2013-2014 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations!! If you don't mind me asking, did you interview in the last block of interviews in February (12-14th), or is this an acceptance off the SUC list?!
I interviewed back in October. Poor undergrad GPA, 3.66 post-bacc (which included a year of med school classes), 31 MCAT in 2013 (took it many years ago with low 20 results). White male.

Dear Student Doctor Users,

I would like to inform you that I got into KU Medical School (my first try). This fact in an ordinary sense isn't unique, but I would like to state my stats so that other people who are applying don't ever lose hope in the future. There are places on this forum that can at times discourage many future medical students from applying due to factors we cannot control. My MCAT score was a 29 and my GPA was a 3.3. I am in state and I am not considered a minority. By all probability, I should've not gotten in, but I had a lot of extra circulars and good letters of recommendation. With a quite bit of effort (and some luck of course), medical school is attainable. Good luck to anyone who needs it. Know that you are in good company.

Sincerely,

Rye

I am definitely not giving up-
My MCAT score is the main reason why I was not offered a spot in this years class. I will also find our what else could have been an issue and work to strengthen my application for next year. Don't sell yourself short! You deserve the spot you were given and you should be proud!
Congrats and take care

Hi Cwhann 78. I think you were staying 2 doors away from me during the interview. I could be mistaken but I remember you mentioning your interview and you caught my attention when you were talking about your kids. It could be someone else, I am not sure. Either way, your story is extremely touching and I wish you well for next year's application or post bacc. I emailed Jason this morning and he confirmed that the post bacc decisions will be emailed next week.

Did all letters go out on Monday? Haven't received mine yet.

Does anyone know how far the alternate list usually moves? I know last year it went down to at least spot 11, however an average of the past few years would be helpful just to see if there is any trend or if it fluctuates quite a bit every year?

I don't know about averages, you'll probably have to ask Jason. A few years back I had a friend who was #7 and did not get in. She got in the next year, however.

I recall the dean mentioning they were shortening this list quite a bit because it doesn't move very much since they overfill by about 9-11 people.
So this year it's probably less than 20.
You never know what could happen

I'd like Wichita. I have free daycare here and my wife actually works in the rural heath dept at ku on the Wichita campus. I also have heard good things about 3rd and 4th year rotations in wichita.

Oh boy, at position number 9, wish me luck!

Rejected. Was seriously bummed but took a nice pretty drive, broke my two-year vegetarian streak by eating a spicy-chicken sandwich, now am back in action!

Thanks! I know it all happens for a reason. A lot of great people here were accepted after reapplying. I know if I can bring up my MCAT then I have a better shot. I felt honored to get an invite for II especially applying so late and having such a crappy MCAT score.
I will end up in medial school even if I'm ancient by the time I get in 😉

What state are you from? I'm in CA and have no idea when the mail will get here... trying to guestimate how much longer I have to endure this torture.

MCAT score isn't everything at KU. There's a lot more weight in the volunteer, EC, and medical experience than people probably think. This was my first time applying and got in with a low MCAT but had just about everything else... Wishing everyone the best of luck.

Hi since I had to schedule another interview, I asked [email protected] to email me decision via PDF. I am in WA state.

Also Corinn, let me know if you have a copy of Examkrackers already or if you need a copy. The second time, I forgot (I only took because my score expired after three years), I also used berkeley review which was very good for OChem specifically. Anyway I won't need them anymore so if you want me to mail you those 4 books plus the ochem, just let me know.

Does anyone know what KU's deferment policy is? I know I can talk to Jason, but I thought I'd just check in here.

While I agree with you I can say that having anything over 3.6-7 GPA definitely overshadows a 23 MCAT whereas in my case I had a 3.3(had 18yr old grades that brought my GPA down) with a 20 and I have 3 kids which I am essentially raising alone so EC's are limited but I do mentor HS students who are interested in science and engineering and I participate in JUNTOS and did a small amount of research.i also had 10+years of experience in healthcare In the end I am pretty sure the dean will give me more feedback but advise me to retake.
KU is definitely a school that really does look at the whole application however the MCAT and GPA is still a big factor and some stuff just can't be overcome without a postbacc or retaking the MCAT. Dean McCurdy has spoken to me in the past about this and said while they look at everything she doesn't control the committee and many of them do look at those numbers when deciding to vote for someone.

I don't think they defer acceptances at all but call or email Jason to be sure
