Best of luck. The interview day is great and everyone from the faculty, staff, and student tour guides were very friendly. The campus/facilities are excellent.

Just curious (if you had interviews at other Florida schools)....how do the facilities compare to the other 5 schools in the state?

No problem. I interviewed last cycle at UCF. The building was not done yet so we drove by in the van coming back from the hospital tour. Was waitlisted and almost got in. I visited this summer and the building was done...was awesome...excellent anatomy lab.

Even though FSU's building is a bit older (maybe 5 years older), still looked brand new! Classrooms (lecture halls) were very spacious and the Learning Community rooms were great, too (equipped with kitchen, lounging area, lockers, copier, etc). I was very impressed to say the least.

The technology between both schools is very comparable. As well as the faculty, staff, and students being very friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

Yeah, I interviewed here back in October. I was really impressed with the building, especially the learning community rooms. Back then, I wondered if that was the norm for medical schools these days. I've heard UCF has excellent facilities as well. I'm hoping for an interview there too.

FIU was aiming to do a similar thing with the learning communities.

As far as technology and facilities, most of that is really flash more than anything else. Doesn't really do much for the education. When you're going on tours it does look nice and we do use it, but I'd say I'm yet to encounter a school that uses the technology they have to the fullest. They try to integrate it in things and it just becomes kind of awkward.

It always seemed like the anatomy lab is where most people are wowed. Those facilities make or break it for some people. You just have to remember that it is one class and the vast majority of the time your head is down cutting and fumbling through a greasy Netters or Atlas trying to figure out what you're looking at. The most important thing is whether they have good ventilation. If you're tall then adjustable tables or chairs that are a proper height are a nice bonus. My back and neck were usually killing me from hunching over all that time. It is probably one of the reasons I hated being in that lab.

The LC's are probably my favorite part of the school. I honestly can't imagine my first 2 years of medical education without them. I keep books here, have tons of food here, we joke around, nap, have meetings. Schools really feels more like a home/office than "school". It makes it easier for me to spend countless hours here when I feel like I have my own space. Some people don't like that and many people just study at home, so it doesn't affect them. I truthfully can't imagine med school if it were just a place to go to lecture and then dragging my stuff into the library to study, packing back up and leaving. I don't even take my back pack home usually....I've actually kind of annexed my own little study carrel even. I have an actual name tag on it. We're even going to bring in a mini fridge so we don't have to go upstairs. 😛

Another thing that is a benefit, but will become much more so, is that we have showers in each LC. By the time the class of 2015 is starting up, we will have a "Wellness Center". I'm on the committee to try and decide what to put in it, but it is basically going to be a simple gym upstairs so you don't feel like you have to fight with undergrads or drive somewhere else when you want to burn off some energy.

A recommendation for the wellness center, from a male's stand point, is to have plenty of free weights. Like squat racks, benches, dumbbells, etc. Too many places just load up on cardio machines and gimmick devices.

MossPoh, can the Wellness Center include full court basketball? 😀

I have my CSCS and have ordered equipment for gyms before. This "Wellness Center" is going to be on the 4th floor. They are trying to pull some crap with not allowing plates. I'm trying to lobby for at least 265 pounds of plates (4x45, 2x25, 2x10, 2x5, 2x2.5) and a solid power rack with sturdy flat benches and at least one adjustable one. I'd also like something like a functional trainer from magnum fitness. I'd be kind of distraught if they didn't want to throw down for that and got a ton of ellipticals or mono-use devices that cost more.

I haven't had a tour of the space yet, but I highly doubt it is going to be big enough to have multiple power racks. (Squat racks are technically different and offer less flexibility in use) I would really like to know what kind of budget we will have to work with. This is intended for faculty, staff AND students. I already stated that my biggest fear was that it'd turn into the equivalent of a hotel "gym" with 3 treadmills, 6 ellipticals, a bike, bowflex and a bosu ball. That was why I was chosen as one of the people.

Trust me, if it were up to me, we'd have olympic weight lifting platforms, dumbbells up to 150 or so, safety squat bars, cambered bars, dead lift bars, texas power bars, thick bars, axels, sand bags, 600+ pounds of plates, and enough metal to blow the ear drums out a few floors down. I don't think they'd let me do that though. If you do want tires, sleds, and real stuff then I can show the way to it though. The FSU weightlifting club has strongman days and powerlifting days. Oddly enough, the powerlifting days are held at FAMU gym. (I guess most of you don't know...I'm not exactly "tiny". I used to be a lot bigger and stronger than I am now, but I'm definitely not some cardio bunny hipster type. 😉 )

Haha. Good stuff. Hopefully they at least let you put the 265 lbs of plates and a power rack in there. Seems like they chose the right person for the job when they chose you.

