WesternU c/o 2027 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
quick question, why people keep sending the transcript to them but the committee does not request for? Aren't we just supposed to wait for further notice? Or is there any notification asking you to submit the transcript, which I did not receive ? I asked this question probably a month ago but never really get the answer. Is there an advantage by sending the transcript without the notice?
Hello! I’m happy to help! 😄 the committee does not request the transcripts as they assume the applicant will upload transcripts to reflect any new grades. There is no notification that is sent to applicants, but once your grades for a given semester are released, that would be the time you may request official transcripts to be sent to the university AND upload your unofficial transcripts to the portal. The advantage of sending them immediately is to support your application in any way (e.g., GPA calculation meeting prerequisite requirement). I hope that makes sense! Let me know how else I can help 🤓

Thank you for the answer. However, on their website, it mentions that the fall coursework in process at time of the application is not considered until the candidate is offered the seat. It means the transcripts you send will not support the application and increase your chance to get in. That is the reason I confused why people sent their transcripts without the notification. I know we will eventually send the transcript if we are accepted anyway.

Oops! Sorry I must have missed that!

My friend just got a rejection! Sooo not really sure how the timeline works now 😂

On my portal it had X in red next to the classes I was taking in fall of 2022 and I sent my transcripts in and now they’re green . I have one red X and it’s for bachelors degree but I believe they do ask for your fall transcripts .

So I got a call from someone from the university telling me to call back and where to send my transcripts but I call and call and nobody answers. There’s also no answering machine to leave a message or just hangs up. So I’m confused.

I also just received a rejection. Well, see y’all in 2 years when I complete my masters degree lol 😂

i’m sorry! i finished my masters this fall hoping for a leg up. had you interviewed?
No interview! But last year I was interviewed and waitlisted. Just proves how different each cycle is and you never know what could happen. A masters is a great plan B. Where are you doing yours?

i graduated from my same undergrad institution in december with my masters!

In previous cycles, if you received a rejection without an interview, did you normally hear back later?

Yeah so last year I was rejected without an interview and I heard same day that everyone was accepted
Oh okay, that is strange than this cycle. I wonder if this year people who are accepted/waitlisted are going to hear back in March and those who are rejected are going to hear sooner..

Hey forum! A friend of mine and I were discussing how much vet schools put emphasis on undergraduate course load taken per semester and/or quarter and if that is a significant factor when deciding who is offered an interview. A while ago I was told from a counselor that western does not favor a higher course load, but rather, good grades/strong GPAs.

Can anyone offer insight or opinions on this topic? I would love to hear some feedback ☺️

What if you sent the official transcripts to VMCAS and they said they were processed and verified already? Do you still have to upload unofficial ones to Western’s portal?

I don’t really know how the committee of Western U look at the application but I think in general they want to see if you can successfully handle heavy course load in the vet school, and I think good grade is one of the important factor to decide if you would receive the interview. For myself, I had 12-17 credits per semester with straight As and also volunteer in the same time. I interviewed in early November which I believe it was the first round of the interview? Anyway, I assume committee like to see good academic performance with affordable course load instead of seeing applicants not doing well with heavy course load. It is just my opinion based on my personal experience.

The school look at your transcript in your application sent from VMCAS. You don’t need to do anything unless they request. What we discussed was the later transcript after VMCAS application like Fall semester and coming spring semester, not the one you submitted on VMCAS.

Hi! I don’t really know how they choose this, but I would think they take it into consideration. I had on average 14-16 credit semesters my last 2.5 years of undergrad and I also worked full time during this period (night shifts at my ER vet, had to pay for my apartment somehow!) and my GPA is not the strongest — it is definitely on the lower side overall due to some failing grades during my first year at a different university. I was offered an interview 11/8, so take that however you want. Seems like there’s really no discernible answer here, but again, who really knows how they do stuff!

Hello, and thank you for sharing your story!! Wow, you did night shift and went to school?? What a trooper 😎

I received an interview invite on Sunday! I went to schedule the date but there is only one available and I am working all day. Has this happened to anyone else? Do I contact the admissions or wait for other days to open up?
I would try to get off work. I’m sure your boss will understand this is your future. I would not postpone an interview for a job.

I just wana pop in and add that unlike the others, i didnt overload myself on credits every semester. I honestly took the bare minimum to be a full time student, but I did pretty well on the classes i took. I have a semester credit from working in a research lab assisting graduate students with their projects. I was able to do this through my Ornithology professor at the time. He also wrote a letter of rec for me! I also had 3 vet letters of rec on my application if that matters. I worked on and off at different places throughout college, and some vet volunteer hours.

Forgot the most important part! I did my interview in November. So im not too sure how grade heavy western actually is

Lol it’s been a minute since I’ve been on here but I’m not sure if there is an actual answer to how/who WesternU decides who gets the first round of interviews. I mean, there must be some kind of formula to it, but based on the answers, I’m not sure if there’s one standout thing that I’m seeing.

I was also offered an interview during the first round of interviews this cycle. I spent my summer retaking two classes and bringing up my GPA but with regards to my undergrad, I was fully loaded each semester starting the second semester of my sophomore year. I worked (32-50 hours) and studied full time (always took 4 classes or 16 units per semester since I double majored), was involved in undergraduate research for most of my undergrad career (including my senior thesis), took on many leadership positions in one of my clubs (committee chairs, a research program coordinator, big little coordinator and founder, president), and was also active in my sorority. With that being said, my grades weren’t the best and even with the retakes, my GPA is still on the lower side but I also had extremely exceptional circumstances due to family issues.

This is in comparison to my friend who was also offered a first round interview. There are a lot of differences though. Unlike me, she didn’t work full time but focused only on school. I think she took 3-4 classes each quarter and wasn’t too involved in extracurricular or research. She got great grades and did well in school.

So I can’t say that I see one outstanding factor from all of our experiences, though I could definitely be missing something. It does seem to me though that based on these answers that WesternU is truly one of the most holistic veterinary schools out there (which I personally love to see) and considered everything. Correct me if I’m wrong though!

Is anyone else not from Cali that applied here? I’m all the way from Indiana and this is my only school i’m waiting to hear back from so if things work out i’ll be moving so far away from home 😭
I’m from Texas 😭 and am crossing my fingers to get in here because I’ve been rejected every where else except SGU. I really want to stay in the states though !

I am from Illinois! My only options left are WesternU and UGA

I appreciate your story too!! Thank you, it’s nice to read different perspectives on how we all approached school! You’re a rockstar!

Hello again 😃 nice to see you in the forum. I have to agree with you, they seem not to be too strict on course load as long as you did very well and maintained good marks. They certainly are the most holistic! Being that I was waitlisted last year and denied this year, I am hoping that the masters degree helps me land a seat in a few years 🥹

I see that we are all well-rounded, that’s the trend that’s obvious

Forum, who here did a masters degree and what kind (e.g., biology, public health)? Thanks in advance

I did! I completed a MS Thesis Program in Poultry Science! I didn't have to follow very strict coursework guidelines so I got to take many cool courses and even an epidemiology course at my university's vet school.
I LOVED my graduate school experience, it was the best 2 years. If you want to chat more I'm happy to share my experience and why it's been so valuable to me!

Not a masters but I did a one-year post-bac at CSU! I liked it as I had complete control over what classes I took and it boosted my undergrad cumulative in addition to my science and last 45 since it was still considered undergrad classes. CSU also had a wider range of courses than my undergrad did so I wasn't just retaking classes and made a schedule similar to a vet school one (immunology, pharmacology, histology, nutrition, etc.) I didn't think my GPA was competitive enough to enter a Master's program so I went that route.
