for the other career question, are people just listing the names of three careers or explaining?
also, do you guys think another medical career (like NP) is also off limits?

There isn't really any space to explain. It's just three little blank spaces. As for your last question, I really don't know. I just put what I honestly think I'd do if I couldn't do medicine, but it was also hard to pick three because I usually only seriously consider one other option.

Hmm, status page says that they received my signature page and payment earlier this week but my bank account doesn't show the check being processed 😕 Maybe they forgot to process it and still entered that I did pay in the system
Aww, check got processed today. I guess Rush is on top of things, especially the money

For those of you that go to a school that does a letter packet...what did you choose on the secondary for the letter options? Did you pick individual and then just write the name of two letters in your packet?

Rush said they received my signature and ID, but my fee says "unpaid" still. did anybody else have this problem? I sent everything together by mail..

I just sent my signature and birth certificate and everything today, but I noticed on my app status page that my fee is still "unpaid." Maybe it takes them some time to process.

Don't fret guys. It'll take about 2 weeks for them to process the whole thing. After a week after sending in signature form, I saw the update in the status page. Another couple days before payment was paid. Another couple days before they actually cashed the check. These guys are receiving thousands of applications, so just relax and wait.

That's what you should do, yes.

Just got an email back from RMC admissions in response to asking when they will begin sending out interview invitations and they said that they anticipate sending them out not until mid-september.

Hey guys! I will be starting at Rush in a few weeks, so if you have any questions about the application process or interview, feel free to PM me!

I interviewed at quite a few schools but something about Rush really stood out to me. Good luck to all of you (and hang in there... the year will be tough but ending up at a school you love is completely worth it!)

Received the "File Complete" email this morning. Mailed in my stuff on 7/29, complete on 8/5.

1) is anyone putting down a "no" for the "have you ever been responsible for the care of others" field? I really can't think of much... there were times when I had to "take care" of my sister who is 5 years younger than me when either of our parents are abroad for a month, but nothing significant. There were 2-3 times when my boyfriend was really sick (and he's an international student so he has no family here) and I took care of him... as in bought him medicine, prepared meals, etc but they were all short-term... I feel that neither are "significant" enough... or are they? I don't wanna look funny by stretching too much 🙂

2) is anyone putting down less than 3 items on the alternative career fields? I can think of just 2 legitimate things I might pursue if I couldn't do medicine...

What do you do if the pre-med committee provides their own letter AND a packet including other letters? I currently have it labeled as pre-med committee letter.

When I emailed Rush, they just said: "Thank you for your interest in Rush Medical College. We will accept either a letter from a premedical committee or two individual recommendations. As a matter of policy, we will not process additional recommendations." So perhaps if that's the only form you can send the letters in (as in, you don't have an individual file of the single pre-med committee letter), then you can just send it all in and Rush will disregard the additional letters...

I think this setup is pretty typical of committee letters. They'll have everything they need if you have the committee send in the letter; I'd just send it in and not worry.

I didn't put anything down. I have similar stuff like that. I also took care of my roommates when they were sick by cooking and picking up and giving them meds, etc. I felt like it wasn't all that significant so I didn't put it down.

best wishes you all! hope we hear good news from here! 🙂

This is exactly how my letters got sent in. Rush emailed me to confirm which letter was the committee letter and said that would be the only letter they would look at. Then they marked me complete the next day, so you should be fine

yeah...like errands for the nurses. i didn't even put that on my primary, just listed it as "shadowing." maybe i have really loose definitions of shadowing and a really hardcore definition of volunteering, lol. and of course, rush has to ask us to describe the exact duties...

also Maubs, do you think that performing musically counts as a 'non-healthcare" community service?

did you also put "no" to the take care of others' q?

Thanks maubs!

As long as you're not trying to pass off the specific shadowing aspect as volunteering...but even so, it kind of seems (to me) that unless you specifically signed up to help out the nurses, it's a stretch to include it in volunteering. You're just being...well, a nice and helpful person. 🙂

What was the context of your musical performance? If it was, for example, music therapy, go for it. If it was a recital or something similar, I wouldn't include it as community service.

I answered "no" to the "care of others" question, even though there were probably (very transient) situations in my life where I could say I was. I interpreted it as being the primary caregiver for longer periods, like if a relative becomes incapacitated and you have to provide for their basic needs. But I would say that if you can make a case, go for it.

