Chimed2010, do you think that you'll go to KU or will you go to Rush?

She actually called Jason about an hour ago and he said the letters were sent out Tuesday and Wednesday. She said she didn't see any rhyme or reason as to the order in which they sent them....

I'm from Midwest Kansas and I have not received my letter yet either. Hopefully there is yet to be some good news spread and the delayed letters aren't are bearers of bad news!

Congrats to all who have been accepted! And for those who got the dreaded rejection letter... Don't give up!

I'm a first year applicant and hoping for the best yet, but when you find something you really want to do, a couple years of proving yourself will by no means stop me from obtaining my dream!

Lol, joining the party a little late there buddy. 😉

Good luck! Let us know how it works out tomorrow!

Haha, yeah.. I have viewed the forums a couple times before, but never really got around to making an account until now. Funny what waiting for a letter in the mail makes one do.

And will do, thanks!!

Still haven't gotten my letter... But, I got an email this morning instructing me to set up a secure student account at KUMC. Wanted to make sure I wasn't reading too much into it so I called the admissions office and they confirmed I was ACCEPTED! Can't wait to meet everyone in July!

Congratulations everyone!!! It's exciting to get to know my classmates before the school year even begins ^_^

To those who didn't get the letter they hoped for, DO NOT give up. Apply at the start of this next year's cycle, and pack in some amazing service opportunities and shadowing before then. Go to the INMED Medical Missions Conference in May and network there (and meet a TON of amazing people doing unbelievable things in medicine).

Maybe even do EDP if that suits you. And if you're able, broaden your application to as many schools as you can. I decided I'd go anywhere, my husband supported me all the way, so I chose the desperate number 22. heh But with 17 rejections in my pocket, they don't even sting anymore - my precious "yes" was worth all the exhausting secondaries and the painful shot it took to our tiny savings.

Don't let anything stand in your way. Medicine needs you, even if the schools fall short by not being able to bring in everyone who would make amazing physicians. I hope you'll still be my future colleages ^_^

Chimed2010, do you think that you'll go to KU or will you go to Rush?

It's gonna be a very tough call. Being out of state, I was not exactly mentally prepared to get an acceptance from KU. However, I loved the school when I interviewed and I'm a KC native, so I'm just going to have to think it over for a bit.

I can't believe they did it like that!

Keithokc did you get an email to setup a secure KUMC account?

Now i'm worried about my gf... 🙁

The mail just arrived at my apartment this morning, no KU letter...WTF?

Lawrence hippies...ugh

I live in Lawrence, KS - The mail system is just terrible here.

Yeah I recieved the same secure email message this am. So I am assuming if you got in you'll get one of those.

I'm out of state and got letter yesterday.

"Wow page 17!"

I'm OOS and haven't gotten my letter but got the email.

And bummed UTKD missed out on "Wow, page 17".

Lol ya, stupid class.. Keithokc should post it in my honor!

I looked, I got the email on Apr 25, but that was 3 wks after I got my letter.

Annnnd I got alternate listed. Seat #16. Does anyone have a better idea of what the chances of me getting accepted are? It is definitely better than a rejection letter, but it has introduced more OCD into attempting to figure out what my chances of receiving an acceptance letter are. lol.

I'm waitlisted at #17. Our chances aren't that great. They took 7 off the list last year, 13 in 2008 and 5 in 2007. I was invited to apply for the post-bacc program though and I'm really considering it. I have an acceptance elsewhere but KU is my top choice, so we'll see what happens. As low as tuition is at KU compared to other schools, I don't think we'll see much of a change this year in waitlist movement.

I would not ask that question in this thread...but i think they accepted less people this year and thus the waitlist movement should be a bit better than years past. But I honestly couldn't tell you the chances and I wish you the best of luck.

We had some very unfortunate people just miss matriculation by two spots last year.

Accepted up to #7 and he was #9. Poor guy, but he's matriculating this year and I'm very happy for jaydoc24!!!

My girlfriend got alternate #2! Have they ever not reached at least alternate #2?

