Just spoke to someone in the admissions office. They latest one could hear about an Interview Invite is mid to late November.
I'd really love an interview here! 🙄
Best of luck to everybody!!
How many people interviewed in each group?
For current students:
1) How does the school deal with Hurricane/Bad Storm days?
2) I understand there is an 8 am - 12 pm schedule. I was researching the school's curriculum, and I noticed that they mention supplemental lectures but I suspect this is a PBL/Small group learning curriculum, correct? Therefore, which courses are considered supplemental lectures?
Not sure how to answer #1, since I've personally never experienced it. I know with ike, they shifted the schedule around.
2. No, supplemental lectures are ones that are posted up on tegrity, the recording system we have here. They're on the exam, but you can do those on your own time. We've only had 1 for gross anatomy so far. They may also be referring to supplemental Friday lectures for practice of medicine, which are also on tegrity. For the first two years, you only have the main module course plus practice of medicine. Hope this clears things up!

So what does your typical day look like for first year? Is it lecture 8-12 then gross anatomy in the afternoon for the first semester?
No.
Gross anatomy lecture + lab (mon-thurs) + PBL(mwf). PBL sessions are 1 hour except on Fridays when we take a group quiz and have a case wrap-up. These activities always end at noon.
One day a week we have practice of medicine that lasts 1-4pm, sometimes until 5pm.
Gross anatomy and radiology (GAR) lasts two months and then we have molecules cells and tissues (MCT) for another two months. That is the first semester. We don't start MCT for another week, but it looks like we will have one lab a week (maybe less) and PBL will last two hours instead of one. We should have more free time in MCT than we did in GAR.

To add on to what RandomHero has mentioned:
For GAR, a typical week looks like...
MW - 8-9 am lecture, 9-11 lab, 11-12 PBL.
TTH - 8-10am lecture, 10-12 lab
F - 8-10 am PBL, 10-10:30 PBL case wrap up, 10:30-11 quiz bowl/game show type deal (Who's Anatomically Correct), 11-12 lecture. Plus, as RandomHero has said, there's one day a week that you have practice of medicine small group from 1-4pm.
Once MCT starts though, it's an entirely different story. PBL is two hours MWF, lab is 2 hours once a week (if there's lab at all that week), with two 1-hour lectures on most days. There's a good chunk of days where you're only on campus for 2-3 hours tops.
I love Gross Anatomy and dissecting and everything, but I can't wait until MCT starts next week.
Interview Invite for the MD/PhD program today- first one, super excited!
What was your interview date? - trying to get a feel on how many days they have left to fill.
How many people interviewed in each group? 50-60 each day, half in the AM, half in the PM
For current students:
1) How does the school deal with Hurricane/Bad Storm days? We get a delightful onslaught of texts, emails and phone calls alerting us about impending/current bad weather and the entire university's plan for the day. Additionally, it is posted on the utmb homepage under alerts. They keep us VERY informed... we had a couple days off when there was ice on the I-45 bridge into galveston just because there are a lot of employees/students who commute and they didn't want to penalize people for not living in galveston. And because we have the Level 4 lab in the galveston national lab, which requires advance notice for evacuations, UTMB employees and students know about pending evacuations before that info is released to the news media... aka you get off the island first. So don't worry 🙂
2) I understand there is an 8 am - 12 pm schedule. I was researching the school's curriculum, and I noticed that they mention supplemental lectures but I suspect this is a PBL/Small group learning curriculum, correct? Therefore, which courses are considered supplemental lectures? This was pretty well handled by the other students; PM me for specific questions and I'll try to remember from MS1/2
For those who interviewed already:
1) My interview is still a month off but do you have any tips to prepare for it? be yourself, relax-- the interviews are low/no pressure, more conversation than anything. come up with a question or two to ask the interviewer to indicate your interest... I always asked "why utmb for you? what do you like about galveston, dislike about galveston, utmb? etc. but really, it was my most laidback interview... I had a great time 🙂
2) Were there any ethical questions or questions dealing with current medical system issues? It is possible, but I didn't have any ethical questions or if I did it was like "be honest with the patient and be kind and compassionate" kind of answer... no brainer stuff. But I'll defer on this question because I interviewed before this was on the table in any real sense.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks DrHiner. I better save questions for my interview; otherwise, I will have nothing to ask about. Just kidding! I'm pretty sure I will have a vault of questions. Right now, I am trying to read up on the ACA aka Obamacare and on presidential candidates, so I can know who to vote for. Maybe I should flip a coin for the latter or write my name on the ballot, lol.
Been doing the same...reading up on the affordable care act, how it will affect physicians and just general knowledge over the subject...
I have also been rehearsing some tougher ethical questions with my friends in low pressure situations, just to see how I sound (I feel like a ***** speaking to a mirror, just can't do it).
By tougher ethical questions I mean stuff like, "alcohol on attending's breath", "13-16 yr old girl comes to you for birth control/abortion, without parent's consent", "Made a mistake that killed a patient, how do you deal with telling the family"...etc
These questions may seem easy to y'all but I am trying to do some self-reflection and come up with some strong, well-worded answers that represent who I am ethically and morally...and maybe impress an adcom or two...![]()
Got an email today for an II for 12/7! Completed my app kind of late- 9/24. The interview date is REALLY inconvenient for me, but it's their last date this year so I guess I'll have to manage.

Congrats. Are you IS? What are your stats?
Well dang. I guess that means the rest of us are officially silently rejected.
I read that normally they send the II 4 weeks before the date.. so I wouldn't assume hope for a II from UTMB is over just yet!
Just talked to Silvia. She said the committee has decided to extend the interview dates to December 14th (one extra day).
Hey guys, has anyone been told how many students will be admitted to the 3 year program for next year? Thanks.

It's the 3 year family medicine track
Anyone interviewing on the 9th wanna possibly split cab fare from Houston Hobby?
Accepted to UTMB yesterday afternoon! Interviewed 8/17. OOS 34O 4.0. And I thought one of my interviews there went pretty badly. Good luck everyone!![]()
How long do UTMB students get to study for the step 1? Do the students get out early 2nd year? I know some schools only give 4 weeks, while others give up to 8 weeks.
I found the approved calender (http://www.utmb.edu/imo/calendar.asp) which shows 2 module 9s but I believe it is a typo. If so, it shows the academic term ends early may with 1 exam scheduled 6/3 (possibly ACLS/PALS??). It shows 6 weeks of dedicated studying before rotations start, but I'm sure current students will clarify.
From what I have heard, UTMB prepares students VERY well for step. I think they start informal prep well before the summer. Maybe as early as Nov/Dec. If any UTMB students can chime in that would be great.
