2013-2014 Western Michigan University School of Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm hoping for some OOS love =D

Same here! I cant tell you how excited I am for this school! I think it's going to be great! I spent two years in MI and WMU was on my mind before I decided to go into medicine. Needless to say I was ecstatic when I heard they were starting a med school 🙂

Was kinda excited to see this opening during my first application cycle. Unfortunately I am applying as an OOS, but I grew up in Kalamazoo MI so this is pretty exciting! Currently a NJ resident, but I know I will be applying here.

does it say anywhere on their site their preference or if there neutral? I checked WMU out and nothing indicates in state preference. Im OOS so this is one of the schools on the top of my list.

From their FAQs:
"Do you give preference to Michigan students?"
"We are recruiting outstanding students from across the United States. We will accept outstanding students from southwest Michigan, other parts of Michigan, the midwest, and from all regions of the United States. Our students will reflect the diversity of the patients we serve."

well outstanding all across the U.S. and parts of michigan so no preference

Hey all,

I'm excited about WMU starting up a school. Excited about their format and hopefully we will all get some good news. Good luck all!

I'm a Chip and bleed maroon and hold but give me some Bronco love!

Applying IS! It's both interesting and exciting to be part of their first set of applications. The lady in admissions is SO nice too -- it was refreshing, 🙂.

Applying as OOS as well. Curious to see how this turns out.

I'm a Kalamazoo resident and I'm excited to apply to WMU. I'd love to be a part of the university's first class of graduates.

Finally!! Got some correspondence from them today!!

Can someone post the secondary prompts if they've already received it? thanks!

No secondary yet, just an email saying they received our primary application.

This must be a pretty serious screen of our AMCAS, sheesh.

first year would make you think that they will be less restrictive on stats, yeah?

Yeah, but I can imagine they are probably getting a lot of applicants because most people think exactly that.

Even so I don't know why they wouldn't just send the secondary to everyone and generate more revenue.

I've been talking with admissions here for over a year now. They are screening on secondary. However they are being more flexible their starting year by only looking at the most recent 60 hours instead of the overall cGPA.

"A minimum overall GPA of 3.25. For students with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.25 we may consider the GPA of the most recent 60 hours of credit and/or the rigor of the academic institution."

Whoaaaa this would be really awesome. I hope they still consider my most recent 60 hours even though I JUST miss that cutoff by .08 😱

They are definitely not hurting for revenue right now.

Do you give preference to Michigan students? We are recruiting outstanding students from across the United States. With one tuition rate for both in-state and out-of-state students, we will accept students from all regions of the United States. Our students will reflect the diversity of the patients we serve.

Do you give preference to students from Western Michigan University or other schools? The medical school has preferred relationships with Western Michigan University (WMU), the WMU Lee Honors College and Kalamazoo College. The medical school seeks to admit outstanding students from these institutions into each entering medical school class. Students from these institutions apply to WMed using the regular medical student application through AMCAS and following the regular time frame.

I mean, they're a new med school, I figure they would want the extra cash lol 🙂

The university received one of the biggest one time donations (100 million) ever given to any university to start the med school. Plus, the community had already been a clinical site for MSU for the past 40 years, so a lot of infrastructure and general training is already complete. They got deep pockets.

They're a private school based within a public college, which my understanding means they don't receive the same (if any) state funding that U of M, Wayne and MSU get. So they have the equal tuition for in and out of state and don't necessarily have to give preference to in state students, though in the end a lot of the students that are going to want to go to school in MI will be from MI. Pretty sure OU and CMU are similar, definitely know they are the private/public situation, though I heard CMU's mission has to do with rural MI docs so wouldn't be surprised if they looked for state ties.

no secondary yet; OOS 3.6/34

It makes sense that they have a serious screen. It's a brand new med school so its future totally depends on the first 4 classes they recruit - it either makes or breaks them. Therefore, it's pretty difficult getting into these new schools. Virginia Tech was like this when they first opened ~2(?) years ago. My friend who is now in Hopkins Med School didn't even get a secondary from VT. So it's my guess that new schools really want to find the perfect applicants that fit their mission/vision for their first few entering classes to build a solid foundation. Only further down the road will it start thinking revenue wise..

Got the secondary! There is an online interview that is part of the secondary.

The website described it as a series of multiple choice questions to give them an idea of who you are, I believe.

Oh! It's probably like one those personality tests you have to take to apply to a job... "If you saw your coworker steal something, would you report it?"
Word to the wise: take the moral high-ground and be consistent with your answers! lol
