I've been complete for about 6 weeks now. How long does it usually take for interview invites?

I've been told by an M2 that there are no more interview dates in November for in-state applicants, and only one round in December. The great bulk of in-state regular decision interviews are done in January and February, so I wouldn't be worried.

If you are going to be interviewed, you will likely hear something in December or January for an interview invite.

Vuska, I am from out of state but have lived here for a year since college so now I'm IS I guess,
4.0
28 MCAT

Hey guys! First of all I want to wish you all luck in your applications to KUSOM this year! I haven't checked SDN since I applied last year and wanted to pop in and say hello.

I am currently an M1 at KU and am able to answer any questions you guys may have about applications, curriculum or anything else!

:luck:👍

Any idea how many people get in early compared to the amount that get in from being on-hold until March?

Hi guys! I haven't stopped by SDN for a while (med school keeps ya busy! Who knew?) but I thought I'd say hey and offer any advice or answer any questions y'all had about KU. I'm currently an M1 on the KC campus and am loving school so far! Last exam of the semester is tomorrow! Congrats to all the new acceptees and good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!
🙂

Hi Kansaskid
I just had an interview invite to Kansas for Jan 14, I'm from Ohio but the majority of my extended family resides in Kansas, which is why I originally applied there. I just joined SDN so I could ask you some questions.

Do you know how many OOS students are in KU? It seems KU has an emphasis on in-staters, hopefully my ties to Kansas via family will be a good incentive for them to want me.
I have a fairly strong background with 3.7/33, 3 years of research and one year working in the ED. Do you think that is comparable?
Do you know of OOS students being invited at this late of a stage and still getting in, or does that seem to be the time when much of the seats are filled in Jan?

I'm about as disenchanted with medicine as an ER physicians working intermediate care, this waiting period and anxiety of unknown future isn't helping either. I need to get excited for KU before my Jan. 14th, hopefully you can help! Realistic expectations are what I need right now though, I need to start thinking of other options besides MD at this point.

This is from their website:
For the 2012 entering class, KU received more than 2,600 applications for a class of 211. Of the 2,015 non-resident applicants, approximately 100 were interviewed and 40 accepted.

Congratulations for the incoming KUMC medical students, class of 2017. I have created a face book group called KU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CLASS OF 2017. Feel free to join the group and once again Congratulation on your acceptance into KU med school and it is a great school, you are going to love it.

Any questions, feel free to ask

Thank you

Well, I guess I'm the only one thinking this...Is this legit? There is no FB group and this is their only post...

I received an interview invite for January 14. I am so happy and excited!
Has anyone else heard? This thread is so quiet...

Complete in October, secondary complete in November and got the II 12/13.

I am interviewing on January 3. Secondary completed in November, was invited on 12/10. Good luck to you!

Got the "on hold" letter. It says I will be informed in March of the outcome. Does anybody know statistically how this typically turns out, i.e., what proportion of students on hold end up getting waitlisted, accepted or denied? Also, as far as the point system is concerned, does anybody know numerically what the scale is, i.e., what is the max, what is the cutoff for automatic acceptance, and what is the minimum cutoff for hold status?

It's hard to say, I don't think anyone has access to any hard-and-fast numbers. I think a good estimate would be maybe a a quarter of the "on-holds" get accepted, half get wait-listed (the wait-list is usually somewhere between 50-60 applicants), and the remaining quarter get rejection letters. You might try emailing admissions to see if they're willing to give better numbers.

Can anyone speak to how fast they're getting back to applicants after an interview this year? Is it three weeks or closer to four weeks?

This is my first post on sdn, but I have been reading it for awhile; thinking I should contribute something.

n12, I interviewed on 10/31 and received an acceptance letter via mail on 11/21 that was dated 11/15. I am pumped; hope that helps any, and good luck!

Someone I know interviewed recently and said that they were told 5 weeks.

Hi, sorry for the delay! I hope your interview went well last week!!

As was mentioned, KU is definitely a school that seeks out in state applicants, and there seems to be maybe 30 or so OOS students in my class (my best med school buddy is actually from Omaha! And she didn't get her invite until March I think...) Your numbers and background are definitely comparable to students here; I know a lot of people who had MCAT scores less than yours. You probably do need that little bit extra, though, as an out of state applicant. Having ties to KS helps, but it doesn't equal the advantage of residency.

