Well, it is good to know that some got a complete email. I think though if you gave the secondary and also AMCAS got your letter of recs then pretty much you are complete.

One email I really hope and pray to see is that interview email, where get to pick the dates. Basically from now until April any one of us could get it. And may it come 🙂

i hope i get that interview email too!!!!!!!!

I just mailed off the secondary. Did I wait too long? Hope to get an interview here.

Yes I was offered an October interview, but I remember receiving an email back in July about secondaries being sent and processed late this year....It got deleted by accident...so was September their first month in sending out the secondary App? I didn't see any post on SDN about it but then again there are like 100dreds of applicants who aren't on here.

ya september was the first time they sent out the secondary. this past week's interviews were the first ones to go out. Hoping for more this week!

Three more days for those ii begin to come in!(assuming they go out on fri) Talked to the director of admissions today to give her an update on new and exciting activities and opporunities that have arisen.

You smell that, smells like an ii is headed my way !

God wills me the power and strength to pursue my dreams therefore I use those powers to glorify his word!

Congrats, I'm one of several med students giving tours at HUCM this year, can't wait to meet you guys. Good Luck👍

I got an interview invite for Oct 23rd! 🙂) I'm super pumped to visit the school!

Congrats!

Cmaster, do you know how they go about giving out interviews? I assume they take well-rounded + high stats applicants first, which is fair.

At HUCM stats isn't everything, they look at your whole application from top to bottom.

Don't get me wrong, stats are still important because they open doors, but if your stats are not that great, don't give up hope more often than not, HUCM will take the students they feel really want to be here over others with good stats.

I figured that. I am definitely a believer that stats aren't everything considering my interview invite to UTMB. That's why I said well-rounded + high stats. I guess I should have added fit to the equation. Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping more people would give details about complete and verification dates, so we all can have an idea on the timeline.

What year are you by the way? Also, what are your pros and cons? If you are 2nd+ year, do you feel you are surprised often with the greatness of this school?

I spoke earlier with Ms. Walk and would like to tell everyone that if you have received the secondary acknowledgement email and if AMCAS has received your letter of recs and you get that notification from AMCAS, then you are complete. You don't need to have a complete email!!!

With that being said, congrats to all applicants with interview invites, and those applicants waiting for the interviews, I really hope and pray that we get those interview invites!!

Don't lose hope!!!! 🙂

Had the received/complete with everyone else last week or 2 weeks ago I believe? So if no interview then no bueno?

congrats to those that received II's! looks like most people get invites within 24 hours of complete email.

Congrats to all with the invites. Thanks Cmaster and hows med school going? Nice to hear about that interview aspiringdoc. Thanks also to Sweetness34 also for the complete email comment. I was wondering about that, and it looks that I am complete at Howard. looks like the interviews can come any day. so any day you could get that email!

pry 9/15. No conf until I email last week. Ms. Jones reply, yes we got it, no secondary on her reply though. Email says attachment could not be retrieved. Emailed her again 2days ago, no reply yet. Good stats and Int student. Could this be the end of the road? what can I do now?

Congrats to all you that received IIs! I went to HU for undergrad and hope to attend HU for med school as well. Can't wait to get that ii !!!!!🙂

Hey everyone,
Though I have been on SDN for several years now, after visiting HUCM yesterday for their open house, I feel compelled to offer my very first post!
In case you are unaware, HUCM offers an Open House the first Friday of every month (as long as it is not a holiday). The director of admissions, Ms. Walk, was so kind to welcome us to the school and then personally give us all a tour of the facilities. What really sold me on this school was hearing her and random students and staff I ran into and began having conversations with…they all spoke so passionately about their mission to serve. To be honest, I rarely come across a community so invested in producing change agents for our world’s disadvantaged communities. If you are on a mission that is true to the most disenfranchised patient populations, I do hope you apply to Howard. Everyone from the librarian to people walking the streets were friendly and I had some great conversations that made Howard feel like home  Most importantly, if it is your mission to really dig deeper into health care reform, I am excited to share that Ms. Walk seems to share that passion. With all that is going on in Washington right now, I am convinced that being a student at this great institution can only augment your pursuits.
The reason I am posting is because I hope that HUCM c/o 2017 is the best they have ever had. And I hope that each year, they attract more talent, more willpower, and better applicants than the year before. Ms. Walk said that a few years ago when they started the open house, 3 students showed up. Yesterday, they were tremendously excited to see at least 25. With their sincere interest in recruiting talented, committed physicians of the future, I hope that their heartwarming essence will bring more students to consider joining their incoming class.
No matter if you are applying this cycle or 5 years from now-if it is in your heart to help our national health care crisis, please keep pushing. I know how being a premed is (I am in the application cycle right), where you are so hyper-focused on getting into a school that it may seem like an end all if you don’t get that one acceptance. It’s extremely expensive. It demands many sacrifices unless you are fortunate to be completely dependent on your parents or family. For any of you who resonate with this, please be encouraged by the phenomenal schools of medicine, like HUCM, that exist in our country. If you believe that you have even a flame to contribute to the health care workforce, as a future physician I pray that you can bring your very best effort to bridge the very real physician/health care provider shortage. By the way, I am super excited about this documentary that came out yesterday…check it out if you can! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sp4Y_DNMYk&feature=autoplay&list=UUYv6fOB2YExS3SZmLvqJJ2A&playnext=2
Anyways, sorry for the rambling. But back to my original intension with this post: with the lag time with HUCM secondary’s this year [some glitch where most student’s have not yet received one], I want to encourage those of you who are committed to serving, and I mean really committed, to please do everything in your power to apply. I don’t know your numbers, but if your show competence in your studies and are committed to spending 18 hrs/ day for the next four years of your life to master medical sciences, I want to see you succeed. It is almost a blessing that this secondary delay has happened, particularly for any students who may be behind with the whole secondary-submission process. If you do not yet have a formal “secondary”, for goodness sake please be proactive! First of all, it is on their website!! http://medicine.howard.edu/students/prospective/admissions/process.htm there is a doc to download under the AMCAS and Secondary section. Answer the questions on your own time. I am not sure if the admissions department want me to put out all of their email addresses (they are overwhelmed with emails already as it is so I kind of want to discourage emails, but that’s just my personal opinion)…but if you are ITCHING to get an interview without an actual secondary in your hand, download and submit this it ASAP.
I wish everyone applying to medical school the very best of luck. This process is grueling, demeaning, and exhausting by the end of it, but you cannot let that, of all things, stop you now. It not over until it is over! As much as I believe in faith and spirituality, the right actions NOW speak much louder than words ever will. Our country needs inspirational physicians now more than ever before, and I hope that nothing will stop you from doing whatever it takes to serve such a great nation of opportunities. Please don’t give up hope, and stay focused.

