Really want to go to CSPM or Western

Your cGPA is a bit low for both schools, but within range of their matriculants. Your sGPA is above average for both schools and your MCAT is close to their averages. Apply early and you may have a a good chance of getting an II from either school.

Just wondering my chances
cGPA: 2.9
sGPA: 2.5
5000 plus hours working in direct patient care.
30 hours POD shadowing
MCAT: 511
President of many clubs
over 3000 volunteering hours.
Lost my dad soph year of college. Had a hard time adjusting. But not using it as an excuse. just trying to build taking some extra science classes now to show i am serious.

I'd say do a postbacc or SMP. As it stands, that MCAT is great, but your GPAs would be worrisome I believe

Your MCAT will get you into big schools. If you are not picky, you will get in somewhere.

Change your avatar pic if that's you.

You will be asked about the low sci GPA; otherwise, with a 511 you would be fine.

I’m sorry for your loss. Nobody is going to blame you for struggling with the loss of your dad. It’s not going to come across as an excuse, so make sure you at least mention it in your personal statement to help them understand why your GPA is so low.

Thanks I did, I think that I framed it as more of an overcoming tragedy issue and show how I pushed through. Im going to apply this cycle and see what happens. I thought about doing a post bac then applying next cycle. but im torn...

I didn't realize this before but sorry for your loss 🙁

With the 511, I am positive you will get in somewhere. Apply broadly and prepare well for the interviews.

WAMC?

Will be heading into my senior year but I am not planning to apply until summer of 2020 (want to take a gap year to travel or go to grad program). I'm interested in podiatry due to the variety and personal exposure to the terrible outcomes due to diabetes and amputations (BKA, AKA). Very interested in potential research opportunities and pursuing a dual degree in MPH/MHA or other program depending on the school.

Stats: cGPA 3.82, sGPA 3.7ish, MCAT 508
Major/School: Flagship state university; Nutrition Science, Gerontology, Honors (liberal arts degree thing)
Research: 1 semester in nutrition research lab (mostly helping out senior student); 1 semester in food allergy epidemiology/public health with poster presentation; will be pursuing research my whole senior year either continuing food allergy stuff or public health research pending funding approval.
Work Experience: 1500+ hours CNA at a hospital/care center; Resident Advisor for 3 semesters; Internship at hospital for 1 summer; Internship with univresity office of health advancement this upcoming year; Sports nutrition internship with D1 athletics department this upcoming year
Extracurricular/Volunteering: Multiple leadership experiences including fraternity positions, advisory boards including being co-chair of the student health advisory committee, public policy leadership conference and course at Harvard, treasure for pre-health honorary society, long term mentor for an individual with disabilities, adaptive skiing program, volunteer with the local Alzheimer's Association, helped start a food pantry on campus, and volunteer with soup-kitchen type establishment
Shadowing: Two pods 50ish hours (will continue to shadow); other shadowing includes multiple family practice MD's, radiologist, pediatrician, hospitalist, dentist, optometrist, and have lots of exposure to PAs and NPs through work
Hobbies: Skiing, hiking, kayaking, cooking, playing guitar, soccer, running, and watching documentaries

you’re good for any school. will likely get scholarships. good work

Great stats. You can do a DPM/Ph.D. at Scholl or DPM/MPH at NYCPM (the MPH is through Mount Sinai NY).

Does anyone know if Kent State’s POD program is full? I have an interview there next Monday and I feel that my best chances are being waitlisted given that the program starts in about a month and it seems very last minute for getting selected. I’m new to applying to POD schools, and just want some other opinions on if they would accept someone this late in the year?

Thanks!

Hello, all,
Some guidance would be helpful.
I have a total undergrad cGPA of 3.17 (or 3.08 if you exclude hours taken at a community college)
undergrad sGPA of 3.14 (3.02 without community college classes)
I also went to a very challenging Medical Science masters program and ultimately had to change my major to Biological sciences due to a C and a D in Med phys 1 and II, they were worth 6 and 5 hours respectively so it really hurt and ultimately led to a total graduate GPA of 2.75.
The primary redeeming factor would be my MCAT score at 517 (127, 131, 129, 130).
I also have about 3,600 hours as an EMT
Shadowing: about 70 hours of an MD and 8 hours of a DPM so far.
Any thoughts on my weird bizarre situation would be greatly appreciated!

with a 517, you're golden for Pod. Are you sure you want to do this and not DO (some of the schools take high MCAT and low gpa apps)?
Was the masters an SMP that you got 2.75 GPA from?