Welp, the jig is up for me. Congrats to all those that made it this year. For those of you that didn't, I look forward to your company next cycle. 🙄

I'm sorry to hear you didn't get in this cycle, but hey, maybe we will get in next cycle and be classmates! 🙂

What are your thoughts of D.O. vs. M.D. ? I see that you were accepted into KCUMB, congratulations!

I hope KU works out for you, but if worst comes to worst and it doesn't, I certainly wouldn't mind going to KCUMB or PCOM.

Come to think of it, I was stupid not to apply there since it's not AMCAS and you can do that at the same time as KU EDP.

Good luck!

Actually, you aren't supposed to apply to ANY other medical school if you are doing EDP.

I looked into it!

Good luck to those waitlisted, sympathy to those rejected, and congrats to those accepted!!!

I was also invited to apply for the post-bac program.. I am currently trying to figure out a little more about it.. Through acceptance and matriculation through that program do we still have to apply through AMCAS or is it a guaranteed thing? The letter explaining it was kind of vague in some ways. Let me know what you decide with the post-bac and congratulations on the alternate list ... it's a lot better than a straight-up rejection letter I suppose! I will probably end up apply for the program and just see where I am at in April.

And UTKD, congrats to both you and your girlfriend on the acceptance and alternate list #2 (pretty much accepted... lol) ... If she wants to switch me spots on the alternate list feel free to let me know!

You have to apply for the program and you're notified in May of acceptance. Once you're in, you're into KU med if you can keep at least a 3.0 in the post-bac classes.

So here's some info from some who just completed the program....

So, I received my application for the post-bacc program around April 1st of last year, the deadline for the application was mid April and I received my acceptance email May 1st...with the program starting June 5th! It was a very quick process. I am not sure how they select students but I do know that in order to be considered you must have interviewed and not been accepted..in addition you must show a lot of potential. They choose 12 students for the program and send out close to 40 applications. So receiving an application is selective. They do offer acceptances to more than 12 because some people choose to decline the offer for one reason or the other...in a way its kind of like med school admissions they offer more spots than seats because they anticipate some students declining the offer.
The post-bacc program is a guarantee into med school as long as we keep a 3.0 gpa and complete the pre-matriculation program. It starts in June and goes through July of the following year. We take 9 credits of 400 level or high Biology courses...3 credits of elective. The science courses are those that will help us in med school eg..biochem, mammalian physiology, immunology, etc.
Its a really great program and it has been going by so fast! March is right around the corner! My classmates and I get along well and we study together which helps so much. If your friend gets an application I highly reccomend he or she apply! I dont know many post-bacc programs that offer a guarantee acceptance into medical school.
Your friend should also talk to Sandy McCurdy. She offers great advice and insight as to why a student was not accepted.

I think they send out about 40 invitations to apply for 10 spots in the post-bacc program. So it's not guaranteed that we'd even get into the program if we applied. All I really know is that you take 12 hours in the fall and spring and a class in the summer. You're guaranteed a spot in next year's KU-SOM class with a 3.0GPA.

Thanks both of you for the insight.

I don't know this is how it works for a fact, but at one point the were sending post-bacc students to Dr. Pendergrass at KU Edwards. He was my (informal) post-bacc advisor. He isn't easy. He will kick your you-know-what, but you will know your stuff.....

No harm in applying. It's a sure thing if you can get in and do it. And what's one more year in the grand scheme of things?

Best of luck to everyone!

For those of you who have been placed on the alternate list - how did you find out your rank? I got my letter on Thursday notifying me of my placement on the alternate list, but it didn't say anything about my ranking . . .

Uh, it will definitely say what position you are in.

My gf's letter says "by recommendation of the committee we have...blah blah blah...alternate list...position number ____.

If it doesn't say that then either KU made a big mistake or you might be reading a rejection or acceptance letter!

Hey everybody. I was wondering if anyone knows how they select which people get invited to apply for the post-bacc program. I'm #9 on the alternate list but didn't get an invite to apply for it. Thanks!

