I am also OOS

Did you talk to Dr. South about your application and status?

When I talked to him last month he never explicitly said where i was on the list but said I have a pretty good chance of getting in based on my stats and ties to Arkansas

No I didn't talk to anyone. 31 MCAT 3.78 gpa and really close ties to Arkansas here. I don't know where I stand.

Well you're definitely able to call Dr. South and talk to him about why you didn't get in and were put on the waitlist.

My ties are really strong since my brother just graduated there with md last year so I think I'm considered a legacy?

My mom still lives there as well

Declined my acceptance today. Good luck to the alternates and the incoming M1s.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you decide? I'm assuming you are choosing another acceptance?

No problem. Yes, I decided to go to the University of Tennessee (but will always be a Razorbacks fan!). I went to school in Memphis and have lived here since graduation, so I also got the in-state rate here.

Dang, wish you were OOS lol. I'm on the OOS waitlist

Is there a Facebook group for the class of 2016?

Soooo there didn't seem to be much, if any, waitlist movement this week?

Do you have info other than the fact that nobody on here got in? I was just thinking maybe the ones that got in aren't members. I hope I am wrong and the movement is next week though lol.

There weren't that many people that joined the facebook group this week. I know that's not the best indicator but that's the only other way to tell

Maybe they didn't send them out til about Friday and your's and mine are in the mail! Lol, thinking positive here.

I'm right here with you guys...hoping and still waiting!

If any of you guys are really bored, you could go through the facebook page and figure out how many people have already accepted spots. There's quite a few people in there from class of 2015, so you have to go through each person one by one to figure out if they're in the class of 2016.

Before you go all med school espionage on this, I can tell you some people have indeed received offers from the post-waitlist movement period in the past several days. That doesn't mean there aren't others going out though, so the best of luck to you all! I hope there will be more of you joining the incoming class.

Yeah I wasn't actually going to do that, it was just a suggestion since it kinda crossed my mind when I was supposed to be studying for finals haha.

But seriously though, if anyone wants to figure out those stats, you would be awesome if you posted them on here

The May 15th AMCAS traffic rule date has come and gone. We did experience several changes to our freshman roster as seats were declined or deferred. And now we wait. We know this waiting time is not easy but all we can do is to allow the process to run its course. It patterns hold true, we still expect several more changes to occur between now and registration.

based off this email from linda today, it just doesnt seem like there was much movement this year. best of luck to everyone still waiting

Congrats man! It's good to know that they're calling rather than mailing.

Accepted! Got the call May 31, though the acceptance letter was written May 16th!
I am an Arkansas resident- dream school!
Exceptionally excited. See you all in a few weeks!!
Going to get a 2BR and a roommate. Any suggestions on places to live? Are the dorms decent?

Hello everyone!

I've been following both this post and a similar one from the previous year (this is my second time applying) and finally decided to create an account. Congrats to the 3 people above who got accepted! I'm on the alternate list this year, so I'm still hopeful! I've already gotten the ball rolling on next year's application though. Good luck to everyone still waiting like me!

Congrats you guys! Good luck to you Wompy...I'm right there with ya waiting. I talked to Dr. South last week and he seemed to think there would be substantial movement through at least the end of June. Fingers crossed!

Hello all future and current UAMSers. Have been reading these forums forever and decided to break down and join. I am currently on the alternate list for UAMS, OOS student from Missouri with strong ties to the state and ties to UAMS itself. Love seeing all this waitlist movement, just hope my name comes up soon! I talked to Mr. South a couple of months ago about the waitlist and what I needed to do to strengthen my application in the event that I (gasp!) don't matriculate this year. He said my application was very strong and the only thing he could really suggest was that I become a resident of Arkansas, so that's what I'm in the process of. I'm hoping his lack of suggestions to improve my application indicates I am in a somewhat competitive location on the waitlist. UAMS is close to home and is the only medical school I'd really like to attend so I'm, as Ms. DuPuy says, "staying hopeful".

