Various posters in this thread indicated that Tuesday was ADCOM meeting day normally. Last week they were off for Spring Break. Tonight the status website was down for 30 min. My status did not change...still pending....

Anyone see movement today?

FSU matchlist is released. Very solid. Nice spread of stuff and nearly everyone I talked to got their number 1 choice, which is the most important thing.

I watched it. So exciting. I'm so pumped to start.

Yea. I think the admin is relatively happy with the results. They liked that so many people went into peds/obgyn/IM, even though they know that many of those IM people will probably pursue subspecialities. It still works for their proposed mission. I think it says a lot for such a new school to be able to consistently put people into Radiology, Derm, Radiation Oncology, etc. if they still want it. For example, while we don't have any surgeons on faculty AT the actual COM building, many of the community surgeons who are technically still considered FSUCOM faculty will bend over backwards to introduce you early on to the field. Last fall I got an open invitation to be put on the call list and get to scrub/observe the local orthopod group. Scrubbing in was conditional on whether a student further ahead was rotating or not since they get first priority.

Also, 2 of the people that matched radiology did it as couples match, which magnifies it expoentially AND 2 of the anesthesiology at vanderbilt were couples match as well. The fact that a program like vandy would take two from the same little college of med says a lot about the quality. They were also stellar students. (I know one of them personally)

Hey Guys,

This is my first post 😉 I was wondering if you all could clarify this email that FSU sent me. I think I am accepted, but technically not accepted. This would be my first acceptance of the season! I was just wondering if I should still update with FSU or does this email mean that I am already accepted?

"Although your current status with regard to acceptance at the FSU College of Medicine is on “Hold”, we do not want you to interpret that as meaning that you are unlikely to be accepted into the Class of 2014. Our past history indicates that we will likely make well over fifty more offers of acceptance before we complete our cycle, and your application is included in that group. Indeed, we are happy to let you know that your application has been ranked highly enough that we fully anticipate that you will be offered a position in the class in the near future.
We hope that this message will clarify the situation and will allay concerns about your status with FSU. We also hope that you will continue to keep FSU College of Medicine in consideration for your educational plans. Please let us know if you have any questions concerning this or other matters relating to FSU COM, and thank you for your continuing interest in our program."

Thank you for your responses!

p.s. I interview Feb. 12th.

MasterTSP, I received this email as well. I interviewed on 2/15. I am not sure what to make of it, but I really doubt they send this email to EVERYONE on hold. I would think it would only come back to hurt them in the end since they cannot accept everyone. I don't know anything for sure, but I am guessing they don't send this to everyone and it sounds like they don't based on some responses but who knows?! This process is so crazy. Anyway, just thought I would let you know my thoughts. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear from FSU!

If I see the woman whom runs a lot of the interview stuff tomorrow then I will ask her how late they interview. May or may not tell me and I may or may not see her.

That would be awesome! Thanks!

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew of any nice, quiet, and reasonably priced 2 Bedroom apartments near the med school? Thanks in advance.

Just look around. Housing is easy to find and your concept of near may be very different than someone else's. Generally, proximity, how new it is and size will all raise the price....of course. Most 1 br apartments walking distance to campus are about 500+. Usually you can add on about 250+ for that second room.

If there is one thing that is for certain, there is no shortage of housing in Tallahassee. Living real close to the med school may suck depending on you. It sounds like an awesome idea, but sometimes you just want your life separate from school and to not see it everytime you walk out of your building.

Ok so what's the deal with FSU??? Complete October 5 and still nothing. Can they just make a decision to either reject or give me an interview, this is getting ridiculous.

Same here...complete in Nov though.

Has anybody been accepted off of the hold list yet?

Different schools do things differently. Unless there is absolutely no chance (as in 2.8 with 15 MCAT kind of stuff) they wait until all spots are filled and interviews done before sending out rejections. It sucks because you are waiting to hear, but it is good because it means your app is still getting reviewed over usually. I had a few of those when i applied and I called one school and asked about it and they told me that they wanted me to give them updates, which would've been nice to know ahead of time. Another school (NYMC) send me my rejection letter during the last week of anatomy during the summer. I especially liked that one since my dad went there, was top 3 in his class and has consistently donated money to them. Yet they didn't even humor me with an interview or rejection letter within a reasonable time.

Frustrating and I wouldn't give up hope completely, but I also would be mentally prepared for a rejection. Then if you get an interview, it is even more exciting. 😛

Why would they interview someone with a 2.8 GPA and 15 MCAT?

It was a dull point evidently, but one none-the-less.

Anyway, I'll be doing tours and what not during the open house near the end of the day for anyone that is coming. Heads up for where the party is at.

Do people on the waitlist come to the open house? Will coming help moe them up the waitlist?

Is the April 15th deadline for FSU COM strictly enforced, because most other schools are May 15th?

The april 15 is strictly enforced. Other schools don't start at the end of may and beginning of june.

Personally, I think showing up to the open house is good if you are truly interested in the school. If you have the capability to do such, the time to do such and really want to go there, then why wouldn't you head on over? What harm could it do?

Thank you. I am very interested in FSU COM. I just want to know if the admissions committee will even know that I am so interested just by going to the open house. I have seen the COM on my interview day and really liked everything about it.

What would you suggest someone on the FSU COM waitlist do to improve their chances?

Well, make yourself known. If you see a person you interviewed with go up and talk to them. Be nice to everyone. Introduce yourself to people and be a kind and gregarious person. Good things tend to happen to people who try. The absolute worst thing that could happen is that it doesn't change a thing. If there were a game in vegas where I could put down money and win the jackpot or keep my money if I lose, I'd play it every time.

