Congrats!!

did you get the email saying it was ok to call?

Based on my own experience, If you are out of committee 2/16, your decision should be available after 3/15. Best of Luck! 🙂

I called at the exact moment when Ms Walk clicked "send" for the "it's okay to call" email. She was like... how do you know? I just sent literally one second ago!?

I am psychic

ksyl08 and almosttthere! Very excited for you two! I interviewed Jan 26th. So, I have to wait a bit I think to get my letter that heads "call" 🙂 cant wait.. I am being pressured by another university to make my decision by March 1st, but I am waiting for Howard..

From what I remember during our interview date, Ms. Walk mentioned some of us will go on committee on 1/15, and some will be on 2/15. mine was on 1/15, and I got the "out of committee" email on 1/22... so I guess you prob won't hear back until 2/20s... yea, the waiting sucks. Although i am out of committee, I am still waiting for the "it's okay to call now" email... 😴

I was told that the committee meets on Thursday's. 2/15 was a Monday. So, how is it that some people will go on committee on 2/15??? I thought 2/15 was the day the letters were signed, not the day that the committee meets...

oh ok I'll just wait it out. She said at my interview that we will know by 2/15 and the out of committee email said by the end of the week so I was just curious if I missed an ok to call email.

yeah the committee meets regularly and decisions are supposed compiled and sent out on the 15th.

Thanks Curie, which other school are you considering if you don't mind me asking... I am still waiting on a couple of other schools as well.

FutureMed1, my interview date was 1/12, which was very close to the committee meeting (I was told that committee was going to meet on 1/15)... that's why some of us didn't make it that month. I am not sure if they meet on the 15th every month, but letters are signed on the 15th every month.

ahhh the 15 was a thurs in jan. The next meeting should have been that next week thurs.

congrats again to those accepted!! Hoping to join 🙂

edit: it was a friday...my poor brain is tired lol.

I got into Ross University last August but differed my matriculation till May of this year because I really want to go to Howard. I actually did not apply to too many schools. But, now that the time is coming close, Ross is demanding a decision by end of this month for me to join their May session. Hopefully things will work out soon.

Yea Curie choose Howard, I hope you get in, it would be nice to stay in the states. Good luck to the rest waiting.

Wow this thread hit 23 pages wow! last years thread I think only hit 15!

I hope so too. One of the reasons I chose to stay back is because I am eligible to apply for NHCS only if I go to a U.S. based school. Although the U.S. govt will pay if I chose to go to Ross, I will not be eligible for the scholarship. If I don't get into Howard, my regret will be that I gave up more than a Year worth of medical school. If I had gone to Ross, then I would have been back in to the U.S. by the end of this year and had taken my USMLE 1 by March of 2011. given my age, time is extremely valuable, especially when I am a single mother. So, I pray to God that it works out. At any rate, I will have the satisfaction that I had tried my best. About 7 years ago, I had an argument with a friend of mine, and I told him not to 'Judge a book by its cover' and I told him that I was going to go to Howard. Besides, I like the idea of standing up to those who oppress. Hence the fact that 8 people stood up after the civil war and fought for their right to stand for what they believe in really intrigues me. (maybe its my age talking) 🙂 So, maybe, God willing, I will be able to keep my word 😉 I also did not apply to any schools outside of U.S. except for Ross.

Has anyone ever received an acceptance letter without receiving an e-mail to call first?

looking at this and last year's thread I would say no, but you never know what's going on with the non posters. Good luck! This waitng is killing me.

Dear Class of 2014,

I pray that this message reaches all of you in good spirits. I am currently a M1 at Howard University. I absolutely love my choice to make Howard my home. We are currently doing the neuroanatomy block which is extremely difficult but we are making it through.

You all will not regret your decision to come to Howard University. The atmosphere is so supportive and my classmates/peers are awesome. Any medical school that you attend will be difficult, just make sure that you are supported where you are.

