I'm going as the doppler effect. He he

Soooo quiet in here lately. Let's hope they send out invites next week.

Yah, I didn't wanna break the e-eee-erie silence...boooooo! :scared:

they don't have any good scary smileys, so this will have to do. :hardy:

Does anyone know what percentage of pre-pharmacy students AT KU are accepted into the pharmacy program there? I understand that KU accepts only 25% of applicants, but do KU students have a greater chance of being accepted into the program? Just curious as to what the numbers look like.

no costume omzy - every time i get interested in halloween costumes it's like march... and it's too early so i think i'll do it later. and then halloween just pounces and i'm unprepared.
BWSTW i youtubed that, great costume. 😛

Rxhawk i did a search (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/search.php?searchid=14881676 ) and the answer seems to be no advantage to KU pre-pharm students.

this is what someone said:
Being an out-of-stater doesn't put you at a disadvantage at all. First round of interviews this year on March 25th were 50% in state (KU and other kansan schools) and 50% out of state. I even asked the dean about this specifically and they said they don't have preference if you do your prereqs at KU or elsewhere. They want the BEST students regardless where they did their first few years of college. It all depends on your stats compared to others.

you could probably email the KU School of Pharmacy Deans Office ([email protected]) for more info.

I'm going with an old time bartender costume. Nothing too unique, but the handlebar moustache will be awesome! If any of you Wichitans want to meet on halloween, let me know, I've got a good house party lined up. 😀

Thanks much for the info, Genesea!

😀 gotta love Sheldon.

You know, I really wish KU would refrain from sending out any e-mails that do not pertain to interview invites.

kthx bye.

Oh yah =/ I got that email too. I knew it couldn't have been important info since I wasn't expecting any emails, but I bet that was super annoying for you.

Hi Deacon! :hello: How's M2 treatin' ya?

rough right now. finishing up neuro this week...lecture test and (LAST!!!) anatomy practical next wednesday and friday. but other than that it's good...more "real" medicine that first year and we all know a whole lot more than we did last year at this time, but still wish I could start clinicals.

Good luck on your exams! :luck:

Does anatomy start right away or are there other blocks before?

Thanks, i'm gonna need it. Anatomy begins in January of first year with the second half of the Cardio-Pulm module (although you'll have anatomy lectures in december before you get into lab). There is anatomy associated with each block in the spring (second half cardiopulm, GI, and sex/repro) except for one (renal/endocrine). The first 2 blocks of second year, Musculoskeletal and Neuro have anatomy and then you'll never have to set foot in cadaver lab again! The cadavers used by the first years in january are the same ones used by the M2s during the fall semester.

Thanks for the info! Again, good luck on your exams.

KSDeacon what's your favorite and/or least favorite thing about attending KU SOM?
anything you think the program (so far) excels at or you wish was better?
Do you recommend living close or commuting from further?
How much free time do you have?
Can you say anything about opportunities at the Jaydoc clinic for students?

(feel free to pick and choose which to answer and ignore these questions till after your tests)
and GOOOD LUCK on your tests! :luck::luck:

happy halloween to everyone! be safe
:ninja: <-ninja costume?

+1

Did you pick it over any other schools? If so, why?

Favorite thing...i really like that KU has the systems curriculum with tests basically every 4 weeks (either a midterm or final). I honestly couldn't imagine taking 5 "classes" during each semester, with each having tests scattered throughout and not having overlapping information. Systems really help me put everything together. Another thing is that KU is NOT a competitive atmosphere at all. Everyone wants to do well themselves, but nearly everyone is willing to help you out if you struggle with a particular topic. Additionally, there is a massive amount of shared resources (study guides, mnemonics, etc) that get sent out all the time.
Least favorite, aside from the current neuro module i'm in, i'd say i wish we had more hospital time during the first 2 years. Granted, at most med schools, this is the way it is, with almost all your time locked up in lecture, but it would be nice if we got to see the inside of the hospital more often. Now, that being said, there are a ton of opportunities to shadow, and the MDs who lecture are more than happy to let you come spend the day with them.

