2013-2014 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks. Unfortunately I didn't attend Haskell, but my sister did. I should ask some of the people who graduated high school with me and are currently at KUMC. They all went to colleges OOS two at Hopkins and one Harvard and they are all at KU med school. I was in Wellesley, MA for college, but now work in Maryland. I won't be applying to med school until I finish my post-bacc premed classes in about two years, but it is always good to look ahead. Especially since UMD med school is highly competitive. Good Luck to all who have applied this year! I hope you all get into some school, if not KUMC.

So the email Jason sent out a couple days ago stating decisions will be mailed the week of March 17, could that mean that they may be sent sometime this week, or likely after the 17th?

I'm going to guess they will be mailed starting the 17th but possibly Friday. I believe they may have one final committee meeting this week before they have selected all the applicants and filled the slots. Honestly, I'm not an expert though since it's my first year applying so perhaps one of last years applicants can give better information.

If you never changed your residency status and only got an out of state drivers license you should still be considered a resident. Do you pay KS state income tax or do they waive it for AD? I know that military is usually a special category and the registrar will be able to let you know.
My spouse is AD Army and I've gotten instate tuition since the day I got to KS even though I was not a techical resident of Kansas. Don't take my word as gold but I'm pretty sure all you will need to do is show your terminal leave paperwork and or DD214.

I was born in raised in KS as well, but I've been in the military for the last 11 years. I license is out of state, but my home of record is Kansas. My ETS is not until SEP14 and I intend to take all the steps for residency this month. Does anyone know whether I would be able to be considered in state?

I wonder if we had the same first interviewer. Your description sounds like my guy, haha. I got accepted last week, though, so don't worry too much! Good luck!

er
Thanks! I PM'ed you so if you have time to read and reply that would be great.

I'm sure you could call Jason tomorrow and ask.

"After we review all interviewees, we will extend additional acceptances TO a total of approximately 220."

I think this is saying how big the class is, not how many seats are left, IE. Already Accepted + additional acceptances = 220.
I would guess that there are about 80-100 seats left to fill but who really knows.

They will extend more acceptances than the number of seats, because you have to account for people who have been accepted to multiple programs, and ultimately choose to go to another program.

I agree. The total class size is 211. I don't think that's changing from last year so 220 would be more than the total number of seats. I don't think they overfill by very much because so many people who are accepted chose to attend.

Pre-interview rejection today. OOS, complete early August. Good luck everyone!!

Do you have other schools you applied to? If so hoping you've got some offers and interviews!

I did call Jason today and asked about the letters- he said they would start to be mailed out next week but didn't state exactly when so, if you don't get a letter by Friday, don't get stressed out. I'm guessing they have hundreds of letters to go out. I asked when I could meet with dean McCurdy to go over my application as I am pretty unhopeful for anything
Other than rejection. So, he told me to wait and see what my letter status was and it would highlight what the procedures are for contacting dean McCurdy about a post reject feedback session. He was pretty careful not to give mr Any indication one way or another so I'm still in the dark. It's a bummer you cant get the reject info via email or phone but I guess it's a way to be fair to all applicants. Anyone who's gotten an acceptance or reject letter- do they all come in the same small letter envelope or do acceptances come in a larger mailer like undergrad programs? I'm so anxious and just want to get the word like the rest of us so we can plan what to do next.
The waiting is really hard, especially when you didn't get a good feeling about your first interviewer.
Good luck everyone!

If anyone is willing to share if they have gotten a post bacc invite this year that would be great- curious to see if some sort of trend goes with getting an invite to that program besides the URM status.
The letter comes in the same sized envelope no matter what the outcome is (acceptance, wait-list, rejection). I'm on the hold status so I'm waiting to see... About the post-bacc I can't give you any details about KU, as I'm not too familiar with it, but I did do a post-bacc Master's program at Boston University which is designed in a similar way (you take your classes with the first year med students and do a year of research). They also prepared us to take the MCAT, the average in my year went up by at least 4 points (the average out of my friends was a mid 30's score). I would definitely look into something like that, there are plenty of programs out there. I know some people who got into that program with below a 22 MCAT and are matriculating this year.

If you get a rejection with an invitation to the postbac, it's a big envelop. I got it last year.

Just in case anyone's interested, I spoke to Annette, Dean McCurdy's assistant and she said they just finished the final selections on Thursday so don't expect letters to be mailed on Monday the 17th as an a absolute, they are shooting for early next week to have all final decision letters mailed but that could mean some won't be mailed until Friday. Ahh! The suspense. Best of luck everyone

Fingers crossed for everyone in this thread still waiting. I think all who have posted here seem like you'd make great doctors someday!

So wait, Plastic... you received a Post-Bacc invite but didn't take it? What were some of your stats if you don't mind me asking?

I am. Have any "on holds" heard yet?

Thanks Corinn. I am really banking on this being the case, and I've got my fingers crossed that I will be accepted next week.

I hate to speak for her but yes she got an invite and decided to forgo it (I will let her speak on why if she wants to share) and reapply this year.
It worked out for her because she got into her first choice school! Congrats to her!!! I know she interviewed at KU but is on hold and should find out this week

Rejected.. Not surprised at all, phone conference set up tomorrow for feedback on what I need to improve. Hoping it's just my MCAT score and nothing else.
No word on post bacc yet

That stinks! I'm so sorry...totally thought you had it.

I'm really hoping for some acceptance letters for some people!!!

Aww! You're sweet. Overcoming a 20 MCAT is pretty much impossible, and I have a special needs kiddo who's in the hospital a lot so I know those two issues are probably what the committee spoke about and ultimately was concerned about. I'm still holding out some hope for post bacc but we will see since there will be a lot of referrals to the program and only a few slots. I am going to just hope for an invite and be thankful for that and focus on retaking my MCAT

Just got my letter in the mail. Can't get up the nerve to open it

Rejected! Not unexpected in the least, but disappointing just the same.

No word on post bacc yet. I called the office and left a message.

Did you make an appt to talk to the dean by phone? I am going to speak to her tomorrow and ask if I was referred to be considered for an invite

She told me a while back when i talked her that i would qualify.

Congrats!!!! Glad to hear!
Thanks! Sorry to hear about your news... hopefully you get good news regarding the post-bacc. If not there are a lot of other post-bacc options for you at different schools... it definitely helped me!

No worries! I'm happy to hear some good news for someone 😉

Accepted! Happiest day of my life!

Congratulations!! If you don't mind me asking, did you interview in the last block of interviews in February (12-14th), or is this an acceptance off the SUC list?!
