Debating if I should apply so late. Mostly interested in the schools in Ohio, Iowa, & Arizona. Have a 496 MCAT, 3.4 cGPA, &3.8 sGPA. 200 shadowing hours by shadowing a DO &MD. Able to get a LOR from a podiatrist.
It is still March. Since application pool is not that large, AACPMAS and schools can process apps within 1-5 days. You can apply.

Hi guys!

So here is my situation. I have been admitted to pharmacy school and I start late in August. I am really considering switching to podiatry. If I apply now, I would not have to mention anything about pharmacy in my application. However, if I apply when the application first opens for the next cycle early August , I would have to talk about switching from pharmacy school and also provide a resume for that semester. I'm afraid it is late to apply now, and I don't want to risk leaving the pharmacy program. However, would it hurt my application next cycle when if I mention that I'm transferring from a health program? What should I do?

- 3.3 GPA, 2.85 sGPA, great letter of recommendations, volunteering, and research.
Update!

So I have received an interview invitation and scheduled it for April...since I'm not taking the MCAT until May what do you guys think would happen if the interview goes well? Would there be possibly a conditional acceptance based on the MCAT score? Or I would not hear back from the school until the score is released?
Also where's the thread for the interviews feedback?
Thanks!

Some schools give conditional acceptances before your score and others will wait for your score before making any decision.

I think it depends on the school. For temple, I was told you don't get a decision until the score comes back. I heard on here that Kent gives you a conditional acceptance based on reaching some score. (Forgot the exact number, but I'm sure it is easily searchable)

Do u happen to know which schools do?
I think Kent is the only one that sends you a conditional acceptance email, but I remember both Western and CSPM telling me I was in as long as my MCAT was just acceptable. Temple waits until your score is in. I applied late, so I did not apply to DMU/AZPOD and cancelled interviews at Scholl, Barry, and NYCPM, so I am unsure about those.

Hey guys, cGPA 3.05 sGPA 3.35
Haven’t taken the MCAT yet, shadowed a podiatrist over 100 hours, D1 basketball player. Would like to know what you all think my chances are!

So Im current applying SMP's to eventually go DO, but really curious at what my chances for Pods would be if end up not getting in:

Around 2.9 cGPA and sGPA
FL resident
500 MCAT
100+ hours of shadowing physicians (could get some podiatrist shadowing in)
Worked as emergency room scribe
Worked like 5 years of retail throughout school
Decent but not great extracurricular

Stats are fine. Shadow and apply early! In case you wanted to, you still have a chance to start this year..if you submit everything asap.

Hanna be kind of tough to get into a SMP with a sub 3.0 GPA. It might be better to do a post bacc, Ace it, then apply for SMPs.

Pod should be fine at bigger schools, that MCAT will save you.

I need to shadow a podiatrist still, however, what would be my chances for podiatry?

cGPA: 3.92 sGPA: 3.88

MCAT: 519

Race: White, Female

Undergrad: State university

Clinical Experience: Roughly 650

Research: None

Shadowing: Around 15 hours shadowing internal medicine physician

Nonclinical Experience: Roughly 400 hours

Also.. I did attend a CC for the first two years of undergrad.

no chance, mcat and gpas are too low 🙄

Why are you looking into podiatry and not MD/DO?

I found out that the work life balance is not the best for an MD/DO and much better in podiatry.

Podiatry has the potential to have a better work/life balance than MD/DO, but there are many cases where DPMs work just as many, if not, more hours than their counterparts. But, the option is there if you want it.

I apologize if this is not the right place, but I have a friend looking into Podiatry who will be taking the MCAT in May but may not apply for another year or two. What is the oldest accepted MCAT score Podiatry schools will take?

I have some questions related to the application process for those of you that applied this year! Did you submit the recommended amount of letters of rec? I believe a some schools just ask for one (like Scholl) but some ask for three. Should I still only submit one to the schools that ask for one, even if I have other recs available to submit? Also, those of you that did research, did it factor into your science gpa? My research is for credit and is registered as "Medicine 699". Thanks! (p.s. sorry this isn't me asking what my chances are)

I don’t think it really matters as long as you meet the minimum number and necessary letters. I still submitted a letter to AZPOD, even though they don’t require any. Submitting extra letters will not hurt you, unless your writer discussed red flags.

Thanks! I might as well just ask.
I'm a junior at a big 10 university and a biology major.
My cgpa is about a 3.4 and sgpa is about a 3.2 (a C and B- in gen chem freshman year are bringing me down 🙁 and 9 credits of medicine research helping)
will have 2-3 letters of rec.
I'm on a dance team, volunteered at a local non profit dental clinic, volunteered with habitat for humanity, have done 3 semesters and a summer of research in a dermatology lab, have shadowed two podiatrists, worked at a wedding planning company, volunteered at a bone marrow drive, have my CNA certification and have 50 clinical hours from that, and helped start another dance team on campus. I am going to study full time for the mcat this summer. I was originally going to do a july 10 date, but am feeling the pressure due to my lack of really being able to get much into content review so far, so i will be studying full time this summer and probably taking an august mcat. I'm hoping with full time studying for that much time, I am aiming for a 500 atleast. I really would love to attend Scholl as it is near my hometown. What are my chances for the next cycle? Should i submit my apps still in august, even though i wont get my mcat score until september?