^ +1

Well said. I hope my class next year :xf: is full of people like you.

Welcome SiSS and good words!! 🙂

I hope and pray that we are part of HUCM class of 2017!!!

😍 I love HUCM!! 😍

Keep hoping and praying!

Stay strong guys!!!!!

For those of you who received secondaries, about how long did it take for you to get the secondary after you were verified? I was verified 9/20; my stats are MCAT:36 and GPA: 3.8.

I actually waited a week and then emailed admissions that I had not received it yet. They then emailed it to me the very next day.

Does anyone know how long after I sent the secondary back should I expect the application complete email?

It could take about 1-3 weeks to get the secondary received notification email. I called Ms. Walk last week, and pretty much if they have all your letters from AMCAS, then you are complete. So if AMCAS has all your letters of recs and you get that secondary received notification email, then you are complete and don't worry about the complete email.

School is going fine, as a 2nd yr I have more free time on my hands. Also, classes are organ system based and it is pretty interesting to see how things you learned first year apply to diagnosing and treating patients.

Surprised with the greatness of HUCM? lol never heard it phrased that way before. I am more than happy with my HUCM experience so far. My classmate are cool and helpful when needed; in general people here are very nice and helpful.

Pros: Close knit student environment, HUCM pairs you up with a 2nd and 3rd year mentor that help guide you through your first year.

Cons: there are none!!! greatest place on earth.🙄

I guess that wasn't the best phrasing. LOL! Usually, I am at work when I get on here, so every reply/question is hurried. That's great to hear though. What research opportunities are available? Have you started studying for STEP I? Is there any dedicated studying time given for boards?

What is a community based model of medical education exactly? Evidence and community based medicine?

Can you elaborate?

If a medical school states they are to serve society using a community-based, patient-centered, interprofessional and evidence-based model of education. How do you think they define a community and evidence based model of education ?

Community based=oriented towards service, meeting the needs of people in the area
Evidence based=conclusions/strategies are derived from the results of research data

Hi Everyone

I'm a first year at HUCM and I know NOW more than ever that I have made the right choice. Howard is truly an amazing place for those of you who really want to work closely with your classmates and help eachother be the best doctor that you can be.

If you want to know more or need someone to to answer some of your questions before. Please feel free to PM me.

GOOD LUCK to all. 😉

Hello everyone! Its that time of year again! Well, let me introduce myself. I am Derek (dakangel) and I am currently an M1. I was here last year just as you guys and this place helped me soooo much with the whole application, interview, and keeping up with everything. I am here to help whoever needs help; JUST ASK! And good luck to everyone applying. HUCM is the bomb and you will meet the most diverse and most exciting people here 😀

Hello applicants. I'm a first year student at Howard and I want you to consider Howard if you are fortunate to get accepted. This is a great and fun place to be. You'll study a lot (way more than you did in undergrad as the standards here are high), but you'll have lots of fun as well.

For those without interviews yet, Howard takes a look at the whole application. The MCAT is very overrated and stats aren't everything here so don't worry too much--believe me. Let me know how I can help and I can answer any questions you have. Good luck to you all.

hey kebede, dakangel, and cyal!! Great to hear and indeed Howard is amazing!! 🙂

I submitted my AMCAS application 1 week ago. It seems that it will take about 1 month for it to be verified by AMCAS. Do schools such as howard send out and accept the secondary app before the application is reviewed by AMCAS?

Your kinda late in the process, I hope you have great stats ha. I have heard of people obtaining the sec before they were verified but that is not the norm. Normally applicants must be verified to get sec.

Howard hasn't sent out many ii lately? The wait continues.

How long does it usually take to get the complete email? They received my secondary a couple weeks ago.

I have a question in regards to the application.

The instructions say that "you may attach one (1) additional sheet to your application". What do they mean by that? Is it for the answers?
My answers are not very lengthy since they ask to briefly answer them. How long do you guys think they should be? Any advice?

I have some legit reasons for being late with my application. Do you guys think I could use this extra page for additional info I would like the admissions committee to know when reviewing it?

Thank you!! 👍
