Haha, thanks. I was killing myself at the gym when the acceptances came out. Congrats to those who were accepted! Enjoy this moment, and as SunDevilDoc said for me, feel free to head over to the accepted thread with any questions (they probably have already been asked and answered by real, live UA med students!).

To everyone else, don't let this get you down at all. I agree that the waitlist should see good movement this year, because OOSers are less likely to take the spots they are offered, especially if they have another acceptance at their state school.

just wanted to tell everyone that two my friends got into phoenix today. these spots will be given up in favor of tucson.....so there are still Phoenix spots out there guys!
 
Does anybody have a plan on how to figure out when the waitlist is coming out? I say we form a plan to break into the admissions offices and steal the info Michael Westen-style.

J/K. But if anybody does find out, please be sure to post that info here. I'm still too busy licking my wounds from yesterday to call or email.
 
Think of it this way, right now we dont have a date to worry about. Going through like 10 hard acceptance dates without hearing anything is worse than having a general idea of when it will happen
 
Both Campuses said that they would release that info at least by the middle of March but wouldn't be more specific than that.
 
Hi everyone.

Long time reader, first time poster. I use this forum to figure out when UofA would send their next acceptance waves, and just like the rest of u, am quite dismayed and disheartened at the fact that I didn't make it into any of the waves. However, I too am now on the wait-list boat!

Just wanna express my gratitude for u all posting such useful info. and helping me out, it's nice to see that others are on the same agonizing boat as I am, esp. those of us who haven't even gotten 1 acceptance yet...

UofA is the only MD school that I got to interview at, my brother is chief neurosurgery resident at the Tucson campus, and I really really really wanna go there. You guys have no idea how badly I want this acceptance...

Congratz on those who got in and for those of us that didn't, let's really hope that we make it on the top 10 of the waitlist!
 
how are courses graded at U of A for both campuses? Are the first two years pass/fail? or graded? if graded, curved or noncurved?

I don't remember hearing anything about curves, but Phoenix is pass fail, you are the only one who knows your grades I don't think the professors or anyone else know. Tucson is also pass fail but grades sounded like more of an issue, I think they're reported when applying to residencies.

Tucson is also pass/fail two years (same at PHX), and just like Phoenix students aren't ranked at all during the first two years. Residencies will see your "grades" regardless of campus, but with an unranked pass/fail grading system it won't mean much. They will also see your board scores, which even if UA used honors, high pass, pass, marginal pass, or fail system, would still be more important than pre-clinical grades.

All in all, I don't think pre-clinical grades are an issue at either UA campus. Just focus on learning everything possible, so you pass.
 
possibly will give up my seat at phx been accepted in home state. will have to determine cost versus quality of med school

Just out of curiosity, how do you know how residency programs selections and priority in terms of what's "important" work? Not to sound like a jerk or something, but I am deciding schools so if you have any other inside information on what residency programs are looking for, I would greatly appreciate it!
 
Anyone know if the official SDN waitlist thread is up yet?
 
I am from ca. So the cost is quite obviously cheaper for a in state school but Phx has not posted tuition.
 
This is NOT an official thing, obviously, but when we interviewed I seem to remember her saying something about 39,000 ish. If that is the pricetag, I'd say that's an extremely fair price for out-of-state, compared to schools around the country. Basically anything 45k or less is fair.

But, if you decide you do want to give it up please call them and let them know that they should give the spot to me! Or, at least one of us SDNers who've been waiting so patiently!

Yeah, during my interview the lady said they had submitted something in the mid to upper $30's to the Board of Regents for approval, but the formal announcement is still pending. Looking briefly at UCSD's budget plan (I imagine all CA state schools to be around the same price, if not the same exactly), tuition is just under $27K with total estimated COA (assuming you don't live with your parents) at just over $48K for your first year. Let's say they do set it at $39K, with another $20K for living expenses. UA would probably cost around $10-$12K more than a CA state school. But the jump in tuition in the second and third years do appear to make up a chunk of that difference.

