I just talked with Jason and they are mailing out letters tomorrow morning for November interviews. He would not tell me over the phone. 🙁

Just received my letter, "on hold" til Mach. That sucks, 3 more months of waiting.
 
awww, I'm sorry to hear that Bio and ksi, but I am keeping my hopes up for you.
 
i got on hold till march last cycle.. i sympathize; the feeling of being in limbo is almost worse than an outright rejection.
hope you guys fair better than i eventually did.


btw there 2 sessions in november? around the 8th and around the 29th?
 
I interviewed on Monday, Nov 29th. It was kansas residents who go to school out of state day, basically. It seemed to go really well. The admissions staff was super helpful, and the interviewers seemed to be the kind that actually like interviewing, unlike other schools.
 
Got a hold as well from the Nov. 8th interviews.....second year in a row. 🙁 Does anyone happen to know whether KU accepts the majority of its candidates during the course of interviews.....or in March?? I have gotten conflicting responses to this in the past. Waiting is bad, but worse when you have no clue what to expect come March.
Hope those who just interviewed get some good news in a couple weeks!!!
 
this is from last years thread on the subject of calculating the odds of acceptance and getting off hold (for regular decision):

seems 10 accepted in each session out of 60 total interviewed would be about 17% chance of a straight acceptance when granted an interview.
then 30/60 or 50% chance of getting put on hold, and they said in that post that there is about a 25% chance of getting accepted in march.

i would think it would be mostly the same except it seems there were 2 interview sessions in november this year and not last year (and maybe some other small differences?)


ofc that's just chances and everyone's unique application (stats, ecs, story, interview etc) make it impossible to really gauge anything ><

edit: maybe this is more what you're looking for? this is from 2008 but, based on info i received (but now can't find) at a 2009 open house i attended, i think it's relatively the same still as well.

Total admissions data: 2046 applied, 466 interviewed, 222 were accepted, 175 enrolled

In-state admissions data: 448 applied,364 interviewed, 183 were accepted, 155 enrolled

Out-of-state admissions data: 1598 applied, 102 interviewed, 39 were accepted, 20 enrolled

honestly it's tough to compare numbers from year to year. i was an ED admit and in the previous years, they had been accepting upwards of 70% of those who interviewed ED and then almost all of those who interviewed ED but pushed to RD got accepted. My year, i think only 40% or so of ED interviewees were accepted and less than "normal" accepted who had interviewed but were pushed back.
And then there's the wait list...supposedly waiting list wasn't even activated for the current M1s and KU actually accepted 1 more student than had planned; not 100% to the truth of that tho.
best bet is to keep your fingers crossed, keep doing things to show you're involved and that med school is what you want to do.

Thanks for the info. All of that is fairly consistent with what I'd heard. I guess all I can do is wait and hope that this March brings a better outcome than last!

Just wondering how and when you would be notified by Kansas. I was complete 9/22 but haven't heard a thing from them since. O btw I'm OOS. Am I doomed?

just keep volunteering/improving/etc and especially talking with people about your motivations so they're clear to you and easy to express.

i have a good feeling that you'll get in RD (any other fish bites aka interviews at other schools?)

jydeguzm, i think your chances are pretty low if you don't have ties to kansas or an invested interest in practicing in kansas down the line. additionally, i think you have to have fairly competitive stats and potential to enrich the class..

gl and either way i think you wouldn't have heard by now.. i believe they do more out of state interviews late in the cycle (like jan/feb)

I interviewed Nov 29th as well, very good interviewers who did a great job selling the school. When do the letters for this date get sent out again? I remember they said they should arrive before christmas, just need to know where I should set my address to.
 
Hey anybody have an idea when they will be extending January interviews? I didn't get my application in until fairly late (last day actually, but I was delayed due to work obligations). I'm in-state... just looking to see if anybody has an idea, or in a similar situation!

probably last weeks of dec or first week of jan depending on when the interview session falls.. they send out invites 3-4 weeks before the date. i was in a similar situation last year (applied very late) i got an invite on 12/15 and interviewed on 1/8. it resulted in a hold and an eventual rejection. hope it goes better for you, but if not then apply EARLY next cycle.

all i've heard about letters of intent and KU, is that they won't help after you've interviewed. however, in your position, i don't think it could hurt and might help? just emphasize how you have hopes of living/practicing in kansas (if its true 😛 ) and provide any updates on grades or ECs. good luck
 
I was at the Nov 29th interview date as well. From what I understood they will mail them anywhere from this Friday (17th) to next Wednesday (23rd). I need to change my address as well! Good luck to you!

was reading something from 2001 (http://www2.kumc.edu/mesu/EducRetreat/MedEducRetreat6-7-01.htm) which stated that "Student evaluations indicate that 40-50% of students feel the curriculum is not well integrated" with a number of areas that students felt were covered inadequately.

but then i found this from last year http://www.kumc.edu/som/documents/StateofSOM2010.pdf
slide 6 shows increase in student satisfaction from ~63% in 2001 to ~82% in 2010
slide 7 shows KU beating national step 1 scores (except in 2001, 2002, and 2009)
slide 8 shows KU admitting lower MCAT scores (which some maintain should correlate with step 1 scores)
slide 9 shows KU beating the national average for step 2 since 2007

can any current students comment on how well you feel the curriculum is integrated or how well it prepares you for boards?
i'm going to KU no matter what, i just had a convo with a friend that went to MU (pass/fail, PBL, amazing simulator labs, and boasting higher step 1 scores http://thinkfirst.umh.edu/documents/SOM FLYER.pdf) and looking for some reassurance that i will be happy/successful at KU (which i felt was a better fit for the way i study and learn).

