Man this class has a rocking thread! Still keeping it alive with some information about second look. I am out of state so I called to confirm so I could get a room ect.., its on April 30th, check in is at 10am and it will last till 4ish. They will be sending out a detailed email later this week. I don't know a soul in Kansas City so I am looking forward to meeting everyone.

 I always figured your name on here was Keith O' KC, but now I realize it's Keith OKC. So I was confused when you said you didn't know anyone in KC.

And for everyone else....
Baby, baby, baby... OH! Baby, baby, baby OH! Baby, baby.....
OK now I'm just kidding. :meanie:

What exactly is the second look day about?

For those who have multiple acceptances the second look is a chance to revisit the school and compare your initial and final reactions. It's very helpful for many who might be traveling from very far away to visit the area and have another chance to assess if they'd be happy at a particular school. For someone who's set on KU? ...just something to do i suppose, meet people, and break up 100 days we have left to go.. 🙂

If its on the 30th it looks like I wont be able to attend. Gonna be hitting up some late season snowboarding in A-Basin.. Oh well!

I agree. It turns out that I'm no longer going to the conference that I was going to go to that week, so I WOULD be able to go... but my wife has her swearing in ceremony for her Kansas law license on that Friday... in Topeka. 🙂D for her, but 😡 for second look)

I should be back in town that evening, though. Maybe if a group is going to get together after the second look event then I can go.

I think it's funny that we still haven't gotten any information on the second look weekend, but we are getting emails asking for volunteers for it! 😀

98 days... but who's counting?

Finally inside the centennial. Thats an exciting thought. I can't even express how excited I am to have more of a singular (albeit more difficult) focus in my life. The last four years have been all over the place. Anyone else share that sentiment?

Definitely looking forward to meeting a lot of my fellow classmates on the 30th.

I agree that it will be nice to focus only on school (and family of course). The last four years have been full-time job plus other side jobs, plus pre-med courses, plus. . . I was constantly being pulled in 20 different directions. However, it was all worth it!

No second look for me, I had already scheduled myself to work that day. Maybe I can get someone to switch with me...hmm.

haha, I've been thinking this since I arrived at college! Very excited to primarily focus on learning medicine. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the second look either. 🙁 I'm not sure it would help lol, I've been to 6 of KU's "open house" events even though the info and tour are the exact same each time. 🙂 Anyways, I am looking forward to meeting you all in just a few short months!

Alright, second look info is finally out. For all of the old folks, and anyone else, that wants to get together Friday for dinner and drinks; I was looking at Country Club Plaza and there's a place called O'Dowds Little Dublin that looks decent. I'm not from KC so if anyone has somewhere better just let me know. See you in two weeks.

Hey guys! My name's Vincent and I'm really excited to meet you guys when we start school.

Is anyone looking for a roommate? No joke - if I don't find one, my crazy clingy Asian parents are bound to move in with me.

I'm easy to get along with provided you're a friendly and open-minded person. I enjoy drawing, jokes, and nice people. 🙂

Also, does anyone know if there is a way to filter our KUMC inboxes? I appreciate being notified about various events on campus, but it'd be nice to direct these to a separate folder so I can easily find those messages that are immediately relevant to our class.

Thanks!

O'Dowds would be perfect!
It CAN get loud in there on weekend nights - and it shifts over to a real "bar" atmosphere later in the night. But, it would be a great place if everyone is ok with it 🙂

We would need reservations, and I'm happy to set that up if you'd like since you're coming from a distance..... let me know what you think!

Who all is in? I'm in for 2 (myself and my husband)

I'm definitely in! Myself plus husband. Looking forward to meeting everyone!!! I live in KC but have never been there - sounds fun ^_^

Go ahead and set it up. I've got two as well. I'm so ready to get to KC. Excited to meet everyone then spend the rest of the weekend finding a place to live.

Also, I wasn't sure as to the dress code for second look so I emailed Jason. He said business casual. Just in case anyone else had the same question.

What time were you all planning on going to O'Dowds? My wife doesn't get off of work until 4ish, so we were questionable about being able to come to the official 'after-party.'

By the way... check your KUMC email addresses. They sent out some immunization and health insurance info yesterday. We all need to get titers, physicals, show proof of insurance, etc.

From what I can tell, you can have your PCP do your physical and such, but the titers are the cheapest at KUMC since they do so many of them. You have to call to set up an appointment, but they only charge like $73 instead of other places charging nearly four or five times that. Insurance doesn't cover the titers, so that's the biggest issue.

But otherwise, get the stuff done and it's another step toward finally starting at KU Med.

Business casual?!?!? I was going to wear jeans! 😱

I didn't realize insurance didn't cover titers. That.... is not cool.

