff but I know the anatamists are doing alot of the dissections before hand this semester. However like coffee I'm also unsure how it's going to go with stuff online so pry best to ask letha or dr. Cary. My class didnt have to purchase anything for that class unless you wanted to practice on your own at home.

So it sounds like between the Ethicon kit we will get from the school and my dissection kit (that should include Kelly curved hemostatic forceps, rat tooth thumb forceps, probe, scalpel handle, (3) #11 blades, dissecting scissors) I should be set or do I need to purchase a separate curved Kelly that is not used in my dissection kit? I will double check this with the instructors as well but I wanted to make sure I understood correctly here first

The kit does not come with kellys.
But, they are not necessary if you are able to practice within the CSC.

Question(s): I have known I'm attending WSU CVM for a total of 7 days, so I am a little behind... Therefore, I have a couple questions:
1. Regarding books, I see they list the requirements as the most recent editions. Do I need to get the newest edition books, or would I be okay to pay $10 for some of them by buying the first editions?

2. This book buy list shows two lab coats (a short consultation coat and a long lab coat). What is anyone's recommendation on purchasing additional coats besides the one they give us for white coat ceremony?

3. They list sanitizable footwear; does that mean tennis shoes, or does that mean rubber boots?

4. How many of the materials listed under "recommended" do you recommend I get?

5. Am I required to purchase these materials through the SCAVMA store, or can I find them on other websites? (the deadline to place orders was July 12 or get charged a $25 late fee, so I'm trying to avoid that.)

I will probably have more questions as I get further into this process... TIA!!!

Will let newer students answer the first question but when I was a first year new editions weren't required. Theres also a google drive with most the books and/or accessible through the wsu library.

2. I bought 1 lab coat for protecting my arms for lg animal anatomy but definitely dont think its "required" during lecture years. 4th year though may be a different story but things keep changing so tbd.

3. Ie closed toed shoes you dont care about going into the foot bath. You will need muck type boots at some point.

4. I'll let someone who's more in the know answer for your year.

5.nope!

1. For our class, the only required book was dissection of the dog, and both 7th and 8th edition were used. Any other book listed as required... don't recall if there were... only purchase if you are really a text book person.

2. I didn't purchase any other coat. Got coveralls for large animal anatomy.

3. see mixy's answer

4. what's recommended??

5. buy from anywhere
