Had the interview here today. The interview went smoothly, the student guides were awesome (hi ravensgal, it was good to meet you), and the general attitude of the school was positive.
 
This is a little brag post about DMU and why it is awesome. I am not sure what other schools do, but for our first and second biochem test, Dr. Wilson said he would sit in front of his computer the night before and answer any question that came in before 11pm. We just had a biochem test today and Dr. Philp went through the entire campus asking people if they had questions until about 10pm last night. Is it a main reason to go to DMU? No. But it does kind of show the atmosphere of DMU. just a little FYI.

I saw one of them eating lunch with a group of students during my interview there! Seems like an excellent professor!

Aw! Well no harm done then right? The school has to be a good fit for you despite what other people say. We're all different and we all want different things from the school we go to. I felt like this about Nova. I hated Nova but everyone on SDN loves it. It's all a matter of personal preference. I hope you get a school you like!

That's too bad. Like Jaboomday said, probably for the best if you didn't like them.
 
So I read through the email a little more closely and it says, "Your position within the Alternate List guarantees that you will be considered if space becomes available."
Maybe that's a good sign?

NSU is great. I wouldn't be sad to go there. DMU seemed like a very very good fit for me and my family however and I would prefer to go there.
Maybe I made that too obvious in my interview and that's why they waitlisted me. Lol

NSU made me feel like I was at Seaworld. lol

I'm bummed out that you were put on the alternate list. I really thought you'd easily get in. 🙁

I don't think that is the reason. Did you mention having a lot of other interviews?

I hear the waitlist has pretty good movement! Don't worry though! Things will work out like they're supposed to! I just know you'll end up happy, studying medicine at a place you love. Despite what you hear, good things happen to good people!

Thanks! I agree, I will enjoy wherever I go. There will be things that suck, sure, but I've always been a positive thinker.
I may have mentioned that I had interviews somewhere else, although I don't know why that would influence their decision. Most everyone interviews somewhere else too. If they asked if I've applied to other schools, or even if I've been accepted, I'd be honest about it.

Oh I agree! You have to be honest, but I always make sure to show very fervently why THIS school is a priority to me. I'm really grasping at straws here because I think you're awesome and I can't see why they wouldn't accept you with a scholarship.

I am really surprised to hear that you're an alternate! Hopefully in the first quartile, or whatever it is I saw people saying on last year's thread. I doubt you made it too obvious; I flat-out told my interviewers that DMU was my #1. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Like I was just posting on the accepted thread, it can be a crap shoot. I think I'm high on the waitlist (see what I posted above from the email they sent me). Like you said, what will happen will happen and it's all good, but thanks guys for the support!

it's funny because I really thought I rocked that interview. maybe they didn't like the fact that even though I was fast Track interviewe my interview date was kinda late

I was fastrack and rescheduled my interview a month after my original scheduled date.

They don't rank the wait list until May, so you have from now until May to convince them that you should be n the first quartile.

If that's the case, why does the email say the following:

"While we are currently unable to offer you a seat in the class, we may make additional offers of admission at the close of the application year. Your position within the Alternate List guarantees that you will be considered if space becomes available."

Because at the end of the interview season they look at everyone's apps and then they will rank them so yours will be reviewed again.

That is in April or May. I think that everyone that is on the alternate list is "considered" each time something opens up after April. Why else would they have been kept on the WL and not rejected?
 
Hi everybody! I've been kinda lurking on SDN and haven't really posted yet but I wanted to say thanks for all the really helpful info! 🙂

Just wondering, I have an interview near DMU the first week of november and currently my interview is Oct. 25 at DMU. Does anyone know if there are interview dates on the 30th or 31st? I'm trying to see if I can change my date and consolidate flights. 🙂

Sadly the closest interview to the days you want is Oct. 26th. The next one after that is Nov. 8th. No clue if anyone of those days are even open.

Not to get your hopes up or down, but 2 years ago there was very little waitlist movement and last year there was a decent amount. From what I understand (and others may be able to better detail the process), in March or April, they will e-mail everyone on the waitlist and ask if they are still interested in a waitlist position. If you respond with yes, they rank you into quartiles so you are placed on the waitlist based on that. I THINK. But you really won't find much out until about April which sucks.

This is pretty on point. My understanding is that they will revisit wait listed applications and determine which belongs in which quartile. They take into consideration your primary application, your interview, and ALL other materials you send in after.

How do I know this?
Because DMU is my #1 choice and I, too, was placed on the wait list. I ended up calling multiple times to see how the wait list worked and asked them what I could do to move myself up the wait list and improve my chances of acceptance.

What did I do to improve my chances?
-I was interviewed in early January and found out I was wait listed in either early Feb or late Jan (I forgot). I ended up sending a Letter of Intent to the admissions office as well as the dean (recommended to me by the admissions office) about a week after I was wait listed.
-I sent in 2 update letters with new information about 1-1.5 months apart with the last update being sent in around mid April, right before I was told that they would start ranking the wait list.
-I sent them a Letter of Recommendation from an Osteopathic Physician that I shadowed who was a DMU alumni, conveniently 🙂

The reasoning behind the update letters, according to the admissions person that I was talking to, is that it forces them to keep pulling your file, thus keeping your file new and interesting.

Hope this sheds some light on how the wait list works
 
woot woot! The complete email said that it would take up to 60 days to review my file. It took 59. I was going to call 6AM PST on Monday next week but now I don't have to because I got an interview invite! I was sure that taking so long would mean they didn't like my app...
Ironically, I got the email as I was looking up the word "frustrated" for quotations :whistle:
