I know they are super different and I didn't go into specifics in my previous reply, but one of the main reasons I'm drawn to the phx campus is the small class size and family in Phoenix. I actually think I would like the Tucson area better (I grew up in Phoenix so I'm pretty familiar with what it's like to live there, and I was actually originally more interested in the Tucson campus). I guess in my internal justifications, for me, it isn't worth paying that much more for OOS tuition to get a similar experience that I would have in Iowa City. Actually it would be worth it for the weather, and if I didn't get into Phoenix I would be more than happy in Tucson 🙂 But, like I said earlier, I got a really good vibe at the Phoenix campus so I'm rolling with it because there is no way to know the best route before you take it.

And I'm glad you guys are optimistic about the state. I'm not too worried about it, but yeah some financial assistance would be awesome.

Hey Indy, I think I know who you are and yes, you should definitely come to Phoenix! You're our kind of person and you'll fit in well! Can't wait to see you this fall 🙂

Regarding financial aid I spoke with both Tucson and phx and they pretty much said to count on your fin aid package being made up primarily of loans. That's pretty much the worst case scenario and the most info we'll have by may 15th. The scholarships, if you recieve one, will be a couple thousand at most and not make a significant impact on your total COA. This is according to the fun aid people.

Also, speaking of second look, was anyone else a little scared when they saw the match list? Sure some people matched in competitive specialties but very few went out of state, not to mention that the majority stayed in Tucson...which is fine if that was a top choice, but I feel like the number is pretty high. Also, I'm not sure on numbers (I might call to get specifics) but I remember my student tour guides saying (they were 2nd years), that they had quite a few people scramble which in my opinion is never a good thing.

match list wasn't great....but i have always felt that it is YOU that gets the Step 1 score. You that studies. You that gets the match results. Basically, I feel you can get a good match or a bad match from any school. It comes down to you to take the initiative to succeed and prepare yourself well for your boards/residency.

as far as scambling, it happens. its not ideal, but it happens. i wouldn't let match lists affect your decision that much.

Don't forget that the '10 graduating class was the first class to go through the new curriculum and totally bombed Step 1.

I follow the typical SDN belief that match lists are meaningless. When you consider that the match list from this year was made up of an exclusively in-state class, it only makes sense that most people matched in AZ. For most of us, AZ is where our families are, so we WANT to be here. Unfortunately, a match list can't tell you that. Furthermore, AZ is a very desirable place to live (regardless of what all the ***** AZ-boycotters try to tell you), so even people without family in AZ probably would want to stay here.

As for competitive specialties, the same rule applies. We have no idea where people wanted to go. As T-dog pointed out, things like Step-I (which plays a major role in matching) comes down to the individual. Part of this may have been that this year's class was the first group to go through the brand new curriculum (we'll be the 5th, so its been well-refined by now), but it also seems like UA emphasizes primary care fields too. This makes sense, because UA is the only allopathic medical school in AZ so it has the responsibility of filling our state's primary care needs.

All-in-all, UA offers a number of great opportunities to gain research and clinical experience in any field you may be interested in, so the only real variable is you. Will you do what it takes to match into neurosurgery, ortho, derm, optho? If not at UA, you probably wouldn't do it anywhere, because the school doesn't make you, you make you who you are.

I third this. I also think national rankings are, particularly for UA, inherently affected by the fact that all other classes (until 2014) were entirely comprised of IS students. Much of the ranking criteria is based on reputation, and because UA students were/are largely part of a closed system of education/practice, grading the school by these criteria is flawed.

I am of the mind that a good medical student is a good medical student. If you struggle with endocrine in Tucson, you will likely struggle with it in Boston as well.

haha ya I'm pretty sure I've got you figured out too, thanks for showing me around!

Last day of April, meaning, the last day of slow movement . . . hopefully 🙂

I agree that a school's ranking means little, and that much of a student's match and ultimate success is up to him or her.

Hey! Sorry I missed you guys last night - Shep said you all had a good time. I was there from 9-10:30, but I couldn't find you all! I looked all over the place, but I guess that's the problem when you meet people in person that you've only met online: you don't know what to look for! Haha, guess we should have been somehow more organized or something. Oh well, if we decide to try it again when Erik can make it, I'll be there. 🙂

Totally not her fault, we had a mix-up with phone numbers! I take full responsibility. I probably would have recognized her if we weren't sitting at the very furthest possible table from the entrance, haha. Trust me, absolutely not her fault. She's way to cool to pull an Erik.

bummer.....oh well. maybe next time.

way to go....Erik. Fishing in Payson > getting beers with future classmates. lol.

Sorry guys. Brrooother and Erik are the only people I recognize. I definitely tried to look for you guys, but wasn't really sure how to distinguish you from the other million people there!

Thanks for sticking up for me, Shep! I'm glad you guys had fun, and I really hope we can try it again so I can meet you all.

I should mention, though, I did run into aztri and had a fantastic time with her - thanks again, aztri!

Anytime! I had a great time with you too! Thanks for hanging out with all of us crazy bioengineers! Haha and for chatting with my Dad!

I'm so sorry everyone! I have never been fishing before and I wanted to try it while I had the chance/convenient cabin to stay at for free! I got to catch a fish which was super cool 😎

Next time I promise I will be there. I felt awful for not coming, but I figure we have four years together (hopefully) and I only had the cabin offer last night.

Glad you all had a great time! And, I can't believe it is already May! Hopefully, in about half a month everyone will start making final decisions. Then, maybe we will go to medical school! Wooowoooo 👍

Yo Erik, I'll take you fishing some time, just say the word 😀 Once things get settled this Fall, I'll let you know next time I go.

I second the motion for much May movement. Erik will be in no later than early June 👍

I'm going to call Tucson after work today (mid-afternoon), and see where we are at!!! Let's hope the wait list moved a lot over the weekend!

As of 11:00am, still at #23.

Sorry for calling before you MH, didn't see the board until after I called.

Less than 12 have come off the IS PHX WL so far - I wasn't given a specific number, but if it's near 12, that's a respectable amount of movement (especially considering we're still at 23 for Tucson). So, not all that bad, I guess. May is gonna be a good month - I can feel it! :xf::xf:😀

No problem at all! More news the better, although have to admit I am sad the weekend didn't bring ANY movement 🙁...COME ON TUCSON!

That's great news. Did you call the office? May is going to be a great month for SDN.

I had emailed Tara, and she said less than a dozen - I'm guessing that means near, but not quite to 12 (9-11). I agree, that's good. I'm guessing May will double what we've gotten so far, or maybe do even better. I'd say it'll be between 20-30 pulled ultimately.

Now that we know May 1st numbers, we can make some guesses. If this year were to follow historic precedence, a May 1st number of 23 as 38-40% of total movement yields a total of 57-61 pulled. IF Phoenix is anything like Tuscon, a May 1st number of 10 at 38-40% would yield 25-27 total ISers pulled at the end of the cycle. I want to emphasize that these are guesstimates, but probably within a few of what will really happen.

In 12 days we'll have a little more insight into the actual final number.

i will be withdrawing from Tucson as soon as i get a letter in the mail, which should be any day now...possibly today. so the Tucson WL will for sure move at least one spot this week.

Updated HappyT's info and changed 5/3 to 5/4 on the bottom of the list (of course in preparation for movement tomorrow!!!)

I stopped by the admissions office today around 2PM and we were still at #23 like Erik heard this morning. I'm excited for even the little movement jturkel's spot will give us and I KNOW there will be other movement this week as well 🙂 Keep sending positive vibes everyone!

I think you're right, MedHopeful 😀

Going to medical school is a huge step towards a career, yet in many ways I feel like I simply delayed my decision on a career for three or four more years. For anyone undecided on an field within medicine, there's obviously still some time to decide. And as this SDN article points out, apparently there is still hope if you get into a residency and realize the field/specialty is not for you.

I thought that was interesting - though I'll bet not all situations turn out as peachy as the examples given. Still a good idea to do our homework BEFORE applying for residency (just like we did before medical school). 😎

Quick informal poll: When did you decide to pursue a career as a doctor?
> Pre-HS
> High School
> College/Undergrad
> Post-Grad

I didn't even consider it until undergrad.

Go SUNS! I think they have to win Game 2 if they want the series.

I don't know about that. I think if they win game 2 and go up 2-0, then their momentum should be enough to carry them through this series no problem. Now if they lose game 2 it will be more of a challenge, but I think they would still have a great shot at winning. I've got to be honest though, if I have to watch them give up 10 point halftime leads in 4 minutes, then build the lead back up to 14 points, only to again give up that lead, so they can win the game by like 11, I might just kill myself...

I'm still not sure...I just figured going to med school was better than having to get a real job...

Actually, this is kind of a complicated question to answer. My first interest in becoming a doctor was pre-HS, but obviously I didn't know what the hell actually went into becoming a doctor all the way back then. Then again in high school, I still sort of had that interest when I actually took the time to think about my future (not that I did that a lot, because I was like all other high schoolers, an idiot). I guess I would have to say I fully grasped the idea of what it would take to become a doctor and what that sort of career would actually entail when I got into college. I mean, when I was in Africa saving babies from burning buildings and lions, the thought occurred to me that medicine might be right for me...yeah, it was really big and dramatic like that...

 Yeah, while in HS I considered a lot of careers - not really medicine though, but I was like you and all other HSers, as you mention, an idiot. I didn't consider anything seriously until college.

About the Suns, I agree that if they win Game 2 they should be able to close it out. I admit they still have a chance even if they lose it, but I think it's less of a chance than what you're thinking. It is true that this year's team is different than the Suns of yore - they can make a defensive stand every once in a while, or when they really need it. Prior Suns teams may have melted down with the Spurs comebacks on Monday - it was definitely a good sign for us. 😀

Either way, Game 2 will tell us a lot about how the rest of the series will go.

Definitely pre-HS for me. I don't remember a time when I didn't want to be a doctor, and in particular a "baby doctor". Do you guys remember the Little PlaySchool black doctor bag that had a yellow and blue plastic stethoscope, and plastic band-aids and fake casts. I took that thing EVERYWHERE with me when I was a kid. And needless to say being a girl I had a lot of stuffed animals and they were always in some kind of peril needing immediate medical attention!

I'm glad we agree that HSers are idiots...god they drive me nuts...

I was more nervous about the suns facing Portland than I was about them facing the spurs. I hate the Spurs, but I think they are getting older and just aren't the same this year. I know they finished the season hot, but I just don't think they will create the problems they have in the past. In the past we were all about offense, and so when we were on defense they had no trouble scoring. Now that we actually have some defense its going to make things much more difficult on them offensively. When we're on offense, I think this year is similar to years past when we've played them, in that they're great defensively and we're great at scoring. Looking at last night's game, the times the Spurs were able to get back into the game was when our offense went ice cold and not so much just that our defense fell apart.

The other thing we have going for us this year is a high quality bench. D'Antoni played the starters to exhaustion and didn't use the bench enough, which spelled our demise. Heck, this year's bench is in some ways better than the starters, especially on defense. I have high hopes that we'll knock out the Spurs finally this year, unlike in the past.

I think you're right, MedHopeful 😀

I didn't even consider it until undergrad.

It crossed my mind ever since I was a kid, but I didn't consider it seriously until my last semester of undergrad... was nearing graduation with a degree in music performance and realized suddenly (can still remember the exact moment and exact location) that it wasn't what I wanted to do and that I wanted to be a doctor. Pulled my grad papers the next day to keep my senior status and signed up for my first science prereqs, then never looked back. 🙄

It may have made me spend eight years in undergrad, but totally worth it. 🙂

needless to say being a girl

I've really got to stop assuming that all the people on here are men. Is that inherent sexism? I hope not. Does anyone else do that?

And-

I started thinking about going to medical school when one of my friends told me he was gonna do it sophomore year of college. I had already failed out of college once, then was an actor/comedian, then came back to go to CC to become a firefighter, then finally came back to ASU to actually "try" to do well in college. I only started "trying" when my friend told me I probably would need a 4.0 to make up for the other stuff I had done.

To be honest, I'm still not totally convinced that I "should" be a doctor. But I am convinced that I am *going to be* a doctor. Maybe I will end up in military medicine, or doctors without borders, or maybe doing consultant work for hollywood. But I am definitely going to do this because it is the only thing that has been able to hold my attention for more than 6months.

Ha ha I don't think it is sexist. I generally assume you are all guys for some reason too, it is weird. At first I was going to suggest that we put male/female next to our wait list positions on the master list, but then I thought that would sound sexist so I never suggested it 😛

Did anybody else watching the game last night get angry at Doug Collins for insinuating that Suns fans would LOVE to have Manu Ginobili on our team? I wanted to throw something at him. I say keep Flopmeisterus Argentinius away from us. I also agree that this is our best chance yet to beat the Spurs, in large part because of Gentry's ingenious idea of using more than 6-7 players, but also because I'd take Richardson, Dudley, Frye and Hill every single day over Marion, Bell, Thomas and Diaw. However, I did believe the Suns would have beaten the Spurs and gone on to win the NBA Championship if not for those suspensions. My life will not be complete until I get the chance to boo David Stern in person.

In junior high I had a dream that I was operating on one of my class mates. I have wanted to be a doctor ever since.