I live fairly close to campus, about 6-7 minutes depending on how slow people are driving. this is personal preference honestly. i have plenty of friends who live within walking distance, but i prefer to not have to look at the school whenever i look out my window. the podcast system more then enables students to live a decent distance away.

I honestly have a decent amount of free time, usually more-so at the beginning of a module when things aren't too hectic, but come test week, it's usually study lockdown. you will have to make sacrifices with some things (probably shouldn't be at the bars every weekend), but you will find the right balance for what you want to do. I refused to give up working out, so it's one of the things i absolutely make sure i have time for.

jaydoc is pretty awesome. as a first year, you'll be in the vitals/intake role (unless you do lab or are an interpreter) during which you'll record pt height/weight/temp/BP/pulse and then for the first couple months stand and watch the m2/m3 interview the patient. as you progress over first year, you'll be allowed to do more and more. a friend of mine did a prostate exam his 2nd or 3rd time at jaydoc as an M1.

KUNRD07...i applied ED. As a kansas resident and my particular scores, i decided it was the best option for me. plus, KU really was my number 1 choice.

Lemme know if you all have any other questions or if you want any clarifications.

Does anyone know the MCAT cutoff for OOS or even the percentage of OOS that they interview/accept? I am a Missouri resident with a lot of ties to KC but not to Kansas specifically. The initial emails the sent were not very encouraging to OOS applicants.

I have no knowledge of the admissions process, but I applied OOS. I get the impression from the emails the chance is low, but they are looking for people to diversify the class and I doubt they are looking at an MCAT cutoff.

This is what their email said with regard to stats: Of the 1900 non-resident applicants, approximately 100 were interviewed, 25 accepted, and 20 matriculated. (for the 2010 entering class)

From what I understand, they really look at your ties to KS. They want to make sure that you have plans and reasons to stay in the state after you graduate.

KSDeacon, thanks very much for the in-depth response 👍

vivezvotrevie, i agree with the previous posters that KS ties or an angle showing that you would add diversity would be more important than the MCAT. however, i'm guessing there's also a minimum MCAT score you have match or exceed to get looked at.. and i don't think it's posted anywhere.
(you might scour last years thread to see if any accepted out of state applicants posted their scores for comparison.)

edit: also if i were you i would stress that you're from and have ties to the "region"
gl 🙂

Hey all. Best of luck this cycle. As an OOS MS1 I will say that what they are looking for is something that will make you stand out. Diversity in that since only. Of the 17 of us out of staters that matriculated only 2 were diverse in the cultural minority sense. So it isn't limited to race as I was lead to believe in my application cycle. There isn't a cut off persay but you will need to be a very strong applicant with something special to offer. Feel free to ask me any questions and I will try to stop in every so often and interject. Best of luck!

Hello,
I'm relatively new to this forum. Good luck to those applying this cycle! I applied ED this year and was accepted. Was really nervous and didn't think I was competitive enough. In retrospect, I think it is really important to bring something different/special to the table and to know what you're getting yourself into because it is a lifetime commitment.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the interview or whatever. Again, good luck and don't get discouraged!

Great info! :luck: for tomorrow

Ok, I know there were interviews recently. How'd they go?

My interview was Tuesday. I felt it went really well, but sometimes it is difficult to tell. My open interview went extremely well and my closed interview went very well. I did not receive any questions on health care reform, which surprised me. My two closed interviewers definitely asked questions to see if you could think on your feet.
Good luck to everyone. I guess we will find out in about two weeks. If I make alternate that means I will only have to wait until March to make my plans for next year!:scared:

Any OOS get interview invites yet? I interviewed last year in March and I didn't know if they focused solely on IS during the early stages. Anyway Rock Chalk and hopefully Josh Selby is cleared to play soon!

Still waiting patiently. Wondering if anyone has received a rejection as of yet.

I interviewed last week, and they said we would hear back from them before Thanksgiving...but they only accept very few early on, with the rest being put on hold until maybe March.
