Can anybody that has been on an interview tell me how dangerous it is around AECOM?

My mother is worried that I will be robbed or beaten up if I go there for school (I think because a family friend just got beat up/mugged at a college he attends in the Bronx).

I am not a small guy so I would only be worried if there were gangs of people, guns or knives involved.
There's nothing to worry about. The area around the school is pretty decent. I thought the area near Montefiore Hospital was a bit sketchy but not too bad either.

Let's put it this way, I'm a white guy from a suburban Canadian city and I thought the neighborhood was more interesting than dangerous. It's really not as bad as some people make it out to be. If you are interested, look it up on google maps street-level view to get an idea of the area looks like.

I second THX, but with reservations. I am a short/relatively defenseless girl and came to AECOM during the night (~ 9 pm) via public transportation, meaning that I took the bus from the subway station. I was a little spooked at first, because I had no idea what to expect while waiting for the bus, but honestly everyone was just minding their own business. I don't know where you're from, but the only real difference between my hometown (Seattle) and the Bronx area is the ethnic makeup. Just don't be too noob/flashily dressed/inviting trouble, and I think you should be fine at night, and it is definitely okay during the day.

Well, but Ottawa is a "special" place. :meanie:

I know right?

I can interview wherever I want and do whatever I want because I am an adult (in age only though:laugh:). My mother was just warning me that the bronx is not manhattan.

BTW 4th meal rocks!

hahaha 🙂 Have you seen Gangs of New York movie? That's what it's like to live in Bronx these days

i recently sent a "in the area" email and got a reply saying that my applcn is still under consideration....what does this mean....do u guys think an LOI mite help at this point?? any input is appreciated...

To anyone that received an acceptance letter, did anyone receive a page where they could have the option for accepting a position in the class or rejecting the position in the class?

I only received an acceptance letter and a return envelope, but no page where I can check a box and sign my name. I was wondering if other people got the same thing or if AECOM forgot to send me something?

I imagine it has its terrible areas, but they're not near the school. I wandered at night through the area (to get from the school to my interviewer's office) and probably asked a half-dozen people for directions because I got unspeakably lost. Friendly enough people.

Apparently, the Bronx has changed quite a bit in the last decade, from gang central to a working-class neighborhood. *shrug*

This is an accurate assessment.

By the way, why were you walking to your interviewer's office at night?

it seems like they want you to jsut send in the deposit if you would like to accept the position......and do nothing if you want to reject it?

Rejected. Meh. Can't win 'em all 😛
First-post interview rejection which is surprising. Had a great interview here. Good luck to the rest of you!

Same. Interview felt fine, but not amazing. My weakest or second weakest interview, I think. Then again, I haven't been accepted to my strongest interview either. 🙁

What was that whooshing sound? Oh, that must have been my self-esteem plummeting. I hate this process.

Chad, my interviewer had an office in some nearby centre. Had to walk there - it was about fifteen minutes away. My interview ended at 5, I believe, so it was dark when I was leaving.

I got waitlisted, but it's not any better than a rejection. They said few are taken from the waitlist. I wonder if there's a "favorable waitlist" like they had years before...Sigh..Albert Einstein why do you hate me?

Sorry to hear that, V. Y'know, misery loves company (and we're in some good company here!)

Ah, that makes sense! I didn't know that they interviewed so late into the day (my interview was at like 9:45 or something). Sorry to hear about the outcome. 🙁

so do we all think that if we were accepted and do not want to accept the offer, we just ignore the letter?

No idea, but it never hurts to send an e-mail notification of withdrawal. I've done that so far at all of the schools I've withdrawn from and noone seemed to mind.

Just sent my letter of interest. I'm currently pre-interview. Hoping for one.

Anyone had any luck with that? They've replied acknowledging they have received my letter.

If you are convincing and hit the points that are important to the program/admissions committee, I'm sure they will consider you.

Received a letter today, accepted =).

Interviewed early October.

If we interviewed late November or later and they are still reviewing our applications, does anyone know when we can expect to hear back?

I had the same experience, and I've seen others speak of it as well with AECOM.

All I san say is that if I did it over again, I wouldn't change a single thing that I did or said.

No one knows how these places operate, and each is different.

I think that the one important thing to take from it is not to try to make radical changes to your game plan based on something like this.

As you said, you can't win them all.

I remember Dr. Irwin telling us that AECOM really likes non-traditional, non-science major kids. I don't know how much they weigh it, but that's what he said. He gave an example where a religious major is better looked upon at AECOM than a general bio major. Again, take it with a grain of salt.

Assuming that only a few get off the waitlist as someone mentioned, when does it become a waste of time interviewing at AECOM.
Does anyone who interview recently recall them mentioning how many seats have already been filled?

WWWWWWWWWAITlisted

sadface

i wonder how many come off the list- time to write!

Absolutely. I have no qualms about who I am or what I'm about. I was completely honest and congenial in my interview and that's how I'm always going to be. If I didn't match with the school, well then I didn't match. 🙂

lol i received even less... acceptance letter, no return envelope? i have no idea who to mail the deposit check to or to what address? no sheet either with any check boxes? do you have the address/who to make the check out to by any chance?

