Any suggestions from current students on how to find/secure a rental from across the country? I looked at the most recent housing packet and half of those listings were supposed to have been removed per owner when I contacted them.

I’d stay away from DRA, but Apartment Rentals Inc and Dabco are good places to rent from. The rental packet will be updated pretty soon as current 4th years start listing their places to rent.

I rented from Apartment Rentals all over the phone/online and had no issues, and same with people I know who went Dabco. DRA has some okay units but are basically slum lords so stay far away.

Thank you! Good to know which companies to avoid!

Yeah I arranged through DABCO long distance. They're ok. You can message me if you have more questions about them. Wendimere is pretty good as that's who my friend rents through. Theres also summit realty, remax, and one other I cant think of at the moment. I think I've heard at least 1 bad story from each company so just do your due diligence as a renter-pictures before you move anything in etc. Yes stay away from DRA. Also there will be students looking for roommates as well so if you're down with that it can be a good way to find a place. As caiter mentioned I dont think anyone has started putting new ads in yet. The person who sent out the ad just took it over so I'm not sure they're 100% up to speed on it.

Renters need to have their leases renewed usually by February or March so once that passes then all the rental companies will know what they have available for the upcoming year. Housing does go fast so dont wait til june or July to start looking or you might end up in a less than ideal situation.

If students are eligible to live in ID I always recommend looking there first as you can usually get more for your money but you will have to drive between the two and buy a parking pass-though they recently started up a bus between the two but I dont have specifics on its schedule.

I’ve heard nothing but bad from DRA so another no vote there from me. I personally rented from remax for 3 months, it was a horror show! I don’t recommend them but others have been fine with them. I also rented from apartment Rentals for 3 years in undergrad. They were good. Older units but they always contacted me back about issues and got them fixed. I can’t say that about remax.

I recommend looking on Craigslist and Zillow for starts. I know some students once accepted post on the school page and have other students go check the place out for them. That has worked for several people.

Looking for some travel advice, I'd appreciate any and all tips!!

I'll be coming from Seattle and initially planned to drive to WSU, but I'm very paranoid about I-90 closures now. I'm used to the rain-- the snow is just a whole other thing.

Do you think successfully driving up to WSU on the 21st would be likely? I'm looking at plane options as an alternative, but I heard they get diverted from Pullman in snowy conditions as well. 🙁

@CoffeeQuestionMark might be able to best answer this for ways to get to Pullman from the west side.
They recently redid the airport from last winter to decrease weather cancellations, so far I've been told there have been less cancellations at least due to the fog, snow has yet to be tested.

I did not have problems driving to Pullman for my interview, but it is near impossible to predict. Worst comes to worst I guess you could take US-2?
When I have been in the pass during snow, have found it not to be too bad. Even in the snow during the night. I also don't use chains or AWD.
However, there are certainly times especially during high traffic when the pass can be bad, it's just more rare than you would think.
I'm thinking if weather was a preventative factor, they'd be able to re-arrange something for you... if the weather is that bad, even flights won't be able to land on time.

Thank you for the reassurance!! I did not think the most stressful part of this process for me would be physically making it to the interview. I guess I'll just have to check the wsdot reports like a mad woman closer to my interview date and plan from there.

Anyone have advice on the best time to show up? For instance: They mention you can sit in on classes but they don’t give any schedule. I know there’s a tour and 12 and 4 - I have a 2:45 interview and I’m also not sure how long it’s supposed to take, would I be able to catch the 4 pm or should I plan on the 12?

There are classes every hour on the 10 and they run until 12 (lunch hour). There might be another one at 1:10.
If you have a 2:45 interview, you can definitely catch the 4 PM tour.

