Holy moley.......secondary invite today. Primary application verified at the end of June. Totally thought I'd been rejected.

Does anyone think Brian/Admissions is receptive of emails inquiring about application status? Complete since 08/22 and the silence is killing me. My top OOS choice.

I called and asked what my status was (I had been complete after secondary since July) and they told me I was actually on hold for interview (not mentioned on my status page), so they were definitely receptive to a call, not sure about email.

Good luck!

Thanks! I emailed them today before reading your message, though. Hopefully I get a response via email as well. Don't want to call them after sending an email, since it might get annoying for them.

I emailed them also. About one to two weeks ago. Never heard back. I am sure they are overwhelmed with application reviews and emails from anxious applicants like us 🙂.

If they get back to you, please let me know!

Whoa....Secondary. Swore I had gotten rejected. Primary sent at end of September. Here goes nothing....

I'm OOS and received the rejection letter at 5:11 CST today 🙁 Complete since early August with no secondary invite.

Good luck to the rest of you!

Wow. Thats strange....

"Not initially invited to submit a secondary application- You may not receive notification from the admissions office immediately. All applicants that are not invited to submit a secondary application will be re-evaluated by the admissions committee in January 2012 and we may decide do invite additional applicants to submit a secondary application at that time. Applicants not invited to submit a secondary application at that time will be notified by e-mail that they are no longer under consideration."

Guess you must be MSTP or Early Decision?

??? What if you don't get a secondary and they reject you then?
Can you send a letter of appeal?

I looked that up on their website, check it out for yourself! I would not expect UCSDSOM to be liars or anything like that so maybe its a mistake or something. Maybe someone else has better insight on this...? It does say all files will be re-reviewed and decided on in January 2012 though. Its gotta be a mistake. lol

Step 2....

This could be interesting.

I've been having issues accessing the status page since I first applied. Has anyone else had issues?

Guessing you were put on hold for re-review, and not rejected outright. No one gets an interview at NYU without getting screened in at most places. lol

What browser are you using? I've found that their page isn't too fond of Firefox 7.0+. Use Safari or IE.

Nope. I applied for regular MD, never got a secondary, and got my rejection notification last night via email.

I also got a rejection email yesterday, pre-secondary, and I have been complete since July.

Super stoked! Invited for an interview today!

secondary invite on october 9th and submitted on the 10th.

what was the interview process like? super curious if it's laidback or kind of intense like UCLA. Do you know if the interviewers are blind to the app or not?

good luck and thanks!

Do you mind sharing your stats and IS or OOS? Thanks much

Accepted this morning! Interviewed on the 11th or 12th of November I think.

Just got my II today, AMCAS verified Nov 14th....
how does UCSD screen? it seems that some got rejections pre secondaries including someone I know...

I have never heard a definitive answer on this. From what I can tell they look at the following:
GPA
MCAT
Ties to CA/San Diego/UCSD
Extraordinary experiences.

If there is an automatic GPA/MCAT cut-off, I don't know what it is. But I can tell you that if there is one, the GPA cutoff is something less than a 3.4 and the MCAT cutoff is something less than a 30. I get the impression that for the most part, especially for CA residents, they really do at least a cursory review of your app before they reject you.

Also, guys, not sure if this has been discussed yet this year....but please be kind to Brian🙂 If he tells you something on the phone and asks you not to post it on SDN, PLEASE respect that request and don't....it makes his life miserable. This goes for release of interview invites, rejections, acceptances, etc. Whenever someone posts that they found something out unofficially via phone, he gets flooded with phone calls and that sucks for him.

Thanks CougarMD

Wishing all of us luck 🙂

Called today since my app has been complete since sept, and I'm in the hold pile. When I check my status online, hold for interview doesn't have a date next to it. Is this the case for other people who have called and been told they were on hold?

Same for me

Were there any emails out today? I interviewed two weeks ago but haven't heard back yet :/

No, I don't think there was a meeting this week (holiday thing?). This coming Monday is the next one.

I called a couple weeks back wondering the same thing (complete 7/2) and am in the exact same boat as you! Hopefully we can score some late interviews :luck:

Just received an email saying I have been placed on hold for an interview 🙁.

I wonder how many people get off this list and actually get an interview. The email said the second look at applications occurs in January and they do not accept update letters of activities.

Got an email today saying I'm on hold for an interview and will have my application re-reviewed in January.

I'm disappointed since San Diego is one of my top choices and I'd love to interview there, but I'm glad they at least notified me about it.

On hold until January. Bah. Out of state applicant though, so expected.

Don't feel bad about it. I am IS and was also placed on hold. It just happens to be the way the game works. Good Luck! :luck::xf:

On a positive note, I have to say that the beaches in the San Diego area are so gorgeous. The surroundings at UCSD are just amazing.

Finally heard something from UCSD today - Hold.

Sadness 🙁

Got put on hold until January too. At least it's some sort of news. Do they put everyone who hasn't received an interview yet on hold until January? Or do a certain number of people get put on hold until January?

placed on hold today

was complete in mid July

on hold for interview. OOS, complete mid-October

there was no place to discuss ties to CA or San Diego, when I called the office back in October they said it wouldn't matter and they have been accepting more and more OOS students each year. I'll keep my fingers crossed til January :xf:

I was only complete within the last two weeks and did not get moved to hold for interview, just FYI. Doesn't mean it isn't coming, though, haha 🙂

That is all totally true, but I am pretty sure that a lot of people get asked about it at interviews if the connection is not obvious.

If your app shows you grew up in San Diego (per your autobiography), that you went to UCSD, worked at UCSD, volunteered at UCSD, etc....you can bet that they notice. They don't seem to have the affinity for their undergrads that a place like Vandy does though...but I think that is more a function of the amount of premeds that they generate.

I'm wondering this as well. Nobody is mentioning that they got outright rejected, so it's starting to look that most people are on hold until Jan when they re-evaluate.

However the email I received that the update consists of three options: hold, reject, interview.

Does anyone have a sense of the movement from hold to interview....

I checked last years thread and noticed that several people on the January review list did indeed get invited for interviews. Sadly, a quite a few of them were also put on a waitlist soon after their interview. A handful received acceptances within two weeks of their interviews or did not hear back until the very last few months of the application process.

Lastly, it seems UCSD accepts anywhere between 30 to 80 people from their waitlist (varies year to year) or of 250-300 acceptable applicants.

On hold as well. Excited that I wasn't rejected! WOHOOO 🙂

I got the hold-for-interview notice on the 30th as well... I guess it's better than a rejection but what is the consensus on movement in January?