I think KU heavily prefers in state students and makes the exception for people who have strong ties to KS and/or are incredibly passionate about rural primary care. Without those things, from what I've seen and heard, it is very unlikely you'll get accepted at KU unless your stats and interview are outrageously amazing and you express a strong desire for KU. If you're that good, though, and from another state, you'll probably end up with more options, too...and in fact, may be less likely to matriculated at KU, which is part of why it's difficult to get that OOS acceptance.

Good luck! And good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back! KU is a great school with some amazing opportunities 🙂

Received interview invite just now by email. OOS nothing spectacular about stats.!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you mind sharing your stats? I'm OOS as well and haven't heard anything since my update letter.

You can pm me if you are willing.

Declined the invitation this morning--hope somebody else can make some use of it.

Hello guys, I was wondering if anyone is flying in on Feb 06 for the interview on Feb 7 and staying at the Holiday Inn Express. I wanted to split the cab or a shuttle... times are rough hehe! I did not buy my ticket yet, so i could plan accordingly.

Fingers crossed.... we got this!!!!👍😎

I'm actually trying to reschedule it for any date because I will be at an international science conference overseas presenting an abstract during those exact dates 6-8 and cannot make it to that interview. I got a really rude reply from them basically saying too bad so sad we cannot reschedule. I escaladed this to the Dean, but we'll see what happens. I'm not happy that they are not even willing to consider doing an outside interview with a faculty member any other time before/after. I might have to withdraw my II and forgo this opportunity, but it sucks, they should at least give me my money back. I called like 3 times and all my messages go to voicemail. Baaaa!

Good luck URM4Underserved! Represent FL and do it well... 🙂

At this point if they grant me the interview I might consider putting on a show and going as Princess Leia like Tina Fey did once upon a time.... see link --> http://youtu.be/bBuNvyo4j54

Tadaaa-

As a student at KU and part of the interview process, it isn't just as easy as meeting with a faculty some other time. You generally have interviews with 3 separate faculty members that are physicians, deans, pathologists etc that set apart their time for the 3 dates to interview candidates. They are extremely busy and give their time to do this and it is difficult to reschedule interviews. Schools you apply to do not owe you anything, it is an honor to recieve an invite to any school, not an entitlement, you are not owed anything. OOS applicants to KU have to be extremely competitive as KU takes less than 10% of their class from OOS.

I understand that you are upset that you cannot interview at this school or reschedule but your blatant disrespect on your MDapps profile makes me think it is your loss, not KUs. You know nothing about the school and how much they do for their students. They are very supportive and go above and beyond to make sure we succeed, so before you post things that are defamatory, whiny and full of entitlement BS, realize it is a privelege to be invited to interview and a privelege to be accepted to a place that will train you to become a physician. Looks like you already have a few acceptances so good luck next year wherever you decide to attend.

How many M4s are involved with the interviewing process?

Tadaaa,

Aw Im so sorry to hear that, but everything happens for a reason, and you have been accepted to real good schools as well it seems, and look in the awesome side... you going to present your abstract overseas 👍 !!! Good luck with that. Hope you figure everything out. I will make sure to represent our sunshine state!

waitlist22.... you might want to consider watching the youtube video (http://youtu.be/bBuNvyo4j54) I posted, you sound like you need to lighten up.

Anyway, I am allowed to express my opinion about MY experience applying to medical schools, including the University of Kansas on SDN and mdapplicants. I don't care to debate with you, but perhaps you may understand a bit more if I explain it to you.

I applied to Univ. of Kansas because I actually had interest in attending. I requested to please change my interview date, that I was willing to come any day/time (even tomorrow if I had to). I got a quick 1 sentence response saying we can't good luck. This message was sent to me almost immediately after I asked to reschedule. The reason I was upset is because they didn't even TRY to ask anyone to reschedule, they didn't even make the slightest effort. I work at a medical school and I have interviewed at several places, this isn't common practice. To invite someone to an interview and then dismiss them when they have a valid reason without even TRYING isn't right. I don't think I am owed anything, but as a medical school applicant I hope that the time I took to fill out their application and the money I paid for both primary and secondary, will at least grant me a chance at the school if I am given an interview. Key word here TRY - and by that I mean they should at least try to accommodate my situation. Furthermore, I called several times and left voicemails and received no response. I then called another person listed under the contacts on the school's website and I explained to her the story and she was reluctant to even ask anyone, simply said no we can't accommodate you so leave a voicemail at admissions (even though I told her I had already left several voicemails). After nothing resulted from this, I emailed the Dean/Assistant Dean.... as of today I still haven't heard from them. I haven't encountered this issue at any other school that I had to reschedule, even for MD-PhD interviews which usually require you to meet with about 5 to 6 faculty members. Overall my assessment was based on my experience, I'm not saying everyone will have the same experience or opinion. This is SDN, a place were people come to vent and post things that make us all feel better or just more neurotic than we were before. Anyway, we won't be crossing paths any time soon I imagine I won't be heading up to Univ. of Kansas because the whole experience just left a bad impression on ME.