You are definitely the right man for the job Moss. I sincerely hope they give you enough leeway to set up a decent gym rather than a crapfest of cardio equipment that is twice as expensive and no one will use. Good luck. And I mean that.

haha thanks. I will see about the smoothie machine too. 😉

I just hope they are receptive to it. I really don't feel like it is truly intended for everyone without 3 major parts. A variety of cardio equipment (including a recumbent bike for people with bad backs), an open area for yoga, stretching, tai chi...whatever, and some basic weights and body weight equipment.

If there is absolutely NO budging on the weights, then I'm going to see about at least having some TRX suspension things, pull up bars, dip bars, plyo boxes and maybe a glute ham raise or something.

while it is a great Idea to have a full gym up there, I dont think the space is big enough, (no on from our class has seen the size of the wellness center) but I dont think it is that big.

good news for alot of people, more study spaces are going to be up there!! great for exam week!!

I love the LC and the conference room, i am in one right now studying and having the whole room to myself 😀

Some of the class has seen the space. From what I've heard there isn't enough room for free weights. The idea of resistance training things has been proposed though, so hopefully you can keep up those muscles, mosspoh 🙂

I'm just excited to have somewhere upstairs I can go work out in instead of walking to the gym. and by that, I mean, I don't walk to the gym, so maybe now I'll actually work out 🙂

(locus, do you notice how we both post a lot more during exam weeks? :d)

I have officially been up there. It is technically big enough to have weights. Of course, some of the world's greatest powerlifters kept their equipment in rental storage and single car garages. Actually, if there weren't weight restrictions and objections from others, I could turn that space into one bad***** lifting zone. You could EASILY fit 2 power racks with deadlifting platorms, 2 competition grade bench presses, weight storage, a GHR,dumbells, kettle bells, bar storage and even several pieces of cardio equipment and an area to do walking lunges.

That being said, it doesn't seem like they are going to allow it. They are going to verify for sure what weight we can get by with in dumbells (hoping for up to 65ish). As it currently stands, we are looking at 3 or so bikes, 2-3 treadmills, 2-3 ellipticals, an ab work type area with med balls, etc., a cross over machine with pull up bars, ab straps to hang off the pull up bar, heavy bag, some dumbbells, 2 flat benches, 1 adjustable bench, 1 decline and open areas. There will be 2x50 inch LCD tvs with the capability to hook your laptop up to for whatever purpose, whether workout videos or lectures. The yoga type area with mats. Foam rollers. Maybe a leg press machine. Jump ropes. Some fixed weight straight barbells.

It is pretty much everything the vast majority of female students would want and enough for most guys. I feel that I could go up there and do some intense circuits for 35+ minutes and still burn off energy, shower and get back to studying. Would I give up my gym membership for it? Nope, but it would make those off days where I can't do real lifting a bit better.

Honestly, that seems like more than enough equipment to get a pretty great work out in. I especially like the addition of the heavy bag. I've done martial arts for years, and I about back-flipped with happiness when you said that . I can get a great work out on just a bag, an ab area and some leg exercises with dumbells/barbells.

Good job mate. Really seems like it will be a nice area to burn off some steam in. I know I will be using it when I get up there.

I have a question about the laptops we get. Are those considered personal computers and not just for school-related things only? I'm asking this because right now my laptop is pretty old and I may want to get a new one before school starts just for personal use if we cannot use the one given to us for personal use.

Supposed to be or personal use too within reason. Some people do more than others. I try to keep mine a mostly school computer.

Sam, as far as EKGs go, if you know where the leads are and where the current is supposed to go then you figure out each one fairly easily. People WAY overcomplicate the stuff.

I interviewed at FSU on Monday (1/24). Can anyone who has been accepted confirm that they release their decisions ~2 weeks post interview, as Mrs. Urrutia said?

That is correct.

That is correct.

Unless your faculty can't make the next meeting, then you have to wait until the next time they meet.

I found out in 9 days, some people have to wait a month or so. Overall pretty quickly though. Good luck!

:d

On the plus side, I think I finally got ecg down today.

On the not so plus side, I give my first male genitorectal exam in the morning....

It was no big deal the GU/prostate exam!! :nono:

I remember last year that the most awkward part wasn't the actual exam, but rather the lead up to it and some of the things that were said during it. The doctor asked me if I could feel the superior pole and I kind of nodded and she said, "Well, make sure. Just tuck your elbow in, tell the patient you are going to 'advance forward' and then put your weight into it." as I sat there like I was plugging a hole in a dam with my index finger.

