I too received an email a few days ago stating that I'm a Super Alternate due to the large number of students currently accepting their offer of admission. I interviewed early March and was out of committee sometime around the end of the month.

Congrats to all those who have been accepted! And much luck and patience to all of us waiting!:luck:

I received an e-mail a few days ago stating that I am a "Super Alternate". I interviewed in early February.

Hey, congrats on Howard!...this might help - I saw this on the AAMC link that was sent out by AMCAS via email today:

"By May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), April 30 for MD-PhD programs, each applicant who has received an offer of acceptance from more than one school or program choose the specific school or program at which the applicant prefers to enroll and withdraw his or her application, by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods, from all other schools or programs from which acceptance offers have been received."

http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/applicants.htm

Thanks. I'm sure you guys have good news on the way.

Yeah the 15 the of this month is what I pretty much had in my head. But it's just that I haven't heard anything about financial aid or confirmation for orientation and things that would settle my uneasiness with letting go all of my other options.

I guess maybe I'm paranoid. And just hoping for the comfort of others doing the same before I give up all my options. I'm set on Howard. I just don't want any cold feet or surprises.

And forgive me. For you all waiting. For this type of speculation. I feel very fortunate to be here. And will give my best to you all as future friends/colleagues.

Has anybody that interviewed in late Febraury/early March heard anything? This wait is killing me!!

did you get an ''out of committee'' mail first?

I did. I interviewed during early February, received the "out of committee" e-mail in mid-March and learned of my "Super Alternate" status a couple weeks after that. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know what the names of the people in the admissions office are? I want to call and find out about my status since i havent heard anything yet and think it would be helpful to know who to call besides ms walk if she isnt available. thanks!

Y'know, funny enough, everytime I call no one gives their name! Maybe it's because they have student workers who aren't really all that regular. You might be able to find someone in the directory on the school's website.

strange.
everytime i call its either ms. jones or ms. walk

ms. jones is usually the first person to pick up the main admissions phone

you know the only thing i wonder is:

what if someone was completely missing-in-action and couldn't select their ''1 school'' by the 15th. does that mean they get kicked out of all the application pools??? or do they remain in all of them??

I believe they remain on all of them and are required to submit a deposit to all of them. That's a hefty chunk of change to miss out on to only attend one school in the end. That's more incentive to make that tough decision.

Maybe it's more of a polite agreement. I read somewhere that schools can see if your registered to attend or something after May 15th. But to do that you have to have paid whatever deposit for a seat. And if you transgress their deadline you won't get it back. So most people will know if they're coming to DC by June. Plenty of time to move and get ready. And we pray the few poor souls waiting later than that.

yea but what if they dont send in the money?
do they get kicked off the list?

I assume you get kicked off the list if you don't send them the money after a certain date. Howard gives you 30 days after acceptance to send in the deposit before April 15th, but I'm not sure how much time you have to send it in after the 15th deadline. If they accept someone right before April 15th, I'm sure they give that person at least a little while to respond.

I am assuming that if we don't get an interview invite by the end of this week from Howard, then I should start thinking about the next app cycle?

When I had called in, the admissions office mentioned that last week was the 'final week' for interview invitations to go out. :/

Is there anyone that interviewed in early March (2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, etc) that's gotten the out of committee email notice?
I heard from someone that interviewed on the 9th that they would be going to committee this week. Since letters get signed on the 15th, I was wondering if anyone had received the 'out of committee' email yet.

I actually talked to Ms. Walk on Thursday and she told me I went to committee a couple of weeks ago (I interviewed March 2nd). Hope that helps!

So I guess that means you never got the out of committee email, right? In your Thursday conversation, did you learn anything that can clarify the fate of the 'waiting faithful'? I'm very optimistic but I'm not sure that there will be an avalanche of admitted candidates giving up their spots this early. Since letters get signed on the 15th, and there are at least a handful of 'Super Alternates' out there, it might be a long hard wait for the 'waiting faithful'...lol. Share your tidbits Sistadoc and ease a brotha's mullings...lol

Well, she told me they weren't sending letters out on the 15th anymore. They're just going to send them out when people withdraw their acceptance (or at least that's what I took from it). However, I do believe that last week was the final week for people to say "yay or nay" to Howard. She said something about my letter being ready but she couldn't tell me what it said because it wasn't signed (whatever that means). So yeah that was pretty much the extent...hope that was helpful!