URM4UNDERSERVED... thanks! I will now leave this thread as I am no longer part of it ... sniff sniff... anyway, don't be swayed by my experience, I just always believe that I should pursue any opportunity given to me with great fervor, so I always try as hard as I can to make it happen. When it doesn't I just think exactly what you said, "everything happens for a reason", it just wasn't meant to be :-D I hope you have the best day ever though! Bring a jacket/sweater/earmuffs/gloves/uggs/electric blanket... anything below 70 F is cold for a Floridian LOL

uhh uhh... when u flying in? When is your interview and your group? I'm leaving from FL as well!!!! Feb 7 is my interview 🙂
Hey URM, I'm driving in from out of state on the 6th and I could probably give you a ride to the Holiday Inn from the airport. I probably won't be in until late evening though. If you'd like to PM me your flight info we can try to work something out.

Oh boy, this is so exciting! Just sent you a private message. Hope it all works out :-D

If anyone else is flying in on the 6th, I'll be making a trip to the airport and can probably give you a ride to your hotel. I'll get to the airport around 8pm and I can accommodate 2 more people.

Got the scholarship email this weekend! Getting closer and closer! July will be here before we know it!

They haven't decided yet if they are going to require everyone to have the same tablet next year or not. I'd hold off getting anything until they decide because past years have had a required tablet purchase.

I wasnt gonna get anything. i think it is ridiculous to pay 2.5k for any computer and make it mandatory....not sure what i would need it for...

I don't think the computer by itself costs $2500. My guess is that's what it costs after loading all of the software and what not that you use as a student like pathology slides, etc. Some software packages cost a fair amount of money, even MS Office 2013 Professional Plus costs over $300 (assuming no discounts). I bet some of the cost is to also help pay for tech support. Could be wrong though...it is what it is, I suppose. Maybe the cost is why they are looking into changing it.

Yes, but even so, at the high-end, those convertible tablet laptops are in the $1000-$1500 range. I don't see where the extra $1k comes from. I'm not looking forward to having to pay for one, but I'll live I suppose.

From what I understand, not only do you buy the computer and software, but also support and free replacement in the event that something happens to your computer, such as an lcd break, motherboard failure, etc. That being said, you can pay $2,500 now and have the assurance that you are covered for the entirety of your education, or you might be able to spend $1250 twice or more depending on what happens during the four years.

The big picture here is that you get to go to medical school at one of three campuses, have access to vast resources, and most importantly, you get to be called Dr. after you graduate. Who cares if your student loan is $200,000 or $202,500, interest is going to kill you anyway.

Anyone here thinking about the Salina or Wichita campuses? If so, have you heard anything about your acceptance to the campus of your choice?

Hello,
I was a little confused about how they would contact us after the interviews. If your committee score is well above the set benchmark, you will automatically get an acceptance letter and if your score was well below, a rejection letter. However, my question is about the ones they are still debating about. Do you also automatically get a, "we are still processing your application" letter or do you just have to stick it out until March?
Thank you!

Same boat. March. I got the "on hold" letter; thought it was a rejection before I opened it, so phew. Did you not get the letter?

I interviewed Jan. 16th, but I have not gotten a yes, no or maybe yet. I am wondering if I just need to be patient or if I should make sure they have my correct address at this point! When was your interview?

November 29. A very sketchy experience. They got back to me about 3 weeks post interview via snail mail.

I interviewed in the January 3/4 round and did not receive notice for 4 weeks (received a letter on Saturday, Feb 2). I've heard they're taking between 4-5 weeks to get back to interviewees.