Make sure that apply early next year, kill your MCAT, you'd stand a pretty good chance! You should be able to get the DPM letter and hopefully one for your medicine research. At my Scholl interview they said that if they couldn't verify your MCAT you could get an interview, and that until verified they'd put you on hold, but if you wouldn't get in regardless then they would reject, but your stats seems good regardless, as long as you don't bomb your MCAT

Don’t worry about the C and B- in gen chem. I got a D in bio1 and have a 3.0 sgpa. Do good on the MCAT and you’ll definitely get some love!

Hello, I am wondering what you think my chances are? I know my MCAT score is a little low but I am hoping my GPA may be able to set that off a little bit.
cGPA: 3.92
sGPA: 3.88
MCAT: 490
40+ hours shadowing DPM

Your GPA will balance out your MCAT nicely. You will most likely get some IIs and maybe some scholarship offers too. Good luck!

Just another “what are my chances” post! I would love to hear everyone’s opinion and advice!
Exercise Physiology Major
cGPA:3.1//sGPA:2.88 (low because my first 2 years my mom got breast cancer and other family problems that affected things; past 40 hrs have been good! Still have about 22 credit hours left for my undergrad)
MCAT:507
Other Stuff: Mission Trips, 50+ hrs pod shadowing, 100+ hrs of other doctor shadowing, volunteering at hospital and nursing home, volunteering at homeless shelter, Leader at University’s Student Catholic Community, great LOR from teachers and doctors

The reason why I want to do podiatry is because my father has diabetes and I personally see his deteriorating health involving his lower limbs. So hopefully my genuine interest and passion for this field looks good too!

(p.s. any recommendations of good post bac/SMP programs I can get in to as a back up plan too?)

Thanks in advanced!!

Should be fine, no need to plan for a post-bac.

507 is gonna get you into any Pod school you want.

Does volunteering at a orthopedic clinic help towards getting into pod school? or does the volunteer hours specifically have to be in a podiatry clinic? I have an opportunity to volunteer at a orthopedic clinic and wanted to know if it will help me get in.

Podiatry school applicants do not necessarily need to get their clinical volunteering experiences at a podiatry related clinic. As long as you are exposed to patients and have some kind of influence in their care, it will help your application. I volunteered at a primary care free clinic and it came up on some interviews, so an orthopedic clinic will be just fine.

Checking in again for a friend of mine:

2.8 sGPA
3.2 cGPA
Physiology major, minor in a foreign language -- still have 1 year remaining (expected graduation in Spring 2020)
Will be taking the MCAT in May, just took AAMC FL1 and scored 504, so I expect at least that if not higher come May

Med school was the first option, but considering their GPA they are looking at other clinical options that are more accepting of a lower GPA and podiatry fits the bill. They have a family member who is a Podiatrist who speaks warmly of the profession.

I advised them to do the following, but I'm wondering if I have the wrong idea:
Work hard senior year to improve GPA
Apply low tier MD, DO summer of 2020 for matriculation in Fall 2021
Depending on how that cycle goes, apply Podiatry in Fall 2020 for matriculation in Fall 2021

I've been doing reading and I know there's a stigma against students who are using Podiatry as a backup, but I think my friend sees it more as an alternative that is able to look past their struggles in his undergrad (OChem and Genetics grade keeping them down -- plans to retake Genetics in Fall 2019). Just based off what I know of the person, succeeding in med school/podiatry school is possible -- I think their low GPA has more to do with inability to identify successful studying strategies rather than lack of inherent ability. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I do not know of any MD/DO (low tier or not) that would take those stats. Just being honest.

For DPM programs, they will get in, but may not stay in if they do not fix their studying strategies.

I hope your friend realizes the curriculum is equivalent to a medical school curriculum.

You gave them sound advice, but I believe they would be wasting their money applying to MD/DO programs thinking they will get an acceptance with a 2.8 sGPA.

Edit: Most people I have seen take FLs usually score lower on the actual exam. Tell them not to get comfortable. There are no guarantees.

Thanks for the reply.

My thought is that their senior year will be mostly upper level biology/chemistry courses so assuming they are able to increase their GPA by 1-2 points, medical school might still be on the table, particularly if they do well on their MCAT. However, I agree with you that it's a stretch. Also agreed on both their study habits and MCAT. However, I know the prep program they are in and they will be taking 10 more full length exams, 2 of those being AAMC official dispersed throughout the weeks before their test date, and that plays into my confidence they will score there or higher. Again, I appreciate the feedback!

With 3.2+ GPA in both cumulative and science as well as MCAT 505+ or so they might get interviews at newest DO schools. MD is out of the question at this point with any MCAT.

Would you agree with Weirdy that assuming a ~504 MCAT with that GPA that DPM is still on the table? Also, another question that has popped into my mind: with that GPA, will Podiatry schools want a sufficient explanation such as a poor semester due to life difficulties or are they just generally more forgiving of poor undergrad performance?

Yes, I agree that with current GPA and 504 MCAT you might get accepted but I also agree with him that it is not so much about getting accepted as much as getting through med school.

If you get interview invite, they might or might not ask you about poor performance in specific semester or specific class. I would have a good explanation ready. At one of my interviews I was asked about one course and the grade I got and was asked to provide and explanation.

I had a poor undergrad GPA but decent MS Kinesiology GPA + research + work experience + compelling personal statement.

I was still completely grilled during interviews about low sGPA. They asked me to explain, poked and prodded in detail, and for good reason.
I told them what went wrong, how I changed it, and what my graduate program showed to prove that I had improved my studying skills.

Most, if not all programs will ask. It is their job to ensure the students they accept can pass the curriculum. Does that make sense?

Absolutely. Thanks to you and de Ribas for answering my questions.
