I also got a UTH interview yesterday for the 5th. It was an unexpected surprise this late in the game. I was also complete sometime in june. I guess they finally started going through the stack a second time.

Atleast at this school they're match heavy so we're not interviewing for a waitlist spot. I'm sure it's a great school, but does anyone else feel like it may have a hard time living up to all the hype it gets around here?

I've been impressed by all the schools I've been to so far, each with it's own pros/cons so it seems strange that this particular school is so highly regarded....I guess I just have to wait and see.

Good name guys! I don't know if it's stress from work or Nov. 15th or what, but i'm down. I've gotten really sick and it came out of nowhere. My nose wont stop running, my whole body is aching, diarhea, soar throat, headache, congestion, .... the whole 9 yards.

Damn you Tech! Why couldn't you give me an offer too.

For all of you who have yet to interview at UTH, have hope! I was talking to Dr. K yesterday and she mentioned that they have many interviews left, hundreds of interviewees, and everyone will have a fair chance up until the very last interview day. So don't fret and do your best! :luck:

Ew, feel better cyclingmo! I have a sore throat which I'm attributing to the crying/screaming/talking about my acceptance from yesterday. Haha, woops.

Haha, thanks. You feel better too. Stop screaming, it's all real. ;)

If you want to get down to it, its the TMC. In other words, UTH has the tallest and shiniest buildings next to it...lol. "Moths to a flame" and all. Its also busy, which adds a sense of energy and excitement. Will all that really mean much as a medical student? Most likely not.

Well, it's the TMC, and the way they really tried to sell themselves. The tour is probably the best one I've been on, because they try to catch you at high points, like helicopters and heart surgeries. I mean, I saw a helicopter take off from the roof I was standing on (they got a call while we were up there.) It was supersweet. Also, my best friend and I knew a few people at UTH and they were extremely nice about chatting me up during lunch and stuff. The students there seem pretty happy too. Again, the TMC. !!!

Yeah, this is what I always thought. Sure you're at the TMC but how integrated are the med students into this amazing complex?

I really do want to find out what all the hype is about & see if I really will fit there. This is the only reason I'm interviewing. It'll be really strange to interview at a school when I already have an acceptance to my #1 school. Maybe I'll enjoy the interview day more. . .

Yeah, this is what I always thought. Sure you're at the TMC but how integrated are the med students into this amazing complex?

I'd like to know this too. I just don't know if I should rank UTH 1 or be happy with UTMB/A&M...

I think its all the resources available to the students. In addition to being in the largest medical center in the world that offers awesome clinical and research opportunities, UTH med students also have access to other great resources within the school. For example, while some schools boast having one or two clinical skills assessment rooms where you can interview a standardized patient while being monitored, UTH has 15-20 of those rooms. GWU makes a big deal out of having one of those dummies where you can practice treatment and procedures and the dummy will respond electrically (EKG changes, etc) and with all sorts of complex changes (down to pupil dilation). UTH has one or two of those dummies also and I never learned about it until I got there to interview.

I think the reason many people are so impressed is because there is very little information to be gleaned from UTH's website, so when you get to the interview, you're blown away by everything they have to offer.

...Of course, thats just my opinion. I could be wrong.

From the interview and from talking to students here, I really get the vibe that UTH is very proactive and supportive of the students. If there was something, in particular, that REALLY struck your interest here in TMC I bet UTH would help you get involved. They probably know how to pull a few strings around here. ;)

for all of you with acceptances, congrats!!! for all of you with MULTIPLE offers and know where you want to go, please decline the others ! I really WANTT to go to A&M and am counting on any seat left vacant by you!!!!!! THANKS!

It seems to me that texas schools primarily compete on the continuum of experience vs. exposure. IE at Baylor you will be exposed to a lot of great research and resources, but will have to work much harder to get hands on experience since TMC is so massive and has a number of large residency programs. The opposite is true of a place like Tech

so here is my take on the spectrum: (FWIW)

<--Experience-- | --Exposure-->
Tech; UTMB; A&M; UTHSCSA; UTSW; UTH; Baylor

I don't wan to deny that all schools will give you hands on experience and expose you to interesting research, patients etc this is just how I have parsed the schools pros and cons.

As for UTH's popularity on this forum. I think schools that are heavy on the exposure side of the spectrum are very exciting to interview with because they are really pushing the bounds of medicine. I came away with this excitement from my UTH, Baylor, and UTSW interviews. However, only UTH is perceived as an accessible school by most average candidates, and this is where I believe it garners its popularity.

For those who are waiting on Tech, I just got some "insider" information from admissions. 110 offers were sent out yesterday, which is about a third of the total amount of offers that will be made before it's all over. Hang in there, guys....we got this...keep your hopes alive.

We need to collect some data- when each of the schools will be sending out more offers, how many have been (and will be) sent, etc.

this is the only info I can verify so far:
UTHSCSA- another batch around Nov. 29th
TCOM- check online status after Thanksgiving, all will probably be sent out by Dec 21, when they close for the holidays
A&M- said they don't know

Yeah, this is what I always thought. Sure you're at the TMC but how integrated are the med students into this amazing complex?

I really do want to find out what all the hype is about & see if I really will fit there. This is the only reason I'm interviewing. It'll be really strange to interview at a school when I already have an acceptance to my #1 school. Maybe I'll enjoy the interview day more. . .

Its a great school, as is any school that accepts you in Tx. With all the other attributes people listed though, it really is the TMC that does it for them I think. Does it matter? I personally don't think so. Every med school, certainly the larger ones, will have a thousand times more "opportunities" than you'll ever be able to take advantage of. When you actually get there, you're gonna want fewer things to do, not more...lol. It'd be wiser to decide based on how cushy the seats in the library are, 'cause that's where your butt is going to be 99% of the time.