And you're welcome--happy to help out as I can. It's a painful process and it's nice to have people (tm H&R Block).

"describe your personal and academic preparation for a career as a physician. Include any changes in your career path, change of major, time gaps in your education, period of grades below a 3.0 level, and serious events/crises in your life that affected your path, either positively or negatively."

1000 characters is just not enough, especially for non-trads...

+1

Out-of-state applicant here. Quick question:

I submitted my AMCAS about 6 weeks ago to become verified and had an MCAT score of 27 at the time. I got my new score of a 33 this Tuesday and my AMCAS was verified on Wednesday. When I first submitted my AMCAS, I had already applied to Rush. Should I email them to inform them of my MCAT upgrade for screening purposes? I ask because I applied to 8 more schools on Friday morning and already received a lot of secondaries back from them.

I have also seen in this thread that no invitation is necessary. I haven't seen that style before where you can access the secondary automatically. Is it detrimental at all to access without an invite?

Thanks for all the help! Good luck for this cycle everyone! Hopefully a rural Kentucky boy can make his way to the city to join you all!

I don't think you will need to inform them. If you indicate you had a second testing date on your primary app when you submitted, they should be anticipating it.

There is no detriment as far as I'm aware to accessing the supplemental application without receiving an invitation. Good luck!

I think it's expected that you will find your way to the secondary and complete it without any contact from them. It can be weeks before you receive an email after submitting your primary. So go ahead and complete. 🙂

The fact that this website is down for routine maintenance between 1 AM and 7 AM CST is not a good thing for night owls like me...

I have everything written up! Would love to just submit this secondary and check it off my list..

Hi guys, do you think it would be appropriate for me to talk about my experiences as a mother in the "care of others" question? I am responsible for the care of my son, but I don't wanna seem like I'm asking for sympathy or trying to use my position as mother to answer a question😕...

I think the question will always spark some measure of doubt as to whether what you write is genuine or appropriate as opposed to trying to engender sympathy. If you can write about it "clinically," that might be the safe approach.

Certainly the question of whether parenting is a valid extracurricular to list on one's AMCAS application is one that will be debated for many years to come, but here I feel as if you are almost expected to include something like parenting in this. It would look sketchy if you didn't talk about it.

how long does it take to get their automated secondaries? Or do we just start it own our own at rushsupp.com because I see it says no invite needed...

Also, I'm glad no interviews started

You answered your own question. Take a deep breath, relax, and good luck to you. 🙂

Thanks for ur advice mauberley!

I agree with mauberly... if it comes up anywhere else on your application, you need to talk about it here. Also, I think this is a great opportunity to show maturity and successful transition into adulthood - I think they'll be happy to know that you can tackle large challenges and be successful. But that's just the opinion of another pre-med.

For those of you who are marked as complete, how long did it take for them to upload your letters?

All my other forms and materials were received by 7/28, but my committee letter still hasn't been uploaded 😕

Is it true that they screen people out just by the mcat initially?

Alright, I got the secondary email today! I guess my previous question didn't matter!

Why doesn't Rush have a phone number listed for their admissions office?...

Is it true that they screen people out just by the mcat initially?

i have heard that they screen after getting back your secondary for potential applicants that they want to interview. according to their website, it mentioned to at least have a 27 on MCAT, and higher than a 3.0 to be considered for the recent cycle. best wishes to you all! 🙂

No the secondary is available to everyone from the admissions website. The link is somewhere in the thread.

This is true of the secondary, but as was mentioned above, there's a cutoff MCAT score for your application to be considered (from what I remember Jill Volk saying at an information session I attended a few moons ago)--I think it's a minimum of 9 in each section.

minimum of 9s... and 30 overall to be competitive I think would be a safe bet.

From their admissions page:
Typical mean GPA and MCAT scores for recent entering classes:
GPAs - Mean
MCAT - Mean Science GPA 3.6
Verbal reasoning 10 Non-science GPA 3.7
Physical sciences 10.6 Total GPA 3.7
Writing sample P

Biological sciences 10.7 The screening process for potential interview invitations is limited to applications with an UG Science GPA range of between 3.0 - 4.0 on a 4-point scale and a composite MCAT score of 27 or higher (applicant's most recent set of scores).

So your probably right about being competitive for receiving interviews, but it looks like the cut off is 27.
