2013-2014 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted my check (in person since I live close) last Friday and was told I'd be all set... however, 3 days later my app still hasn't been greyed out. anything to be concerned about?

....So how long did it take for people to receive the secondary after getting verified? I've been verified for like a week and still got nothing from Umass -_-

Took about two weeks for me. So don't panic just yet.

Thanks dude. Got it today so that's a relief lol

Also just to confirm... 55 Lake Ave North is the address to send the (....ancient form of payment) check for the secondary app fee right?

yeah! it is. Also do you guys know if they send out II for reapplicants earlier or later?

They still haven't greyed out anything on my app, and it's incomplete. Should I call or email them? It's been finished on my end for a couple of weeks now...

I would call them. I had to call to get my app "complete". They received my check before I finished filling out some questions so the processing was on hold until I called. I had emailed them as well but they didn't do anything about it until I called.

To save you the trouble, I called them today since I had sent in my check almost 2 weeks ago. They said they haven't gotten around to processing a bunch of apps, but will do so sometime this week.

Interview invite!! Frist one of the cycle! Super pumped. UMASS is definitely one of my top choices, and I'm excited to go see the school. Anyone else going out in the early/middle of October?

It was also a quick turnaround for me: as of Monday they hadn't processed my MCAT scores, at least according to the online portal, so I must have only been complete within the last few days (~8/25-26).

Does everyone have that "MMI Rater Evaluation Form" link on the 'Self Service' tab? I thought for a sec I was gonna find out I was invited for an interview but then realized I don't have access to the link. What's with that?

I was just complete today, and the MMI Eval form popped up for me then. Can't access it either.

I was also excited by the MMI Evaluation button but alas it does not seem to be significant...

I can't find the secondary fee anywhere, anyone know what it is and do they really prefer check? If so, to what address? Or if you can help me find it, that would be very helpful. Thanks!

You have to send it in snail mail. The address is in the emails they sent.

I was a reapplicant. My interviews actually went worse here during my second app cycle, and yet I was accepted 😕. I think after the interviews they probably cull a few applicants with bad interviews and then for the remainder they make acceptances based on the rest of the application. In other words, don't bank on an acceptance (or even a waitlist) just because your interviews go well. Stats are another thing not to bank on... quite a few of my classmates had sub 30 MCAT's and yet one person I knew got rejected here with a baller MCAT and GPA (34+ 3.8+). UMass is admittedly a weird school for admissions lol, just happy I made the cut.

When did you interview?

Any reapplicants?

Hey Food2. I'm a reapplicant. Interviewed last year in December and felt I did ok but I was rejected late May. Reapplied early this cycle and just received an II two days ago. Hope that helps, I do agree their admissions seems all over the map so not really sure what they are looking for.

Got all excited today after getting an email only to realize it was a survey.

Thank you!

3.45 cGPA/3.3 sGPA. 31 MCAT, I completed the secondary on September 1st or the 2nd.

Same stats here, but MCAT 34. I was complete about a week later though. No II's yet...

I know UMass has a notoriously drawn out process, but has anyone been given any indication of when they might be sending out their first acceptances? I know some schools have been pretty explicit as to when we should be hearing back, it doesn't seem like UMass operates this way though.

Hang in there! They should be getting to you very soon then.

I was probably complete about mid-August after my residency was verified. I still have not heard anything back, although I have already interviewed at Dartmouth and Mayo and have one at BU. I went to graduate school there too, and am surprised that I have not heard back when my stats are within their range and my experiences are off the charts.

Sigh😕

I interviewed recently, and they said we could hear within the next few weeks (ex. by the end of October), but didn't give any hard dates. They of course followed it up with a disclaimer about how we might not hear until March or April. So vagueness was the order of the day. After hearing about the constraints they're under, however, I have some sympathy, and it does seem like the admissions office truly does care about us and is trying to make the best of the situation.

First acceptances in previous years have been near the end of Nov... early acceptances here are few and far between. Most of you will will wait until 2014 to hear something. I don't think think an early vs late acceptance makes any difference of how desirable a candidate you are.

I also don't think the turnaround of secondary to interview makes a significant difference. There are people with great stats who interview early and get rejected the last week of April. There are also people who interview late and get acceptances like 2 weeks later. As has been said previously, don't stress yourself figuring out their timeline.

Anyone care to share how the new MMI format went for them who has interviewed already? Or just the day in general? I interviewed last year and interviewing next week. Thanks.

I interviewed in September and I thought the MMI format was nice. It is such a fast pace throughout that I basically forgot about the fact that i was interviewing. Just picture speed dating with prompts (or I assume so... I have never actually done speed dating). Besides the MMI, the day was structured pretty well and I felt very comfortable throughout.

Whew! I finally received an ii from here! Was really getting worried.

Complete in August sometime.

😀

Thanks! Excited for try #2. So were these situational questions or standard interview questions? I assumed the former but your post made me feel it was more of the latter.

When you interview, you sign a document saying you won't disclose the content of the MMI prompts... I'm sure you're curious but honestly there's not a whole lot you can do to prepare for the MMI.

The speed dating analogy is a good one - try to be relaxed and genuine. Do whatever you were doing to prepare for your other interviews/educate yourself about healthcare issues, but try not to stress out about questions you might be asked.

I intentionally left my description without details for that reason. I know it's a big deal, but being relaxed and ready for anything is the best way to prepare.

ACCEPTED AAAHH!! Wow, was not expecting this.

Interviewed in late September - the people in my interview group were awesome and made the day a lot more relaxing and fun. UMass does a great job selecting applicants for interviews - good luck to everyone still waiting!

So early! Congrats!

Does umass-med like umass undergrads?

UMass undergrad here, complete very early, no invitation yet. I remember peeking at last year's Facebook group for the accepted class and being a bit intimidated by the number of Hopkins/Cornell/Brown/Yale grads I saw. Still keeping the faith, though.

Quite a few people in the facebook group when I last looked at it in April or so ended up not matriculating, so don't really think of it as a perfect indicator of the class composition. I went to a UMass school and off the top of my head there are at least a dozen other UMass kids in the class. I wouldn't sweat the lack of II, I don't think it's any indicator of their interest in you.

Thanks for the response guys and congratulations on the acceptance! I remember hearing you can't discuss it just wasn't sure the level of detail but good to know. I'm just anxious as this has always been my top choice so really want to nail it. Hopefully having an acceptance already going in will relax me a bit.

Dreamt last night that I got an II here. I'm glad my subconscious is at least keeping the faith.

Hi all:

My first post here...I was accepted to UMass last Friday morning. Interviewed on 9/11. 3.45 sGPA, 3.7 cGPA, 32 (12P/10V/10B) MCAT. Super non-traditional. Non-URM. Feel free to ask anything about the process!

We interviewed on the same day!

I'm still waiting to hear back. Not sure if I should be concerned from the lack of response or not...

If they would just accept me then I would attend in a heartbeat.

Hi fellow interviewee! How did you feel about the MMI process? Did you like it?