As far as clinical exp intensity, I'd guess that nobody beats Parkland, just based on volume and density of patients...they aren't spread out in so many hospitals as at UTH and UTMB. But, since 3rd year sucks everywhere, I wouldn't really care about that either....lol.

Did your insider tell you when Tech was going to send out more acceptances? are they going to go out in batches, or one at a time?

I would not say that Baylor gets you little experience. The majority of rotations are at an understaffed county hospital. From what I got from talking with students, when the new residents came in the 4th years had more experience than they did.

I also like that they make sure you spread rotations amongst different settings. For example, medicine is 3 months. You do one month at Ben Taub (county), one month at St. Luke's (private), and one month at the VA (veterans). No other school I've visited does this.

I'm not sure if UTH rotations are split the same way, but there are certainly opportunities to rotate amongst different patient populations.

I really believe that's what the strength of the TMC is. I personally don't give a crap about research, but I do think that there are way more clinical opportunities than elsewhere. The patient population is extremely diverse which might not be the case at some other institutions where you only rotate through one school affiliated hospital and a private practice setting.

Anxious but optimistic here. Diana is my hero. She lasted through a year of this sheeite, we can too.

Good work tooload on getting info! We should take turns calling so they don't get annoyed with students calling to ask the same questions.

I have to disagree on UTSW being that low on the experience part. I'm pretty sure Parkland will give more clinical experience than you'll ever want. If nothing else, you'll get to deliver dozens of babies during your rotation.

Yesterday when I called San Antonio, Natalie told me I hadn't been accepted in this batch. Today I got an invitation to the Showcase Weekend for accepted students... I was a little confused. So I called them back and Sylvia told me I HAD BEEN ACCEPTED and apologized for the mistake. I wasn't sure that I believed her, so I called my premed advisor and after verifying it with TMDSAS she told me that I had in fact been accepted!! I'm freaking out!! Worst day ever yesterday... next to my daughter's birthday, best day ever today!!!

YAY hawk!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

I have a validation date of 111607 now. I have been validated by TMDSAS. I believe my life is now complete.

CONGRATS! Way to go Hawk. Tell the rest of us no-acceptees how it feels. ;)

So I know this is probably going to sound stupid but how do we accept our acceptance? I just want to make sure that I dont miss my window of opportunity. Also, I got the showcase letter from San antonio yesterday, are they going to send us a packet later i guess?

Hey guys got a few quick questions.
1. I just got accepted by UTMB and A&M yesterday, today I was checking my file at TMDSAS, it still says I don't have multiple offers and my profile is not validated. Should I call the schools to see everything is ok?
2. I interviewed at UTSW on Nov 10, does anyone know when do they send out more offers?
3. What are some factors I should consider about choosing UTMB and A&M.
Congrats to all those who got offers!

Does it not tell you in the email/letter? In mine for UTH it says to reply by email to accept the offer. Which was funny, because the reply goes to Dr. K...and my reply in a nutshell was WOOHOO!! :D Actually I was more speechless than anything else, haha.

Haha, I actually know some kids that go there and I'm making them do the dirty work for me  When I actually called admissions, I really didn't get much...However, my insiders at Tech tell me they do "rolling" offers...so I don't know for sure if they will spread them out or do another big batch of ~ 200 or so....chances are they will spread them out over the next couple of weeks and maybe utilize the match to some extent.

The end of November (around the 29th) looks to be another big offer day for A&M as well as San Antonio...and maybe even Tech....so keep checking that email.

this thread is getting unbearably low on the list... time to bump it back up.

we're better than this.

Just wanted to send out some love and major congratz to all those that have been accepted! :biglove:

On a darker note, this whole process is absolutely draining...just about when you think you're judgement day has *finally* come and it's all over (either good or bad), they provide that miniscule pea-size amount of hope that leaves you sweating some more for the next two weeks...the torture, paranoia, and absolute neurotic-ness just keeps going and going and going....:scared: (they couldn't possibly keep this up all the way until february....you think?)

Well after being at the A&M interview all day yesterday without a laptop or PC at the motel in Temple, I finally was able to check my email today when I got home, and got the good news that I got accepted everywhere I've been to an interview! YES! Plus I had invites for interviews for Houston and San Antonio (the last two I applied for) waiting for me. Today is officially the best day ever of my life!

How could you be rejected anyways? You have some awesome numbers.

Congrats though!

So are you still going to go those interviews, or is one of your top choices UTSW or UTMB?

Thnx! Congrats on UTMB and UTSW... good luck with baylor as well as harvard.

You have to do written responses for several schools to actually decline the offer at TCOM UTMB and im assuming most of the others (i guess not UTH though). That being said, its probably gonna be a couple of weeks before schools compile a bunch of spots and send out new acceptances. I am amazingly blessed and received 4 offers, three of which I will decline as soon as possible because I know that several people are still waiting (i already sent the one I could, pulling for everybody who is still waiting.)

This has probably been asked a million times but what is the situation with UTHSCSA in terms of how many prematch acceptances they gave and are they giving in waves, etc.? i'm hoping they still have some acceptances left because i'm interviewing in late november. thanks.

Regarding UTSW and UTMB, does anyone know either:

1 If the adcom met between last weekend and yesterday?
and
2.If they'll be sending any more acceptances between now and the match?

I'd appreciate any inside info.

UTMB seems to be acting like they did last year, sending out all prematches at once. If that's so, I want to point out that last year they used the match as a means of offering spots to those who interviewed after Nov 15. Not to be depressing....who wants to go to that dumb school anyway...ha.

Just wanted to say congratulations to all those who got prematch offers! :) Also, thanks to those who are trying to quickly decline offers to schools they are not going to so that it opens spots for students. You guys are keeping our hopes alive.
