2007 MCV Central (Part II)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm working on amcas for next yr 🙁
Facebook already has many of those committed to mcv up and that is by no means everyone who is going. Some friends have told me they haven't gotten around to signing up. To date 8 ISF of 45-50 spots, 7 ISM of 45-50 spots, 7 OOSF of 40 spots, 7 OOSM of 40 spots. I'm really trying to be positive but real at the same time. May 15th should not be a count down date. Even if people with multiple spots have to decide many hang on until June 1st and there is a lag between when schools send out offers. It's not like mcv has a real list. They are pulling who they want out of a pool as does every other school. Still, I would say based on reading through last yrs posts which one can search and pull off sdn most of the waitlist cleared by early June after that nothing...

May 15th at least gives us something to look forward to. Last year several people were accepted on May 15th and 16th. I'm putting off working on AMCAS 2008, but if I don't get an acceptance off one of my three waitlists by June 1st, Ill submit it. At this point it's hard not to be at least a little depressed about the whole thing, but I'm trying to keep my spirits up. Unless this year is completely crazy, there have to be at least some acceptances from the waitlist. It would help to know where we are on the list, though. Well, good luck to everyone, try to relax a bit, and make sure you let us know if you hear anything.

FYI:

Hi, I'm an OOSer and received an offer today. Also, I waitlisted as accepted elsewhere and still interested.

Congrats!!! Thanks for letting us know. It is good to see some movement!

Great news! Hopefully you got this party started:hardy: quote=basecamp;5102983]FYI:

Great news Basecamp!!!!! Congratulations!

Congrats Basecamp! If things go right, hope to see you there in August :-D

Just to add a little more hope for all of us...I was digging through last years thread for VCU (yeah, I'm REALLY bored today) and found out that 38 offers were made on May 15th alone. Good luck everyone....I'm tired of waiting with no acceptances in hand...but I'll live.

??? I counted 5 OOS and 2 IS on the 15th of May.

If you go a couple of days later in the thread, somebody called the admissions office a day or two later and was told there were 38 offers made on May 15th alone...obviously not everyone posts on SDN.

I haven't posted here since I was 'waitlisted' at VCU (3rd waitlist) back in January. I think you just made my day. I hope the person who posted wasn't lying.

Thanks for the congratulations... I do intend on graciously declining the offer as I'm already committed to attending another university, so good luck to you all, and I hope one of you gets my spot.

THANKS!! We do appreciate it.

Yay, Basecamp! Congratulations & thank you!!

👍

Good luck to everyone still waiting :luck:

i met with dr. w-c earlier this week. unless you're at the absolute top of the list she won't give u any hint on where you are (i even asked her if i have any realisitic chance of getting in, and she was like, we just don't comment on where applicants are on the waitlist)....i personally thought this was pretty rude bc i know for a fact dr. h (the old dean) would give students the courtesy of telling them if they actually had a chance or not....just thought i'd share that

Thanks for the info SethyG, does anyone know their reasoning for not releasing any information about waitlisted positions? How does it benefit them enough to justify doing something that puts applicants (and their potential students/customers) in a tough spot for an extended time?

I'd like to know an answer to that question as well. If the waitlist/alternate list is ranked and those rankings are "set in stone", why not let those who are waiting know where they stand? I've got an idea why they keep it a secret, but not going to lay it out here....Big Brother is always watching...

I heard they'll give you a better understanding of where you are on the waitlist come May 15 so we only got one week left!

Sethy G, thanks for the informative post. So what else did you guys talk about during your time with Dr. W-C??

They really cant tell how the waitlist will move in a given year and for legal/cruelty reasons (if you didnt get in) can't tell you. They are not trying to put anyone in a tough spot but that doesnt mean they are going to leave themselves wide open.

Imagine how pissed you would be if Dr wc told you that you were going to get in so you went to R-Va and got an apt and later you find out that there wasn't enough movement and you didnt get in?

In my experience, Dr H really wouldnt divulge that info either, at least not until the waitlist began moving (like around end of may). Now if you were at the very, very top of the list she might let on before May 15th. I was top 5 instate and I met with her in her office yet still had to weasel it out of her that I would probably get in.

Remember this is WCs first year as dean so she really cant gauge things like Dr H could.

I always wondered about this too. I came to the conclusion (without any proof or reason) that it must be because they are worried about demographics.

Remember that there is an instate and an out of state waitlist so it stands to reason that they may use the waitlist to keep the class balanced in all demographic categories. Now I have no reason to believe this but it is the only thing that I could come up with about why they won't divulge the rank.

Does anyone know what you are expected to maintain once you are accepted to VCU? What if, by chance, I got a C- this semester even if I'm already in, is that ok???????

