I wish that I was able to come, but I'm going to be down in Tan-Tar-A for a conference that week. 🙁

If I were able to go, I think that I would be okay with either the P&L or the Plaza, though. I think that either one would be a good place to meet up.

Has this whole medical school thing sunk in on everybody else yet? I'm still not to the point where it has gotten "real". Maybe that is because I still haven't turned in notice on my last day at work!

I saw the article, but I'm not sure that these numbers are entirely correct. However, if they are...It would look very bad on KU if they said in the "hold" letter that they're only extending acceptances up to 195-200 in March and went on to accept another 25 people. Perhaps this is a new measure to avoid overfilling the class and go a bit further down the waitlist. Normally, I'd be like "ok" they usually accept ~225 and still get to # 5 on the waitlist, but I just can't imagine that KU would lie in letter form. Anyways, thanks for checking jaydoc24. I suppose KU left them out for a reason so you don't need to rummage for the old hold letters. She'll just have to wait until Late May and figure it out where she is then...

EDIT: Figured it out...

I am thinking that the deferrals (2-3), accepted waitlisters (~8), and the post-bac folks (10-12) are also included in those statistics. (The rural med ppl are left out b/c they are included in the initial round of acceptances)

That's 20-23 acceptances that are not considered. It's not counting "initial" acceptances, it's counting all the acceptances offered for the 200X cycle.

So that makes perfect sense as to why they've "accepted" ~225 each year, but for all practical purposes the waitlisters are dealing with an overfilled class by 25.

What does this mean for the waitlisters? Absolutely nothing but at least KU is keeping its word... They've overfilled by ~25 each year and they're only getting to numbers 5-13. 🙁 How depressing.

People love their jayhawks.

I also think more people are staying at KU not only due to the economy but because of the major changes in curriculum and strides to increase its school rankings. The USMLE Step 1 pass rate in 2002 was only 81%, now it's over 90%. Now that KU is a computerized, systems-based medical school it is much more appealing.

205 acceptances were initially offered just FYI.

Although, some could have dropped already...

205 acceptances are currently being held just FYI.

I thought it was 210. And out of that 134 males and 76 females. (That's what some MS1s said). Not great odds for single guys (myself) as we only see other med students for four years.

205 came directly from Sandra in an email. So, sounds like someone else was speculating or heard a rumor. IDK about the guy/girl ratio…but 205 is legit.

Maybe it was 205 that they said. Either way about the ratio though our class is going to be awesome.

UTKD...don't forget about those who were already accepted via Scholars in Rural Health...i'm pretty sure there are 10 people in my class who were accepted that route. I'm pretty sure there were originally 210 people that were holding acceptances, but that of course can/will change, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's down to 205 already.

Like I said in my post the scholars in rural health are included in the initial acceptances - that's why you can't add them. The 205 was not the current number of applicants holding acceptances it was the number initially offered. She didn't tell me the current #.

Jason told me via e-mail that it was going to be April 30. He said that they would e-mail out more information in a few weeks. He said it would go to the e-mail account registered with AMCAS, so be sure to check that occasionally. I had to ask too, to make sure I could have off that day.

Sure we can get together that weekend! What do you want to do? In the KUMED part of town, both the Plaza and the Power & Light district are nearby. (I was thinking restaurant/bar type of thing, but any other ideas?)

We'll be there. I don't know the area so wherever is cool, never been either place. We won't get in until Thursday but plan to stay until Monday so depending on what KU has planned Fri or Sat night work.

Anybody else that wants to get out and meet some of your future classmates is welcome!

Oh, and RT2MD, sucks you'll be gone. But I'm sure we'll have time to get together at some point in the next four years.

I'm so excited for second look!!!

There are all sorts of great places 5-15 mins from campus, like in the Westport and Plaza areas - depending on traffic and the weight of your gas pedal foot.

What kind of food do you guys enjoy? That will make it easier to decide where. A bar might be stuffy and dark, but there are some good (and reasonably priced 👍) restaurants around.

We should have stuff going on at KUMC during the day, although I'm not sure what they do at second look. I think the plan is to get together that evening so all the spouses can come. I figure we can plan what to do once we have the schedule for the day.

Getting together sounds fun! On Facebook there is someone trying to head up a similar gathering for the SOM Class of '14. Any place with food sounds good to me.

KU sure is taking its time in getting us an invitation to this second look. . .

