Hey everyone! More good info to share with the waitlist party =D

I got a response from Ms. Urrutia just now for my other questions:

Now I'm really hoping 60 people drop so we all get in =P it'd be pretty amazing if I could see mskar, london and sisterdisco all at FSU next year

Let's just all live together guys, I'm still looking for roomies.

Not at FSU but there are adcom members who do post on these forums. UCF's REL Larkin formerly of USF started posting on these forums as far back as 6 years ago in the summer when he was still with USF med.

Dr. Robert Hinkley has created accounts in the past several times both when he was at UMiami and now at FAU. He's also gone inside SDN chats where he's witnessed students take stabs at him because his daughter was an alma mater of Umiami when he was there and he had some license plate that was offensive to them that alluded to her. I think the gist of it was they thought she had nepotism help her get where she did if I recall from what he told me years ago.

So its not as far fetched to think an adcom member can post on here.

But many of them who do make it clear they are an adcom member though they may or may not tell where they are from.

Like LizzyM won't say her school name but she is very clear she's an adcom member at the school she is at.

A lot of adcom members read these forums by lurking but don't say stuff on here.

But on that note............

I AGREE THAT YOU ALL WILL MAKE AN AWESOME SUPPORTIVE CLASS!!!!! Two 👍 👍 to that statement.

I've seen quite a supportive overall atmosphere in this FSU thread, and if that's anything to go by you will have a great experience coming in here in the fall. 🙂

Hopefully we all get off teh waitlist at schools we are all waiting for and get at least one acceptance coming out of this cycle.
It's incredible for someone knowing that much insider info about adcom members. That smells like you're intimately seeking favoritism...

Way to go, guju 😎... no surprise!

You all make me laugh 🙂

This school would be lucky to get such helpful, enthusiastic people. I hope you all get in 😀

Thanks!!! haha i hope we all get in as well!!! 😛 Maybe more people will go elsewhere than FSU anticipated, I sure hope so!

it's too bad FSU doesn't have students serving on it's admissions committee hahaha

i was thinking about it though, and we might be lucky cause FAU might steal some of FSU's acceptances... so the opening of another med school in Florida might help us out. haha

LOL good point. I guess time will tell. may 15th is around the corner. 9 days til May 15th, 10 til May 16th. A mere week and a half. Let's keep crossing our fingers and keep praying. BTW wow, can't believe its that time of the year when new AMCAS is open up again and cycle starting over again. Hard to believe last 9 months have gone by so fast. But glad its almost over. Let's just pray the outcome is to our liking.

Definitely!!!!

The other thing that crossed my mind, related more to FSU is: I was wondering whether this 60 person hold list was determined this week or whether it was 60 people all along..

if you look at the two emails Dana sent me, it seems that out of the 300+ that interviewed, 163 were NOT offered an acceptance. Does that mean they handed out 100 rejections post interview? Or are they rejecting people now as per Dana's quote: "We are also in the process of sending notifications to applicants whom we know we will not be offering acceptances to this year. All of those however have not been sent. You are not however, one of those."'

I feel like they must have put MOST people on the Hold list (with a few post-interview rejections of course but not 100...) and now they're cutting the list down from ~150 to 60....

Or are they simply sending out the rejection letters to those that weren't invited to interview? i just thought it was interesting...

also, (and I know this is going off old data and more people are choosing FSU than in the past, but maybe with FAU opening it might be a different story... but anyway)

if you looked at the fall 2008 admission statistics (they're the most recent ones I have, unless someone else has the 2009 or 2009), 216 were accepted out of the 362 that interviewed...

so applying that to the current known info Dana gave me...

339 were interviewed and 176 were accepted so far...

216-176 = 40 more acceptances!

just an observation!

Idk guys, they might not offer as many acceptances. Hope they do though!

I'd spend less time doing the math. 😉 It just screws with your head. We are only 10 years old and have only been at full class size for a couple of years, so we don't have the historical data some places have to run off of.

Just go do something to occupy your time and hope for the best. 😛

way to much thinking and guessing going on in this thread!! 1 more week left
good luck to the people on the waitlist :xf:

:hello: Hi Dana!!

:hello: Hi Dana!!

yeah lol i know just posting things that came to my mind randomly. lol

Wasn't the FAU campus just a UM branch campus type deal before? I was under the impression that was why it was much easier to get things going for them.

yeah im pretty sure that's how it worked. They just separated and became their own med school... everything was pretty much set up though.

But I'm pretty sure that does mean a bunch of spots opened up at FAU which basically means more people in Florida got into med school this year (even if the people who got in got into like UF or UM, that means UM or UF will accept other people off their waitlists which may be those who had acceptances to FSU and etc. etc.)

once again more speculation haha but at this point in time (week before may 16th, what isn't speculation? haha)

Haha, guys, I got an email today from Dana that says there is absolutely nothing left that we can do, and that she assures me if we wait and continue to be patient we will know as soon as she does.

