Can someone put up the exact essay/or short answer question by any chance?
i know someone said the prompt was just to quickly explain if ur considered underserved and if u plan to work in underserved after residency? is that 2 separate short answer questions ? and is there anything else?

Basically, that's pretty much what it is. It's a pretty short and sweet secondary. 🙂

I just want to make sure there is no miscommunication within the system. I haven't even received a email stating they received my verified application from AMCAS ( like I did for all my other schools).

I tried to call the other day and the person on the phone was kind of being short with me stating that all verified applicants get an application. But people also get an email stating that Howard has received their app from ACMAS. I have not received one single email from Howard.

That is why I am concerned. I'll try call them Monday again!

That's good to hear that some schools received your application. I think the office may be individually sending out these emails to each applicant. Hope you get that secondary soon. 🙂

Hey Sasha, if you have a trimester, then you could indicate that in the courses. I think that you could also add that you took Orgo 3 for your school. For the short answer question, a brief explanation would be good.

Thanks! Where should I indicate it? Just write it in somewhere? I mean they have my transcript and course history on my AMCAS. Do you guys know which one they would be looking at?

I think you could indicate that on the course grid and write it towards a last entry. I think there is an option to indicate if the course was semester, trimester, quarter..

Is any member of your family currently (or previously) associated with Howard University (any school or college)? If yes please list name, relationship to you, and association to Howard.

I have lived (for three years or more) in communities which are medically undeserved, or where the majority of the population is economically and/or educationally disadvantaged. If yes please explain/describe briefly:

I am having major issues filling out this secondary. For instance, I can't fill out the big grey box on the top right where you are supposed to put the first 3 letters of your last name. I also can't fill out the prerequisite courses!! Is anyone else having these problems too? Can I just print it out and fill these in by hand ever so neatly?

I don't know about that per se but they accept non-URMs and those interested in their mission. If you fit their mission statement and wish to work in underserved communities, then by all means apply. You just have to convey your interest in your secondary.

Verified applicants get a secondary invite through email from the office of admissions. Anyone can get it as long as their application are verified by the office. 🙂

Maybe you should give a call to ask. I think the office may be individually sending out the emails of the secondary to verified applicants. There are probably many applicants that have applied, and that could be why it is taking time for them. Hopefully you will get the secondary very soon. 🙂

money order and cashier checks are essentially the same, so yes you can use it!

I am technically Caucasian, but I came to US as a refugee from Ukraine. I know Howard is a historically african american school, do I even stand a chance? I follow their mission statement and I want to practice in underprivileged areas, like the once I grew up in.

I never understood his question and it keeps getting asked. Why would you not have a chance? Do you think they would not take you because you are not black? There last class was only 70% black so they are taking someone.

To the several people on here who don't have their secondaries, I hope you get it soon. It takes time for them to process and you will receive it soon. Once you receive it, it is a pretty simple secondary. 🙂

I had to be on top of the admissions office to finally receive my secondary from the director of admissions personally. Calling was really ineffective for me, I had to email the admissions office several times. There are problems with the communications between AMCAS and Howard. It is possible that they do not have you on file. Call, email or do whatever you have to do to get someones attention. Believe it or not but this process can be a cut throat process, so be alert and willing to fight for a spot while showing respect and dignity.

For all the applicants who are not that statistically strong (weak GPA or MCAT) but are well rounded, I wanted to let you know that there is still hope. I received a letter from another medical school (not Howard) for an interview in November. I would love to attend Howard but keep all options open.

For the nosey people, I have a gpa of 3.42 according to Amcas and 22o on mcat

Applying to medical can be a long and stressful process but keep a positive attitude.

Cool! We have slightly similar stats, so it gives me hope. You don't have to name the school, but was it a state school for you? When did you submit your AMCAS application?

I plan to mail my Howard application and fee today by priority mail, Gang. I have to get a photo printed at Walmart.

The school is a MD school in PA. I have been a verified applicant since July 16 or so. I submit the secondaries anywhere from 24 to 72 hrs of receiving them. Word of advice is to sent the mail at the post office and require that someone signs for the package. Howard lost my friend's application twice.

Thanks for the advice. I guess paying a little extra will save on the headache later on. I got verified 8/17, which wasn't the original plan, but I hope everything turns out for me this year. I AM READY FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL!!

One more question if you don't mind me nagging you. How many schools? I may have 30-40 MD and DO total.

That is a lot of money lol but yes I too applied to about 25 schools. A mixed of DO and MD.

Make sure when you are filling out all the secondaries that you don't lose focus on the mission and what that particular school is looking for. Schools care that an individual fits their mission and profile rather than numbers (GPA and Mcat) per-say.

A quick story, admission offices can act unpredictable at times. I had two friends. One friend had great numbers 3.8 gpa and a 36 mcat. The other had a 24 mcat with a 3.4 gpa. The friend with the 24 mcat had more interviews than the other friend because he fit the mold of the school. They both got in to medical school but the friend with better mcat and gpa had a much harder time. Confusing right!