I can honestly say that I love my medical school and am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be here. Let me know if you have any questions about the first year here at Howard. The only question that I can not answer is when you will hear back from the admissions committee.

If you have interviewed at Howard, it means that they want you here. Make sure to let them know that you want to be here. For those of you that are accepted CONGRATS!!!!!!! I still remember the day that I got the e-mail, and it was life changing. Welcome to the family.

Thanks beerrog, I got a question how did you deal with the whole housing thingy. I feel like I'm slacking on that part, I don't know what I should be doing at what point, you feel me. Thanks.

A lot of M1s stay at the University Towers Center in Hyattsville, MD. About 12 of us. It is safe, close to the metro, and they have study rooms and free printing. (about 20 minute metro ride)

There are also a lot of people (about 15) that stay in the towers dorm/apartment on campus. I would just say, go by and look at it before signing the papers. Some people prefer staying on campus over comfort. Which is also important.

You can stay at both of these places without a car. Although, having a car is always easier.

Many people also found their places on Craig's list. Although you should look at the place physically before signing on the dotted line.

The earlier you decide on housing the better. That being said, some of my friends got in off the wait list in July and they still found housing. So, if you know you are going to be here @ Howard then I would say start actively looking March/April. That will give you plenty of time to decide.

The things is, you don't want to stay too FAR away from DC. Staying close to a metro stop if the best thing. Just because parking is not that great around campus. You can however get a parking pass by entering the lottery which is not hard. Commuting on the metro is easy and pretty safe. Just know that the metro stops at midnight during the week. I am a late studyer so sometime I am at the medical school all night, especially on exam weekends. Just some food for thought.

I'm hoping to stay in the towers on campus. What do the students who stay there think of the place? Does the apartments come furnished? You sound a little hesitant about suggested that we sign up you for campus housing.

I love DC and I love Howard and that is exactly why I am having trouble deciding where to go. Maybe current students might be able to help me with this. Do you like the curriculum? Do they have good clinical skills program like standardized or sim patients? When choosing medical school, it is very important that I choose a school that is fun and supportive but at the same time I need to know that it will prepare me well for residency. Help!!!!!!!!!

Does not matter where you go, Med school is going to be very difficult. Its all up to you how you want to prepare for your residency. For instance, people who go to the Caribbean or come from foreign country actually have to score much higher than U.S. students to get the same post. People who go to Caribbean for example are considered to be U.S. rejects and for the most part it is a true statement. 80% of them usually get into residency programs right after their graduation. However, for the same primary care position, a U.S. degree holder only needs 70 percentile whereas a foreign graduate needs at least 80 for their application to be even considered. And yet, they are looked down upon during residency not because of their abilities but form where they have gotten their degree. My point is: when it comes to medical school how you prepare for residency, is all up to you.

I have finished all of my interviews and been accepted to most of my schools and I have heard NOTHING from Howard since I submitted my secondary in October? Am I missing something here?

No. They just haven't decided whether or not they would like to interview you. But you're not alone. They haven't decided on 5000+ applications. And most likely if they decide not to extend an interview to you they won't let you know. I'm still convinced Howard doesn't do pre-interview rejections. They just leave ya hangin' butt nekkid in the wind. And for this, I am sad.

I'm in the same boat - I've been complete since 10/5. I recently called the admissions office and they said they will be offering interviews up until the 2nd week of March. They typically do not send out rejection letters until after the class is completely filled at the end of April / beginning of May. At that point, if people decline their acceptances, they could potentially have a few more interview slots late into spring; however, applicants shouldn't bank on that. Although I'm not an URM, I really like Howard and would definitely go here if accepted. I met Ms. Walk and a few med students during a tour in November and thought it was a great atmosphere. I guess it's going to come down to the next couple of weeks :xf:

hey guys,

in case this helps anyone with time lines:

sent in application: December 2009

interviewed 1/12

went to committee 1/28 (didn't get out of committee email)

letter typed 2/17 (signed a day or two later)

OK to call email 2/23

Thanks for taking the time to write to us Beerog even while you're crazy busy with med school madness! I thought April might be too early to look for housing, just because most people posting ads for rentals are looking to rent to someone immediately, and want someone to sign a lease for the same month they inquire. I was thinking of heading out in June to look at housing... what about the rest of y'all?