Hey axchiles,

You might go back a couple pages and find the user queso2 and send a PM. He/she just completed the post-bac program and has some great insight as to whom these post-bac invitations are sent.

I was asking about it a while ago for a friend...He found it very helpful.

I am OOS and interviewed Feb 11. I still have not heard. They also havn't updated anything on my MEDS page.

What do they tell you in the email? Do they give you a decision?

I am OOS and interviewed Feb 11. I still have not heard. They also havn't updated anything on my MEDS page.

I am OOS and interviewed on Feb 10th, Got a letter in Oklahoma on Thursday followed by an email to set up my account at KUMC for official email ect... so if you got in I am thinking you would have got an email. No MEDS updates this year, mine is not updated.

What do they tell you in the email? Do they give you a decision?

drk09:

First, I wouldn't worry about the letter. They weren't sent until Tuesday or Wednesday. So, if you are out of state then I am sure it'll take just a little longer than 2-3 days to get there.

Secondly and unfortunately, the way my gf and I knew she was not going to get an acceptance yesterday is that she had not received the KUMC secure account email. These types of emails are sent 'en mass' and are good indications of one's exclusion. This was reminiscent of me not receiving the update message for EDP interview and I was, in fact, rolled over into RD. So, at that point we knew that she'd have to pray for a good position on the waitlist.

I wish you the best of luck, but it is almost certain that you have been waitlisted or you'll receive ...... the other letter we won't mention.

However, my gf is #2 so don't give up hope. You might be #3!

Sorry if this info is not what you wanted to hear.

I was invited to apply for the post-bacc program and I have a couple questions that I hope you or anyone can answer. the invitation letter was vague about details.

1. they said in the letter that admission is "competitive" but is there a real chance i can get denied if i apply? the application is so short that the only thing that would seem to set applicants apart is the personal statement. What are some tips or things you put in your 250 word personal statement that accentuated your application.

2. How much does the program cost?

3. How do students such as yourself financially support themselves during this program? Is there enough time to have a job? Or is there a stipend involved?

4. Did you have to take any of the upper-level science courses at the lawrence campus or was everything at Edwards?

5. Finally, where did you choose to live?

I know this is alot to ask. But I would love to hear from someone about these questions. PM me if need be. thanks in advance 🙂

1) Yes, applying does not guarantee a spot in the post-bacc program. If I have read correctly, around 40 people apply and only 10 get accepted. I also got invited to apply for the post-bacc program and by looking at the application it looks as if they mainly look at two things.. 1) your ability to write a convincing personal statement, and 2) if you're disadvantaged or reside in an underserved or rural county.

2) I believe the program is completely paid for. If you go to the website that was posted on your letter to find the application, browse around that a little bit, additional information on the program can be found.

3) You are only expected to take 12 credit hours for both semesters at Lawrence; therefore, if you can manage to find a job, I'm sure you should have plenty of time to work also.

4) My interpretation is the first summer, and then the fall and spring are all at the Lawrence campus; however, I may be mistaken.

5) It was mentioned that they supply housing. However, I am unsure if the housing they supply is just dormitory housing or what. I would prefer not to live in the dorms, so if I do, by a long shot, get accepted, I would try and find an apartment.

I hope this is of help. The answers are kind of vague but it's the best I could provide at the moment. Congrats on receiving the application to apply for the post-bacc program, it may not be an acceptance yet but hopefully it leads to that.

They give you a $10,000 stipend for the tuition and provide housing i believe.

They give you a $10,000 stipend to help with tuition as well.

Do you mind elaborating on the questions i asked previously since you were part of the program? Are you eligible for financial aid? What kind of housing did they provide?

Sorry eiheme22,

I wasn't in the program. User queso2 just recently completed the program and will matriculate this year. I was accepted this cycle but was asking questions about the post-bac program for a friend. The information that you quoted from me came from queso2 as a private message. You might go a couple of pages back in this thread and direct your questions to him/her.

I had several students from the Post-Bacc program in my Biochem class a couple years ago at KU Edwards. Which was with Dr. Pendergrass, who absolutely does kick your expletivedelete, but is a great guy and gives good advice. His classes are more like reviewing than learning the material for the first time, be forewarned, so do the preclass reading/assignment things... but he is great at explaining things if you ask, so make sure to ask lots of questions!!