For everyone wondering lecture schedules, 3rd years usually have class 8-12pm M-F in Wegner G50. 2nd years is usually 8-12pm except T(8am only) in Bustad 145. Then 2nd&3rd years have labs in the afternoon which aren't great to sit in on-usually require special attire. limited seating, etc. Year 1 they have some labs in the morning but their classroom is ADBF 1002. Come join us, I promise we don't bite...well most of us anyway 😉

I highly recommend going into the skills lab if it fits your schedule. I also recommend going to the student mixer if you have questions. A-free food, it's only pizza but still free, B-you can ask questions and get lots of people's views on them.

I don't know if this is a dumb question but what are some good questions to ask if given the opportunity to at the end?

OOS first time interview invite! 🙂

I don't recall having any time to ask questions. For any interview, you may want to ask things about program structure. What is the grading system like? Do you get your tests back? What is 4th year like? How many surgeries do you get to perform in the curriculum? Just some that I personally would be curious about for any school now that I've experienced it first hand

I have a padfolio that I bring in to interviews. There’s a folder part where I can keep my transcript looking nice and a legal pad for me to write down the names of the interviewers (for thank yous). It looks professional and I got it for <$20 on Amazon. I prefer to leave my phone in my car.

What are you bringing into your interview besides your transcripts?
I didnt have time to ask questions for my interviewers-they have lots of people to get through and sometimes end up running behind. Since it's usually a very conversational interview questions are usually saved for the q&a with students or stacey and KT.

Coffee's suggestions are great though incase you do get extra time!

As far as bringing things you'll give your transcript to the people in the front when you sign your NDA etc. They dont ask you for anything in your interview so probably the less you bring the better tbh.

The interview packet I had received in the mail a few months ago said to bring all unofficial transcripts (including grades for fall 2019) to the interview 🙂
Even for students who have already graduated?

Thanks! I didn’t receive an interview packet. Are you OOS or IS?

That's a good question! I would just in case or call and ask? I'm not 100% sure. 😳 I'll be bringing mine because even though I graduated in 2017, I was still missing biochem as a prereq and took it fall 2019.

I think last year I didnt need it but brought them anyways just in case.

Is there a place to put backpacks/bags when you go to the interview? My hotel check out time is extremely close to the time my interview is supposed to end (12pm and 11:45am respectively) so unless the hotel lets me do a later check out I'd have to bring my backpack with me. I just dont wanna look weird or anything for having it with me 😳

They are super good about letting you put bags places/having the students watch it for you! They did for me last year

For a different interview, I brought a whole duffel bag and just left it with the students/coat room because I had to check out too. I'm sure they'll understand and someone would be willing to keep an eye out for your stuff.

Congrats!!

What time did you and @LG012 get your call? Also, do you think the admissions will be calling today because of the holiday?
I interviewed in Logan last Wednesday and am getting a little freaked about no calls yet. 🙁

I interviewed near the end of last Tuesday and got the call from Dr. Talcott on Friday around 6pm Utah time.

Considering the interviews seemed to be in alphabetical order by last name, they may be calling in the same order? My last name starts with an H if that helps.

Also, I spoke to Stacey in the waiting room before my interview. My conversation with her and some of the student ambassadors made it sound like it would take at least a week for decisions, but they were working hard to finish all deliberations in under two weeks. I absolutely did not expect to get a call so soon, and I suspect they still have plenty to make.

With that said, deep breaths. It's the holiday, it hasn't even been a week, and you're a great candidate. I know it's gut wrenching, but you got this. 🙂

Thank you! I appreciate the support!
I also wonder if the really strong/obvious candidates like you and @LG012 got calls first.
Fingers crossed! Definitely need to remember to breathe.

YES, they ask for them when you check in and they give them to the people who interview you to look at.

I second this. They verified that I had them during check-in. I was asked to bring them in for the interview as well. It was similar for the other half-dozen applicants I saw come through regardless of if they were still completing their degree or not.

I know I'm late to the party but no calls today to anyone so hopefully you feel better about that aspect Campus is closed.

Dr. Talcott did say most people would hear within 2 weeks after interviews finished the 15th for the Logan campus!
