As far as job opportunities in Tallahassee for spouses. Tallahassee is especially difficult for the mid/low level stuff or construction. I've had a roommate who has been searching forever. That being said, she has a masters in a music field so they don't think she can handle anything but music.

I know quite a few people with college degrees who DID get jobs relatively fast in Tallahassee. Sadly, with the nature of medicine and residency, you kind of have to look at it as a 2 or 4 year job opportunity. I've heard of people who had their significant other stay in Orlando or wherever else while they did their preclinical years and then did their rotations in that city because of very high paying jobs. It is miserable, but people have done it. It was also very worth it since the person made enough money that they were essentially debt free.

Thanks for the info. He is an Engineer and works for the FPL right now. He has been searching for jobs in all of the possible places I have gone to school but it is tough out there. We may have to do the long distance thing, but I am trying to avoid it at all costs!

I can't find any information on the open house anywhere on the COM website. I did a search in the box on the website itself, but the page it links me to is broken. Where do I need to go in order to register?

EDIT: Called and got the info.

I'm getting pretty excited about the open house this Saturday. I'm hoping I get the same sort of good feeling about the school I got when I interviewed. Of course, it's going to be great to meet a few of my potential classmates too!

I'm really excited, too. I'm on the wait list, but FSU is my #1 choice. I would go there in a heartbeat if accepted. I love it.

What's the dress code?
Does anyone know about how long Open House will last?

I'm going with semi-casual. Nice shoes, dark jeans, white button down and tie.

Follow my lead, SDN! Don't make me feel under dressed. The school is the inverse of pretentious, so I think I'll be good. 👍

Yes, Definitely wearing jeans... semi nice top. I think we will be okay.

Sorry to burst your bubbles but I will be in dress pants (maybe a skirt) and nice shoes and nice shirt. I'm trying to impress and I'm not sure if jeans are the way to do that :/ Secondly, seems that you guys are waitlisted like me, which open house did you all register for? I registered for the prospective student one (would have felt bad saying that I was accepted lol) If you all signed up for the other one, maybe I'll switch.

I feel pretty unprepared but the open house webpage on the FSU COM site is down for some reason. Can someone fill me in on what time it starts? I want to say 1pm but im not sure.
Thanks!

Perfectly understandable. Stuff is tough right now. The job market is odd in Tally. Gotta do what you gotta do.

To everyone else going to the open house, probably talked to you already. You're in the little meetings and I'm on my computer upstairs. Weeeeeeeeee. If you're on a waitlist then you probably talked to me. 😛

Where exactly are you? I'm here and would like to speak to u if at all possible 🙂

Hello all, this is actually my first post - I found out about this site late in the game - which suck for me, ha.

I interviewed on 3/22 and was wondering if anyone was interviewed then or the week before, and if so, whether they had been accepted or not.

My interviews went really, really well, both went well over the allotted time because we were engrossed in covo. To my shock, I was emailed on 4/7 saying that my application had been reviewed and that they had decided to put it 'on-hold' for further review later.

Does anyone have any experience with this situation? This is my first 'hold' response....has anyone been put on hold and subsequently accepted? Is there anything I can do to enhance my chances of being accepted? Is this another option that is different from waitlist, or, is this FSU's version of a waitlist? I guess what I mean by that is if they review my application in the following week are there only two options: accept or reject; or, conversely, are there three options: accept, reject, waitlist.....

Any help concerning this matter is much appreciated.

Ohh as for my stats: 31S, 3.7 GPA, science GPA is higher then cumulative, senior at Emory University, lots of clinical experience, research, volunteering, as well as extra curricular....

If those who have been accepted are comfortable with it, I'd greatly appreciate info on what your stats are....

Best,

Nick.

I was the 6'5" 270 lbs guy with glasses and a fsu com polo. Hard to miss such a handsome fellow like myself.

By the way, I DID hear from admin people they are ranking the waitlist this year for the first time. Evidently, the class filled much faster than anticipated and they are waiting to see who dodges out now.

Open house was great. I am so so so excited to start.

I thought I saw you wandering around there with someone. I wasn't going to go up and introduce myself, be wrong in my assumption and get a blank stare though. 😛

Haha I thought the same thing :d

Haha now I'm extra glad I didn't say hi 🙂

I will be around all summer, so you'll have your chance either way. I'm friends with most of the TA's for anatomy and I may even talk to the anatomy professor about helping out just for fun. The anatomy class as a radiology component and they invented a thing called "radsim" which is essentially various images with quizzes and stuff but I felt that outside of memorizing those images for tests, it really didn't teach one to objectively look at a radiological image. So, I might see if I could do a weekly or bi-monthly session to go into greater depth and develop more refined skills for those who are interested.