I know one person who was accepted back in the fall and will be attending another school.

also, may i add, that the housing situation SUCKS for KS residents. you can't live on the MO side of KC. what kind of crap is that? the KCK housing options are so much worse than the KCMO ones. if you don't want to live in one of those crappy houses near KU Med, then you have few options for nearby apartments. personally, I don't want to live at Vista or anything...I would feel I'd never get away from school being that close to campus.

I'm looking at the Mission apartments, but they're kind of farther from P&L and the going out places so I don't know if I'd like that.

does anyone have any info on the Armourdale area? is it a good or bad area?

Nooo.... The thread died. Really hope they get second look info out soon.

Also, why do some think its better to live on the MO side? I'm OOS so this will cost a medium to large house either way, but I had only considered moving to the KS side thus far.

I'm not extremely knowledgable about the area right around KU, but it's generally cheaper on the MO side, that much I know. There's tons of housing in the Midtown (MO) area.

I think it'll get busy in here again when second look invites go out! It's the general Class of 2014 thread that's on page 1700 or so. Crazy in there!

Well... I've been kinda busy, so I haven't been doing my part with keeping this forum going. 🙄 This is my attempt to stimulate some conversation!

Anybody else get the book from KU yet? It looks pretty interesting, I'm excited to have a non school book to read before school starts - I've burned through everything that I have been interested in recently.

Anywhoo... I guess that's all I've got to offer. 😎

Off to sleep!

Just got the book yesterday as well. A free book?! The perks are already starting- haha! A friemnd of mine in vet school gets all kinds of perks, like $5 20 lb science diet food, free heart, tick, and flea meds from Frontline, free back packs from... Though I don't know what med students could get. Free percocet?

I, too, am anxious to read that book. I definitely don't want to be the guy that came unprepared day one! So these "academic societies" are those anything like The Skulls?

What is the title of the book?

I haven't received mine yet...

I have been wanting to read that book forever so now I don't have to buy it! I'm already on page 40. Yes, I am a HUGE nerd. I read EVERYTHING.

UTKD, it's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" - her cells became HeLa.

When I opened it, my husband said "Don't worry, they will add $37 to your bill for that!" ha!

Science Diet dog food and Frontline meds?!?!?!? Do you know how much that stuff costs?!?!?! No fair!!!!! Yes, Laryngo, we need to petition for free Percocet. 🙂

On another note, I wish the school could get their act together and get us information on Second Look, Orientation, Financial Aid, etc....

Interesting book though...I work with those cells in my lab.

What's another $37 tacked on to the 200k we're going to be in debt? ha.

Also, on that list I have read Mountains Beyond Mountains, and it was really good if anyone needs something else to read.

The academic societies are a way of organizing our class into smaller units, as far as I can tell. They have dinner, too. Wish it was like the skulls, though, wouldn't mind all that cash you get.

Got the book too... I'll read it when I'm finished reading 'Wicked.' I've decided to use my pre-med school months to read fanciful books that I won't be able to get to come July.

Like the Twilight Saga. Yes, I'm a guy. Yes, I've read the Twilight series. Yes, I liked them all.

Now that I've got that out there, I wish these societies were like the secret societies of the Ivy League schools. Coming from the East Coast, I've been on a number of the campuses. Yale has a secret society that has its own six story building. There are no windows. A single door. And it's been that way since the 1700s. That building also has the largest water bill in the entire state of Connecticut every month. No-one knows why.

So, a bit of intrigue to go with your afternoon...

It seems these months before we start are dragging themselves out longer and longer...

I believe that there's a secret society at yale with a 6 story building and a massive water bill. But not that a dude liked Twilight.

(I hope you know I am kidding!)

HAHAHA... that was pretty good. I've not read the books (my wife has), but I was forced to sit through the first movie. Wow. It. Was. Horrible. Some of the worst acting that I've seen in a long time, and the rest of it seemed cheesy.

I'm not trying to hate on anyone, I do own all the Harry Potter books and movies after all!

Woah, woah, woah there. We might be on a slippery slope! What's next?!!?! Justin Bieber?

Hold the phone. Who's hating on Justin Bieber? *sings Lemme Tell Ya One Time*

😎

i'm a card carrying member of both Twilight and Harry Potter nations. (not really, but you get the point)

however, i don't even come close to enjoying the nails-on-chalkboard screeching that's emitted from justin bieber

so, i'm not completely bubble-gum 🙂

Seriously! No ones on here for days and on my long day at work I miss all kinds of conversation. I've got my Harry Potter card as well, although for movies I'll take LOTR anyday of the week. I guess all of us old people have a little nerd in us. I've never read the Twilight series (my wife has, in a matter of days) but I've seen the first two movies and I can't believe Bella chose whiny Edward over Jacob.

scoutnj19- Is Wicked the book any good? I've seen the show but heard that the novel is a tough read.