Mine came with a self-addressed envelope with a cute little red star stamped on it...??? But the Technical Standards, "sent under separate cover," is nowhere to be found.

thanks for the address, is the check just made out to AECOM? and yea i'm guessing "sent under a separate cover" means another envelope...

anyways i started an AECOM c/o 2013 thread for potential matriculants:

I was interviewed the 1st week of september and still haven't heard anything?! The lady I called said they still haven't decided...What kind of order are they deciding in?!

chad5871, thanks! i think it is going to be a really tough decision between einstein and ohio state u. i really loved both schools, but they are very different! i'm going to have to really think about where i would fit in better. either way i think i'll be really happy wherever i end up! 🙂

Congrats! I knew you'd make it! Is this your first choice among your acceptances now?

Hey jaywill, I interviewed in November and have not received anything either, maybe our interviewers were late submitting our evals?

yea, i guess could be a late submission of evals but it's just really frustrating cuz einstein is probably my #1 choice for a lot of different reasons so i'm really antsy...

So whats the deal with Yeshiva/Stern University? I hear Einstein takes an inordinate amount of applicants from this school, and a lot of people complain, including the professors there, that they are not as qualified as the other med students there?

Should I be worried about this? I'd like to think that my future school only accepts the best applicants available.

This kind of turns me off from this school.

I attended two lectures on my interview day - 1st and 2nd year. In 1st year class I saw quite a few students from Yeshiva (I assume that they were from Yeshiva because of the way they were dressed). At 2nd year lecture I didn't notice that many, but I wasn't exactly looking for them.
In general I don't mind Yeshiva students at Einstein. If they are not as good as the rest of the students...well, someone has to be on the bottom of the list. Other than that I don't see a reason to worry about them. I actually like Einstein's affiliation with Yeshiva because of the food in the cafeteria - it's Kosher, and I personally consider Kosher food to be of a higher quality and overall healthier.

I was told by my host that there are two kind of waitlists at Einstein. One is high priority, and most people are eventually accepted from it, and than there's a regular waitlist, and there isn't much movement on it.

well einstein is affiliated with yeshiva no? so it may be like Brown in that they take a lot of students from their own school, or at least have a few guaranteed spots of something like that..
but isn't stern the NYU business school?😕

im sure that like the student pool from any other undergrad institution, there are more qualified and less qualified students from yeshiva/stern.

yes, they are affiliated, and as such, i'd expect that they do accept a few more students from their affiliated undergrad than others, but you also have to expect that more undergrads from yeshiva&stern (both are undergraduate colleges of Yeshiva U, both affiliated w AECOM) would also apply to AECOM, and that could be the reason there are more matriculants from yeshiva/stern - way more applicants. or any combination of all that.

and the same thing might be happening at Brown... more applicants from one school means more matriculants. logically. no?

as far as Quack's claim that they are not as qualified and that people complain about it... i personally think its ridiculous that someone would claim the students of a certain school are "not as qualified" as other students, but if that does bother you, or if you're curious, a quick call to admissions might answer any questions you have about their admissions standards and whether or not they ever lower those standards. personally, i seriously doubt that a school with AECOM's good reputation accepts anybody they dont think is qualified just because of where they went for undergrad.

ar... NYU does also have a school called stern lol a lil confusing i guess

violet... i understand how you were trying to answer the prev post's q, but i can't say i agree with your assumption there. what exactly was it about these students that made u think they were all from yeshiva? were they wearing school swag or s/t? i mean there are Jewish kids in lots of other undergrad schools too, thats a really big assumption to guess they were all from one school, no?

good point... but there is quite a large percentage of orthodox jews in the student body i believe, quite a bit from yeshiva university and then from surrounding places.. (columbia ugrad has about a 20% jewish population as well i think)

whatever the demographic stats are, its kind of irrelevant because that orig poster mentioned ppl complaining that yeshiva students specifically were underqualified, not all orthodox jewish students. i dont know about you guys, but im really not comfortable debating eugenics, not here, not anywhere. :hijacked:

but like i said, i think the orig claim is ludicrous. i just cant imagine that AECOM would admit, for example, an applicant w/ lower GPA and MCAT just bc they went to the affiliated school. maybe if all things were =, but they are affiliated so that wouldnt be so surprising, nor would it lower my opinion of AECOM at all. or Brown, same thing there.

Is there anyone out there who really feels strongly (in a favorable way) about Einstein? If so, do you mind taking a moment to tell me some about why. I have been accepted and would really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you 🙂

hey bostonson, sorry for the news.

was it pre or post interview?

The only reason I assumed they were from Yeshiva is because they were religious (wearing kipas). But you are right, these students can be from institurions other than Yeshiva. I guess the proper way to phrase it would be that Einstein favors religious Jewish applicants, but I've also heard from different people on my interview day that the majority of them come from Yeshiva.