I withdrew my acceptance from FSU COM today. Loved the school but the location is unfeasible for me. I hope one of you all get my seat! Good luck!

Its ok. I won't hold it against you. 😉 I found it was always tough to withdraw an acceptance from another school even with getting into my top choice. Location is a perfectly acceptable reason. Realistically, it is why FSU was my top choice with my parents only 30 minutes away, I get a pretty nice support system!

Hey,
Does anybody know if there is a difference between "Hold, under review by addmissions committee" and "wait list"?

Did people get emails about being on a high priority wait list?

Thanks!

You can email Dana about where you stand and she will tell you. I also found out that they are expecting to accept 65 applicants off of the "under review" list (which is their unranked waitlist). They will be reviewing updates so be sure to send them if you have them. Good luck everyone. (and to myself as well)

They seemed to have changed things a bit this year. I was told this was the first time they directly started ranking people on the waitlist. Also, when I was on the list it was considered the "hold" or whatever. Last year they told me it was just a nicer way of saying it was a waitlist. After May 15 you will see the biggest movement. It will actually become a bit more of a frenzy within the week after.

Thank you guys! I hope we all here from FSU soon! so people on hold/waitlist--- do you know where you stand? Like top 1/3 or any sort of ranking!

I really liked the open house, it was nice to talk to you MossPoh! I like hearing about wait listers that got into their top choice!

No problemo. Might've been hard to believe there, but I honestly am not much of a talker. My voice was shot by the end of the day. 😛

Thank you!! 🙂 I know it'd be great if they had enough seats for everyone who wanted to go there, but for those who are on the waitlist (AKA me!) it's great when the outright accepted people make their decisions early! 🙂 I hope the others who might be somewhat indecisive will make their decision sooner than later!

Do u know when they were expecting to accept 65?

got interview invites from everywhere in florida except FSU....strange but it's okay.

oh well, just more reason for a gator to hate the noles 😉
congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those waiting!

It's actually probably better for those of us who are wait listed if the people who are outright accepted but don't wish to attend hold their seats until all the interviews are over. I would imagine that if someone gave up their seat while interviews were still in progress, it might just mean that another seat would be open for a current interviewee rather than someone on the wait list. But there's no way of knowing. And I'm not sure when the last interview was. It was probably last week anyway, since the April 15th deadline is this Thursday.

Of course, it would be ideal if everyone who wanted to attend was able to do so. Good luck to everyone! 🙂

Medical admissions are weird in general. FSU does tend to search for a slightly different applicant than the other schools in Florida. I had a friend who had interviews at Pitt, Wash U., UPenn and Mayo amongst others and never got an interview at Nova or Miami. (He really wanted to stay in south florida)

Also, if you are on the waitlist, don't harass people who have an acceptance and who are trying to make a decision. I remember last year I even got PMs on sdn asking me to decide so they could move on the waitlist. For one thing, I put a different tone to that than is intended. The other thing is that it simply made me hold off longer because I was kind of irritated and wanted to spite them a bit for being rude. 😛

I called to ask about my position on the waitlist but the lady said that they r not telling ppl this info. How do I find out bcuz it seeems otheres have.

If you talked to the right person and they said they weren't giving it out then there is no other way. As I recall, Dana prefered email for status updates. I might be wrong though. It HAS been over a year. The ranking may also be simply with people "on deck" so to speak and everybody else is going through the standard path.

MossPoh

What do you mean by ON DECK?

Should we expect to see any waitlist movement April 15th?

Thank you!

On deck, as in, the most immediate ones they'd go to if someone ditches an acceptance. It'd be really cumbersome to rank EVERY person and since they were still interviewing, it'd be constantly shifting. (I saw people interviewing yesterday, i.e. Monday)

I wouldn't personally expect to see the movement instantaneously on the 15th. If that is the day they have to be notified by, then I'd expect a few days after to really be when it picks up in pace. We did get an email about cleaning stuff out of the LCs so the current second years can study for boards while you guys move into your LCs upstairs.

Officially withdrew today. It was the right decision, tough as it may have been. Thanks for all the help and info Mosspoh, you provided a bigger service to the FSUCOM than you probably realize.