As for the program app itself, I have a good friend who was flat-out rejected. Is she eligible for the program - or rather, can she apply if she didn't receive an invitation/application? It sounds like not, but I was curious for her sake...

As for DO vs MD, I love the DO whole-person comprehensive perspective of medicine and would be absolutely thrilled to go to KCUMB or AT Stills if I hadn't gotten into KU. But I <3 KU so I'm elated that I got my "yes!" ^_^

Sorry about your friend. Such a tough situation to be in.

You are correct in that applying for the post-bac program is only by invitation. I truly wish they could expand or allow more people to apply for this program, but at least the people who do receive the application have a decent shot of getting in.

I hope your friend keeps her head up. As most ppl have said: one year in the grand scheme of things won't matter a bit.

UTKD

PS: Auriga, I saw your MDApps and had a quick question... How is your post-interview hold at Case Western looking? I didn't apply there but I hear such good things! Is their curriculum systems based, PBL, or just subject based?

I'm just going to throw a few things out there for reapplicants next year:

1. You can apply EDP to an MD school and simultaneously apply to DO schools. Do the research yourself and find the answer. Don't listen to heresay from me or whoever said you cannot apply this way.

2. I was waitlisted last year and was not invited to the post bacc program while two of my friends who were flat-out rejected were invited. I thought that was strange so I just asked the admissions office about it. KU Med doesn't really decide who they invite to apply. The applications are given out based on standards set by the state of Kansas. The biggest factor is coming from a disadvantaged background I think. KU Med does decide which of the 10 of 40 are accepted, though. Hope that helps.

Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about your friend. Such a tough situation to be in.
Yeah...she was waitlisted in 2008 and flat out rejected this year. She's really bummed, and so am I - I worked with her in the ER, she is brilliant and has work several years in health care, and still...makes me appreciate my yes a thousand times more when I see the caliber of people who don't get in. But she will apply every year until she gets in - she knows without a doubt it is what she wants. I encouraged her to broaden her applications beyond the KC area. She's waiting to hear from KCUMB :xf:

Sighhhhhh I got the depressing email:
"We have concluded our interview season and held the final Admissions Committee meeting this week. As of today, we are not in the position to make any additional acceptances, but do anticipate that some will likely be made from our alternate list this spring; at the end of the month, we will invite some applicants from the "hold" pool to be on this alternate list. We know that admissions season can be quite stressful, and we thank you for your continued patience throughout this long process. "

Which I interpret as a "soft" rejection. I still can't quite figure out if they HAVE a waitlist already, or if this is the pool the waitlist will be taken from.

As much as I love and am excited about KU, Case floored me with their program. It is PBL based, with two hours in PBL and two hours in lecture each day. I got to sit in on a PBL group and loved the learning style and atmosphere. Also, the city is roughly the size of KC and has 3 major hospitals leading in the nation, including I believe #2 or #1 in pediatrics, and only 1 medical school - with huge opportunities for students to volunteer, shadow, do clinicals, and ultimately residencies. I met with amazing professors with great philosophies and projects about improving health care availability for indigent populations. Case tuition is astronomical, but would be worth it nonetheless.
So it's an unrequited crush...reminiscent of high school T_T haha

But I'm also really excited about the possibility of doing an underserved area service program, and I'm looking into that here at KU. I am bilingual and I know there are a number of underserved areas where that would truly be of great use! TBH that is starting to excite me more than Case. Maybe it is meant to be ^_^

Wow, I actually think that the email isn't a rejection at all. I think that they're not going to accept you but they're going to create the alternate list and send you the results at the end of the month.

That email sucks because you've been waiting so long and they don't have the final waitlist and rejection letters ready yet.

But...if you don't get on the alternate list at the end of this month then you're pretty much s.o.l.

I think, though, you're definitely not out of the running and need that horrible phrase "continued patience" until the end of march/early april.

Good luck,

UTKD