Well the most legitimate source of information I have found is journal articles published about residency selection factors. I have also seen the information contained in those articles reflected here on SDN. If you do a google search you can probably pull up a few articles related to residency selection factors in which the authors got information from a large number of program directors. The one that sticks out most in my mind was about ortho residency directors and their selection factors. Basically the top three factors were board scores, MS-III clinical grades, and audition rotations at their program (I don't remember the exact order either). Another thing that sticks out in my mind was that the name of the school an applicant went to was relatively far down on the list. I hope that helps legitimize my source for what I said.

Today and yesterday have brought some circumstances that make knowing whether I get rejected or not EVEN MORE important. And I know, I just know, that what is going to happen is that I will get rejected from tucson and waitlisted at Phoenix. That way I will have a "chance," but a small one - and they won't tell us our position on the waitlist!

Oh well. Bring it on medschool! 😎
 
are these the only two schools you applied to.Have you gotten any acceptances anywhere else that you can fall back on.If not I really hope you get into az.
 
Yup! I only applied to UA, but to both campuses. I really, really don't want to leave AZ! I've lived here for like 5 years, but I've lived in lots of other places. I love it here. I'm going to be very disappointed if I am forced (next year) to move to, say, Wisconsin for medical school.

Thanks for the positive thoughts though!
 
I think UofA should decide one spot through some kind of competition, like a board game, poker, home run derby, over the top battle royal, spelling bee, or maybe even a Mariokart contest. At least then we'd have some illusion of controlling our own fate. That's my random post of the day.
 
Yes, but it should not be a skill. It should be who can guess coinflips the most times in a row. That way we'll feel like we understand and can play a part, but really what we say and do doesn't matter. As long as we are at the competition, after that we cannot give ourselves better odds at all.

That would be sweet. They could turn it into a reality TV show and use to profits to keep tuition super low! I can see it now...

"Watch as one HUNDRED pre-meds battle it out for a spot in medical school! They've conquered organic chemistry, but can they handle the demolisher!?!?!?" Then it would cut to a scene of some pre-med kid getting demolished...

It could be just like that show Wipeout!

anyone know the best number to reach tanisha at in tucson? i've been trying to call the past couple of days at 520-626-6214 and all i do is get the answering machine after three or so rings.

That is the phone number I have. They gave the same number in the second look day invitation too. Maybe they're out at an early lunch?
 
Well it looks like you are really going to need my spot so if I decline I hope you get it.I hope this is your first time around or you might have chanced a year on only two schools.I hope you have a fall back plan or a job lined up if things do not work out.

hmm. yah i called 6 times this morning ( between 10 and now ). i just decided to leave a voicemail. hopefully they will return that.
 
Lol, they would never use profits from the advertisements to keep tuition low. If anything, they would raise tuition because of the exposure the school would get by the show.

They would probably just follow the example of our state government and spend everything they take in and then some. Then, they would just throw their hands up and say they don't know how to balance the budget, so they want to sell the capital building...
 
Anybody else out there in "just reject me and get it over with already" mode yet? I think I've reached that point today. Except, in contrast to Ehandber, I've had this strange feeling for some time that I was going to get rejected by Phoenix and waitlisted at Tucson. I know my spot. It will be #52, which probably means acceptance eventually, but it's far enough down that I won't get my acceptance until sometime in the end of June/beginning of July. So I'll get in, it'll just be like kicking myself in the balls every day for 4 months until I do.

I've felt like this was my year for some time, but the Med School Admissions Gods are going to find a way to make me suffer immensely before I reach the promised land.

And I just discovered that you can't put the emoticons in the subject line, and then you can't edit that to fix your mistake. Here is what I meant:

Med School Admissions Gods -> :diebanana: <- Me

Have you tried sitting on your balls? It still hurts like hell, but its a lot easier than kicking yourself. Plus, you're already sitting down when you do it, so you don't run the risk of falling and hitting your head, which could cause brain damage (obviously not good for med school or a number of other things in life).

More seriously though, I know it has to be hard the third time around, but try to stay upbeat about things. Maybe go hit up the batting cages. Who knows, you could make it into the minor league system, which as we all know would make for a sweet extracurricular activity!