Also, excerpt of a letter I sent in today with my final semester grades:

"For the duration of my time as a Hold applicant, I have had the pleasure of fostering connections with current FSUCOM students, so as to gain an "insider's view" of life at the College. I have found that the more I learn of FSUCOM, the more certain I am of my decision to pursue the College as my chief academic interest. I have also had the opportunity to communicate with other Hold applicants, through which I have glimpsed the daunting task that is your upcoming selection. However, what is most striking to me is the cooperation and support we have exhibited toward each other as prospective students. I believe this communal networking to be a characteristic unique to students drawn to FSUCOM, and it is a high-ranking reason driving my desire to become a Seminole."

Wow very very nice!!! haha I think there are a couple things I can still do. Since I was such a late hold I'm submitting my LOI tomorrow. lol good luck sisterdisco and everyone else! just a couple more days!!

😛 yeah you're kind of an exception. Definitely send in an LOI and update, etc. But after that, not much to do but wait!

Given the boot today via email...LOL honestly don't care. I had my worst interview here and really thought I would be miserable living in Tallahassee. I also met someone from the admissions office last week at another school's 2nd look and told them I hated it here, that probably contributed.

Good luck to those of you waiting, I really hope those of you who have posted incessantly get in. I know what waiting for that first acceptance feels like.

  I love the sig change. 🙂

Thx Guju! Btw, got an acceptance call from UCF today and didn't take it. So at least they are somewhere within the lower half of the upper 1/3. I REALLY hope you get in there! :xf:

Just wondering but when did you interview? And were you rejected outright post interview? Or were you put on hold and then just now notified of a rejection? thanks!

Interview way back in December and put on Hold in December.

Oh online gender assumptions, how fun you are.

My roommate's girlfriend was playing a game on xbox live a few years ago and someone said, "Shut up you f****** middle schooler. You can't say anything until your balls drop!"

She then replied, "That may be a while, since I'm a chick and all."

*Few seconds of silence with explosions and gunfire from the game*

Same guy, "You sound hot......"

Lol same assumption made with me on here. I said I was planning to accept the NAVY HPSP scholarship and everyone assumed I was a guy...Lol

haha hence gender implied in my handle--happens to be one of my favorite songs by The Who

Oddly enough, the current graduating class and my class both have a majority female doing HPSP. I think we have one guy and 3 or 4 girls that I can think of who are doing it in my class. I'm not sure about class of 2012.

dang i wish they told us where we were on the waitlist. I'd feel a lot better knowing I have no chance cause I'm #60 or something lolol

Instead I just have to hope and pray I'm in the top 10! ahhh i wanna get in so bad! lol

Just a few more days I guess.... :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck: to everyone!!!

Well if what Dana said is true they've already told the really low people that they prolly won't get spots 🙂 hopefully we hear next week!!!!

Well from what I gathered (from the email she sent me) it seemed like they put most of the people they didn't outright accept on "Hold" throughout the year.

Then after finishing up all interviews and offering acceptances, they trimmed the "Hold" group down to a 60 person waitlist.

So those of us that didn't get the rejection email are in that group of 60. Unfortunately we don't know where we are on that list (and I don't want to seem annoying and send Dana another email trying to pry - patience is a virtue!) and if they're expecting to accept 20-30 (just a guess I know) if I'm like in spot like 52-58 out of the 60 then my odds are quite low. It'd just be nice to know if my odds are really low. lol

I know this is just paranoia, over-thinking it and too much worrying and stressing over something I can't control, but I can't help it! haha I really want to be at FSU next year

oh well, I know I'll definitely be happy for mskar, london and sisterdisco WHEN they get their acceptances!!!!! :luck: to you guys/gals!

You know, in a way, all of your anxiety and desire about the issue gives me a little more energy to study for step 1. It makes me reflect a bit on how lucky I am and to just suck it up and jam those random factoids into every little spot in my brain...well, those ones that are more accepting of jamming. The other ones, they have to be sweet talked a bit.

aw thanks!! that put a smile on my face 🙂 you will be on that list too! in other news, it's ALMOST May 15! this may be the hardest part of the waiting game, but we are sooooo close

Ha, yeah, I would say it's not the best idea to ask Dana about our positions/likelihood--she made it very clear in the email to me that there is nothing else she can tell us and that as soon as she knows about each of us she will let us know.

I'm sure we will all get in. because i say so.

Chang, hang in there, man; we're sooo close. You just have to have faith at this point that we're all gonna make it. Disco, I dig your fervor. Be strong, my friends!

Thankfully, I will be too busy for the next couple days to worry about all of this. I'm leaving tomorrow morning to drive up to Mountain City, GA for Warrior Dash. If you don't know what that is, look it up; I'm super stoked 🙂

And MossPoh, good luck on Step 1!

DUDE! WARRIOR DASH!? SICK!!