What time do you guys want to meet up at O'Dowds? The thing ends at 4:00, so we could head on over there right after, or we could wait until "dinner time", or later, etc. Makes no difference to me. Any preferences?

Alright, so my wife's thing gets over in plenty of time for me to make it back for O'Dowds. We will both be there. I don't know if my wife is going to go back to the office for a bit before we head over or not, but we will be there eventually (in time for dinner)!

As far as time goes, I guess we could make the reservation at 4:30ish (or whatever) and just hold off on ordering dinner until everybody gets there. Just an idea... any other thoughts?

I have to agree with you. The last four years have been all over the map for me as well. School, work, family, selling a house, buying a house, putting my wife through school, essays, applications, etc... ugh. Even though it will be much more intense, I'm happy to finally be getting to focus on only two things really - Family and School.

I also am excited to get into medicine. Everyday that I work with these med students and residents gets me more and more anxious to start!

See you guys at the end of the month! Sorry some people can't make it!

I was planning on comfy clothes too...oh well!

430 sounds good, then we can chill until everyone's ready to order.

Thanks for the info on the titers email - I keep forgetting to check that email!

Glad u can make it, RT! ^_^ It's been a while. Did you ever hear from anyone else who was applying this year or last? Not sure if you knew Lauren from the other class, but she's at the DO school in Kirksville and loves it.

The only person that I have talked to was Katlin. She hadn't heard back from anybody in town, although she had an interview in Texas that went really well. I haven't talked to her for a few months, though.

I didn't know Lauren, but I do know some people who went to that same school... they all loved it, and are pretty darn good doctors now!😀

i'd check with your physician and insurance company. mine were mos def covered

I have a BCBS PPO and for whatever reason they weren't covered.. But definitely check.

Ok I just checked with my insurance and it's covered through Aetna. But, I am on my husband's plan which is unusually good.

Yea, government Aetna plans are ridiculously awesome. My dad worked at West Point for a while and is now in DC, and his plan is the best I've ever seen.

And I worked for the state of Massachusetts with their health insurance initiative, so I've seen a lot of plans.

I'm glad that the titers are covered for some. I'm headed to the Student Health Center tomorrow and coughing up the $70 to get them done.

I'm just happy I can cross it off the list of things to do.

Also, financial aid awards have been given out. Check your emails.

OK I'm going to set up the reservations at O'Dowds today for Friday evening. The consensus seems to be meeting up at 4:30 and then if people filter in late, that's cool.

So, for 4:30 on Friday at O'Dowd's on the Country Club Plaza, I have:

Doc + 1
Engineer + 1
Auriga + 1
Scout + 1 (maybe)
RT + 1
Jaydoc + 1

That makes 12. I will set the reservations for 14 just in case. I will put it under "KU School of Medicine."

Looking forward to meeting all of you on Friday!!!!

Thanks for making that reservation! Can't wait to meet some of you guys!

As far as the scholarship goes, I would think it would... But I have no idea.

OK.... just called about the reservation.

They "don't take" reservations. But at 4:30 on Friday, it "shouldn't be too terrible." He said I could call ahead and they would "put us on the list."

Do you guys still want to try it?

Oh yeah, I think that it should be fine that early. My vote is just call ahead... Or we can just show up... Any other thoughts?

Am I to assume that if we were awarded a scholarship it would show up there?

When I spoke with financial aid, they said they hadn't received any information from the scholarship committee. They said it would be another few weeks before they were notified of those individuals receiving scholarships.

I don't think we'll have any problem just showing up. If everyones planning on going over right after second look concludes we'll be there before the rush.

OK cool. We'll just show up then. I might call about 3:30 so they KNOW we are coming for sure. I'm Engineer2freakingMD and I don't wait on nobody!!! 😉 ha ha

So I freaked out and about had a panic attack over my financial aid package. I went to talk to Laura Dean in the financial aid office and she made me feel SO MUCH better. We got a good plan and I'm much calmer now. She did say that the scholarships haven't been decided on yet, so she doesn't have any of that information at this point. Be aware though if you get a scholarship, they will probably reduce one of your loans - you won't get "extra" money or anything.

Fellow Girls - what are you wearing on Friday? They said "buisness casual." I'm thinking pants, a cardigan, and some sandals. And make my husband wear a shirt and khaki's.

See you Friday!

That's my husband wardrobe plan also - boys are so easy to dress!

I plan on wearing black pants and a regular shirt, nothing button-up or fancy. I'm leaning more towards the business-plain-but-comfy black shoes over the supercute sandals, but we'll see what strikes me Friday morning!

I was a little concerned about the financial aid thing too. Did you file an appeal for them to not take your income into consideration in the FAFSA EFC?