I was just thinking to myself, "The last thing this guy probably wants to hear is "put your weight into it" with a 6'5", 265 pound person attempting to 'advance forward' as if we were talking military strategy"

Sam, your SDN posts seem to have increased dramatically this week. 😉

Accepted here.

When will I receive the financial aid package? When do I need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? Thanks.

Does FSU send out financial aid packages? I've been accepted, but I've only gotten emails for need-based scholarships. I guess these are the only scholarships available?

I got accepted so close to the orientation that I don't know for sure, but pretty much everything I did was online. They do give money for tons of different things, but you have to have you fafsa complete usually.

Of course my posts have increased- I have an exam tomorrow!

You apply for scholarships over the summer. you have to fill out parent info to qualify for school funding.

my immunization record such as polio and DTaP can not be found because I dit them outside of the U.S. when I was a child. What should I do? Check the titers?

The number one answer for any type of question like that will always be to call and ask.

Did you go to school in the US? Most schools from elementary through to at least high school have record of your immunizations. I had to call my old high school and get them mailed and then I still had some missing from the list. I just went and got titers.

Thanks, MossPoh.

Can I check the titers in FSU student health center during the orientation days?

A lot of people finished up their immunization requirements during orientation, so that should be fine. But definitely call and ask. I've heard them handling different cases in different ways, so that way you know you'll be covered 🙂

Exactly.

For the people like me, who were accepted late, there really was no other option. You basically have the entire summer to get your vaccination stuff in line. The major goal is to have everything in before you see patients of any sort. Some people were still working on stuff in the fall, but they were the exception. The preceptor stuff starts in the spring of MS1, but you will interact with people for CSSC or for various volunteer things.

The one vaccination you really don't need to worry about as of now is your yearly flu shot. We actually stick each other for that one. If you get it beforehand it isn't a big deal. You just show proof.

PPD is probably the biggest pain of the bunch. Once you know the docs here, someone will oftentimes sign off on your ppd form if you're nice.

MossPoh, go study. Now who's the one spending exam week time on SDN? :d

I always spend too much time not studying. I leave my computer upstairs and study downstairs usually. (Except when I do Uworld questions) I also frontloaded my studying really hard, so all I'm REALLY left with is the random memorization stuff. Unlike other people, I put in about 32+ hours from Friday to Sunday night. 😉

They had us do a bunch of crap today...and tomorrow. I suspect tomorrow is going to be a bit of a squandered day around 11:30 or so.

Ugh tomorrow is Tuesday. I hate Tuesdays. Upcoming first years will too.

Hey all,
I received an invite for 2/7/11. I am so excited and place FSU COM high on my list. Does anyone have any advice for me? It is my first med interview and I am nervous. I know most of you have experienced this before. I didn't expect to get this invite but I am extremely pleased. Any comments/advice would be helpful.🙂

Just be yourself! FSU really likes kind, compassionate people. They don't necessarily pick the 'cookie cutter' med student, so typically just being genuine is the best advice 🙂

Best of luck! See you around on Monday!

Hey do u mind sharing when u were complete???

I received an invite this afternoon, complete 10/4.

Since I just received an interview last week for 2/7/11, is it bad to assume I still have a good chance at getting in. I was very excited about the interview initially and plan to be my charismatic/extroverted self, but I have an awful feeling that an interview this late in the process has a terrible chance at acceptance. 🙁

I guess there is some common misconceptions about medschools filling their class early being perpetrated in the premed world, but I will do my best to alleviate some of your apprehension with what I know to be true. Many schools, even ones with rolling admissions, do not fill their class until March or even April. To my knowledge, the only school in Florida that has filled their class at this point is FIU. If you get an interview at any medical school, assure yourself that you are a competitive applicant and you do have a shot at nabbing a spot in the class. Premeds are fortunate if a medical school interviews 15% of the students that submit applications. If you are invited to an interview you have a good shot at being accepted. Most schools accept between 40-65% of the people they interview.

Be confident and good luck.

If anything, they will be more apprehensive after last year's fiasco. They did reach their limit a lot faster than expected last year. They had a few spots locked off, but many more people were waitlisted the second half of the year. When I talked to one of the admissions people during the open house I was told they were pretty surprised how many people took the acceptance.

Nearly all schools overaccept, but they do so based on the historical data. They have a pretty solid average for what percentage of people will take the offer versus those going elsewhere. The random outlier year can throw a wrench in that calculation though.