Engineer2MD- If you quote any more Justin Beiber you risk being roundly mocked when we get together.😀

I guess all of us old people have a little nerd in us.
!! We will certainly get along well, then! I'm using these months to indulge in some of my own nerdery too. Though maintaining little bits here and there along the way will keep our sanity intact! I own most Harry Potter but haven't read them. They're in my queue haha

I guess I'm gold then for not knowing who Justin Beiber is.

And it seems I should check the mail! Novels???

I L-O-V-E to read as well, but I could not make it through the Twilight books. My rule is that I give a book 50 pages. If I'm not interested in it by then, probably won't be.

Word, I think I got to page 16 in Twilight and was like "This is stupid!"

But yes, I also like to express my inner nerd as well. I waited in line on opening night of Star Trek to get good seats. I bought my tickets online weeks in advance. 🙂 Then I bought it on blu-ray.

What has really made me nerdy lately is that I recently heard this math rule: Every even number is the sum of two prime numbers. Think about it. They can't prove it. They don't know why. I've been trying to come up with an exception to that rule for weeks now. LOL.

And hey, Justin Beiber makes my drive home fun! I get bored with the same old songs on 93.3 and 96.5.

Sweet about waiting for Star Trek! I did that for Star Wars ep 1...then felt cheated by Lucas' craptacular step down from the epicness of 4/5/6.

Currently on season 6 of watching the complete Star Trek TNG series. 😀 Even better than I remember it!

I'm a movie nut too, but even more so with anime. Some consider that even further up on the nerd spectrum, but so much of it is fabulously deep, beautiful, and artistic. Evangelion...CCS...Rurouni Kenshin...amazing. I'll sorely miss that addiction during school! Have to schedule some in now and then ^_^

Prime number rule...that totally blows my mind. I love that kind of thing! I wikihopped on 3/14 reading about how they calculate pi (it's not a simple fraction like I thought!) and the ppl who've memorized it out to hundreds of thousands of digits. Wow.

I haven't watched anime... but I'm game to try it sometime. Movies are great, too.

But if you want REAL nerd, I'll go ahead and admit this. I had been wanting an aquarium for YEARS. My husband bought me one for Christmas - a 36 gal bowfront. I literally spent WEEKS setting that thing up. I got out my biochemistry book and studied the nitrogen cycle and oxidation reactions that take place in an aquarium (The ammonia has to be oxidized to Nitrate via Nitrite - don't think I don't have diagrams of the mechanism) and then I spent about 8 weeks "cycling" the tank through the Nitrogen cycle without fish..... I had a whole water test kit..... kept a log of all my values organized by date.... Studied up on PH and how that affects the nitrogen cycle..... I am telling you. NERD-ALERT! People would say "Why don't you have fish yet?" and I would say "Because I'm growing oxidizing bacteria!" and they would look at me like I was "special."

Doc - I tried to read Wicked but dropped it after about 50 pages. I still feel guilty about it, like it's a book I SHOULD read. It just was hard and not very interesting. Maybe it gets better.

And go ahead and mock me :scared: cuz sometimes I listen to Miley Cyrus too. I am totally embarrassed to admit that. 🙁

That is so, so awesome! 👍

Ah... This is great! 🙂

I love Miley Cyrus. I listen to pretty much anything (except metal *shiver*). So, I know the lyrics to almost every Nelly (yes, the rapper) song and love love love Lady Antebellum. So, musically, I'm 'diverse.'

Movies... Let's just say my wife and I have an unhealthy habit of owning probably 300+ DVDs. I'm a sucker for bad movies... It takes a lot for me not to enjoy an entertaining film... Which is why I was shocked when I walked out of the theater when I saw Surrogates this past fall. Horrible. Just horrible. But I love the Harry Potter films. I love the two Twilights thus far. Star Wars is great. The new Star Trek was phenomenal... Which brings me to...