I received confirmation that I have an on-campus studio apartment reserved for me and I have submitted a request for an annual dorm parking permit. I have submitted my financial aid packet as well as my on-campus scholarship application form. I have been in contact with the Arkansas Air National Guard and they are ready to commission me under the Early Commissioning Program for Physicians as soon as I receive a letter of acceptance. I feel I've done about all I can to prepare for beginning at UAMS this year, aside from actually being accepted. Is there anything else anyone suggests right now?

Milkman, care to update your suggestions about "required" text books, equipment, and supplies? Any insight on the alternate list this year?

My move-in date for the dorms is August 2, I really hope to be seeing everyone at that time.

Maybe someone on here can confirm or deny my notion of how the UAMS alternate list works. I would think that as long as the congressional districts satisfy their minimum and the OOS number doesn't exceed its maximum, it's just the next best "ranked" person by the admission board. I've met with Mr. South and he said something along the lines of "the alternate list is determined now, all we can do is let the process run its course." Do you think this implies that it is a sequential process (e.g. this person is ranked 1, 2, 3, etc.) or do they have some leeway when choosing the next accepted applicant after a spot opens up? Also, does anyone have an idea of the breakdown of IS and OOS applicants on the alternate list?

Additionally, I've heard rumors that the congressional districts and rural practice program have played a somewhat substantial role in the admission process this year. Unfortunately, I'm (from what I've been told) in the most competitive congressional district (2nd), so it's definitely not helping my chances.

Nevertheless, still trying to stay positive. :xf:

I would send a quick email to Ms DuPuy and/or Mr. South to let them know about these plans (along with an "I hope I get in!" statement). It certainly couldn't hurt your chances.

Nope, I'm holding steady. Steth only. Review books only.

As you know, they claim that the list is ranked and remains unchanged after it is created, with the exception of the rural practice people moving to the top. I'm inclined to believe that claim is false. Exactly how the waitlist works is a secret I've never been privy to, but I would treat it as though you're still battling with everyone else who has been waitlisted. Stay in touch, send final transcripts, etc. It won't cost you anything but a little time.

Any stethoscope that has been a favorite among students? I have a couple of Littmanns and was recommended to get a cardiology stethoscope. Do you have any inclination as to how many students have been admitted off the waitlist and how many more could expect to receive an offer of acceptance, in particular OOS students?

The Cardio 3 is definitely the most popular steth here. Unless things have changed dramatically since I started, during orientation, you'll be given a list of fairly heavily discounted steths to buy. The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive is around $40 (as opposed to about $150 at full retail), so unless you're just really strapped for cash, I'd buy one of the ones at the high end. Personally, I bought the most expensive one ($180, I think?), a Harvey DLX. You'll take some heat for its weird 3-headed design, but it's a great steth. I'm not exactly the most talented heart or lung listener, but I can tell a difference between it and a Cardio 3. However, if you already have a few decent steths around, I don't see much reason to drop the money on a new one unless you just want to.

There are quite a few people in my class who were waitlisted - I'd say 30-ish. Assume a few more than that got in off the waitlist but chose not to attend, so you're looking at 30-40 people off the waitlist. That's a whole lot. Most of the OOS people I know were waitlisted. I'm clueless regarding this year's specifics, though.

How do you suggest finding a place to live? I'm from a really small town and have never had to find anything in a city. The internet isn't really helping much. Do you think it would be worth my while to drive the 4 hours down there and just drive around looking for a house to rent? I've heard that the hillcrest and heights areas are the best places to be. Do you have any suggestions on a searching method? I'm looking for a house (1 or 2 bedrooms) but may have to get an apartment.

If you have a facebook account, there's a UAMS Class of 2016 page that has listings of students looking for roommates. There are also some posts about houses for rent.

In regards to best places to live, anywhere is fine as long as you avoid the area south of I-630.

Well, everyone is different when it comes to housing, but I only have good things to say about where I live. I work in a research lab at UAMS and I've lived at an apartment complex called Lanai Apartments for the past year. It's very close (2-3 minute drive, you could probably walk if you wanted) and the staff is friendly and the maintenance has always been very timely. They're relatively cheap (I pay 600/month plus utilities for a single where some similar places are 700+/month). Little Rock, in my opinion, is pretty expensive regardless and the rates only seem to be going up. It took me 2-3 months to get an apartment because the waiting list was quite long. Another thing to keep in mind is that they're strict about your background/renter history, so make sure you don't have bad references from previous apartments.

