Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Guys,

I was checking the Pros and Cons that were provided by some people that attended DMU. Any idea why this school has a bad score given by these 2 reviewers for Post Grad Opportunity? This may be the wrong place to post this but help me out here.

Rescheduled to October 19!!! 😀
the lady first said that she is going to write my name down on the list. I freaked out here because my name was already on this list and I was still calling. She then says "first, let me go and and check if there were any cancellations". I knew my neurotic behavior would pay off! haha🙂

I've been complete here for a little over 5 weeks

Would really like the chance to interview here, I've heard a lot of great things about the school!

I'll trade you my ii here for yours at Western. haha...

Just came from interviewing here. Such a nice school. Des Moines is a great area as well. Starting the morning off with Dr. Mueller was great. He's such a funny and quirky guy with the most contagious laugh I've ever seen. Crossing my fingers!!!

Is there a hotel which provides shuttle from airport to hotel, hotel to school, and then back to the airport? the airfare from CA is so much $$ that I really don't want to rent a car. 😳

Yes. I stayed at Hampton Inn and it provides free shuttles to campus and to the airport and back!

I checked many pages on the thread and couldn't find anything. So, anyone know why the Post Grad Opportunity is considered bad at DMU?

Like others I'm not having luck finding this info after skimming all 30 pages in this thread. Anyone care to share a link or explain the low post-grad opportunity scores given in the pros and cons of you school thread for DMU?

I honestly don't know why. The students usually get their first or second choice in the match and we do match into ACGME university programs. Our school has a lot of respect in the Midwest. The only thing I could possibly think of is that DMU isn't affiliated with a lot of OPTIs, but that doesn't seem to be a problem for finding good residencies.

On this page you can find a list of names and contact info of student volunteers who are willing to host interviewees.

I had a very good experience with a MS-3 who, despite her busy schedule, was willing to host me for a night. Saved money on transportation and lodging; of course, I bought her small dinner as a token of my appreciation.

I'd check that out if I were you.

Yeah, this school is gnargnar.

Are there ever any speakers on DMU's campus about health issues? I come from a big university and attend Grand Rounds every week for my job, just curious if DMU has something similar or not.

Yes! DMU has a grand rounds. They also have Friday noon seminars that are more research-oriented presentations. Pretty much every day at lunch there is SOME health/medical/research presentation you can attend, and they often have free food for the first 50-100 in the door.

Sweet! Thanks!

Well I just got off the waitlist here! By withdrawing. Lol
I've heard back from all the schools I interviewed at and chosen western comp-NW since its also a great school but in a much better location for my family's specific circumstances.
I wish all of you best of luck here!

Congrats, Dudeliness! Really sorry that I won't have the pleasure of meeting you as a classmate! Wishing you the best, sir!

Alright, got a call this AM about an opening for interviewing this Friday, 19OCT12. Wish me luck. Hopefully not all the seats are filled yet.

I don't think they would've extended an interview invite if everything were filled. Good luck!

So excited to interview here! hope it lives up to all the hype and my interview goes well.🙂

I came from here last week and I was impressed with how up-to-date the school is and how happy the students are.

The interview is how everyone says. Just stay calm and answer the questions as best as you can. I had a four-panel interview and the questions were very application specific, with a couple "How do you know you're prepared for med school?" type things in there. Not bad at all. Best of luck!

thanks for the advice. I just hope that the interview being low-stress is true for me as well because I was told this before my KCUMB interview several times, and then the interview itself felt like a grill fest. Fingers crossed!:xf:

I know what you mean! When you first walk into the admissions office, you are given a purple folder (very good quality btw!!). In it, there's a card with your interviewers' names. Ask the current students during lunch (which rocked. You get whatever you want in the cafeteria, so stock up!) about how the interviewers are. I heard the plastic surgeon is tough, as was already noted somewhere in this thread and after an interviewee came out. Other than that, the other interviewees I talked to after they came out felt that their interviews were pretty good.

Well, I just canceled my DMU interview for Oct. 19. Good luck to everyone interviewing here.

Won't be attending DMU next year. DMU is a great school and I wouldn't hesitate to attend! Good luck to all still waiting!

Its almost here! Anyone else going to be there?

Good luck, congratulations, and remember to stay positive to all of those applying this year.

Have there been any interview invites lately? Sitting complete here since Sept 5th

Anyone else get the feeling that we'll have a lot of decisions coming out soon? I'm thinking tomorrow. *crosses fingers*

Interview Tomorrow!!

However, flight delayed, so missed my connection fml...can't make the interview!

Anyone else been in this situation before? I'm so worried. DMU is my top choice!

I have not been in that situation, but I almost did miss my interview because my phone decided to turn off in the middle of the night.

Thankfully, I didn't miss it nor was I late, and the adcom people seemed very understanding, telling me that they would have called me to wake me up if I didn't show up.

So I guess that same courtesy would apply to everyone else who, because of situations beyond their control, cannot make it to the interview.

how is the interview day scheduled? Are the interviews the first thing on the agenda?

how is the interview day scheduled? Are the interviews the first thing on the agenda?

They were the very last thing in the day. Mine ended at around 2:30pm (Started at 2:00). I think they start interviewing 1:00pm.

Before lunch its a bunch of information sessions. After lunch you tour or interview.

how is the interview day scheduled? Are the interviews the first thing on the agenda?

Nope. Interviews start at 1:15. You will either go then, 2:00 or 2:45. If you are not at 1:15 then you go on a tour first. If you are at 1:15 then you go on a tour after your interview.

what time do the interviews end if you are in the 2nd group? my flight out leaves at 535.. will i make it?

I was in the second group and I was done before 4pm local time. And I even took extra time to just walk around the building and check things out.

Waitlisted. Wow and I thought the interview couldn't have gone better.