Thank you for the response. I guess I just have a hard time picturing even a DO program overlooking my GPA (no upward trend, no real extenuating circumstances), but I suppose I'll ask on their forums. Being 100% honest, PA school would still be my top choice, but they will refuse to even look at my MCAT out of sheer pettiness. Thanks again for your time!

I am 100% in the same boat. I posted earlier last week with pretty much same stats as yours. I would love to get into an MD/DO program but I'm not confident on my stats. I'm also pretty optimistic about a possible podiatric career. Right now, I'm going to apply early to Pod schools and if I get accepted, I'll pay the deposit. If It turns out that I get an MD/DO acceptance down the road... well, I'll cross that bridge when it comes

Your GPAs are too low for PA schools so that probably won't work. You should def ask this ques in the premed forum (md/do).
The only way you can get into a DO school at this point will be to do another SMP but killing it. But don't forget, all GPAs and MCAT tries are taken into considerations so def work out the math to see if its worth to do another smp..of course this sucks financially.

Though, you will get in a pod school (due to the mcat).

I got a 490 on my MCAT and my overall
GPA is 3.3 and science is a 3.0.. do I have a chance to get into podiatry?

Hey guys, I’m just looking for advice and guidance!

cGPA:2.97
sGPA:2.79
MCAT:512
Extra: 500+ hrs shadowing doctors and podiatrists, 6 months as a medical assistant, leaders of some clubs in college

(Low GPA because my mom got breast cancer and I was constantly driving back home to be with her rather than studying on the weekends)

I just graduated but I’m taking 3 classes at my local community college (immunology, pathology, and retaking organic chem 2). If I do well in my classes and apply around early February, should I have a chance?

And if my chances seem unattainable, any advice on what I should continue to do? Thank you!

Sorry to hear about your mom.

Your MCAT score is superb, and with the gpas, your chances are very good. Apply in Feb (if not earlier), write a good personal statement and prepare well for the interviews. Good luck.

Hi, so I wanted to know what chance I have at being accepted at podiatry school. I'm in graduate school right now, getting my masters in health sciences and taking mainly hard science classes. I know my undergraduate GPA isn't great,so I decided to pursue a masters degree to show I can handle advance classes and that I improved myself.

I calculated my total GPA including my undergrad and current grad GPA, 3.14 (undergrad cgpa 2.9, grad cgpa 3.38).

I calculated my science GPA which includes both undergrad and grad GPA, 2.96 (undergrad sgpa 2.925, grad sgpa 3.3).

My MCAT is 491 and I am planning on retaking it if my practice tests are above 500+. I have shadowed many physicians and currently have 10 hours with podiatrists (plan on shadowing more). I have tons of volunteer expereince as well (clinical and nonclinical). I was planning on applying this upcoming cycle, but if my chances aren't ok, then I might consider applying next cycle.
I also wanted to know that if I plan on applying for this upcoming cycle, should I wait till my fall semester grades are in? I'm taking only science classes that would contribute to my science GPA. I just don't want to be late. I know my stats are low. Also, my #1 school would be Temple, but I open to all other schools too. I have read the stats from the AACPM website, but I just wanted other opinions as well. Thanks.

GPA is within Temple range but that MCAT is a bit low. If you can at least score a 495 and apply early I think you'll have a shot!

Thanks!! As for other schools, how are my chances?
Lastly, I just started shadowing 2 podiatrist (5hrs each), I want to shadow them more but I don’t think I’ll be able to get enough hrs where I’m comfortable asking them for a LOR by early August. So should I wait to apply because I won’t have that LOR on the first day of application? I’m assuming by early/end of September, I’ll probably have full application including the LORs, so that’s not too late right?

September is still very early. You actually do not need LORs to get IIs from schools, unless it is Scholl. Podiatrists know that an LOR is needed to apply. so you can let them know right now that you need an LOR by the end of your shadowing experience.

