Snail mail continued status today after interviewing late December.

Can't say I'm not disappointed because I actually thought I might end up here next year but I guess that's how the cycle goes.

Congrats to everyone accepted so far!

Wait you interviewed late december and got a decision already? What happened to the 8-10 week wait? I interviewed late november and got nothing yet😕

I also interviewed & got in to both schools. Feinberg provides students with more free time, more resources for research, and a dramatically better location. They also probably have better surgical training and are more in-tune with modern healthcare technology. A friend of mine at Feinberg mentioned that UChicago still doesn't have a fully electronic medical record system. Its 2011. Feinberg has had one since the 90's.

Pritzker, however, seems like a family. The administration seemed incredibly warm and inviting. Students also seemed really happy. UChicago might also match a bit better and they may have a better reputation in academics if that's an interest of yours. The small class size, also, is a huge plus as it will come into play when want meaningful clinical experiences and responsibilities in the clinical years. I've heard that Northwestern Memorial is crowded with interns, residents, and fellows -- and the students tend to miss out on more responsibility during medical school.

Hey all,
As you can see this is my first post. I almost never check on student doctor but decided to check out the Pritzker thread during a study break. I saw the discussion on Pritzker vs. Northwestern and that research was mentioned here (above quote) and wanted to chime in.

Research opportunities are probably the major reason I came to Pritzker! The new curriculum has an extended summer (longer than any summer I've heard of at other medical schools) so that you can do a substantial research project and still have three weeks off to do whatever you want (vacation, relax, etc.). Pritzker also gives you another block of protected research time (no classes) at the end of second year. Getting involved is extremely easy. You can pretty much work with any mentor you want - I have never heard of anyone being turned away. Moreover, there are essentially faculty advisors whose job it is to find you a mentor that is a good match for you (look into Scholarship and Discovery on the website). In terms of the quality of research, the fact that Pritzker ranks fourth (out of all medical schools) in NIH funding per faculty member speaks volumes.

Note that it is a part of the curriculum to do some sort of scholarly project (broadly defined).

If you're interested in basic science research, UChicago has built two new buildings for biomedical research in the last five years (The Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery and the Gordon Center for Integrative Science). Also, the fact that you're fully integrated into the university gives you access to all faculty (even those not listed in the medical school). If you're not interested in basic sciences there are plenty of students in other areas (clinical, medical education, community health, med ethics, etc.).

One final thought. Taking time off to do research at Pritzker is very easy and something MANY students take advantage of.

Feinberg and Pritzker are great schools and there are many reasons to go to either, but I do think research is a particular strength of Pritzker when compared to its peers and I think most physicians would agree with me.

I just finished my interview at Pritzker yesterday and I have to say that I still liked Northwestern much better. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is awesome compared to the facilities at the U Chicago and it definitely has the best urban location of any US medical school.

I do feel that Pritzker is tilted towards research and Northwestern's program is more clinical. Also, Northwestern does not give the money awards that Chicago does, and this is a major consideration for most.

Overall, the students I met at Northwestern were happier and less "nerdy" than the ones I met at Pritzker but I know that it depends on the particular day. There is no doubt that Chicago is a great school, and to gain admission should be a great privilege for anyone.

when is Pritzker's second look weekend?

Wow, I have thought all this time that it's a week after that.

Oops.

It's April 8-9, not April 1-3. Not sure where that info came from, but we students just got an email about helping out with it, and it's definitely April 8-9.

Got the call a few hours ago. ACCEPTED with an awesome scholarship!!! love u pritzker!!!

just curious, but do all students who get accepted or matriculate to pritzker get a merit scholarship? i know on the website they say they have a budget of about 10 million for the class. and do they give everyone about the same?

I would imagine that most people get some kind of scholarship support. That much money spread over ~90 people would provide an average scholarship of ~$110k to every person in the class.

The only scholarship amounts I've heard of at this point are $180k and $150k. I'm guessing there are lower amounts, but since the $180k scholarship is effectively full tuition, I'd be surprised if there are larger amounts.

I don't know about the specific numbers ones as when I got my scholarship letter it said that I received a full tuition scholarship which covered full tuition even if the tuition price went up every year. Is that what you're talking about or are there ones that actually give a dollar amount?

Do you know if Pritzker (or any other med schools for that matter) give out merit scholarships greater than the tuition amount? I don't mean necessarily more for living expenses, but for expenses like books, lab fees, USMLE fees. From the estimated CoA, it seems like those things can add up to quite a bit.

I've only heard of scholarships that are actual dollar amounts. Yours simply states that it's for full tuition?

Wow, I have thought all this time that it's a week after that.

Oops.

Me too...

Dunno why I've thought all along that Revisit was going to be that first weekend in april.

Oops. That puts a dent in things

So does mine.

And mine says it'll change as the tuition changes, so that I never have to pay tuition.