Thanks for the thoughts on the lack of info about waitlist positions. Does anyone have any idea how many people are on the waitlist? Are there 20 of us or 100? Good luck to everyone. . .

I say toss him out and open up the waitlist. Here, here! (I'm kidding!)

This makes sense, actually. They really can't disclose a rank if their worried about class demographics. Thanks for sharing.

Hey I just withdrew and I hope the spot goes to one of you on SDN. Good luck!

Is the grade set in stone? If not explain your situation to the professor and ask if he/she will be nice enough to change it to a C just so that you wont be in danger of losing your spot in the class. If you go about it in a tail-between-your-legs kind of way the professor may just do it for you. If he wont do that I would contact MCV and explain the situation to them. I doubt they would drop you for one bad grade especially if you have maintained decent grades in your other courses.

Actually I would put the number closer to 200 or more. I have heard from multiple people that often 1/2 of the class comes from the waitlist. It seems like much of my class came off the waitlist. So that would mean at least 90 people are on the waitlist and come off of it. MCV would keep at least double that number to make sure that they could fill the class every year. So that brings you to around 200.

Thanks for letting us know, remo! 🙂

Has anyone established how one is notified if they get off the waitlist? Is it another one of those infamous status updates? 🙄

Yeah, Youll get an email at about 603-604pm eastern time telling you that your status page was updated.

Hi everyone. I just withdrew my application to VCU. I'm OOS. I hope my spot goes to one of the SDN WLsters. GOOD LUCK :luck:

VD-MD, did you withdraw an acceptance or your spot on the waitlist? In any case, I assume you are in somewhere else - congrats! 👍

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Now lets get this waitlist moving! I'm both excited and terrified that next Tuesday is May 15th.😳 :luck:

I hate to say it, but the trickle down affect of people withdrawing applications might take awhile. May 15th might be a bit of a tease, but the following month afterward and even into late June will hopefully be a promising time.

Good luck guys 👍

So I got an e-mail form MCV that I thought would interest you guys. I cut an pasted but it is still pretty long.

MATCH
Our graduating students did extremely well in the Match this year. Ninety-four per cent matched with a training program prior to the scramble and 100% matched after the scramble. There were very impressive results in the exceptionally competitive specialties. Three students matched in urology; two in neurosurgery (there were only 17 spots offered nationwide); three in ophthalmology; two in orthopedic surgery; three in plastic surgery; three in dermatology, and three in otolaryngology.

ADMISSIONS
Currently the matriculating medical school class, which is to begin in August, 2007, is full. The waitlist has been formalized and many are anxiously hoping a seat will open. The average MCAT score this year is 30.5 and the average undergraduate GPA is 3.6. In total this past year, there were 5700 applications. Of those, 3300 were invited to submit supplemental applications and 730 interviewed.

International Activities (i included this because people have asked me)
This year, five of our M4 students had the opportunity to study at the University of Messina School of Medicine in Italy. This is part of an on-going exchange program between VCU School of Medicine and the University of Messina. The students received free room and board plus a stipend.

We will be hosting our first student from Cordoba, Spain this summer, and will be making available the opportunity for rising M4 students to study there also. In addition, this summer we will be exploring the possibility of making a similar arrangement with the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.

During the first week of June, 22 first-year medical students and 15 faculty from VCU SOM will be traveling to the poorest regions of Honduras for a medical mission trip. As part of HOMBRE (Honduras Outreach Medical Brigada Relief Effort), they will be continuing the mission of the organization -- to provide care to those who need it most.

Hi everybody! I am not sure this helps or not, but I tried emailing Dr. MW Cook regarding my position on the waitlist. She replied saying that she'll have a better idea after May 15th (again). Best of luck to everyone.

Instatewaiter, thanks so much for posting that! Sounds like some really cool international opportunities are available and coming soon. Now if I can just get accepted! 😀

in reply to instatewaiters post, does "full" mean there have been 184 or whatever number of people who have accepted the offer to go to vcu? so basically there will be no more more waitlist movement?

My guess would be that a 'full' class means that all spots (184) are currently held by students who have paid the matriculation fee, and the waitlist can and probably will move come May 15 when all applicants are forced to relinquish all but one acceptance. If any students have paid the matriculation fee, but decide upon a different institution, they eat the matriculation fee and free up a lovely spot at MCV/VCU for the next applicant on the waitlist (hence the following part about students anxiously awaiting for a seat to open up).

I got off the waitlist today!!!!!! YAY!!!! My first acceptance! It finally came. Good luck to everyone still waiting:luck: 🙂

I withdrew my acceptance (accepted back in October). It was a very difficult decision since I believe VCU is a great school. Good luck to you all!!!!!