I am currently an M1 at KU. I think you will find in talking to people that opinions on the curriculum are pretty polarized. Obviously I cannot speak to the boards, but I come down on the side that the current setup is pretty good.

I like the podcasting setup because it allows a lot of flexibility; I podcast almost exclusively and review the lectures and related cases with a group of 2-4. The small group/PBL activities are extremely valuable and I generally prefer weeks with 1-2 of those in the afternoon. Histopathology labs are my least favorite afternoon activity, largely because I don't usually find it helpful since the videos cover everything covered in lab anyhow. Clinical skills lab and standardized patients are by far my favorite afternoon activity; largely because it is a nice reminder that at some point in the not-so-distant future we will be seeing real patients on a more regular basis. Exactly how well integrated the material becomes depends entirely on your effort to integrate it. It is up to you; PBL/Small group and other organized activities are great, but in my opinion not enough on their own. I don't know that any curriculum can be ideal for everyone, but this one leaves enough up to you that you can mold it to work well for you. I, and most people I know, have found a system that works for them at this point.

They tested out a change this year during our immunology module. The change was: no live lectures, 2-3 podcasts from last year assigned per day. Each day in "class" we had several cases related to the assigned podcasts (1-2 hours of this per day) discussed between a student panel (which changed each day) and a faculty leader. The in-class sessions were not podcast, but also not technically covered on the test.; the purpose was to spend more time on application of the material. Opinions on this were extremely polarized, but generally speaking I get the impression that as with the regular curriculum, people made it work for them. My opinion was that they made it very clinical (which I liked) at the expense of the basic science/concepts (which was rough for a lot of people without immunology in undergrad). Additionally, since a significant number of people in my class attend lecture, many of them did not appreciate that they no longer had the choice to attend lecture.

Hopefully this is useful, and reassuring.

Edit:
I am told that the change I described above for the I2 module, despite mixed (and very strong) opinions from students, will remain in place, at a minimum, through next year. There was talk of changing other (if not all) modules to that format, but I don't know any specifics about that; as far as I know, it is only I2.

This is just my opinion, but in regards to the statistical changes in step 1 scores... I think you will notice that each class has a relatively unique "personality", so I would stick to general trends (which in this case, show an overall increase in scores since the new curriculum) and not be terribly concerned with minor changes year-to-year. What I mean is that based on the different makeups of each class, there will be differences in the scores, but I feel like it is a highly independent curriculum and their are a lot of opportunities to get advice/help for board prep (and learning in general)...so again, it will all come back to you.

Interview Invite! Totally didn't think I would get a January interview since I got my secondary in with one hour to spare, and my stats aren't favorable (I got a great resume, non-trad, and underrepresented... so maybe that helps lol). Totally stoked/nervous/relieved.😳

Current M1.

The new format sucks. If they make all modules like that next year I am going to be f*cking pissed. I havent talked to one person that liked it. The cases didnt even apply to the podcasts assigned for the day half the time and the podcasts were assigned out of order. I went to all the "integrative cases" and I didnt feel one bit better off for it. Seemed to me it was just less work for the lecturers and more work for the students. Sure the test results were higher than normal but that test was easy as balls. I think they did that on purpose to mask the fact that no one liked it. As far as material integration, eh they do the best they can but with the amount of information you go through in the first two years its a little difficult to try and apply every single thing you learn. Get good grades now, try and retain some stuff, relearn it for boards, and relearn it 3/4th year. Thats my philosophy.

Other than the abysmal cluster-F that I2 was I am enjoying everything else.
 
Interviewed 11/29, accepted 12/17. High GPA, lower MCAT, clinical research, IS, leadership, work experience.

For those of you that got an interview invite, congrats! It is a really low-key environment, however, make sure you brush up on healthcare issues and how you would fix healthcare (insurance, physician shortage, rural healthcare, etc). Good luck! 😀

Yeah, I know they have been asking a lot about health care reform in the past, but I wasn't sure if they would lay off of it now that a bill has been passed.

Didn't get asked about healthcare legislation except for a somewhat related question on rural physician shortages. I was ready to rock'n'roll with some good discussion on it but I'm glad they didn't ask, I would have wasted too much time on that. It went by so fast as it was, or at least it seemed to.

Good luck to the interviewees! Make good eye contact, but don't stare into the depths of the interviewer's soul, and remember to blink!

Don't worry about the tablet. You will get it during orientation. Don't get a new computer though, because you will have no choice but to get it. The last few years it has been an HP Elitebook.

Thanks for your response, I wasn't sure how KU did things. Several of the other interviews I have been to this year sent out invitations for guests (spouse or parents) to come and sit through informational sessions and to take a tour of the facilities.
 
I'm OOS -- they're still interviewing, right?