ANyone hearing anything from the Post-bac program?:xf:

I was wondering the same thing...

It looks like last year they heard on May 1st. I would say April 30th or May 3rd will be when they'll send the notification(s) out.

Good luck!

That's what I'm saying! We say "Hi, yeah, we're KUSOM class of 2014..." and they bend over backwards for us!

I thought when we interviewed, the financial aid talk we heard was pretty much that everyone is offered around $40,000. Can I ask why you were freaked out? I had not been freaked out and maybe I should be?

Thanks for the scholarship update, any little bit would help!

How is everyone bridging the $9,800 gap. Grad plus loans?

Bascially I freaked out because of that $9800 gap. Then I started panicking because I thought maybe that was because of my income. Then I ran the numbers - with my loans and interest - how much I will owe when I graduate med school and what the repayment would be. DON'T DO THAT. IT'S MORE THAN A HOUSE.

Then I went to financial aid. I found out that I can file an income appeal if I want, but it's not going to change anything for me. My husband has a good job and we are kind of "penalized" for being married.

Short of a divorce, my financial aid isn't going to change. So I had to get to a point where I was ok with that. 🙂

I personally think Powerball is an excellent solution. 🙂

I think I will visit too. Perhaps I'll drop by Friday, even. The gap is what had me freaked out a little too. My husband's job is in a transitional state. So I'm going to file, but it looks like my fin aid probably won't change either since we seemed to get the whole 40k. I've done our family budget with car payments etc and it's stretching it a little. Not really wanting to go from cooking fresh veggies and meat back to ramen noodles and PB&J, as tasty as those may be.

I did the calculations once too, and after a few sweat drops, looked at how long it would take to pay off with a physician salary, even primary care. It won't be all that awful. But still it's a beast.

Hopefully we all get at least some scholarship $ and can enjoy a little less stress at the end ^_^

Wow, Page 21!

So you guys just basically freaked out, and then said OK...I'll just stretch the budget and/or depend on your spouse?

Is there anyone that's financially single that needs to find additional funding?

Lol, Grad Plus it is... you married people and your spouses...ugh...where's a suga' mama when you need one? 🙂

I recieved almost 44k (single financially)... is that pretty consistent with everyone else? With tuition right around 25k, thats about 19k to live off of. Hope thats enough! Made me freak out at first

Maybe any of you current students can provide some insight

I wouldn't say I have a suga' daddy. 😉 Actually, in my case, having his income really screwed up my financial aid. Let's just say it would've been MUCH better had I been single with a reported income of ZERO.

What the FA lady told me was that there is not a ton of real aid for medical students. (Hence unsubsidized for some) They kind of expect, since you will have a "good job" that you can pay it back.

Maybe I need to bring this up on the non-trad forum, but is anyone else who is married having trouble with the transition back to student-life, financially I mean? My husband has worked VERY hard for the great position he has now. He's up for promotion this year, etc. I feel like he's earned a good standard of living. But then I have to say, "Nope, we're selling our house, moving somewhere cheaper, and we have to eat ramen noodles and frozen pizza for the next 4 years." It's not a big stressor for us right now, I just feel bad about it.

Thoughts?

I can relate. I've gone from being the primary income, to being a student but very fortunate with the GI Bill and a wife with a great job. Now I'm looking at these massive loans, no office for my wife to transfer to so she has to find something new, and as with you, a significant change to the way we live. I hate that my wife has to give up a job she was fast-tracking in, especially in this economy. I know it will be worth it in the end but it feels like I've taken a step backward for now. Had I not left my first career I would have retired in 9 years. Now in 9 years I'll either still be in residency or finally practicing and making a house payment to sallie mae each month.

pkp...did you get any scholarships? I thought the max was 40,500... What was your break down of subsidized to unsubsidized loans?

I think the max is 8500 subsidized and max 12k unsubsidized federal direct loans. Then unsub MED loan for the rest up to total 40,500. You guys? Maybe they already took the division of income into consideration, it was included in the FAFSA...

The thing is that after paying tuition, fees, books, school supplies etc, it's like bringing home 11k a year as income.

I am right on the same page with you, Engineer2MD. (I can't wait to meet you friday! ^_^) So that I could go back to school FT and only have to work PT, my husband worked overtime (and did all the laundry dishes etc, what a prince!) so we could stay afloat. It's not like we live anywhere close to extravagantly - but we don't have to scrape for ramen noodles either. Rent and car and groceries and utilities and crap adds up. We VERY MUCH had to sacrifice to go from two FT jobs so I could go back... if we have to sacrifice even more for the next 4 years it really will suck. I plan to look for at least a little additional loan money. I'll pay it off ASAP after residency rather than drag it out, of course, but I don't want to be afraid about finances along the way.