And no, I never got the "out of committee" email either

That significantly eases a brotha's mullings..lol. Thanks for the heads up. If I could just indulge you in an optimistic thought...I think you are going to get good news😉
Usually if it is anything else, you would get an email. Since no one here in recent memory has waited for a signed letter that announces rejection, you should be in good stead (unless you threw rocks and rotten projectiles at the building as you exited the interview venue...which you assuredly did not!!!). Besides, at least a few other posters that interviewed at around the same time have gotten the 'Super Alternate' email. I'd be sit'n pretty where you are if I were you!! Good luck all the same!

Hello! Yep. I interviewed March 2nd. I got an 'out of committee & letter waiting to be signed' email March 26th, and I got an email March 29th for 'Super Alternate' due to a large number of students currently accepting their offer of admission. Hope that helps...spreading the hope that some of us will hear good news this week and soon after! 🙂

No prob man..I know were all getting pretty anxious (or neurotic, lol) about getting a decision (acceptance) from Howard...Thanks for your optimistic tidbits! I really appreciate that! Good luck to you too! 🙂

good luck to you guys waiting on the out of committee letter!!! I'm excited for you guys!

no acceptances in over a month!

i really hope they'll start sometime this month though!

So i just interviewed on the 30th and just got my out of committee email? Mrs. Walk said they will have a decision in about 2weeks? 😕 Is that bad or good? I really wanna get into Howard. Its my only chance for med school at this point :anxious:

Thanks Ladydoc09. Im praying 👍

Does anyone know where to live?

Depends on what kind of commute you want. Most people live within a 15 minute or less drive away, so DC, Silver Spring, Hyattsville (favorite location for the class of 2013) and northern Virginia (Arlington, Alexandria - these cities are quite expensive).

The neighborhoods around the school are called ledroit park, shaw, and columbia heights, and mt vernon.

Howard also has an on-campus option, The Towers, which is apartment style and you pay a monthly rent like everyone else with the utilities/cable included.

I can provide more information via pm.

Looking forward to meeting the class of 2014. Let me know if anyone has any questions. We have 4 more weeks in the semester.

For those who are doing PARP, enjoy your 4 weeks of freedom. I did PARP last year so let me know if you have any questions.

For those of you starting in July, enjoy your summers!

For the people who are undecided, let me know if you have any questions.

For everyone who is waiting to hear, don't loose hope!

first off, congrats to everyone who has been accepted!!

i interviewed early march, and got my out of committee letter march 26 but I haven't heard anything at all back from howard since that. I called friday and was told something was wrong with the system so they couldn't access anyone's status

anyone know what's going on? or in the same boat?

Hey Bulldoc, I called and also got the same thing about the system being down and that they could not tell what code had been entered. My letter has not been signed now for a 'minute' now but its all good...just keeps me kneelin' down in prayer coz the die has been cast, and there's little else to do but wait for good or bad news.:xf:
However, given the recent flurry of acceptances, the reality is that the window is even narrower than it was before for all the 'waiting faithful'. Since theoretically alternates aren't ranked, acceptances from that pool are issued based on something more elusive to define. Miracles happen and that's what we are all banking on. I imagine good news will 'leak' out rather than 'gush' out after last week's frenzy. Any new acceptance will likely come after May 15. I've heard of people getting off the waitlist in July from last year's thread, but that is a long shot even under the best of circumstances. Good luck, I say, is all...and keep the faith. Be blessed!!

So, does this mean that not many alternates will be accepted this year??? Last year, 350 interviewd and 290 were accepted. Thus, given Howard's # of spots (115), 175 alternates were eventually accepted. Is this not going to be the case this year???

you realize that if someone is accepted way back in oct and withdraws
the person who interviews after him may get accepted for his spot without getting waitlisted first

so no.

175 alternates were definitely not accepted

but <175 definitely were.

I ask the same question. Maybe "alternate" is not the correct terminology to use, but the math is there.

wouldn't worry too much
every year is a little different

knowing that howard accepts >80% of the individuals they intw should sound pretty good. and their reasons for rejecting are probably things you in your specific case can take care of.

thanks! i definitely will be keeping up the prayers! I called yesterday and they said to call back friday morning because that was when they thought their system would be back up and running.....just a heads up for you in case you wanted to also call and see if the wait is killing you as it is for me