Thanks!! I couldn’t find anything about secondaries in AACPM booklet. Is that the supplemental application?

Oh ok gotcha. I thought that IIs meant secondary applications. Thanks!

If you apply to Barry's program, on the day of your interview they'll have you fill out a one page form with some questions about you/ your experiences while you're waiting to be interviewed by faculty.

If you do a quick search of the pre-pod forums and interview feedback section you'll be able to get an idea about the questions they ask 🙂

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to reassure myself that I'm not heading down the wrong path.

cGPA: 3.107
sGPA: 2.87
MCAT: Haven't taken it yet but projections are ~500

EC's include:
4 years of NCAA D2 Football
Fraternity philanthropy chair and then VP
Currently on a gap year as a medical scribe
Working on shadowing a podiatrist, will likely have upwards of 40 hours by time of application
Completed a short undergrad research project by developing a qRT-PCR assay

I'd appreciate any feedback, thanks for the help!

SciGPA is low and a lot depends on your MCAT score but if you score a 500, you will be fine.
Use all the AAMC materials and do the FLs (as many as possible) before the real thing.

Hey everyone,
I was hoping you guys could give me an idea of my chances, particularly at Western, Samuel Merritt, DMU and Scholl. I know my scores aren't the greatest but pls bare with me

cGPA: 3.2
sGPA: 3.0
MCAT: 493

I was wondering mainly if I should retake the MCAT since many of practices tests were much closer to 500. I was hoping to apply early in the cycle which is why I'm hesitant to retake, but if is worth then I will obviously try again. Also, I'm usually not the best test taker so I'm worried that I still won't do much better if I retake 🙁 I should note that I'm currently in my gap year right now and I'm taking an extra one or two upper division biology classes this coming fall at my state school. I'm already enrolled to take these classes but do you think this is necessary? I just wanted to prove I can handle more difficult science classes since my sGPA is on the lower end.

Please let me know what you guys think, it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Im just another person wanting to know their chances for podiatry schools.

210+ credits
overallGPA: 2.75 (undergrad was rough)
sciGPA: 3.04
MCAT: 496

Found out Im better at science classes compared to my undergrad major so my last 60+ credits is ~3.6 (made up of post bac and smp all science)

Im planning to retake the MCAT because I think it's the main thing holding me back and Im honestly getting tired of taking more classes. Ive accepted the fact that I need to try to convince admissions that I'm academically capable.

If you can bring your MCAT to 500+ then you're chances are a bit better than rn.
You should still apply rn tho with the current stat and see how it goes...maybe an adcom might see your last 60 credits worth more. Gl

Hello everyone!

I'm interested in Podiatry and wanted to know where I'd stand if I applied. I really want to go to either Temple or NYCPM.

I did poorly in undergrad(having to work a lot due to family issues and just straight up being a dumb college kid) so my GPA was a 2.7 but I did an SMP at Rowan graduate school of biomedical sciences and maintained a 3.7 GPA. My only problem is that my mcat score is a 491(pretty low) and I just retook it yesterday so hopefully its higher than that.
My ECs are 50 hours of DO shadowing, 3 months of volunteering and 4 years of working in a hospital and by the time I'd have my application in I would have started working in the ER and possibly scribing as well. Volunteering with the Red Cross and was part of the hurricane Sandy relief squad. Was on the board of two separate premedical societies in undergrad as well.

If I was to apply now with my 491 mcat, what are my chances of getting into either NYCPM or Temple?

Your 3.7 at Rowan makes up the low undergrad GPA, so you're fine there. Wait for the new score then apply to both, but imo you probably have a shot at NYCPM January program with your current stat. I can't say the same for Temple because they like high MCAT scores (hopefully someone from Temple can chime in).

It seems like you were trying for the DO program so make sure Pod is what you want to do; shadow a few ppl in this field before jumping ship. GL!

Would there be any issues for NYCPM with my 491 mcat? Are they more lenient with that since my GPA is higher?
Yes I was previously trying to go into their DO program but I've done a lot of research and feel like I'd be happier with podiatry since I've always wanted to do surgery but also have a good work/home schedule. I'm actually contacting some pods now that I would be able to shadow in my area.