I've heard of it but have never been able to participate. It looks super fun though haha have fun! That's definitely an awesome distraction. I need to find something to distract me, haha

@MossPoh I'm glad my anxiety and desire is helping someone! At least it's doing good for you! haha

Hey guys,
I wish all of you luck on the waitlist and hope everything works out. Having said this, I was admitted in February and have been so excited since then. Recently however, approaching orientation is scaring the hell out of me. For those of you who have made it through year one, I was just wondering if you guys could give me some reality, peace of mind, or harsh truth. I am a non-science major and haven't had micro, genetics or anatomy(I have had a lot of chemistrys including biochem) and I am worried I wont cut it. I don't want to fail MSI. I am an obsessive worrier as I am sure many are in medical school but I have heard such good things from the students and staff at FSU that I hope I will make it through. I feel like I am just doubting myself like usual, but were any of you scared you wouldn't cut it or have any of you failed miserably on anything? Do they give you a lot of help if you need it? How is adjusting from undergrad? Sorry for all of the questions, I am just very anxious and excited. I want to do well in medical school and am just looking for insight from the experts. Especially since we start in less than three weeks! Thanks.

Let me begin by saying that I am not currently a med student at FSU, but will be soon along with yourself as a part of C/O 2015 😀.

I definitely share some of your anxiety. From someone who was in fact a science major in undergrad, let me assure you that I sincerely believe most of the classes I have taken will be absolutely useless in medical school (For real, who really cares about the ecology of waterborne pathogens? lol). I think we will be on more similar footing academically than you currently expect 🙂.

Furthermore, as I now have way too much free time on my hands, I have been doing a lot of research into different fields of medicine. I definitely see myself as going into a couple of fields that are currently considered Uber-competitive, so I feel some pressure to perform even though school hasn't even started yet.

I only mentioned these things to qualify my following remarks. I have been told by many medical students at FSU that our future alma mater does a great job of slowly integrating you the medical culture and allowing you to build up your study skills and techniques rather than throwing the book at you-slamming you with too much information all at once. That was one of the main selling points of FSU for me over the other schools I was accepted at. FSU splits up its first year, doing anatomy, radiology and some doctoring over the summer to allow you to grow accustom to the workload of medical school and get to know your class mates in a low-stress environment.

Anyways before I get too wordy and people reading this post start disliking me , I definitely feel some of your anxiety, but my advice? Relax. Enjoy the free time you have left by doing something fun and exciting every day. And of course make sure you have all the Loan stuff and enrollment checklist completed 🙂.

See you soon friend!

Anxiety about starting med school is definitely normal. I'm a pretty big worrier too and felt the same way.

The adjustment period is a bit different for everyone, so I won't try to guess how it will be for the new first years. But I promise, you will get through it. If you do run into trouble, the teachers are very approachable and always willing to help. There's also a counseling center just for the med students that lots of students utilize, either just to talk, or to develop study habits.

I'm sure nothing I say will alleviate all your worries, but I hope that hearing someone who just finished M1 say that you'll be just fine will help a little 🙂

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about specifics.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this anxiety one of the reasons why FSU starts in the summer? To decompress the year and make it less stressful for the first year students? Would you say that your first year was less stressful than your friends' at other schools?

A few Q's for anyone that can answer:

-Do we really have to fill out the Dosage and Doctor/Clinic part on the COM immunization form?

-Do most students just buy the textbooks at the campus bookstore? What about the scrubs? Should we order these things online before orientation starts? Where from?

-What is the schedule, in general, for the two summer classes? How long of actual classroom/lab time? Are the anatomy lectures online?

I'm sure I'll think of more questions as we get closer to the 31st. Thanks for any help.

On the orientation site it says you don't need to buy anything before orientation

1) I am not sure about immunization, might call Melinda McDaniel. She is in charge of that stuff

2) Buy Text book Online (amazon, etc.) much cheaper
Buy scrubs anywhere, Walmart here has scrubs if you need it
BUY: Netter: Atlas of Human Anatomy, Grant's Dissector, Clinically Oriented Anatomy, BRS Anatomy (if you want), Embryology (if you want)
(MORE info to come) but I know how anxious you guys are :laugh:

3) Last year for us during the summer
Monday-Friday (A&P/Embryology) (Starts at 1PM ends at 3PM) Friday, usually we have speakers come in so dress nicely
Monday-Thursday, A&P Lab (3-6PM) remember we have 2 teams but most likely you are down in the lab everyday
Doctoring (Tuesday 7:45AM-9AM, small group afterward)
CSSC: depend on when you have it but it is either Wed or Thursday morning

I say relax and have fun enjoying your last moments of freedom
We (current M1) still isn't done with first year, we are still on Summer Clinical Practicum. So we have been doing this for almost a year!!!

I agree with locus except that Clinically Oriented Anatomy and BRS anatomy aren't worth it. Netters + Grants + googling the areas that are difficult should suffice in my opinion.