You're quite welcome. Thank you for the compliments and best of luck with everything! You gotta do what you feel is right. As much as I'd like everyone I talk to to come here, I do know that every person has different needs/demands that only certain schools can provide them. You have to be happy and excited where you go. If you aren't, then those times when you are stressed and miserable become that much worse because you picked for the wrong reasons.

Got the On Hold email today. At least, I might not have to wait as long as the other schools to hear the final decision. Good Luck everyone! Hoping for some movement 😀:xf:

It sucks to get that email. I remember the slight sinking feeling I had. I did have a few acceptances in the bank at DO schools, but doesn't change that feeling! When did you interview here?

I just withdrew my acceptance from FSU COM. Good luck to everyone!

Does anyone (Mosspoh) know how much time is spent in lecture per day first year?

Does anyone (Mosspoh) know how much time is spent in lecture per day first year?

We don't have mandatory attendance, so as little or as much as you'd like. It is easier to just list off my current schedule this semester. I don't go to a lot of lectures though. We do video record everything now, so many people will go study on their own and then watch it at double speed later on.

Monday: Biochem 1-2
Physio 2-4 or 4:30ish. Never really starts at 2 and we get a 10 minute break sometimes

Tuesday: Doctoring 7:45 a.m. - 9 a.m.
Doctoring small group (required) 9-10:30 (They also have a 10:30-12 group you could be assigned)
Biochem: 1-2
Biochem Small group (required): 2-3
Physio small group (required): 2-4:30 or completion

Wednesday: Same as Monday, but you may have CLC anytime between 7:45 a.m. and 9:45 (or something) as well.

Thursday: My CLC at 7:45 a.m.
Biochem: 1-2
Biochem/Physio Quiz review sessions

Friday: Quiz: 12:45
Biochem: 1:15 to 2:15ish
Physio: 2:15 till 4 or 4:30ish

As you can see, the schedule doesn't look that bad. It gets much more complicated though because of alternating between CLC and preceptorship second semester. There also always seems to be some mandatory session or meeting that pops up and throws a wrench in your day.

Every semester is different, but they all have about the same kind of time distribution. The profs will also change classes or double up lectures occasionally, as is what happened today. Rather than a normal review session, we simply knocked down two class. Tomorrow all we have to do is take the quiz and then we can leave. (We have Gala which is like med school prom)

Next week is pretty much all review sessions with a few physio lectures thrown in and an exam on Friday. We then have our FOSCE (Formative Objective Structured Clinical Exam....I think) the Monday or Tuesday after the exam. Have to score a 75 or above to "pass". If you don't then you simply do a 1 week remediation thing before summer clinical practicum. The rest of that week is completely free for us to study for the NBME exams or "shelfs".

Second year is where the game is stepped up quite a bit. You go from having the 2 classes in summer, 3 in fall and 3 in spring to have 6 classes the entire year. Also, rather than your day being afternoon centric, it becomes lectures in the morning and doctoring or free time in the afternoon. They seem to generally build the time usage to be more efficient for the second year students because of the load.

No problemo. First year, particularly if you already had a strong science background, has a lot of free time. It is because of your lighter course load than most places but also because the tests are every 4 weeks (usually). Many people (not me) are very good at just putting in tons of hours the last week and doing well on the exam.

I've heard of people in years past who have actually had flexible part time jobs, usually something like tutoring or teaching kaplan. One of my friends went here for undergrad and gets shifts at a store in the mall every now and then. He is also one of the smartest people in the class and seems to soak up 90% of the information after briefly skimming it, but that is besides the point....kinda. The free time allows you to be very active with organizations which is definitely encouraged by the admin. The only time where you are not is if you're on academic probation, which is a C average and even then I THINK it is only leadership positions you aren't allowed to hold.

MossPoh is right about the admission status. They wont give it to you on the phone, you have to e-mail Dana. Be ready for good or bad news.

Anyway, I sent in another update and contacted one of my interviewers. I'm pushing hard since I found out my status wasn't so good. Maybe pushing too hard, but I figure there isn't much harm I can do if I'm low on the list. From the bottom, the only direction is up up up!

It is also good to see that there are some seats opening. Congrats to the people that got multiple acceptances and thank you for telling the med schools earlier instead of later. Gracias.

Well, time to sit back, cross my fingers, hang a horseshoe and wait. I've updated like, 4 times and I don't want to become annoying haha. What more is there to do? 🙂
