2014-2015 Brown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am grateful to Brown for loving me back. I was certainly lost in love from the interview day forward. Several schools have turned me away without an interview; others are waiting to see how many of their first choice folks turn them down. If I can make the finances work, though, I would certainly like to accept the offer and spend my med school years at this school. Maybe goodness of fit is a "real thing."

BTW, I was complete in early August and interviewed last month. My LizzyM is somewhere in the low 70s. (I know someone is bound to ask me!) I was informed by email sent yesterday morning.
Saw that you were accepted on MDApp, came here to say congrats! It must have been a stressful cycle! I'm so glad to see that you got into Brown! You have my best wishes girl!

Thank you! I still have at least one interview, so the stress is not quite over, but I am grateful for the acceptances and for the good wishes, O XX and Congenial House!

I'll PM you! Same for anyone else that's curious.

I'm curious, if you don't mind sharing! I'm a reapplicant who was wait listed at Brown last year, still waiting for an II this year.

I had bought online access to the USNWR grad compass for some more stats. Logged in earlier today and apparently the Step 1 average (2013 data) was 238? Wow thats seems really good. Is it really that high? Can any current students comment on this? This seems to jibe with the great match lists of recent years. Was accepted a few weeks ago and am pumped to attend (assuming the financials work out)

Do you know if USNWR list Step averages for all the med schools? If so, I might buy a copy too. Thanks!

I feel stupid asking this question but ...

I was not able to complete the application for this school beforehand. The deadline is technically in a couple of days but it seems incredibly later. I did work on the application but I don't know if it is worth the money to even bother at this point. When does their interview period end?

Just wanted your thoughts on whether I should give it a whirl.

Get it in gear, @Optimistic Eh!! I can't make promises for Brown, but I do believe that its folks mean what they say. When they say that the deadline is December 31, I feel strongly that the intent is to read those late-submitted applications as carefully and receptively as they read the ones received in July. If you feel as if Brown is a good match for you--that you have an interesting story, that you are a demonstrably unique individual, that passion and commitment (and love for the kind of school Alpert is) shine through your essays, submit! "Truly remarkable and commitment individuals" are sought, and Brown interviews through the month of February. Only you can judge whether you think you have a good chance, but if you do--I have faith that Brown is sincere about that deadline. (Just a thought--it is a selective school, though, so if you feel as though you may not fit the criteria, that's another consideration.)

Whats the social scene like at Alpert? I'm the farthest thing from a party animal but a senior year of college which began with the MCATs and ended with genetics as well as a gap year spent living in the suburbs with no HS or college friends easily accessible on a regular basis has made me curious.

Thanks for the perspective @BengaliBrat. 🙁 I'll take tonight to reflect and then if I feel so, I'll submit it tomorrow.

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a bit of help. I received a secondary invitation some time ago. I looked up the questions on this forum and completed them on google docs. With stupid deliberation, I have yet to turn it in. Now when I click the link from my email to activate my account, I can't find the stated "Medical/Graduate Applicant Account Activation."

If anyone could direct me to how I may activate my account, that would be fantastic.

Thank you in advance.

I wouldn't be surprised if the average were 238. Just remember, it's an average (mean) and subject to skew. It's also not a normal distribution.

Whats the social scene like at Alpert?

It's pretty good, I'd say. Lots of awesome people doin' stuff people do... if you're into ___, there's a group of people who do that. I'm more the board game, movie type, so that's what I do. There's certainly a "going out" contingent as well.

Good luck, everyone!

For those who sent letters of intent? where/how did you send it? I am asking because I sent one in October in the e-mail body to the the admissions e-mail, no confirmation or anything. Then I sent one today w/ PDF attachment to the general admissions e-mail and still no confirmation. I tried calling the office just in case but every time it has gone to voice mail. Does anyone know what the general process with LOI is?

Literally, the same exact thing happened to me. Let me know if you figure it out!

Been complete since mid-August and haven't heard anything. Anyone else in the same boat?
Yep. I live down the street from the med school...I'm getting tempted to just pop in the admissions office and be like READY TO INTERVIEW/ACCEPT ME PLEASE??

Not down to get a restraining order though, so I'm resisting.

@gracekelly530, I totally get you. I've interviewed at two medical schools in my hometown and want to "drop in" to persuade the adcom folk to nod at me invitingly. I think that this feeling is a bit like being a passenger on an airplane. The stats all say that flying is safer than driving, but part of that anxiety is the feeling that I've totally handed control of my life over to a total stranger. Control may be an illusion, but it is such a comfortable illusion!

Hey guys, a friend of mine is interviewing at Brown at one of their last interview dates in February. He is worried that it is an interview for a waitlist since it is such a late interview date. Does Brown usually do that?

Anyone know the number of people accepted post interview?

Thanks!

According to MSAR, 298 were interviewed last year and 120 matriculated. Given that they most likely offered more acceptances, I would assumed there is about a 50% chance of getting in post-interview. I doubt that brown interviews for waitlist, they seem very meticulous in there interview process.

Do we still have a chance if we were complete in early september? It seems like they stopped sending out rejections so I'm wondering what they are doing with all the people in limbo....

In the same boat. Last year they sent a few II into February and also rejections into February.... Hoping for something to be sent out today, fingers crossed good news.

It's not an interview for a waitlist. There are still spots for next year's matriculating class. Brown takes all the interview days seriously and there's a good chance for anyone interviewing here.

Besides, I got in off the waitlist (several years ago).

@IKaman_IGasol_IConquered US News and world report says they accepted 234 out of the 298 they interviewed. So actually a much higher than 50% chance!

I interviewed 9/26 and was waitlisted.. someone on my interview day mentioned that students were accepted last year off the waitlist beginning at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb- anyone know if there's any truth to this? seems a little early to me..

I have heard this as well.

Did anyone else who was waitlisted also receive an email regarding financial aid?

We were told on my interview day that they are already beginning to take people off of the WL

Good news. . . this may be completely biased, but it is so difficult for me to understand turning Brown down. I have heard some sneers about its "low ranking." Of course, I am one of those who just does not get the appeal of Coach purses or Manolo shoes, either. So I may be just a different demographic.

It seems like an amazing institution, and the students seem so happy and interesting. I will be jumping off the walls if I hear good news this Friday
That's awesome. When did you interview?
I interviewed this past Thursday!

Good luck to you! Brown may not be for everyone, but for some of us. . .true love!

Does this mean they have reviewed applications and they don't plan on extending IIs anymore?
