Wisconsin c/o 2019 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light onto the admissions process for UW. I know they like to look at the applicant more holistically, but do they have stages/cut-offs in the process, what factors do they tend to look at more closely, etc.?

They LOVE diversity. Seriously, they eat it up. Unique experiences, interests, or backgrounds. Anything that makes you stand out. Also, I feel like our class is pretty spread out in terms of ages. You don't have to be fresh out of undergrad to have a shot. We even have a couple people in our year with kids.

Im not sure about exact stages, but they evaluate academic and nonacademic factors separately, probably with some sort of scoring system. Then the entire committee confers and selects students based on that.

Thanks for the insight! That's good to know 🙂 This wait is brutal, so knowing a little more about what they look for and the process gives me something to chew on in the meantime.

I just got an email regarding nonresident tuition status. This is the only email I've received after submitting the supplemental. Did any non-resident applicants receive this email?

I'm OOS and I haven't received anything. What did it say?
It just says that I don't qualify as a WI resident based on information I submitted. I already knew that I won't qualify, but I am so curious why they sent me this email since I haven't got any acceptance/rejection yet.

Check your supplemental application under Personal Section - did you accidentally click "yes" for claiming legal WI residence or exemption for non-resident tuition?

Thanks! I think I clicked yes because of GI Bill purposes. Now it makes sense now.

Yeah I got that email too and freaked out for a second. 😛

Maybe I'm not seeing it but when does UW Madison let people know their admission status by? Thanks, Im sure this has already been asked in this thread!

Usually around the second week of February.

Anyone else receive anything about OOS tuition? I haven't gotten anything. So thinking that doesn't bode well. Heh

If you talking about the IS form, only people who clicked "claiming WI resident" will get anything like that. If you didn't (like most OOS), you won't hear anything until final decisions come out so try not to worry.

Don't worry, it sounded like it was only for those who claimed residency but actually wasn't a resident.

Take a deep breath everyone, I promise it's all going to be okay. 🙂

I also found this tidbit on last year's thread about their selection process in previous years. (Although it's geared more toward IS applicants.)

"I have applied to Wisconsin's veterinary program 3 times over 4 years. I'm in-state and wait-listed at #10. Over the past years I've learned a lot about their process, and I want to post what I know because I wish I would have known this when I first got into college to better prepare. This is information that I have received from faculty, staff, fellow students and from discussion forums, I can't guarantee that the information is going to be 100% accurate for years to come, I just know what they have been doing for the past few years.
First off, don't let anyone tell you that they'll care more about your experience or passion than grades. The first step the admissions committee takes is to establish rankings, which are determined by an equation that takes into account your 3 GPAs (cumulative, required coursework, and last 30 credits), and your GRE scores. This is used together with the past 5 years of vet students to predict what a student's GPA will be after graduating from vet school. i.e. they won't take someone who - based on their predictions - will flunk out. This raw ranking counts for 60% of your application. Next, two faculty members that sit on the admission committee (which normally has some amount of rotation each year), review the complete application and grade it based on a rubric for the other 40%. As one of these faculty members said candidly to me last year, they basically take the top 50 IS and then get together and argue about the last 10."

Hey guys! Thought I'd pop in and tell you all I'm up for answering any questions you might have about UW and how vet school really is here (current second year from OOS) on here or via PM. and GOOD LUCK in the next few weeks when decisions start rolling out - it will all be okay!!!!!!!! :cat::cat::cat:

Sorry if this has already been posted but do we know if they will be submitting the decisions digitally or snail mail?

I just got a new internship and I am wondering if I should call admissions and let them know since they were asking about new experiences on the supplement. Is that a common thing to do?

Somewhere on the supplemental it said that nothing after submission would be accepted. You can try though.

Hi everyone! I'm a member of this class, 2019! I was accepted last year but deferred a to finish up my undergraduate degree. I don't know if I'll be able to answer any questions yet, but if you have any I can certainly try to answer them. I got my acceptance on February 17th, but I know plenty of others received them much earlier and much later. Also, (I'll probably keep broadcasting this so sorry in advance-) I'm looking for a roommate!!! I signed the lease for a 2 bedroom apartment on University Avenue extremely close to the vet school. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll send details...

I just got a phone call from Wisconsin. My heart stopped and I was barely able to say hello from how tongue-twisted I was. It was a telemarketer. '>.<

😛It was funny because these upcoming weeks are so nail-biting, any new post on here gets my hopes up that there's news. Can't wait till those calls start coming :xf:

Hello! I'm a bit of a lurker, but I just wanted to say hello and that I'm so excited for this school! Really, really, really hope I get a good response from them, as UW is my #1! Good luck to all, and hang in there - it's all going to be okay 🙂

This is my number one choice, and I just want to know already! I can't imagine going to another school, but I'm trying not to freak out too much, knowing how hard it is to get in OOS. I feel like I've been waiting forever, so hopefully we all hear some good news this week 🙂

Hey everyone!
I'm a current first year, and just wanted to say good luck to all of you and hopefully I'll be seeing you soon. For all of you nervously waiting, I know this time was AWEFUL with the waiting game! Next week is when Madison typically either calls for out of state or sends out acceptance letters for in state. So hang in there, the wait is almost over!
If anyone is looking for a place to live next year, I am currently renting a 2 bedroom apartment close to the vet school and I'm in need of a roommate. Let me know if you are interested and we can connect! 🙂

Hello! Do you happen to know if OOS people who were rejected hear via email or is it a letter in the mail?

Nobody has gotten an email in the past. Acceptances, wait lists, and rejections all come through mail. Some OOS acceptances are done through phone calls too.

Not to freak you guys out or anything, but last year I received my phone call on 2/11... Which is tomorrow! So keep your phones close this week and good luck to everyone! 😀

But that was a phone call and they don't call very often, correct?

Hehe, sorry I couldn't help myself 😛 I believe they call most of the OOS students. IS is snail mail though.

I was under the impression that they only call their favorite OOS applicants. At least that's what everyone has posted in the past. Are they changing it this year?

I'm IS and from what I gathered in previous years (at least for IS), letters start arriving around the 18th...which is next week. I can't focus on anything right now, even though I have at least another week of waiting :/

I have no idea.. I'm sure they're doing it the same way as they always have. I just know a lot of OOS people got phone calls last year.

I called today and withdrew my application (OOS) because I got accepted to my in-state school. They were so incredibly nice that I started to have second thoughts about waiting to see if they made me an offer! But my IS school was my top pick, and the tuition is cheaper... so, one less applicant in the pool. 🙂 Good luck to everyone, I hope you hear soon!

Thank you for being so considerate of us, and congrats on getting into your top choice! 🙂

Oh I got called does that mean I was a 'favorite'? Haaahaaa. They called at least half of the OOS applicants that I know of - I got a call pretty late at night, too. Think it was close to 7 PM my time so wasn't expecting it. Good luck!

OMG, hpequalslove, you nearly gave me a heart attack. I thought you were an applicant this year and had just gotten called today...then I saw that you're a current student. Whew! :nailbiting:

True story- I got a call today from a number that said "no caller ID". As soon as I answered it I dropped the call because I was in the basement of our animal facility. Didn't get a call back but I had a minor heart attack. All I could think was that it was either a telemarketer or Wisconsin.

Anyone heard anything yet? I totally thought someone would've been called by now :\