JJ Abrams!!!!! I own all the seasons of Alias and have seen them all about four times. It remains in the pantheon of top three or four shows ever. I don't care if it's totally not plausible... It paved the way for crazy plot shifts for televisions shows nowadays. So, I also like Lost and Fringe (although Fringe not so much). From my sig, you can see that The West Wing is my favorite tv show of all time... 🙂

And, as for 'Wicked,' it's decent. It's not an easy read, but that's the point. Don't expect Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel to hop out of the page. It's a little more gritty and meant to read like the original Wizard of Oz.

So, I've confessed my nerd-dom. Yes, when I was a kid, before bed each night, my dad read me The Lord of the Rings series.

I, too, have sadly "Partied in the U.S.A" a number of times. 🙂

Scout - good to hear you are also a Losty, brotha. I think LOST is probably my favorite show of ALL TIME. I love finding all the hidden clues in each episode and then going online to find out what other people have found. Makes me feel "smart."

I think JJ Abrams is years ahead of his time. Everything he does is wonderful. I'm not too much of a fan of Fringe, but it's at least decent.

I was a big fan of the XFiles.... any other "older" person remember that show?

I loved Alias. It kind of reminded me of LeFeme Nikita in a way. I also love Lost and will be sad to see it end, but can't wait to find out how!

My all time fav show is Frasier. I have all the seasons on DVD, and I pop them in while I study for background noise since I've watched them all a million times. 😳

Well, it is kind of a catchy tune that sticks in your head... and never finds a way out!

This part about the aquarium is AWESOME. I'm not even going to act like it doesn't impress me!

I think that all of us that are posting on here are going to get along just fine... can't wait to meet the rest of you in person - I already know Auriga... kind of. 🙂

Word, and Peace out.🤣

I concur, it sounds like we'll all get along just fine. I can't wait to meet everyone that will be around for second look. Got my tickets, now if they would get the details out.

I have a confession, since it appears I'm the only one. I've never seen Lost. That's not to say I'll never watch it, I'm just too impatient. I'll have to wait for the entire series to be on DVD so I can watch straight through.

You guys are killing me with the Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus. I thought I liked bad music since I love Nickelback, Hinder, generic rock bands that all sound alike. Hey, whatever you can sing along to.

I agree, I'm excited to meet you guys! And yes, I'd never have known about SDN if it weren't for RT2MD - so I both thank you wholeheartedly... and also blame you for my addiction 😉

We get the DVDs of series we really want to see, and don't have Cable. We surgically removed that temptation of getting hooked on too many things! That said, Lost looks like something that would have been an easy addiction. I've never watched more than a few minutes in patients' rooms at work. (That's how I got exposure to what's out there lol) It seems of the reality show genre, but it's scripted, is that kind of how it is? Is it actually any good, or just cliffhangingly addicting?

Everything JJ Abrams does turns to gold, it seems. Lost I wouldn't have been able to do if I hadn't seen the first season in one shot. Too many questions raised. Now even as the last episode approaches and "they" keep promising us answers, there are still a lot of questions I have! When it's all over, I'll have to start again from the beginning just to get the flow. As far as Alias, I was hooked up until Season 5, then for some reason I stopped. I might have to finish them up here before July, though.

I must admit to you all that I had no idea who Justin Bieber was until today. You all talked about him so much, I just had to look up a song or two on iTunes. He sounds like a girl!! I was so confused. Then I found a music video and saw that he's still a pre-pubescent boy; still a boy soprano.

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. Just re-read the 7th book, and I can't wait to see the first part this November. Yep, I'll probably be at the midnight showing- barring no big tests for us the following day.

Glad to hear you've been working hard Laryngo. 😉

Wish I had all this free time to go around watching TV and stuff. All I got is the internet during the downtime at work.

And they say parenthood is hard.

😀

Can anyone in the know or any current KU Med students shed some light on the tablet PC we are supposed to get? Is it a specific model that they choose or do we get to pick one ourselves?

I don't remember the exact model but I looked at one of the MS's computers while I was there to interview. It's an HP tablet, and the school gives it (read: included in fees) to us during the orientation period. They were adament that we not buy one because it comes pre-set up, with the programs and encryption we'll need already installed. The big plus of the school program is that tech support is included throughout the four years. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what you guys will be getting, but i'm assuming it'll be similar to what my year has...HP EliteBook 2730P. As doc2dr said, it comes pre-loaded with everything. They're decent computers, although i'm sick of staring at mine right now. As a side note, i have another computer that i use for just messing around on the internet and watching movies, since i like to spare my tablet for just school since it's supposed to last 4 years.