There's another apartment complex called Summit House that some people I work with stay at. I've heard mixed reviews about the quality, but they're comparable in distance to where I live. One good thing is that they are indoor access apartments, which is a plus for people who are worried about safety.

For me, one of the selling points of Lanai Apartments was how close they are to UAMS. The apartments are older, but they have been renovating them recently. I've never had any problems with pests, insects, etc. The air conditioner went out a few times, but they had it fixed the same day I gave them notice. I like them so much that I just signed a 12 month extension on my lease, so I thought I'd share.

Whaaaaaaaat? Little Rock is super cheap as cities go. Everything is very inexpensive, especially land/housing. It's 80% of the national average, as far as anything I just Googled.

Anyway, good places to live that are near school are Hillcrest, the Heights, Briarwood (where I lived), and Broadmoor. FYI, I believe my old roommate, a rising M2 named Matt, is still looking for roommates for the coming year. I can tell you true that the house is awesome and runs about $525-550/month, all included. It has a garage, a big fenced yard, large bedrooms, a GIANT kitchen, etc. You can look up the post in the Facebook page or message me if you want his number.

A good person to contact is Val Hansen. He's a real estate agent who deals very often with med students and has numerous properties for sale and for rent. I don't know his number, but a bit of Google-fu gave me this: Office: (501) 224-4111 ● Direct: (501) 960-4667. I'd imagine that's the right contact info, but I'm not certain.

Mark, I'm in the same boat.
I'm thinking dorms for the first year, 1st semester, anyway. I figure you can't beat the proximity, convenience of one bill, and having a place fully furnished. Anyone have any experiences from these dorms? (quality, noise level, satisfaction, etc?) I hated my delapidated dorms in undergrad the first year, but these seem nicer...

Yeah, Arkansas is super cheap compared to the rest of the country. I can understand why my parents decided to move here. I've lived here for quite some time now, so Arkansas prices are the only thing I know. I'm more speaking of the price comparison between cities in Arkansas. I was surprised at how expensive some apartments are in Little Rock considering how old the buildings are. I know a lot of med students rent houses, which is what I hope to do eventually. I have to get accepted first though haha.

Does anyone know anything about Georgetown Apts? They are looking nice but i'd like some feedback.

A good friend of mine lives there and says they're all right. They're in a decent neighborhood about 1.5 miles from UAMS. Being across the street from Target isn't so bad, either. 😛

The dorms are kind of a mixed bag. They're a bit on the expensive side, but they're very convenient, both in terms of not having to worry about where you're going to live and being close to school. There will be a bunch of other students around with whom you'll become good friends. On the other hand, they're pretty small and aren't terribly quiet. Given that you're here getting advice from experienced people, I think the dorms' attractiveness is diminished greatly for you. I lived there my first year since I didn't know the area and didn't know how to go about researching it. Fortunately, you don't have that problem.

I know 2 people that live there. I asked them and both said they like the apartments overall. The location is very convenient because it's close to UAMS and Target. It's actually a Super-Target, so I do the majority of my shopping there. One downside is that there aren't washer/dryer hookups in the apartments. There's a laundromat on the apartment property, though. Personally, I have to have a washer and dryer in the apartment or the clothes pile up.

From what I've heard from people who have lived in the dorms, MilkmanAl hit the nail on the head.

July is almost here 😱

Looks like I'll be applying a third year...

Any updates from anyone? Talked to Mr. South a couple of days ago and he said although alternate list movement has slowed to a trickle there is still always some unexpected movement up until August 10. I moved to Arkansas to work and establish residency and will be applying as an Arkansas resident for the 2013 application cycle if I don't make it off the alternate list this year. All us alternates need not give up yet though, we have a month left to hear some good news. I know I'm still hoping for that phone call any day now.

Just FYI, my old roommate, Matt, is still looking for roommates. I'll vouch for him as a cool dude and good roommate and for the house as an awesome place to live for an extremely reasonable price. It's exactly 2 miles from campus: roughly 5-7 minutes from school in traffic. There are details further back in this thread, if you care to look. PM me for his number if you're interested.