Hey?

Anyone else not heard ANYTHING from Howard since December?

What is their policy on update letters? 😕

I honestly like it there and want to go, but idk how great of a shot I have as an international student...

I haven't heard anything since OCTOBER and had some trouble getting in contact with them to see if my application is complete..... I've basically given up on Howard

At this rate I think I'm just going to take the L on this one...really sad though...🙁

Congrats to those who've been accepted. I guess HU wasn't meant to be 😕

There are about 15 people in our class that do stay at the towers on campus. Both the towers on campus and UTC are fully furnished.

The towers on campus is a dorm/suite, and for some people that is not going to work for them. The conditions are not terrible, and many people find it easy to just walk across the street for class. That being said, some people also are renting homes that are in walking distance.

For me, I just enjoy the smaller town atmosphere of Hyattsville, MD. And it is a very short metro ride right into the city for school. It is also a convenient drive.

Thanks Lostm45 and hope4smiles 🙂 For those who are waiting, have faith. its not over yet! 🙂

CONGRATS on those accepted!!!!! Go join the Face book page!!!!! YEA!!!!!!!

I just created an account just to say that two guys (Kevin and Gabriel) I met during my interview are really HOTT😍😍😍. I have a major crush especially on Gabriel..he betta watch out.😎

After watching from the sidelines for an eternity, I joined SDN only so I could find out where people stay during interviews to Howard. I'm flying into Reagan National and my return flight is at 5:59pm on the 9th. I was considering Bloomingdale Inn because it is close to HUCM. Can Howard hold a small travel bag for you on interview day? It would make it so much easier to hit the airport stretch after the day is over rather than return to the hotel! Any advice/pointers? Also (I feel so 'Palin-esque' starting a sentence with 'also'), can interviewees use the Howard shuttle bus?

On a totally unrelated subject, is HUMC interviewing for the waitlist at this point or are there some real spots up for grabs this late in the game? I absolutely love the school, but I feel like I have been hard-riding the 'waitlist express' this interview season...I need something to stick and Howard was my first choice...but ironicaly, my last interview. Feel free to chime in as necessary.

What is the rent like where you are staying, Beerog? Can a brother pull off an existence on a budget of $1300 a month? I'm gonna skimp on stuff really hard and was wondering if $1300 was reasonable for DC life? Please advice.

Yeah, I saw people with their bags the day of my interview, I'm sure they know people travel and are not going to throw you out for having your bags with you. The interview is laid back, just be yourself I think they just wanna see that you are who your application says you are. By that I mean not "crazy" if you interview there you have a great shot! Just don't say something strange like " I hate old people" and you'll be fine. Good luck to you, hopefully we become classmates!

When did you get the "ok to call" e-mail?

Hi FutureMed1, I did get "ok to call" e-mail and when I called I was told that my letter has been signed. I was told that I got in, however, I have not received anything in the mail yet.

Hi curie, thanks but my question was WHEN did you get the "ok to call e-mail" (date wise)?

still waiting for interview invite.. u would think that after completing the smdep programhere u would at least get an interview...ugh, hu dont let me down🙁

I was wondering if there are any SDNers interviewing on Mar 9. I'd love to get together the night before/day after/at the airport waiting lounge and just chat. I've met some really nice folks on the interview trail and I know that even if we don't all end up at the same school, it was very much worth meeting them. I haven't booked a hotel room yet so I'll choose my overnight abode depending on the feedback I get from this post. Let me know and good luck to all of you. Howard is a great school given my drive for community value so any face-time with others who have similar inspiration would be a great honor.😀

Out of curiosity, is he a 1st year?