Why don't you try applying to DO schools? It could save you many years of re-applying. Unless you want to go into a competitive specialty, like ROAD or something, which is tough to do with an MD anyway, DO isnt a bad way to go.
As of right now, I plan on being a sports medicine doc, and your interest in sports leads me to believe you might consider doing the same. Osteopathic medicine isn't a hindrance in that regard.
Im going to Nova Southeastern if I dont get in to UA, but I would still be devastated if i didnt make it in to this school, just not to the point where I would re apply 4 times

Yes. I wish they would reject people that have no chance of getting waitlisted earlier in the season, like many other medical schools. Waiting months and months thru many acceptance cycles to only get rejected is a waste of my time and energy.

I would just like to know is the release date for the waitlist/rejections.

You can certainly do some competitive specialties with a DO degree. There are ortho DO programs, and I'm sure there are others for the other specialties. Plus, there is the route of doing family medicine, and then doing a sports medicine fellowship for a nonsurgical route. I personally want to cut people though...:meanie:

I applied to DO schools my first year applying to med schools, but didn't get in (I was a SEVERELY underqualified applicant to any med school at that point). So I basically have as much faith in myself to get into an MD program as I do a DO program, and I really didn't feel like spending the time and money on the AACOM application as I did on the AMCAS. My daughter was born in September, so my money and efforts were being applied elsewhere. I impressed myself by somehow getting all my secondaries in by mid-October.

I know a DO can technically do anything an MD can do, but I'm not 100% sure of what I want to do, and I think being a DO could potentially close (or at least narrow) a door I may want to enter down the road. I know I don't want to do EM, family/general practice, peds, IM, or OB/GYN, and those specialties compose over 90% of every DO (or Caribbean, for that matter) match list I've ever seen. I realize it's kind of ironic for someone in their third year of applying to say that, but I'm only 24, so I'm still pretty young and have had a couple of years to work towards my goal of getting into UofA or another MD program.

I still feel pretty good about my chances this year. The doctor I've been working for at UMC ha said all along that someone like me will probably get a good waitlist spot. 'Someone like me' meaning a person with lots of good clinical and research experience (I'm an EMT and published author now), but pedestrian stats (3.61 GPA/3.59 sGPA, 9/11/10 P).
 
Come on UA. We have to get in! I can't stand this anymore. And, it is frustrating knowing that we probably won't get any word about the waitlist for like 3 week!
 
finally got through to U of A Office of Admissions to ask questions about the whole two weeks thing and choosing between schools and such......but i asked a couple more questions that people have posed in this thread, so here is what i found out

1) at the of the next two weeks, emails will be send out to those waitlisted
2) they anticipate putting about 100 on the waitlist, and being in the tophalf is favorable (1-50)
3) there is NO correlation in getting into one campus and another.

...funny thing about that last one....is i said that i read somewhere (cough cough, SDN, cough cough, this thread) that there was a 75 or 76% correlation rate of acceptances between both campuses (it is posted somewhere in this thread)....and she kind of laughed and said she has no idea where i got that information and she said that kind of information isnt recorded or published. just interesting haha.

I heard that straight from Tara herself, but the 76% figure is something that just happens, it's not something they aim for or avoid. Tucson, who you must have talked to, does not seem to care about keeping track of that sort of thing.

yes i talked to ann in tucson. tanisha isnt in. i havent actually spoken with tara...i communicate with her via email. and yah i take your word for it. haha. she insisted there is no crossover rate....or w/e you wanna call it....but i mean lets be honest here......if you get into one school....there is obviously something really good about you/your app and it is more likely you will get into another/other schools. so....yup
 
I hope he meant 2 weeks from the last PHX admission day, monday. I really need to know what is going on. :/ waiting suuuuucks

i only spoke with the Tucson campus. but i meant to write "end"....sorry.....i quote Ann "those that will be waitlisted should expect to receive an email after about two weeks from now"......so figure two weeks from today.

i did not speak with phoenix and they may do their waitlists differently.....i'm no sure if they rank or make a list or if its random....or what they're dates are. sorry.