FSUCOM wants people who WANT to be there. That is what makes our classes gel as well as they do. We don't have many people who went there simply because it was their only option.

I make no guarentees. 😉 As I said before though, all you can do is try.

I lived 30 min away as an undergrad and it sucked. I wasted 1 hour a day just driving. If I go home then Im too lazy to go back on campus or my friends' apt. I look forward to be able to walk to campus 😀

I will be there!!

Do you know if parking will be a problem since FSU has a spring game on the same day April 10?

If there is a game that day then they sometimes block off that parking garage next to the med school/bio building. you can assume that parking might be bad. however, it depends on the time. If the spring game is at night, it wont be a problem.

I'm not sure. There is an alumni thing that day too. I'd leave plenty of time to find a spot. While they make the garnet-gold game a bit of a festival, it still isn't near the level of a regular football game I don't think. Usually that garage by the bio building is blocked off during fall for boosters. Honestly, I'd find it kind of obscene to do it for the friggin spring game. I'd expect the worst though, especially since people will want to make it a big deal that it is Jimbo's first spring game deal as head coach.

I lived walking distance to FSU campus when I first got here and it was both good and bad. I honestly did A LOT less work when I lived walking distance since I never really scheduled my time as well, or follow the faint schedule I had.

So where should I park on Saturday? Assuming that the garage behind the college is blocked off. I havent familiar myself to FSU campus yet so I have no idea. Do they give out parking ticket on the weekend. If not then I can park anywhere, right?

I found a link that said the Spring Game start at 5pm but there are other events going on earlier in the day.

locus, on weekends you can pretty much park anywhere without much effort and you won't get a ticket. The garage behind the med school should be accessible, unless they are blocking it off for the event, which I haven't heard about. Anyways, if it is blocked just search around the area a little (shouldnt take too long) and you will find some parking.

I will be attending the open house as well, but I haven't gotten an email about it yet. Does anybody know what time it starts and where we will be meeting?

Just got invited for an interview for April 19th. I'm going to withdraw though. Been complete there since 11/18.

Doors open @ 12:30PM, Open House starts at 1:00PM. The meeting place is in the atrium of the COM building.

I have a quick question for MossPoh: did you ever recieve any emails from FSU after you got waitlisted (post-interview)? I've seen that a few people here have been basically told that they'll get a spot if they wait. Were you in that category? I have already sent them a letter updating them on my current activities (last month). I'll be attending the open house this weekend, and I'll probably send another letter this month as well. Acceptance here is probably my best shot at getting into a US Allopathic this cycle, and I'm trying to do as much as I can to move my name into the accepted list. Is there still hope for me?

FSU
You want me to decide by April 15th but you have not sent me my finacial aid package. What the what?!

Well, what do you need to know? They don't really do individual scholarships but they do give random 1000 dollar grants and stuff to people who fill out fafsa early and what not.

It is by far the cheapest school in Florida and either in the top 10 or top 15 cheapest in the US as of last year. (May change a bit since then) They have all of the financial information on the website as well. I don't recall ever actually receiving a "packet" from them, but I did get accepted about 3 days before orientation...

And the above wasn't intended to be a snarky in any way.

I was not told much of anything. I'm pretty sure I was borderline annoying them with my updates. I wanted them to know that I would unquestionably go there if accepted. My general understanding is that they don't really "rank" applicants. They go through every week or every other week and re-review whatever was given to them. So, if you update your file with what you've been doing whether it is working or saving orphans, they will see that on top of all the other stuff. I had much lower numbers than a lot of people. I'm a middle class white guy. I know people who were exactly the same as me AND had higher numbers. I got accepted over them. I don't think I'm better in any way, but I do think showing you care and are driven can go a longggg way. Growing up in a rural area and being a resident of a rural area probably helped too...

It is still a mystery to me how I got in. I've proven I can hang with the best of them now, but before hand I defintely beat the odds. The ONLY thing I can think really distinguished me from others....caring. FSU wasn't a notch on my belt type of acceptance. It was where I wanted to be and where was right for me.

So, long story short. Update them with noteable things. You will probably not hear much. Be patient and hope for the best, but expect the worst.

Thanks! I actually just checked and the package was posted there. I just wasn't notified when it was ready I guess. Do you have a link to the website where they have the cost of attendance listed? Or do you know the breakdown. I guess I was lucky enough to receive one of those random grants.

hey TakeMe,
Where have you decieded to go? FSU COM?

Has anyone been moved from the waitlist recently?

Will people start moving April 15th?

Just got invited for an interview for April 19th. I'm going to withdraw though. Been complete there since 11/18.

Allie1361- Why would you withdraw now? After you put all that work into writing the FSU secondaries, they liked you enough to invite you. You wanted to hear back from them. I believe it has taken FSU COM that long to process the secondary applications because of the large number of applicatants. I think you should reconsider. You don't what FSU has to offer until you go see it. It is a great place and it may be a perfect fit for you. 🙂

I am undecided, making a decision soon. If I had to call it, I would say I will end up at USF next year (better job opportunities for my husband), unless their is a significant tuition difference. I am still figuring it out (and CANNOt for the life of me find out how much the tuition is at FSU). Anyone have this info???? I have scoured the website.

I've no doubts that FSU is a great school, but I was accepted to USF's med school, which is my top choice and where I'm currently attending school and I love Tampa, so I wouldn't go to FSU over USF. Why take an interview spot from someone else who's top choice is FSU?