I received the call today at 12:12 PM (MST). Acceptance with absolutely no merit scholarship. Has anyone else experienced this? What makes it seem so odd to me was that my student host got accepted off the waitlist and was offered a significant merit scholarship in May.

vraimont, it could be that they'll give out some merit scholarships later along with financial aid awards.

It seems weird though cause 45k is higher than tuition the first two years but lower the next two years...but seriously that's only like 7.5k less than a full scholarship. I wouldn't cry too much about it.

Oh I'm not crying by any means. But don't forget that the standard increases for tuition at most universities is 5-8%, and that can be pretty substantial.

Has anyone received notice about the second-look weekend yet? I don't think I ever got an email announcing it -- I only found out about the date through SDN. Can any current students tell us more about second look? (what goes on, how crucial it was to their school choice, etc..) I'm trying to decide whether I want to go to this one or to WashU's, since they're on the same weekend.

In your mailed acceptance letter there should be a little blurb about the weekend. They told me that they'd be sending out the details soon. The online chat transcript from earlier this week should be available soon, and they mentioned a few details about revisit, so maybe check that out.

Also trying to choose between WashU and UofC revisits...wish they weren't the same weekend

Ah, that makes sense. All the snail mail correspondence I've gotten is at my parent's house, so I didn't have it on hand to check. Thanks for posting the chat transcripts too! It looks like several people are scheduling personal revisits in lieu of attending the revisit weekend... I don't really want to resort to that though. :/ Especially at a place like Pritzker where the class size is so small, I'd like to get to meet my potential future classmates...

Yeah this sucks cause WashU and Pritzker were the two schools I REALLY wanted to go to second look at. I need to try to find out some good info about both weekends.

Seriously. 🙁 I wanted to choose between the schools AFTER second look, not before...

We should go to Pritzker during Revisit and then WashU all together on some other weekend... but grrr, i want to meet the potential students at both

supposedly washu's revisit is legendary...

but pritzker >>> washu.

Hello Future Pritzker Students/Hopefuls!

I am a current Pritzker student and I noticed a number of you are trying to decide between coming to Chicago or St. Louis for revisit weekend. I'm serving on the organizing committee for the revisit weekend so I'll try and give you a little more info. First of all, do you want to spend your weekend in St. Louis http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2151/2490048437_4a96295e18.jpg

or Chicago? http://bigcitybride.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/fountain.jpg

OK, that was a totally unfair and biased comparison (especially considering WashU isn't even in east St. Louis where that picture is from and Pritzker is 7 miles south of that fountain)...but you get the point, you should come visit Pritzker! 👍

However, we WILL be taking you all out to a cool restaurant right on the Magnificent Mile (downtown Chicago) on Saturday night, close to that photo of Buckingham Fountain. A bunch of the current students will be sticking around after dinner as well to show you around downtown Chicago.

Also, I was accepted to WashU as well, so I had to make a similar choice last year. I can't understate how amazing it is to have the City of Chicago at your fingertips. This truly is a world class city. I've been able to see concerts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, our city park system is wonderful, Lake Michigan is beautiful, the opportunities for exploring cool neighborhoods in Chicago are endless.

At least from the vibe I got from both schools, I feel that Pritzker is more focused on producing physician-leaders dedicated to solving the bigger, systemic problems in medicine like in health care disparities. I can't emphasize enough how supportive and dedicated all the faculty have been to our small class so far.

Pritzker revamped its curriculum last year which I think is a good sign of healthy renewal. Medicine is changing so rapidly, the curriculum needs to keep up. My understanding is that WashU is much more traditional.

They are both great institutions, but Pritzker's small, family-like atmosphere and Chicago were really big selling points for me. If you have any questions, respond here or PM me. Best of luck to everyone!

Wow wow wow, acceptance call today!!! I'm still in disbelief. I really thought I botched one of my interviews...

Anywho, I'm pumped to go to second look and meet all of you!

Congrats!!! I'm glad you decided to interview here after all. 😀 How did you like Pritzker (especially vs. feinberg)?

UF2099 - thanks for the info. You make a strong case for Pritzker, I have to admit. 😛 I'll give it some more thought, but I'm leaning more toward attending revisit here... it's cheaper for me also, since I can drive to Chicago as opposed to flying to St. Louis.

And anyone else who interviewed late Nov hear back?

And anyone else who interviewed late Nov hear back?

It's been close to three months for me and NOTHING. This is killing me! I need to call them soon, but I'm too afraid they'll just tell me my continued status letter got lost in the mail.

I interviewed December 2nd and got an acceptance call ~2 weeks ago

I interviewed on 12/7 and heard back on 2/9 which was 9 weeks.

been a while since I've been on here .

for those of you who don't know me ... pritzker student that used to give some advice from time to time

anywho, concerning scholarships i can verify that full tuition is NOT the most given.

i know for certain that some students have full tuition + 30K spending money.

for those of you that haven't gotten financial aid, hang tight, it maybe coming. also, if you have other places that you're thinking of attending, let the admissions/fin aid office know ... you might suprised how they can divert funds in your direction to help make your decision a little bit easier 🙂
